Marine battalion of Indonesian Marine Corps has officially began using of five Ukrainian BTR-4M, which were delivered by “SpetsTechnoExport” in January this year. This was announced by director of “SpetsTechnoExport” Pavlo Barbul.

“The handover of new Ukrainian armoured personnel carriers BTR-4M to military units of the Indonesian Marine Cops has been completed. So, from early May, among other machines, Indonesian Marines are serving on BTR-4M. Before that, our APCs have successfully passed the trials in Indonesia and proved their excellent amphibian capabilities, shooting accuracy from different types of weapons and very good driving performance in mountainous terrain”, – said Pavlo Barbul.

Shall be recalled, that delivery of 5 armoured personnel carriers BTR 4-M, which are produced at Ukroboronprom’s Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau, was successfully completed within the framework of the contract, signed between the SE SFTE Spetstechnoexport and the Ministry of Defence of Indonesia in 2014.

Before accepting into operation, the Ministry of Defence of Indonesia conducted trial tests of the Ukrainian armoured personnel carriers in the territory of their country. Following the results of those tests, a Protocol was signed on performing functional tests. The special committee of the Ministry of Defence of Indonesia has confirmed, that Ukrainian made APCs comply with all 47 evaluation specifications of this Protocol

Indonesia to homeport newly commissioned Type 209/1400 submarine in Central Sulawesi

Ridzwan Rahmat - IHS Jane's Navy International

03 August 2017

Key Points
•The Indonesian Navy has commissioned its first new submarine in 36 years
•The diesel-electric platform’s base in Central Sulawesi will give it better access to disputed maritime areas in the region

The Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut: TNI-AL) will homeport its newly commissioned Type 209/1400 diesel-electric submarine (SSK) at the Palu Naval Base in the Watusampu province of Central Sulawesi, a source from the service confirmed with Jane’s on 3 August.

The vessel, which has been named KRI Nagapasa with pennant number 403, was officially handed over to the TNI-AL by South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) on 2 August, and commissioned on the same day by the TNI-AL. In attendance at the vessel’s commissioning ceremony, which was held at DSME’s Okpo shipyard on Geoje Island in South Korea, was Indonesian Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu, and TNI-AL chief Admiral Ade Supandi. Nagapasa will come under the establishment of the TNI-AL’s Eastern Fleet (Komando Armada RI Kawasan Timur: KOARMATIM).

Citing TNI-AL and DSME sources, Jane’s first revealed on 27 July that Nagapasa will be handed over on 2 August after a delay of more than four months. DSME originally indicated in March 2016, during Nagapasa ’s launching ceremony that the boat will be handed over in March 2017. The company has since attributed the delays to “the application of upgrades and modification on the submarine” without further elaborating what these modifications are, citing confidentiality concerns.

Indonesian Air Force will upgrade its fleet of F-16 Falcon fighter jets stationed at Roesmin Nurjadi airforce base with improved avionic systems at the Iswahjudi Air Force Base, East Java.

The F-16 A/B Block 15 OCU fighter aircraft, which are on duty at the Roesmin Nurjadi AFB are planned to be replaced with F-16 C/D Block 52ID that are available at the Iswahjudi Base since last year, Antara news agency reports Friday. The replacement process for US-made aircraft will take place in several stages until April 2018.

"The aircraft's avionic systems will be improved or upgraded at Iswahjudi," Information Dept Head of Air Force, Rear Air Marshall Jemy Trisonjaya, was quoted as saying.

Trisonjaya said that the plan aims to replace 16 Fighting Falcon aircraft to strengthen the Roesmin Nurjadin Base's capabilities, while the existing A/B-type aircraft will be upgraded at the Iswahjudi Base.

It was reported early this year that Indonesian F-16A/B fighters stationed at Iswahyudi Air Base will get Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods (ATP) sooner.

Indonesian Air Force operates two variants of F-16. They are General Dynamics F-16 A/B Block 15 OCU that procured under Project Peace Bima Sena I and F-16 C/D Block 52ID which were an upgraded version from F-16 Block 32 specially for Indonesia.

Video: Indonesian Marine Corps staged military training exercises with BTR-4M

By Dylan Malyasov - Nov 13, 2017 | Indonesia , Ukraine

Read news from Defence Blog at Flipboard.com | Subscribe to the newsletter from Defence Blog

Five amphibian APCs BTR-4M, supplied by Ukraine to Indonesia in 2016, continue to be successfully operated by the Marine Corps. That was reported by spetstechnoexport.com.

The Indonesian edition “Detik News” has published a special report on the exploitation of the latest Ukrainian APCs by Marine Corps. According to Marines, the main advantages of Ukrainian APCs are reliability, multi-purpose capability and ease of use.

During the sea trainings, Marines along with representatives of the BTR-4 developer Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau and supplier SFTE “SpetsTechnoExport”, have been conducting a special trainings to improve Marines practice of BTR-4 afloat maneuvering during high-waves.

Right afterward, at firing ground the crew of each BTR-4M hit successfully all targets at specified distances from a 30mm automatic gun ZTM-1 and 7.76mm machine gun PKT, that was quite a good showcase of accuracy rate of Ukrainian weapons. The Marine Corps Deputy Commander, who observed the trainings, was frankly impressed by the efficiency of the modern digital sighting and firing control system.

Visionary, there is very important for the Indonesian Marine Corps to operate a wheeled 8×8 formula APCs, which are fast, light, easy to maintain and operate at narrow asphalt routes. Moreover, after hundreds kilometers in mountainous terrains without any changes in the configuration they can not only overcome the water obstacles, but cross the sea on tens of kilometers as well.

Some media has reported about BTR-4 hull roll in the sea, but the military emphasizes that nothing similar takes place with the BTR-4M. Even during maneuvering on up to 1 meter waves, the movement of combat vehicles remained smooth and stable, BTRs with two types of combat modules immersed evenly in water without any vehicle hull roll or misalignment.

Upon completion of the training, the Marine Corps Deputy Commander entrusted gratitude to Ukrainian armourers for the production of a reliable equipment for Indonesia.

“SpetsTechnoExport” will continue to introduce the latest developments of the Ukrainian defense industry in international markets. BTR-4M for the Indonesian Marine Corps is a good case of a customized product for our specific partner: SpetsTechnoExport customized the standard configuration of BTR-4 to the requirements of Indonesian Marines. Other modifications of the BTR-4 will also be adapted and produced with the support and participation of our company”, – Pavlo Barbul, Director of SpetsTechnoExport said.

Should be noted that since the beginning of 2017, five BTR-4M have successfully passed all trial tests, participated in a 100-kilometer march in mountainous terrains. Following the results of those tests, a Protocol on performing functional tests was signed. The special committee of the Ministry of Defence of Indonesia has confirmed, that BTR-4M comply with all evaluation specifications of the Protocol and APC’s were accepted into operation by the Marine Corps.

The production and supply of five BTR-4M was managed within a framework of the contract, signed in early 2014 between the Ministry of Defence of Indonesia and Ukrainian state foreign trade company “SpetsTechnoExport” (trade company of the “Ukroboronprom”).

Final ex-USAF F-16s set to be delivered to Indonesia

Gareth Jennings - Jane's Defence Weekly

08 December 2017

Indonesia is to shortly receive into service the last six surplus Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft acquired from the US Air Force (USAF), the service announced on 6 December.

A pilot from the USAF’s 514th Flight Test Squadron makes a high-speed pass in an Indonesian F-16C Fighting Falcon during a
functional check flight in November, at Hill Air Force Base in Utah. The jet is the last of 24 F-16s to be delivered to the
Indonesian Air Force as part of an acquisition agreement approved by the US government. (US Air Force)

The single-seat F-16C Block 25 aircraft were the last of 24 F-16C/D Block 25 aircraft that have been refurbished and upgraded by the USAF in the last five years. With the work now completed, they will embark on a five-day trans-Pacific crossing before arriving in-country in the coming days.

This refurbishment and upgrade to Block 52-standard of the former USAF and Air National Guard aircraft has taken place at the Ogden Air Logistics Complex which is headquartered at Hill Air Force Base (AFB) in Utah.

Indonesia receives first Apache Guardian attack helos, says report

Gabriel Dominguez - Jane's Defence Weekly

20 December 2017

The Indonesian Army (Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Darat: TNI-AD) received on 19 December the first three of eight AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters ordered from the United States, according to local media reports.

Indonesian news website detikNews, which published a photograph that same day showing one of the helicopters being unloaded from a US Air Force Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft, reported that the remaining five platforms are to be delivered in 2018.

In January 2015 the US Department of Defense awarded Boeing a USD296 million contract to supply Indonesia with eight AH-64E Apache Guardians. The contract represents the largest US sale of a new military platform to Indonesia since Washington lifted an arms embargo imposed on the Southeast Asian country from the 1990s until 2005.

Lockheed Martin was then contracted to supply the helicopters with fire-control sensors in the form of eight Lot 9 Modernised Target Acquisition Designations/Sight Pilot Night Vision Sensors (M-TADS/PNVS), as well as spares.

The latest development took place a day after Jane’s reported that Boeing had offered to expand industrial co-operation with Indonesia in support of the country’s programme to supply Apache Guardians and CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift transport helicopters.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Jakarta said on 13 December that Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu had met with Boeing’s Regional Sales Executive Yeong-Tae Pak to discuss co-operation on both procurement programmes.

Jane’s understands that the TNI-AD has a requirement for a total of 16 Apaches and that the contract for the initial eight aircraft includes options for the acquisition of an additional batch.

Indonesia Acquires Four Wing Loong I UAVs from China

26 Februari 2018

Indonesia has acquired four units of Wing Loong I UAVs with surface strike capabilities. Aircraft will be inducted with the country’s first composite
UAV aviation squadron in West Kalimantan (photo : Sina)

The Indonesian government has acquired four strike-capable Wing Loong I medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (MALE UAVs) from Chinese state-owned aerospace and defence company Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

A contract for the aircraft was signed in 2017, and the UAVs will be operated by the Indonesian Air Force’s (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Udara’s: TNI-AU’s) Aviation Squadron 51 (Skadron Udara 51), multiple sources from within the TNI headquarters in Cilangkap confirmed separately with Jane’s between 22 and 25 February.

Aviation Squadron 51 is based near the city of Pontianak in West Kalimantan, and the unit shares a runway with the Supadio International Airport. The squadron currently operates Israeli-made Aerostar tactical unmanned aircraft system (UAS) equipped with stabilised, gimbal-mounted electro-optic and infrared (EO/IR) sensor for surveillance missions. With the induction of the Wing Loong I, the unit will be Indonesia’s first composite UAV squadron with two different aircraft types.

The Wing Loong I was developed and manufactured by AVIC’s Chengdu Aircraft Design and Research Institute (CADI) subsidiary. It has a length of 8.7 m, a height of 2.8 m, and features a wingspan of 14 m. The aircraft has a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 1,150 kg and a payload capacity of 200 kg.

The UAV is powered by one piston engine, and has a service ceiling of 7,500 m (24,600 ft). It has a maximum range of approximately 108 n miles (200 km), and an endurance of about 20 hours. Payloads that can go on board the Wing Loong I include the DH-3010 search-and-rescue (SAR) radar, and the AVIC Luoyang LE380 EO/IR turret.

Final batch of M109A4 SPHs arrives in Indonesia

Gabriel Dominguez, London and Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

12 July 2018

A final batch of 18 M109A4 self-propelled howitzers (SPHs) arrived in Indonesia from Belgium on 9 July at the port of Tanjung Priok in Jakarta, an Indonesian Army (Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Darat: TNI-AD) official has told Jane’s .

As of 12 July the 155 mm SPHs were still with the port authorities and clearing customs formalities ahead of delivery to the TNI-AD, the source added. Local media reported that the equipment also includes four command posts and one mobile crane unit. The first batch of M109A4s was reportedly delivered in July 2017 as part of a contract signed with Belgium for 38 of the SPHs.

Key Points
•The Indonesian Navy is establishing a new unmanned naval aviation squadron
•Formation will initially operate the ScanEagle system that is being provided under a US assistance package

The Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut: TNI-AL) is establishing a new squadron to oversee the service’s unmanned naval aviation requirements.

TNI-AL sources told Jane’s that the new squadron will be known as Skadron Udara 700 (Aviation Squadron 700) and it will be based in Juanda Surabaya. The first equipment to be operated by Skadron Udara 700 would include the Insitu ScanEagle surveillance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Indonesia is currently anticipating the delivery of four Insitu ScanEagle UAVs and associated equipment, from the US government. The UAVs are being provided under a grant by the US government under a capacity-building programme for Southeast Asian navies known as the Maritime Security Initiative (MSI).

The MSI programme was first revealed by then US secretary of defense Ashton Carter at the 2015 iteration of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. The initiative seeks to improve maritime surveillance capabilities of Washington’s partners in the region: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The Philippines took delivery of six ScanEagle UAVs, which have been delivered as part of the MSI programme, in March 2018.

The Indonesian MSI package seeks to specifically improve the country’s maritime patrol capabilities, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance integration, and equipment maintenance capacity. The aim is to ensure that Jakarta has the capacity to adequately safeguard its maritime territories and economic resources, and contribute to regional security and stability, according to a note on the MSI programme published on a US government website.

Indonesia equips second KCR-60M attack craft with Chinese-made naval weapon

Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - Jane's Navy International

16 July 2018

Key Points
•Indonesia has removed missile launchers from its second KCR-60M fast attack craft, and replaced these with a Chinese-made naval gun
•The vessel has also been equipped with Chinese-made fire-control sensors and a combat management system

The Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut, or TNI-AL) has equipped its second KCR-60M fast attack craft, KRI Tombak (629), with a Chinese-made Type 630 30 mm close-in weapon system (CIWS) turret.

Tombak is the second-known KCR-60M vessel that has been modified to carry the six-barrelled weapon system. First-of-class KRI Sampari (628) received the same CIWS type in late 2017. Jane’s has been made to understand that both ships underwent the modifications at state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL’s facilities in Surabaya in a process supervised by engineers from China.

The Type 630 is essentially a Chinese version of the Russian-developed AK-630. It is being marketed by China Shipbuilding Trading Company (CSTC) as the “NG-18 30 mm six-barrelled naval gun”. It can engage low-flying aircraft at distances of up to 2,500 m, sea-skimming projectiles at up to 1,300 m, and can fire between 4,500 and 5,000 rds/min.

To accommodate the weapon system, missile launchers on both Tombak and Sampari have been removed, with the Type 630 turret installed on a pedestal at the stern position where a rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB) used to be positioned.

The RHIB has now been repositioned slightly forward to occupy the space that was previously installed with diagonally mounted missile launchers. These launchers were meant to have provided the vessel with anti-ship missile capabilities, and could deploy weapons such as the Chinese-made C-705.

In line with the installation of the Type 630, both Tombak and Sampari have also been equipped with Chinese-made fire-control sensors and combat management systems (CMS).
