BAE Systems near $800 million Saudi Hawk deal: report
(Reuters) - BAE Systems (BAES.L) is close to sealing a 500 million pounds ($808 million) deal to sell up to 30 Hawk trainer aircraft to Saudi Arabia, the Sunday Times reported.
The sale would provide some welcome relief for the defense giant, which is battling against shrinking defense budgets in Europe and America.
Saudi Arabia has ordered 72 Eurofighter Typhoon jets from BAE and needs the Hawks to train its pilots.
The order is expected to be finalized within the next few months but it is likely to come too late to save the 845 jobs at BAE's Hawk factory in Brough, Yorkshire, which is set to close.
BAE is Britain's biggest manufacturing company, with 100,000 employees around the globe. It is building two aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy and is a key partner on the Joint Strike Fighter, the world's biggest military aircraft program.
BAE declined comment when contacted by Reuters.
($1 = 0.6189 British pounds)

Pilatus PC-21s in package deal with Hawks for Saudi air force
The Saudi Arabian air force could buy 55 Pilatus PC-21s to serve as a lead-in pilot trainer as part of a broader deal in negotiation with BAE Systems that includes resuming production of Hawk T128/T2 advanced jet trainers, according to sources familiar with the transaction.
The Saudi order for PC-21s and Hawks is expected to be confirmed in less than two months, with BAE serving as the prime contractor for both deals, sources say. BAE declines to comment about any potential new Saudi aircraft deals. Such a deal would preserve both airframers' tight grip on pilot training requirements for the Saudi air force at a critical moment for both aircraft programmes.

Pilatus needs a new order soon to continue production of the PC-21, after completing deliveries to the air forces of the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland. BAE also has proposed offering PC-21s to the UK Ministry of Defence under the military flying training system (MFTS) programme. Meanwhile, BAE needs a new order to restart production of the venerable Hawk series, with potential follow-on trainer deals for the US Air Force and Poland.
The Saudi air force continues to operate 47 PC-9s delivered by BAE as part of a package deal with Hawks under an Al Yamamah order placed in the mid-1980s, according to the Flightglobal MiliCAS database. The air force's current inventory also includes 29 Hawk 65/65As delivered under the same programme, the MiliCAS data shows.

UK and Saudi Arabia agree deal on officer and aircrew training
The United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia have reached agreement for the UK to support a programme that will provide the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) with cutting-edge officer and aircrew training
The UK will provide the capability required, in particular to support the introduction and operation of its growing fleet of fourth generation Typhoon fighter aircraft. The advanced aircrew training capability introduced by this programme is designed to result in the standard of graduating students being higher in terms of both capability and readiness.
Under the agreement, the RSAF will receive 22 BAE Systems Hawk Advanced Jet Trainers (AJT), 55 PC-21 advanced turboprop trainers, 25 primary training aircraft, and a variety of advanced aircrew training devices, upgraded training facilities, and initial spares support.
Hawk AJT will eventually replace the RSAF's current fleet of Hawk Mark 65/65a trainers, reflecting the Saudi Arabian Government's confidence, both in the outstanding capabilities of the Hawk family of advanced jet trainers and the UK's ability to continue to meet Saudi Arabia's legitimate defence requirements.
The UK Government warmly welcomes the Saudi Arabian Government's decision to confirm UK support for its officer and aircrew training requirements.
