- Venezuela signs up for VN1, hints at Chinese amphibious vehicles buy
Richard D Fisher Jr, Washington, DC and James Hardy, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
Venezuelan officials inspected VN18 amphibious vehicles at a Norinco facility earlier in 2014, according to images posted on the Venezuelan Navy's Twitter feed. Source: Venezuelan Navy
Images from the official Twitter account of the Venezuelan Navy indicate that the Bolivarian Naval Infantry could soon be equipped with three different Chinese amphibious fighting vehicles: a development that would make Venezuela's marines one of the most potent amphibious forces in Latin America.
Images posted on 16 November show a delegation led by Venezuelan Admiral Jairo Avendano Quintero receiving the VN1 8x8 wheeled amphibious infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), while others show the delegation inspecting VN18 and VN16 amphibious IFVs, apparently at a China North Industries Corporation (Norinco) plant.
The Venezuelan Navy confirmed the VN1 purchase in July and the most recent images probably date from then. The number of vehicles to be acquired has not been disclosed.
The VN1 purchase stems from a 2012 contract for USD500 million, reportedly funded in part by Chinese soft loans and Venezuelan oil shipments, that followed a 2010 decision by then president Hugo Chavez to double the size of the marines. In 2010 the Naval Infantry was credited with 7,000 troops while in 2014 reports of its numbers vary between 7,000 and 11,000.
Venezuela's purchase of the VN1 marks its first foreign sale. The 21-tonne VN1 carries a crew of three plus seven dismounts, can be armed with a 30 mm cannon or a smaller machine gun, has a top speed of 100 km/h, and a range of 800 km. It comes in a number of versions: command; electronic warfare; ambulance; and armoured recovery, although it is not known which versions Venezuela has bought.
If concluded, Venezuela's purchase of the VN18 and VN16 would be the platforms' first foreign sale. They first appeared in People's Liberation Army and People's Liberation Army Navy Marines service in 2006 as the ZBD-05 and the ZTD-05 respectively.
A brochure released by Norinco at Eurosatory 2014 said the aluminum-hulled VN18 has a combat weight of 26.5 tonnes, a top land speed of 65 km/h, a top water speed of 25 km/h and can carry a crew of three plus 11 dismounts. It is armed with a 30 mm cannon and co-axial 7.62 machine gun in a stabilised turret and also has a computerised fire-control system.
The VN16 is armed with a stabilised 105 mm cannon that can fire a version of Norinco's 5 km-range GP-2 gun-launched anti-tank missile, developed from the Russian 9M117 Bastion 4 km-range gun-launched missile. The VN18 and VN16 would supplement Venezuela's inventory of between 7 and 11 US-supplied LVTP-7 tracked amphibious assault vehicles.
The VN18 and VN16s will be likely to embark Venezuela's new 730-tonne displacement Los Frailes-class landing craft utility (LCU) ships, which are being built by Cuba's DAMEX Shipyard: a joint-venture with Damen Shipyard Group of the Netherlands. Three of the ships have been delivered, while the fourth was launched at the Damex shipyard in Santiago Bay in June.
COMMENT
Venezuela has become an important first customer for Chinese land systems, writes James Hardy . In 2013 IHS Jane's reported that the Venezuelan National Guard had acquired 141 VN4 4x4 light armoured vehicles. In addition to the VN4, China is believed to have upgraded up to 500 of Venezuela's original Type 63 light amphibious tanks with enhanced amphibious capability and the installation of a new welded-steel turret with increased ballistic protection.
Venezuela has also taken delivery of Type 86 IFV (an upgraded version of the Russian BMP-1 IFV), Type 63 command post vehicles, and PLZ89 122 mm self-propelled artillery systems: equipment that provided the Venezuelan marines with a significant increase in overall capability.

- Iran provides Latin America countries with UAV
Iran provides Venezuela with drones, head of Iranian parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said, the Islamic Republic Fars news agency reported Dec. 8.
Boroujerdi said that Iranian made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are operational in Venezuela over the past several years. He added that Mexico also is keen to import Iran-made drones.
“During my recent visit to Mexico they announced that want Iranian drones,” Boroujerdi said.
Earlier in 2012 some western media outlets reported that Iran is planning to build drones for the Venezuelan military. In 2013 Venezuela reportedly launched Iran-built drones to patrol drug trafficking.
The Islamic Republic has so far produced various drones, including Ababil, Fotros, Hazem, Karrar (long range attack drone), Mohajer, Sarir, Shahed 129, Yasir and Zohal.
Iran unveiled its first homemade fighter drone that carries air-to-air missiles on Sept. 23.
The Iranian media outlets reported that the drone is capable of destroying all types of aircrafts including fighters, small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and helicopters.
The country unveiled its first domestically manufactured long-range UAV named Karrar in 2010. The first Iranian medium-altitude long-endurance UAV, the Shahed-129 was unveiled in September 2012, which is capable of carrying out combat and reconnaissance eight missions for 24 hours and has a range of 1,700 km.
The country also unveiled its largest yet homemade UAV, titled 'Fotros' in 2013. Fotros has a range of some 2,000 kilometers and is capable of launching air-to-surface missile strikes. The drone can fly at an altitude of 25,000 feet, with a flight time of 16 to 30 hours.
Iran started mass production of the "Yasir" UAV in September 2013. Yasir can fly at an altitude of 15,000 ft., be in flight for eight hours, cover the distance of 200 km, and does not need a runway. The UAV is equipped with light powerful modern cameras, and can precisely control the target.

- Venezuelan, Russian Troops Stage Large-Scale Military Exercises
The Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said that the nation's military is conducting massive air defense and artillery drills involving visiting Russian troops and hardware.
MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — The Venezuelan military is conducting massive air defense and artillery drills involving visiting Russian troops and hardware, the nation's Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said Saturday.
The 10-day war games have been ordered by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who spoke of pressure coming from the United States earlier this month.
The Venezuelan government has been concerned about US President Barack Obama's new executive order, published Monday, which described the South American country as "unusual and extraordinary threat" to US national security and foreign policy.
Around 10,000 Venezuelan troops are taking part in the massive military exercises, which also involve Chinese crews, according to Venezuela's Noticias24 website.
The drills come in the wake of a February visit by Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who discussed military and technical cooperation with his Venezuelan counterpart in Caracas.
Venezuelan forces have shown increased interest in Russian military aid. Russian-made military equipment has substantially strengthened the capacity of Venezuela's armed forces, according to Lopez.
Russia is actively pursuing defence cooperation with South American countries, which includes the sales of weaponry, the construction of naval maintenance and resupply facilities, as well as the occasional use of local airbases for hosting Russian strategic bombers on global patrol missions.

- Venezuela holds military exercise, raising tensions with Guyana
[ 23 September 2015 04:53 ]
Baku-APA. Venezuela said Tuesday it is conducting military exercises in the eastern part of the country, a move neighboring Guyana denounced as an "extraordinary escalation" of an ongoing border dispute, APA reports quoting Reuters.
Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said the troop buildup, which Guyana had noticed with concern, was an "operational deployment exercise." He said Venezuelans could rest assured "because we are really preparing ourselves ... even with all the fronts we face today," alluding to simultaneous border tensions with Guyana and Colombia. Guyana's President David Granger said his cabinet was meeting with military and police chiefs to craft a response to Venezuela's movement of naval vessels and ground forces in the area. Venezuela has been pressing claims to Guyana's Essequibo region, which encompasses two-thirds of the former British colony, since Exxon Mobil discovered oil in disputed waters off its coast earlier this year. "We feel that Venezuela is treading a dangerous course at this point in time rather than seeking a peaceful resolution of the matter," Granger told reporters. "Venezuela seems to be pursuing a very offensive and aggressive course," he added. "What we have noticed during the month of September is an extraordinary escalation of Venezuelan military activity in eastern Venezuela," said the retired brigadier. Calling the military build-up "very provocative," he said he would be raising the issue in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly next week. Granger had said previously he will tell UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that Guyana is no longer interested in continuing a 23-year old mediation process, which Venezuela wants to revive. Granger instead wants the International Court of Justice in the Hague to settle the border dispute. Guyana maintains that valid land borders were set in an 1899 arbitration court decision, a ruling Venezuela has never recognized. The latest round of recriminations followed Exxon Mobil's announcement May 20 it had made a significant oil discovery in an offshore concession granted by Georgetown. Venezuela countered by unilaterally extending its maritime boundaries to include waters off the Essequibo region. The tensions lately have been overshadowed by a month-long crisis on Venezuela's western border, which saw thousands of Colombians flee the country amid a government crackdown on migrants and smuggling. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his Colombian counterpart Juan Manuel Santos agreed Monday to restore diplomatic contacts and work out their differences.
