New Chinese 5th Generation Fighter Jet--J31 Performs More Flight Tests

The J-31 continues flight testing at a Shenyang Aircraft Corporation research facility in northern China.  As China's second fifth generation fighter, the J-31 makes China the second nation in the world, after the United States, to have flown two fifth generation fighters.  With a length of about 17 meters and an 11.5m wingspan, the J-31 is about the size of the F-35 Lightning II and smaller than the F-22, J-20 and PAK-FA.  A large model of the J-31, designated as "F-60", appeared at the Zhuhai 2012 Airshow, indicating a Chinese willingness to export the J-31 as a international competitor to the F-35.  Once it enters service, the J-31 is likely to be serve alongside less numerous J-20s as part of a "high/low" combination, similar to the F-35/F-22 mix in the US Air Force. The J-31 is also likely to serve aboard future Chinese aircraft carriers, greatly enhancing their capabilities.  Pakistan is likely to be the first export customer for the J-31, as Islamabad hopes to counter the Indian purchase of Russian FGFA stealth fighters.

The J-31 "Gyrfalcon" stealth fighter reportedly uses technology from the J-19, Shenyang's failed bid for the Chinese heavy 5th generation fighter (which the Chengdu J-20 won).  The J-31 has conducted at least six test flights in Shenyang since fall 2012 and a second prototype is under assembly.  Compared to censorship of some J-20 photos, there is less secrecy about the J-31's development.

To save weight, the J-31 uses an immense number of of 3D laser printed components, including titanium wing spars.  Compared to the F-35, the J-31 uses two smaller Russian RD-33 engines instead of a larger engine like the AL-31 or WS-10.  This gives the J-31 a flatter fuselage than the F-35; which suggests a more pronounced air superiority focus for the J-31, since a flatter fuselage results in a smaller weapons bay but improves fuel efficiency and speed by decreasing drag.  It is likely that the J-31 could carry larger missiles like the YJ-12 anti-ship missile under its wings, but like with the F-35, at the cost of stealth.  Vladimir Barkovsky, chief of the Russian MiG aircraft design bureau, has praised the J-31 as a "well done indigenous design" and "good machine" resulting from China's ambitious aviation industry.

F-60 Display at Zhuhai 2012
A large display model of the J-31, under its export designation "F-60", is exhibited at the Zhuhai 2012 Air Show. Shenyang Aviation Corporation's display of the F-60 suggests Chinese ambition to sell a 5th generation competitor to the F-35 for stealth fighter exports.

Russian Engine to Power Chinese J-31 Fighter Jets: Rosoboronexport

RD-93 engines made in Russia will power the Chinese J-31 fifth generation fighters, Sergei Kornev said; he has also mentioned that there is a solution to the problem of China making copycat copies of Russian weapons.

MOSCOW, November 10 (RIA Novosti) — A Russian-made RD-93 engine will power the Chinese J-31 fifth generation fighter, Rosoboronexport official told RIA Novosti Monday.

"J-31 with the Russian engine RD-93 is considered to be an export program, able to compete with the American F-35 fifth generation aircraft on the regional markets," Rosoboronexport’s Air Force Equipment Export Department Head Sergey Kornev told RIA Novosti in an interview.

"The program is ambitious, but very real, especially considering the high cost of F-35 and some problems with its development," Kornev added.

Sergey Kornev, who is heading the Russian delegation at China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai, told RIA Novosti that two fifth generation fighters are being developed in China, the J-20 and J-31, which demonstrates the high potential of Chinese science and aviation industry.

The J-31 fifth generation fighter flew a maiden flight in October 2012 and there is currently only one prototype available. The twin-engine jet bears some resemblance with the Russian T-50 or PAK FA fifth-generation fighter.

China has also been developing its stealth J-20 fighter, which first took off in 2011, and is expected to be operational by 2017 or later.

Russian RD-93 engines are a variant of the RD-33 engines, initially developed to power MiG-29 fighters. The RD-93 was developed by Russia’s Klimov design bureau specifically for the FC-1 fighter, known in Pakistan as the JF-17 Thunder.

The world's only fifth generation fighter in service is the US F-22 Raptor, while F-35, Russian T-50 and Chinese J-20 and J-31 are at various stages of development.

Kornev also mentioned about the problem of China's making copycat copies of Russian weapons, but pointed out that there is a resolution to that.

"The problem [of China violating copyright of Russian weapons] exists, but it is solvable, and both sides are seeking the settlement of controversial situations," Rosoboronexport's Air Force Equipment Export Department Head Sergei Kornev said prior to the Airshow China 2014 exhibition, which will be held in southern China's city of Zhuhai on November 11-16.

He cited a 2008 deal on intellectual property protection in military-technical cooperation between the two nations as a good example of Russia-China cooperation on the issue.

"We continue joint activities on elaboration of working mechanisms of exposing violations. The problem is concealed in the inconsistence of local legislations as well as international acts," Kornev added.

The defense official, however, underscored that military-technical cooperation between Russia and China has no hurdles which could not be cleared.

In 1992, China bought Russia's Su-27 fighter jets. Fifteen years later, Beijing unveiled J-11B aircraft which Moscow labeled as a copycat version of Su-27.

Russia has also accused China of producing cloned versions of Su-33 fighter jet, S-300 air defense system, the Smerch multiple rocket launcher and the Msta self-propelled howitzer in violation of intellectual property agreements.

J-31 stealth jet gets bad reviews after Zhuhai Airshow flight

China's newly unveiled J-31 stealth fighter has received bad reviews at home and abroad after making its first public demonstration flight during the biennial Zhuhai Airshow in the southern province of Guangdong.

The criticism of J-31, China's second fifth-generation fighter jet, mainly stems from the dark exhaust emitting from the jet's engine, which indicates the engine's poor efficiency in burning fuel.

There are two types of engines used on the J-31 jets — the RD-93 used by Russia's MiG-29 fighters will be fitted to those intended for foreign clients, while the ones deployed by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) will have the WS-13 engine developed from the RD-93.

It is unclear which type of engine the J-31 on display in Zhuhai used.

Meanwhile, PLA Navy Rear Admiral Zhang Zhaozhong said in a speech in Xiamen on Nov. 17 that China's reverse engineering still has its limitations, and that it will take the country another few years to achieve a breakthrough in developing its own engines.

Zhang said the development of a jet engine involves mechanics and digital control, and the former is far more easy to master than the latter. "This part is too difficult and not something that can be achieved successly in a short time," he said.

Zhang also believes that the J-31 jet is too heavy.

Meanwhile, Teal Group analyst Richard Aboulafia said prospects for the J-31 jet's export market are not as positive as many have described.

Aboulafia said countries buying Chinese military hardware are mainly poor, with Pakistan the largest customer, and China may have to find new clients for the higher-end fifth-generation fighters. These new clients are most likely China's neighbors, but these countries will have their about Beijing given the tensions existing between them, Aboulafia added.

Moreover, the fifth-generation jets may have already come too late, since the US Air Force and Navy have both begun plans to develop their next-generation fighters to replace the F-22 and F/A-18E/F, respectively.

Shenyang FC-31 fighter performance 'leaked' online

Richard D Fisher Jr, Washington, DC - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

20 September 2015

Chinese 5th Generation Fighter Jet--J31 5181
A sub-scale model of the Shenyang FC-31 fifth-generation fighter made its second appearance at the September 2015 Beijing Air Show.
Source: Via Top81 web page

The posting on Chinese websites of possible performance data for the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) FC-31 fifth-generation fighter indicates it could pose a commercial threat to Western and Russian fighter manufacturers.

A modified version of SAC's J-31 technology development fighter, an FC-31 model made its second appearance at the Beijing Air Show in mid-September. However, as at its debut appearance at the November 2014 Airshow China at Zhuhai, the Aviation Industries Corporation of China (AVIC) did not provide data on the aircraft.

On 15 September FC-31 performance data was posted anonymously online. The data reads like descriptive information intended for internal Chinese distribution and was apparently deemed not sensitive enough to be deleted by China's formidable internet censors. Other sources suggest it could have been released at the Beijing Air Show.

Apparently semi-approved internet revelations of otherwise classified data happen frequently, as the J-31's gradual revelation from 2010 to 2012 illustrate. However, the unofficial nature of such data deservedly prompts questions about its credibility.

For example, in the absence of more data on the FC-31's true empty weight, internal fuel capacity, and engine efficiency, some Chinese observers questioned claims that the "internal fuel combat radius" for a fighter of its size could be as much as 1,200 km.

However, the reported maximum engine thrust figure of "88.29 kn" or 9 tons, does conform with statements made by Chinese officials to IHS Jane's at the 2015 Paris Air Show that China was testing a new 9-ton medium thrust turbofan on the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation FC-1/JF-17 fighter. Thought to be an improved version of the WS-13 Taishan turbofan reportedly developed from the Russian Klimov 8.29-ton thrust RD-33 turbofan, it will power versions of the single-engine FC-1 and the twin-engine FC-31.

The data posted online describes the FC-31 as "designed for high survivability, low radar detectability, low IR (infrared) signature, and excellent capabilities for electronic counter measures".

Shenyang continues prototype development of FC-31 fighter

Recent information from Chinese, Russian, and Ukrainian sources reveals an uptick in activity by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation on its FC-31 lightweight fighter programme.

The 'second prototype' of what has been billed as a stealthy design is reported to have flown in December 2016 and was observed undergoing a series of extensive flight tests in April. The rise in tempo of these test flights is generating speculation that the programme finally has some official support from the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).

in design between the two aircraft. (Via CJDBY website)

The FC-31 was originally unveiled in November 2012 at Air Show China in Zhuhai, with the official title of 'Advanced Fighter Concept', although Chinese security restrictions at the time would not even permit anyone to credit Shenyang as the entity that had developed the aircraft. The design has also been known by a list of various designations: FC-31, J-31, Project 310, Falcon Hawk, and F-60.

What is now being called the first prototype flew at the 2014 Zhuhai show, finally openly labelled as a Shenyang design, but without any indication that the PLAAF - or any other air force - was considered a potential customer. It made no appearance at Air Show China 2016, however.

Changes seen in the second prototype mirror some of the "work in progress" type of modifications seen in the different prototypes of China's other next-generation fighter: the Chengdu J-20. Among the notable differences between the first and second prototypes, the most significant are as follows:

- The planform's outer mould lines have changed in order to reduce the aircraft's radar cross-section (RCS). Photos of the aircraft in flight appear to show some of the "edge treatment" stealthy coating techniques seen previously on the J-20 that flew at the 2016 Zhuhai air show.

- The second FC-31 prototype appears externally to have been fitted with an infrared search and track (IRST) system, while Chinese websites have stated the aircraft has an "advanced" radar.
