C-130J Super Hercules Continues to Be the Tactical Airlifter In Demand
Lockheed Martin | Mar 12, 2009

MELBOURNE, Australia: A Lockheed Martin official explained to reporters attending the Avalon Air Show today why the C-130J continues to be the platform of choice to meet the growing worldwide demand for tactical air mobility.
“The C-130J continues to be the airlifter of choice for many nations,” said George Standridge, vice president of Business Development for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. “Two hundred fifty-seven C-130Js have been ordered through 2008 of which 171 have been delivered. Production will steadily increase from 12 aircraft in 2008 to approximately double by 2010. Lockheed Martin is currently in detailed discussions with several countries and looks forward to continued growth in the C-130J program.”
Standridge cited several recent C-130J program highlights. In 2007, the first C-130J Foreign Military Sale (FMS) aircraft were sold to Norway with a second FMS sale to India in 2008. During that same period, Canada bought 17 aircraft and Qatar became the first Middle East customer. Last month the United Arab Emirates announced its selection of the C-130J to modernize it airlift fleet.
Australia is among the nations that operate the C-130J and holds a unique place in the history of the program. It was the first ever non-U.S. customer for the C-130 and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is also the only service to have flown all variants of the Hercules.
“Just a few months ago we joined with the RAAF to celebrate 50 years of operational service,” said Standridge. “During those 50 years the RAAF has gained a reputation as an airlift operator that will do whatever it takes to get the job done, regardless of the environment.”
Standridge went on to explain how the C-130J is uniquely designed to “do whatever it takes” by performing a wide variety of missions. The airplane is currently performing missions including air combat (both airland and airdrop); air-refueling; Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR); weather-reconnaissance; electronic combat; and firefighting.
“There is no better time to be a part of this program,” Standridge said. “The aircraft is proven with strong operational performance, on time, high-quality deliveries and an unprecedented demand. We now have a backlog of 86 C-130Js, which is the highest we have had since the program was initiated. This backlog secures our production well into 2012.”

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 146,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2008 sales of $42.7 billion.

Lockheed starts building new version of the C-130J
By Stephen Trimble

Lockheed Martin officially launched production on 5 October of the first C-130 Hercules acquired by the US Air Force to support search and rescue missions since the Vietnam War.

The ceremony inside Lockheed's Marietta production facility also marked the launch of a new C-130 variant tailored for special operations missions, which company officials hope could lead to dozens - if not hundreds - of new orders by domestic and foreign customers for the 55-year-old tactical airlifter.

The USAF plans to acquire 22 new HC/MC-130Js to begin replacing 78 HC-130s flown by search and rescue teams and 37 MC-130s operated by special forces. More orders are expected to follow as the USAF continues to renew the ageing fleet.

The new design boosts the C-130J's maximum take-off weight to 74,400kg (164,000lb) and the assault landing weight to 64,400kg. The heavier model also includes an advanced wing design that guarantees longer service life, which has become a major issue for the C-130E models that the C-130J replaces.

Lockheed has also adapted the C-130J production process for the new variant. The refuelling receptacle is produced in-line instead of as a post-production modification. That single change eliminates eight months of extra production time, saving $8 million in manufacturing costs per aircraft, Lockheed officials say.

Lockheed has also fitted a forward looking infrared (FLIR) turreted pod - the Raytheon multi-spectral targeting system (MTS-A) - to the airframe structure beneath the flightdeck. The company is investing internal funds to design a retractable turret that could extend the HC/MC-130J's mission radius.

Company officials have also disclosed internal plans to develop a new outer-mould line for the venerable airlifter that can accommodate more equipment for special operations missions. One design concept displayed publicly so far reveals an enlarged nose section and a wider cross-section for the fuselage.

Lockheed is in the midst of a major sales boom for the C-130J programme. The company is doubling annual production from 12 aircraft in 2008 to more than 24 aircraft in 2010. Lockheed will be building five different models of the C-130J simultaneously in 2010, including new HC/MC-130Js and KC-130Js, and C-130J-30s ordered by Canada, Qatar and India.

Lockheed Martin prepares ISR kit for C-130J

June 23, 2011
Lockheed Martin is looking at offering a kit which would turn the C-130J into long-endurance ISR platform.
Building on experience gained from nations using the C-130 to meet Open Skies Treaty commitments, the Vigilant Watch system would feature an EO/IR turret system fitted into a modified underwing fuel tank, with system-operators working the systems in the rear cabin of the aircraft.
Jim Grant, VP for business development, air mobility and special operations programmes at Lockheed Martin, said the kit would be in the form of a roll-on roll-off pallet system and that the aircraft could be re-roled for the ISR mission in less than 24 hours.
Grant pointed out the kit could also be used on E, H and J-models of the aircraft.
A similar system has been adopted for use by the US Marine Corps (USMC), which uses an EO/IR turret fitted in a fuel tank on its Harvest Hawk aircraft currently being operated in Afghanistan.
The USMC currently has one aircraft, with the second and third aircraft currently being prepared for operations. The service eventually want to have at least three Harvest Hawks in each of its KC-130J VMGR squadrons.
Grant said that India has expressed interest in the dedicated weather tracking version of the aircraft, the WC-130J, currently solely used by the US Air Force's 53d Weather Reconnaissance Squadron based in Mississippi. They would be used by the Indians to track the course of typhoon weather systems in the Indian Ocean, while work was also ongoing to develop a maritime patrol capability for the aircraft.
Other roll-on, roll-off payloads are being developed for the aircraft, including a VIP-capsule designed for use by VIPs and heads of state. The Oman Royal Flight has ordered one C-130J and will make use of the capsule system for Omani royalty.
Lockheed Martin has ramped up production of the C-130J and is now building 36 aircraft per year. There is currently a backlog of 97 aircraft on order including examples for Kuwait, Iraq, Israel and South Korea.
Lockheed Martin has just begun test flying the first C-130J for the Qatar Emiri Air Force.

BAE Systems to Design Computers for C-130 Aircraft

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia – BAE Systems will design and test mission computers for 37 C-130 aircraft under a U.S. Air Force contract worth approximately $23 million. The company will develop, qualify and test the new computers, integrate existing software, and manufacture the kits the Air Force uses for final installation.
This award builds on BAE Systems’ strong history of performance in support of C-130s. The company has designed, supported and completed more than 200 modifications to C-130 variants since the late 1990s. Earlier this year, BAE Systems won an $8 million contract to develop, test and install more than 85 crashworthy seat systems to enhance the survivability of C-130s.

The new contract for the computers was awarded by the Air Force Materiel Command at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Ga. The work will be conducted at BAE Systems facilities in Warner Robins and San Antonio, Texas, and at various government locations.

“This win further strengthens our position in the market for developing and upgrading aircraft mission computers,” said Gordon Eldridge, vice president and general manager of Aerospace Solutions at BAE Systems Support Solutions. “We continue to expand on our support to the C-130 community.”

The new mission computers will replace the current versions on about 20 MC-130H variants and 17 AC-130U variants used by Special Operations Forces. BAE Systems will also conduct ground and flight testing for the computers.

Rolls-Royce Engine Marks 3 Million Flight Hours on C-130J Fleet

Lockheed C-130 Hercules 492e4010

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. | Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has completed three million engine flight hours of the AE 2100, which powers the C-130J. This milestone demonstrates the continued reliability, performance and durability which the AE 2100 offers the US Air Force and other customers. Rolls-Royce made the announcement at the annual Air Force Association Air & Space Conference, near Washington, DC.

Rolls-Royce has delivered 1,155 engines to Lockheed Martin for the C-130J since the AE 2100D3 model made its debut in 1996. The turboprop has enhanced the flight range, speed and payload of the four-engine C-130J. The engine features Dual Full Authority Digital Engine Control and has a power range from 3,600 to 4,700 shp.

The US Air Force has purchased 119 C-130Js to date.

Patricia O’Connell, Rolls-Royce, President, Customer Business Defence, stated: “Rolls-Royce focuses every day on meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers and we are proud that our hard work on the AE 2100D3 engine has delivered such strong results, with three million hours of flight time. The D3 model is part of the AE engine family, which has topped more than 48 million flight hours.”

Lorraine Martin, Vice President C-130 Programs, Lockheed Martin, stated: “Probably the most common feedback we get from the operator community is that the C-130J has the power to do what it needs to do - the power to get onto austere runways in far away combat zones, and the power to get out of harm’s way quickly. That power comes from Rolls-Royce engines.”

C-130Js are engaged in operations in multiple combat theaters and are routinely deployed in support of both peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts. The C-130J is a proven airlifter that has been selected by 15 nations, with 233 aircraft delivered to date. The C-130J is a flexible, multimission aircraft that has been manufactured in multiple configurations to meet a wide range of operational needs.

When the AE 2100D3 made its debut 15 years ago, it marked a new era for Lockheed Martin and Rolls-Royce. Previous versions of the C-130 were powered by the Rolls-Royce T56, the world’s most ubiquitous and proven turboprop. The USAF has more than 300 earlier models of the T56-powered aircraft in its fleet.

Lockheed Martins C-130 Hercules Program Hits Another Historic Milestone

Published November 3, 2011 | By Rob Vogelaar

Lockheed C-130 Hercules C-130J-30_07-8614-600x336

MARIETTA, Ga., November 2nd, 2011 — Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] yesterday celebrated the rolling out of the 250th C-130J Super Hercules built at its facility here. This C-130J is destined for Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, which is scheduled to receive a total of 28 C 130Js. This aircraft is the 2,404th C-130 of all makes and models to be built in Marietta.
“The C-130 Hercules has been setting aviation records for nearly 60 years,” said Lorraine Martin, Lockheed Martin vice president for C-130 programs, at yesterday’s ceremony. “As the longest continuously operating military aircraft production line in history, the C 130 has always been the benchmark for airlift around the world. High demand for the C-130J Super Hercules continues as it is able to demonstrate its proven, multi-mission capabilities on a daily basis.”

The C-130J program continues to deliver new capability to new countries and existing operators. India and Qatar recently joined the global C-130J operator family, while the U.S. Air Force recently received HC-130J personnel recovery and MC-130J special operations aircraft. Aircraft are currently in production for the U.S. Air Force and Marine Corps, Iraq, Israel, Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Oman and Tunisia. C-130Js are also flown by Australia, Canada, Denmark, Italy, Norway, the United Kingdom and the U.S. Coast Guard.

PICTURES: Lockheed unveils two future C-130 variants

Lockheed C-130 Hercules C130%20slide-thumb-560x421-148608Lockheed Martin has quietly launched two new variants of the 57-year-old (and counting!) C-130 Hercules. The C-130XJ and the C-130NG both appeared in a presentation by Ralph Heath, executive vice president of Lockheed's Aeronautics division, on 1 December at the Credit Suisse aerospace and defense conference in New York.

Few details of both configurations have been made available so far. The C-130XJ is aimed at the export market, and is designed to make the aircraft affordable to a broader set of foreign buyers, Heath said. The "X" in the designation stands for "expandable", Heath added, and buyers can upgrade to the C-130J's full capability.

It appears the C-130NG, which includes winglets and a redesigned nose and tail, will be offered after 2020 to replace the C-130H fleet. See a comparison between the old and new versions of the C-130J and C-130NG below.

Lockheed C-130 Hercules C130%20old%20and%20new-thumb-560x725-148610 Nearly 60 years has passed since Lockheed designer Willis Hawkins first unveiled the C-130 design. His legendary boss, Clarence L. "Kelly" Johnson, instantly hated the aircraft, warning Lockheed chief engineer Hal Hibbard the C-130 would "ruin" the company. Johnson was right about many things, such as his designs for the U-2 and SR-71, but he was completely wrong about the C-130. Rather than ruining the company, the C-130 series will be produced for at least 65 years, and possibly longer.

In the last several years, the C-130's reign over the tactical airlift market has been challenged like never before. The Airbus Military A400M and Kawasaki C-2 offer a larger platform as airlift demand increases, although the latter is forbidden to be sold outside of Japan. Meanwhile, the Embraer KC-390 and the Antonov An-178 are designed to compete directly against the C-130, albeit with a jet-powered aircraft.

09:34 GMT, January 31, 2012 MARIETTA, Ga. | Lockheed Martin’s C-130 Hercules program has reached yet another historic milestone with the delivery of its 2400th aircraft. The aircraft is an MC-130J Combat Shadow II assigned to U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command and will be operated by the 27th Special Operations Wing at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

The delivery of this aircraft follows a record year for C-130J production at the company’s facility in Marietta, Ga. In 2011, 33 C-130J Super Hercules were delivered ? a new production record for the C-130J model. Aircraft were delivered in six different configurations for six operators: the U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command, U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command, U.S. Marine Corps, Canada, India and Qatar.

The C 130 production line in Marietta is the longest continuously operating military aircraft production line in history.

“As we start a new year it is only fitting that the C-130 breaks yet another record and sets a new milestone,” said Lorraine Martin, Lockheed Martin vice president for C-130 programs. “The C-130 is the benchmark for airlift around the world and we look forward to this year being another year of excellence for our world-wide customers.”

C-130J aircraft are currently in production for the U.S. Air Force and Marine Corps, Iraq, Israel, Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Oman and Tunisia. C-130Js are also flown by Australia, Canada, Denmark, India, Italy, Norway, Qatar, the United Kingdom and the U.S. Coast Guard.

250TH C-130J Super Hercules Built Is Delivered

Published February 17, 2012 | By Rob Vogelaar

Lockheed C-130 Hercules C-130J-Dyess-728x451

MARIETTA, Ga., Feb. 16, 2012 – The 250th C-130J Super Hercules built at the Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] facility here was delivered to Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, today.
This is the 15th C-130J delivered to the 317th Airlift Group at Dyess since 2010 and the second of 11 aircraft to be delivered to the base in 2012. Dyess will have the distinction of being home to the largest C-130J fleet in the world when it receives its 28th Super Hercules aircraft in 2013.
“The C-130J is the most versatile airlifter in the world,” said Lorraine Martin, Lockheed Martin, vice president for C-130 programs. “Since the J-model was first introduced, it has been the workhorse of airlift worldwide. This milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the C-130 enterprise.”
Last month Lockheed Martin delivered the 2,400th C-130 built to U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command. The C-130 production line in Marietta is the longest continuously operating military aircraft production line in history.

Rolls-Royce and US Air Force launch fuel savings flight tests on C-130 fleet

Lockheed C-130 Hercules Lb0520c-130j20usaf203-400x267

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, and the United States Air Force will soon begin flight tests of an engine upgrade for the T56 turboprop engine, which powers the C-130H transport aircraft. The Series 3.5 upgrade is designed to deliver both fuel savings and reliability improvements, as well as improved Life Cycle Costs.

Rolls-Royce has delivered upgrade kits to be installed on an Air Force C-130H test aircraft, with flight tests scheduled to begin by mid-year. The enhancements use proven technologies from other Rolls-Royce commercial and military engines, including new blade materials and advanced turbine airfoil aerodynamic designs.

The engine upgrade program is expected to deliver significant benefits to the Air Force’s C-130H fleet, enabling the aircraft to continue operation until 2040 while delivering fuel savings of 8 per cent; along with improved reliability and performance. The Series 3.5 enhancement will also improve “hot and high” performance. Approximately 220 C-130H aircraft are eligible for upgrades.

“We recognize the US Air Force has a goal of improving energy efficiency, and Rolls-Royce has invested to help this valued customer meet its goal. In doing so, we improved engine reliability and performance, which will enable the Air Force to extend the life of its C-130 fleet for decades while potentially saving billions of dollars,” said Patricia O’Connell, President, Customer Business, Rolls-Royce Defense.

An Air Force analysis estimated long-term savings of $3.5 Billion from the Series 3.5 enhancements over the lifetime of the fleet. The engine upgrade can be accomplished as part of a conventional engine overhaul, and does not require any aircraft or engine control system modifications.

The engine upgrades will help the Air Force to achieve its goal of reducing consumption of aviation fuel by 10 per cent by 2015.

Lockheed's C-130XJ muscles in on Embraer's turf

Lockheed Martin promoted its reduced-cost C-130XJ variant of the venerable Hercules tactical transport at FIDAE.

The US company's move might be seen as a direct challenge to Embraer. The Brazilian manufacturer has said previously that it is negotiating with Chile to sell the nation's air force six KC-390 jet-powered airlifters that it is developing.

In August 2010, the two South American states signed a declaration of intent that would see Chile's Enaer participate in the development of the KC-390.

Lockheed however, while not overtly stating it is targeting Chile's business, says that it has had numerous inquires from South American nations for the C-130XJ. The aircraft is anywhere from 10% to 15% cheaper than the standard C-130J produced for the US Air Force.

"We've tried to tailor the XJ so that it can have a lower price point and still give them the capabilities that they need," says Lockheed's Jim Grant, who oversees the C-130XJ effort.
