Le constructeur suédois Saab a présenté son nouveau démonstrateur Gripen, surnommé Gripen Demo. La société française Thalès participe activement au développement de cet appareil remanié.

Parmi les nouveauté donc, ce chasseur possédera un moteur plus puissant, un nouveau radar et un nouveau système d'avionique. En outre, cet avion aura une charge utile plus importante et un plus grand rayon d'action.

Cette plateforme sera utilisée pour introduire de nouvelles fonctions et de nouvelles technologies sur le Gripen.

Saab est un constructeur populaire pour les nations n'ayant pas les moyens de s'acheter un Eurofighter Typhoon, un Rafale ou un appareil de Dassault bien chers et désirant se séparer du grand frère américain. Le Gripen, bon marché par rapport aux autres chasseurs, bien que moins bien équipé et moins performant, répond à leurs attentes.

Gripen Demo, a new flying development platform for current and future generations of Gripen, is unvealed today for the first time. One of the new features is a completely new radar, that Saab is developing in collaboration with the French company Thales.

In addition, Saab, together with Thales, will develop a completely new type of radar. The development will mean that Gripen will be able to maintain its position at the cutting edge of development for the next 30 - 40 years. Gripen Demo will fly for the first time during 2008," says Åke Svensson, CEO of Saab.

The flying test platform, Gripen Demo, will be used to introduce new technology and functions to Gripen. The new capabilities could be the basis for a totally new version and will be completely or partially integrated into current versions of Gripen.

The development of Gripen is done in collaboration with some of the world´s leading companies within the aircraft industry: General Electric, Volvo Aero, Rockwell Collins, Honeywell, APPH, Terma, Martin-Baker and Meggitt. The latest in the line is Thales, which means that two of the world´s leading radar developers are now collaborating to equip Gripen with the most advanced AESA radar technology (Active Electronically Scanned Array).

On behalf of the Swedish Government, FMV (Swedish Defence Materiel Administration) today handed over Sweden’s proposal regarding Norway’s Future Combat Aircraft.


28/04/2008 | The 48 Gripen fighters that Sweden has offered to Norway meets all the requirements that Norway has specified in the request documentation for the Royal Norwegian Air Force Future Combat Aircraft.

The Gripen fighter for Norway is a true swing-role, next generation combat fighter to meet Norway’s needs for the defence of its national territory, including surveillance of the high North, and participation in international, multi-national forces. Gripen is fully NATO interoperable, can carry a wide range of internationally sourced weapons, includes increased combat range and endurance, additional weapons carriage capability and increased payload, a more powerful engine and super cruise capability. The proposal also includes a joint logistic solution and other areas of multi-national co-operation that will reduce the operational cost for both countries.

Besides the operational requirements, the Swedish offer meets the Norwegian requirements regarding life cycle costs and the Swedish offer includes very low acquisition, operation and support costs compared to alternative platforms.

Analysis: Why 2009 could be the year of the Gripen

The next 18 months will see Brazil, Croatia, Denmark, India, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania and Switzerland make final selections for their respective fighter procurement competitions, with sales of up to 523 aircraft worth at least USD35 billion-USD40 billion at stake.

It will be a truly crucial period in shaping the future of the global fighter market.

The common link between these eight contests is the presence of the Saab Gripen in the bidding process. So far the Gripen's success in the export market has been limited, with contracts for 60 aircraft in place across the Czech Republic (14), Hungary (14), South Africa (26) and Thailand (6). Saab hopes, and Jane's Defence Forecasts believes, that the next 18 months may see this number increase significantly.

Competition is fierce to fill these eight national requirements, with the following among the Gripen's competitors in the various contests: Boeing's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet; Dassault's Rafale; the Eurofighter Typhoon; Lockheed Martin's F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-35 Lightning II; and RAC MiG's MiG-35.

Jane's believes the Gripen team has reasons for optimism, however.

First of all, in terms of the aircraft's capability, Saab is offering its enhanced Gripen NG (Next Generation) variant for the Brazilian, Danish, Dutch, Indian and Norwegian requirements, which incorporates a number of significant improvements over the baseline Gripen C/D. These enhancements include: an active electronically scanned array radar developed in conjunctionwith Thales (due to begin flight testing in 2009); General Electric F-414G engines, which provide increased thrust and maximum take-off weight; additional weapons stores; enhanced avionics and electronic warfare capabilities; and increased range.

These new capabilities are currently being developed through the Gripen Demonstrator programme, which was approved by Sweden's Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) in October 2007 and unveiled the following April. According to Saab, further enhancements will be rolled out in three-year increments, to enable continuous development of the platform over the life of the programme and removing the need for comprehensive and expensive mid-life upgrade programmes. Development and incorporation of specific customer-funded requirements is also envisaged as part of a 50-year programme plan.

While currently in the developmental stage, the Gripen NG programme would be accelerated in the event of a contract win and the aircraft would be available to enter service from 2014.

With regard to cost, the Gripen NG is viewed by Jane's as competitive in terms of both acquisition and through-life support costs when compared to its rivals. Bob Kemp, sales and marketing director for Gripen International, citing figures produced for the Dutch fighter contest, said Saab believes that the Gripen NG, as part of an 85-aircraft fleet, would cost EUR6 billion (USD7.6 billion) less than the F-35 in terms of life-cycle costs over a 30-year period.

At a unit cost of between USD50 million andUSD60 million, the Gripen also offers the lowest-cost platform in terms of acquisition expenditure. By comparison, according to Fiscal Year 2009 US Air Force (USAF) and US Navy (USN) budgetary documentation, the unit costs of the F-35 and F/A-18E/F are USD83.1 million and USD82.7 million respectively.

Unsurprisingly in such a competitive market, each of the contenders in these fighter contests has its strengths and weaknesses and much will depend on the specific circumstances, priorities and requirements of the customer nations. As such, some contests are better suited to the Gripen proposal than others, particularly in Europe.

Saab celebrates 'supercruise' test success for Gripen Demo

Saab's Gripen Demo aircraft has passed a significant milestone in its ongoing test programme, with the two-seater having on 21 January demonstrated its "supercruise" performance for the first time.

Company test pilot Magnus Ljungdahl says the aircraft was flown to a speed of more than Mach 1.2 at 28,000ft (8,540m) above the Baltic Sea, and adds: "Without using afterburner I maintained the same speed until I ran out of test area." The sortie was conducted from Saab's Linköping test centre.

Saab says the supercruise event forms part of a test campaign that will see the Gripen Demo (pictured below during an earlier test flight) flown at supersonic speeds carrying a variety of loads.


The current test aircraft is intended to de-risk new technologies for a Gripen NG model already being promoted to potential future buyers including Brazil, Denmark and Switzerland. These include the demonstrator's General Electric F414G engine and an active electronically scanned array radar that should enter flight-testing later this year.

"To show potential customers that Gripen can supercruise is an important milestone", says Gripen International marketing director Bob Kemp.

Thailand Shelves Follow-on Gripen Acquisition


The acquisition of six additional Swedish Gripen fighters by the Royal Thai Air Force has fell victim to the economic turmoil in Thailand. The Thai government decided to slash half a billion $US (20 billion Baht) off the current national defense budget, and most of the amount is expected to be saved by the elimination of about 15 billion baht, slated for the acquisition of the six additional Gripens.
Thailand has already acquired six Gripen fighter jets at a cost of 19 billion baht, to be delivered in 2010, replacing aging F-5 fighters scheduled to be decommissioned in 2011. While the decision is not likely to have a critical effect on the air force operations in the near term, since the Gripens has yet to entered operational service, it will have implications of the life cycle cost of the small fleet. The Thais will find that supporting such a small fleet will be extremely expensive and the operational benefit of only six aircraft will be questionable. Therefore, they are likely to revisit their decision in the future, as the economical and political conditions in the country improve.

je parle juste sur un plan technique, sur ce point, il a tout pour avoir sa place chez les FAR (dans un futur proche comme remplacant des F5T3,MF2000) , je m auto-cite (petit,rustique, facile d entretien, taillé pour l autodefense .cout de l heure de vole reduit je presume, peut etre pas l avion le plus impressionant sur le marché, mais quoiqu il en sois dissuasive dans un role defensive.)

je rajouterait interopérabilité (capable d utilisé aussi bien l armement us que francais ou européen ou israelien (AIM9X,AIM120,MICA,METEOR,PYTHON...au choix du client)

Gripen NG : démonstration de vol de phase test 2

SAAB ont commencé à voler de phase 2 cette semaine. L'avion vole maintenant avec MAWS, AESA et autres nouveaux composants installés au cours de l'été.

Saab's Gripen Demo aircraft has made its first test flight since receiving a key technology on offer to potential export customers including Brazil, India and Switzerland.

Now equipped with the antenna and other elements of Selex Sensors and Airborne Systems' Vixen 1000E/ES05 Raven active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, the two-seat demonstrator resumed its flight activities on 27 October, when it performed a sortie from Saab's Linköping site in Sweden.

The heavily modified B-model aircraft had been on the ground in refit for the last several months, during which time Saab integrated its AESA array, new satellite communications equipment and additional internal fuel capacity. It has also gained new electro-optical radar warning receivers and missile approach warning sensors developed by Saab Avitronics.

The Demo airframe has now completed more than 80 flights since May 2008, and is being used to de-risk technologies intended for use with Saab's future NG (new generation) production standard of the Gripen.

The type has already been shortlisted in competitions in Brazil, India and Switzerland, and will equip the Swedish air force from 2014.

Selex says flight tests of its new AESA design, which uses a unique "swashplate" mounting to significantly boost the sensor's area of coverage, will also support the technology's possible future integration with the Eurofighter Typhoon.

The UK Ministry of Defence earlier this year confirmed a desire to equip its Tranche 3 Typhoons with AESA radars, and industry sources say a flight-test programme with the Selex design is expected to take place from 2012. EADS has previously flown an AESA array on a Eurofighter development aircraft in Germany.
