14:40 GMT, February 10, 2010 Donauwörth | The CH-53GA medium-lift military transport helicopter successfully completed its maiden flight over the Bavarian town of Donauwörth today before an admiring crowd of approximately 150 guests. Eurocopter test pilot Rene Nater and flight engineer Antoine Van Gent were at the controls. This first flight came just three years after the contract was awarded, and represents a major milestone for the CH-53GA program, as well as for Eurocopter Germany's support centre for the German Army helicopters. Thanks to the new upgrades, the helicopter’s service life has been extended to 2030. Training flights are slated for early 2011, with the first deliveries of the retrofitted helicopters later in the same year. The German Armed Forces will then be able to deploy the CH-53GA with its state-of-the-art equipment for international missions (e.g. Afghanistan).

As Senior Vice-President Ralf Barnscheidt, responsible for German military contracts at Eurocopter Deutschland GmbH, points out: “Over the past 30 years, the Eurocopter support centre for German Army helicopters has completed many important upgrades on the CH-53G transport helicopter, working in cooperation with the Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung (Federal Agency for Defense Technology and Procurement). I am extremely pleased to see the CH53-GA flying today, as it further demonstrates the successful cooperation we enjoy with the German Armed Forces that has enabled us to complete the program on time and within budget.”


Functional Requirements – Optimized Implementation

The CH-53G is being retrofitted so that the helicopter can be deployed in a wide range of national and international missions. The following major functional requirements for the CH-53GA have been defined and embodied:

• Improved display and flight control systems via state-of-the-art digital avionics
• Advanced accurate navigation system and improved flight capabilities in line with international IFR flight regulations
• Integration of a new automatic flight control systemAFCS/4-axis-autopilot) with automatic hovering
• Installation of auxiliary fuel tanks in the cabin to increase the range to 1,200 km
• Upgrade of communication equipment for joint missions with Tiger and NH90 helicopters
• Integration of a modular mission equipment package including FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared), satellite communication system (SatCom) and a cutting-edge electronic warfare system (EWS) for self-defense and identification of threats

Production work on the CH-53GA is scheduled to start at the Donauwörth plant in 2011 and continue through 2013. The first helicopters will be made available to the German Army before the end of 2011.


The CH-53G in Action – Domestic and International Missions

The CH-53G has been in service for over 35 years, and in the years to come it will continue to form the backbone of the German Army’s deployments in foreign missions. The helicopter is used to harsh conditions. Since entering service it has been the cornerstone of the German Army's versatile troop and equipment transport units as part of the country's NATO obligations, and has also been an important platform for operations in foreign missions in cooperation with other NATO forces. The helicopter has served in conflicts from Kosovo to Kabul since the early 1990s. In addition, it has been deployed in numerous missions to provide aid during national and international catastrophes such as forest fires and floods. The CH53GA will meet the German Army’s need to expand the mission capabilities of its medium-lift transport helicopters for domestic missions and deployment abroad.


Working Closely with the German Army

Eurocopter’s support center for German Army helicopters at Donauwörth is under contract to retrofit a total of 40 medium-lift CH-53G transport helicopters to CH-53GA configuration. The work includes the repair of airframe fatigue due to extensive use and ageing in order to extend the helicopters’ design life from 6,000 to 10,000 flight hours. The entire electrical system, which is nearly 35 years old, will also be replaced. The entire support center for German Army helicopters is involved in the development work on the CH-53GA. The center has experienced substantial growth over the last twenty years; the work force of 69 employees in 1991 has increased to 530 employees today, and still shows an upward trend.

pas de door-gunner donc a defendre en landing de l´exterieur,la cellule tellement sensible que des infantristes plus lourds que 110kg ne peuvent pas etre servis(donc pas d´infantristes du futur),la rampe trop faible et pas convenable pour les in/out,le sol trop sensible pour hommes et palettes en meme temps,transpost de lourd comme milan,mortiers et stinger pas possible,le "fast roppe"-descendre par corde-specialité des KSK et paratroups impossible

Le NH90 ayant vocation à remplacer les Bell UH-1D, j'aimerais bien lire le cahier des charges que la Bundeswehr a établi pour cette machine et le rapport produit par l'armée de terre. Une remarque toute simple: l'utilisation du canonnier de bord a t-elle été prévue en même temps que l'usage d'un groupe de combat, et de combien de soldats est constitué ce groupe de combat lorsqu'un un canonnier de bord est requis?

Je viens de découvrir que l'on parle là de machines de pré-série en cours de test dans la troupe et dont les défauts ont été rapportés au constructeur afin qu'il résolve ces problèmes... Rolling Eyes

The German Air Force is preparing to deploy its first Israeli Heron 1 UAV to Afghanistan in March 2010, following the completion of the first air force UAV crew's training in Israel.
The air force's first eight UAV operators completed training as aerial vehicle and payload operators in January, according to defensenews.com.
Air force personnel and civilian maintainers had been received training since late 2009 on how to operate the Heron 1 UAV platform.
The air force acquired the Heron 1 from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) as an urgent requirement for a MALE UAV capability.
The Heron 1 is capable of offering all-weather, day-and-night intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) support.
It can carry a 500lb payload, and simultaneously conduct missions up to 24 hours long, depending on the particular mission fit.
Synthetic aperture radar, electro-optical and infrared sensors, and a datalink to transmit full-motion video in near-real time are included in the Heron 1 payload.
On 5 February, the air force's first UAV squadron, under Aufklarungsgeschwader 51 (Reconnaissance Wing 51), based at Schleswig-Jagel in northern Germany, became operational.
IAI, working jointly with Germany's Rheinmetall Defence on the UAV project, will deliver three Heron I UAV and two ground stations to the German Air Force in 2010.

German Army Report Highlights NH90 Deficiencies

An internal German Army report has provided a damning assessment of the German military's new NHIndustries NH90 multi-purpose helicopter. The 103-page document assesses the helicopter's current operational capability as extremely limited, and highlights a range of deficiencies. Compiled by the Luftlande- und Lufttransportschule (Airborne and Air Transport School), the report recommends using alternative aircraft whenever possible in an operational scenario.

Key problems outlined by the military include excessively limited ground clearance that prohibits soldiers' entry and exit except when on hard surfaces that are free of obstacles greater than 16 centimeters. Within the cabin, the seats are considered capable of accommodating only soldiers who weigh less than 110 kilograms with their gear. The German Army's latest Infantrie der Zukunft (Future Soldier) personal equipment weighs 25 kilos.

Limited internal dimensions mean that an infantry team can be carried only if team members leave their personal weapons and kit on the floor, where the items cannot be secured. The floor has proven so sensitive that it can be damaged by dirty boots, and the rear ramp is unable to support fully equipped soldiers, limiting its use for rapid entry and disembarkation.

Heavier infantry weapons, such as the Stinger man-portable surface-to-air missile and MILAN anti-armor missile, cannot currently be transported, since strap-down attachments are not provided. The transport of combined loads of troops and cargo is also prohibited.

The limited cabin space means there is no defensive machine gun and door-gunner.

The helicopter's winch is not powerful enough for the fast-roping of commando teams or boarding parties. The NH90 is also unable to deliver paratroops using automatic release, the report states.
German Orders for NH90s

The German military has placed orders worth around 4.6 billion euros ($6.2 billion) for 122 NH90s, which are to be used by both the German Army and Luftwaffe. A modified version earmarked for the German Navy has suffered from delays and technical difficulties. A firm order for this MH90 variant has yet to be placed. The latest order of June 2007 added a further 42 helicopters (30 for the Army and 12 for the Luftwaffe) to the previous 80-aircraft order placed in June 2000. The 12 latest Luftwaffe aircraft were to be provided with eight kits for combat-search-and-rescue (CSAR) duties.

These were to incorporate armor protection, in-flight refueling capability, improved countermeasures and defensive weapons. The CSAR modification was abandoned in 2008 as impracticable.

The German Army became the first recipient of the production NH90, accepting three aircraft in December 2006. Initial aircraft are currently used for training with the Army Air Corps Weapons School at Bückeburg.

NHIndustries did not respond to requests for comment by press time.
