BAE Systems Interim Management Statement

06:58 GMT, October 12, 2012 BAE Systems plc yesterday (11 October) issued its Interim Management Statement for the period from 1 July 2012 to 10 October 2012 in accordance with the requirements of the UK Listing Authority's Disclosure Rules and Transparency Rules.

Trading for the period has been consistent with management expectations at the time of the half-year results announcement on 2 August 2012. As indicated previously, modest growth in underlying earnings per share is anticipated for 2012, assuming a satisfactory conclusion to the pricing negotiations this year with the Saudi Arabian government on the Typhoon Salam programme and excluding the benefit in 2011 of the Research & Development tax settlement. A higher level of operating business cash inflow is planned for the Group in 2012 including the anticipated benefit of cash receipts related to the Salam programme.

MARKET ENVIRONMENT

In the UK, the defence environment remains stable following the significant changes to priorities identified by the Strategic Defence and Security Review in 2010.

Uncertainty as to how US federal deficit reduction will be implemented, including possible sequestration measures, continues to cloud the outlook for the US government defence budget. Some limited trading disruption is likely in the last quarter of the 2012 calendar year as the US government operates under a Continuing Resolution from 1 October 2012.

NEW BUSINESS

In August, the UK government reaffirmed its commitment to the Type 26 next generation of Royal Navy frigates, detailing the requirements for replacing Type 23 frigates from 2021.

In the US, BAE Systems received a $306 million (£190 million) contract modification to upgrade 353 Bradley fighting vehicles, funding the programme into 2014.

In August, BAE Systems, as part of the industry team led by Lockheed Martin, was one of three down-selected for the Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase of the US government’s potentially large Joint Light Tactical Vehicle programme.

In Saudi Arabia, following the award of a £1.6 billion contract in May to support the Royal Saudi Air Force’s future aircrew training requirements, BAE Systems has been awarded a six-month extension to the current aircraft support contract on the Typhoon Salam programme. Negotiations with the customer continue in respect of the Typhoon Salam programme for the next five years of support, the construction of maintenance and upgrade facilities in-Kingdom, and for capability enhancement. Negotiations also continue on the Saudi British Defence Co-operation Programme for the next five years of support, including additional awards associated with the training environment and weapons procurement. These negotiations cover contracts worth in excess of £7 billion.

Contract negotiations with the Omani Ministry of Defence for the supply of 12 Typhoon Tranche 3 aircraft and associated support are expected to be concluded this year.

In South Korea, BAE Systems was selected as the sole source systems integration contractor to upgrade more than 130 F-16 aircraft. This is a significant win with the potential for further business in a large addressable market for F-16 avionics upgrades.

M&A ACTIVITY

Portfolio streamlining in the Land & Armaments business has continued. In July, the disposals of the Group’s US-based Safariland, LLC business and assets comprising its Tensylon High Performance Materials Inc. business were completed for cash consideration of approximately $124m (£77m) and $18m (£11m), respectively.

TERMINATION OF TALKS REGARDING THE POSSIBLE MERGER OF BAE SYSTEMS AND EADS N.V. (EADS)

On 12 September 2012, BAE Systems announced that it was in discussions with EADS regarding a possible combination of their businesses. As discussions progressed further over recent weeks, it became clear that the interests of the parties’ government stakeholders could not be adequately reconciled with each other or with the objectives that BAE Systems and EADS established for the merger. BAE Systems and EADS therefore announced on 10 October 2012 that it was in the best interests of their companies and shareholders to terminate the discussions and to continue to focus on delivering their respective strategies.

In that announcement, Ian King, Chief Executive of BAE Systems, said:

“We are obviously disappointed that we were unable to reach an acceptable agreement with our various government stakeholders. We believe the merger presented a unique opportunity for BAE Systems and EADS to combine two world class and complementary businesses to create a world leading aerospace, defence and security group.

However, our business remains strong and financially robust. We continue to see opportunities across our platforms and services offerings and in the various international markets in which we operate. We remain committed to delivering total shareholder value and look to the future with confidence.”

FULL YEAR RESULTS

BAE Systems will announce its financial results for the year ending 31 December 2012 on 21 February 2013.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting of BAE Systems plc will be held on 8 May 2013.

FIRST EUROFIGHTER TYPHOON METEOR FIRING TRIAL A SUCCESS

The Meteor Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile has been successfully launched from a Eurofighter Typhoon as part of the Future Enhancements Flight Test Programme.

The missile was eject launched from a rear fuselage missile station, which on Eurofighter Typhoon is semi-conformal for aircraft drag and radar signature reduction. The missile motor was fired, providing data that will allow the missile launch envelope to be expanded.

This builds on an earlier series of flight trials, carried out by partner company BAE Systems on behalf of the Eurofighter programme, where unpowered missiles were used to demonstrate safe separation on the missile.
This current package of work begins the full integration of the Meteor missile with all Eurofighter Typhoon systems.

The flight trials were conducted with integrated support from QinetiQ and MBDA.
After taking part in the Meteor trials, BAE Systems Typhoon Test Pilot Steve Long said: “By completing these initial Meteor flight trials, Typhoon has taken a significant leap forward in operational capability. As a fighter pilot, you ultimately want the best possible combination of aircraft and advanced weapons to ensure mission success and to get you home safely. The range and performance of the Meteor weapon goes a long way to achieving this - with confidence. A potent long range missile, coupled with a highly agile aircraft gives us a very potent and very powerful mix.”

Meteor, a beyond visual range air-to-air missile manufactured by MBDA will provide the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft with the next generation of cutting edge weapons capability. Featuring advanced air breathing motor technology for maximum range and the latest electronics to deliver optimum combat performance, it will ensure that Eurofighter Typhoon remains the world’s most advanced multi role aircraft and will further complement its short and medium range air-to-air missile capabilities.

The integration of the Meteor weapon is a game-changer on the battlefield; adding another layer to Eurofighter Typhoon’s swing-role capabilities and ensuring the pilot is able to engage hostile air threats at long range at the same time as identifying and engaging targets on the ground.

UAE likely to buy 60 Eurofighter Typhoon jets

The latest version of Typhoon that the UAE intends to purchase
is governed by some tactical and technical capabilities of the fighter
Abu Dhabi: The UAE is likely to purchase 60 Eurofighter Typhoon jets as a UAE
military team had started negotiations with British company since December 2012
on “certain specifications to meet the requirements of the UAE Armed Forces”, a
senior official said.

“The UAE Armed Forces are in talks with us for a purchase of 60 Typhoon
fighters,” Joe Parker, Eurofighter Director of Export, told the Gulf News in an
interview.

The list price of the fighter starts from Dh320 million (65 million
euros).

“There are positive indications,” said Parker, without disclosing any
information about the specifications required by the UAE and refusing to
announce the price of each fighter as this is “governed by the significant
modifications and specifications ordered by the UAE Armed Forces and the
commercial side of depends on the package, the maintenance and training of UAE
pilots”.
Theodore Karasik, Director, Research and Development at Institute for Near
East and Gulf Military Analysis (INEGMA), told Gulf News that the latest version
of Typhoon that the UAE intends to purchase is governed by some tactical and
technical capabilities of the fighter. “The UAE seeks tactical and technical
modifications to guarantee a potential delivery of the pure fifth generation of
the fighter jets,” said Karasik. “This means installing certain equipment
including software and sensors to make the aircraft into a Network Centric
Environment,” he explained.

Parker added that Saudi Arabia has already signed a contract with the company
to purchase 72 Typhoon aircraft and Oman which signed a deal to purchase 12
aircraft. “Saudi Arabia had signed a deal with the company to buy 72 Typhoon
fighters. We have already delivered 24 and the remaining 48 will be delivered in
48 months to replace the Tornado fighters. Oman has signed a deal with us last
year to purchase 12 fighters that will be handed over in 2017,” said Parker. “We
are in talks now with Malaysia. Kuwait has also approached us and we are in
serious negotiations with them,” said Parker.

Wing Commander Gregory Foxy of the UK Royal Air Force told Gulf News that
Typhoon fighter is an extremely versatile aircraft . “It is a single seat,
twin-engine fighter with optimal performance in Beyond Visual Range (BVR) and
close combat, with significant ground attack capabilities,” said Foxy.

The inherent flexibility of Typhoon means that an extended role to encompass
air-to-surface capability can also be achieved without affecting Typhoon’s air
superiority capability.

The Eurofighter Typhoon, developed by BAE with European firms EADS and
Alenia, was designed to be the world’s most advanced swing-role combat aircraft,
said Foxy. “The Eurofighter concept has been conceived as a
multi-role/swing-role platform that would meet the exacting operational demands
of the air forces of Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom,” said
Foxy.

He added that the degree of the air-to-surface component varies in content
and priority between the nations.

Foxy explained that the priority is given to the air-to-air role. For this
reason, the air superiority performance requirements drove the aerodynamic
design of the airframe.

In reply to a question on the difference between the French Rafale and
Typhoon, he said there are many technicalities. “The new Typhoon helmet
incorporates the sub-system elements needed to display a real world overlaid
picture on the helmet visor,” said Foxy.

“This is called “Helmet Mounted Symbology System” which is a highly
sophisticated helmet and support system that lets the pilot see through the body
of the aircraft, giving him a vital advantage when it comes to split-second
decision-making,” he added. “Using the new helmet system, the pilot can now look
at multiple targets, lock on to them, and then, by voice-command, prioritise
them. It’s a lightning-fast system to let the pilot look, lock on, and fire,”
said Foxy.

In addition, Typhoon can fly up to 55,000 feet and can reduce opportunities
to be monitored by radars.

BAE checks Harpoon fit for anti-ship Typhoon

BAE Systems has conducted first windtunnel tests to assess the suitability of integrating Boeing's AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missile with the Eurofighter Typhoon.
An image released by the UK company showing a model of the Typhoon reveals the combat aircraft carrying three of the air-launched weapons. In this configuration, one would be carried on the aircraft's centre-fuselage stores station - ordinarily reserved for an external fuel tank - and two more beneath its wing.

BAE Systems
BAE says the test activity is intended to assess the aerodynamic characteristics of carrying the Harpoon. "This testing will help to de-risk the clearance process for such weapons to be integrated onto the Typhoon," it adds.
The availability of an air-launched anti-ship weapon with the Typhoon could be of interest to potential customers, such as Malaysia, and to prospective buyers in the Middle East.

Next Eurofighter boss to target global partnerships

Alberto Jose Gutierrez Moreno has been named as the new chief executive of the Eurofighter consortium, with the current Airbus Military executive to succeed Enzo Casolini in the post as of 1 June 2013.

"My key priorities will focus on competitiveness, campaigns and capabilities in order to make Eurofighter Typhoon even more successful in the world market," Gutierrez says. "Starting from a European partnership, we need to move forward into a more global partnership and invite new customer nations to join this leading edge programme."

Gutierrez has been Airbus Military's head of operations since July 2007, with responsibilities for programmes including the A400M tactical transport, A330 multirole tanker transport, CN235 and C295 medium transports and Lockheed P-3 upgrades. His previous appointments have included being Eurofighter production director in Spain between 2000 and 2004.

Casolini took the helm at Eurofighter in May 2009, and has steered the consortium through one of its toughest periods, as defence budgets in partner nations Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK have contracted, threatening to cap production short of a contractually agreed combined 620 aircraft. Highlights of his tenure have included signing for the Tranche 3A production of 112 Eurofighters, advancing the development of an active electronically scanned array radar for the type, and also closing a deal to sell 12 Typhoons to Oman, with the latter completed via the UK.

Austria and Saudi Arabia have also previously signed deals for a combined 87 Eurofighters, 39 of which have been delivered so far. "I am confident that we will win more customers in the next few years," Gutierrez says. Current sales targets include Malaysia's 18-aircraft multirole combat aircraft requirement.

The Eurofighter partners also have appointed Alenia Aermacchi's senior vice-president of military aircraft, Maurizio De Mitri, as the new chairman of its supervisory board, also with effect from 1 June. De Mitri will succeed Cassidian's Berndt Wünsche in holding the position.

AESA radar clears trial fit with Eurofighter

One of the key future enhancements for the [url=http://www.flightglobal.com/landingpage/Eurofighter Typhoon.html]Eurofighter[/url] combat aircraft has moved a step closer to becoming reality, after BAE Systems performed a trial installation of an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar with a test example of the aircraft.
"Working in partnership with the Euroradar consortium, test aircraft IPA5 is undergoing a modification and upgrade programme in order to support the E-scan development programme," says BAE, which has released a first image of the combination in work at its Warton site in Lancashire.

[th]EF2000 Typhoon - Page 18 GetAsset[/th]
BAE Systems

Describing the trial installation as "a major milestone", BAE says: "The first flight of the modified aircraft is expected to take place at the end of the year."
Tranche 3A production examples of the Eurofighter are being manufactured with the wiring and structural modifications required to accommodate the AESA radar, which has previously been designated as the Captor-E. Although no full integration and production contract has yet been signed, the sensor is also already being offered to potential future export customers for the Typhoon.

After an eventful four years at the helm of Europe's best-selling combat aircraft programme, outgoing Eurofighter chief executive Enzo Casolini tells Flight Daily News why, despite domestic budget pressures being felt in its four partner nations, the type has a bright future under his successor, Alberto Gutierrez

Eurofighter

Q: Your time in charge of the Eurofighter consortium includes contracts for Tranche 3A production and an export deal with Oman. What have been your personal highlights?

A: As a former officer with the Italian air force, I always had a special attention to customer satisfaction. I'm proud that we tried, and succeeded, to solve some of the issues with the customers, such as in-service support. I pushed hard for a user group, with the chairman of NETMA [NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency], and two years ago we had the first one, in Florence. For the first time you had real operators there - the people who fly the aircraft - speaking to each other and exchanging information. The second happened in late February in Saudi Arabia, because we don't only have four customers any more, now we have seven [core nations Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, plus export buyers Austria, Oman and Saudi Arabia]. Also, in terms of support, exchanging information among the users is fundamental. My highest satisfaction is that some pilots are in love with this aircraft. For me, this is the best judgment: from the customers who fly the aircraft.

Q: How important is the programme to industry and what are the prospects for Tranche 3B production?

A: Eurofighter is the biggest European defence programme, with more than 100,000 people employed in the four countries. A nation's money goes to a nation's industry, and while over time you might spend a bit more than if you had bought "off the shelf", you have created jobs, revenues and taxes in your country. The decision to split Tranche 3 in two parts was very smart, as it allowed us to make at least one contract [signed in July 2009], because of the problem with the defence budget in the nations, and postpone the other one. Later, the slowdown of the production programme will allow us to continue until the end of 2017 or the beginning of 2018 with our production lines, which meant we were ready to receive some export customers. The slowdown also allowed the nations to postpone the milestone gate by which they had to decide if they wished to go for Tranche 3B or not. Now this gate is at the end of this year or the beginning of next year. At the moment the situation is not easy, with elections in Germany in September. Italy has expressed that it doesn't want to go for Tranche 3B, and the same applies for Spain. The UK government in particular is pushing for exports, and some of the export achievements could replace the Tranche 3B numbers, and allow us to continue the programme and the production lines, beyond 2018, and 2020 probably.

Q: Where do your best opportunities lie for further international sales?

A: In the Gulf area we have a lot of opportunities: not only a possible second batch with Saudi Arabia but also the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait. This is really a place where opportunities are very important, and it depends on the attitude of our governments to support this kind of activity. The visit by UK prime minister David Cameron to the Eurofighter pavilion at the Farnborough show last summer was appreciated very much. It showed a willingness to support the aircraft and exports. The UAE prospect started in October 2010, and I'm very optimistic. They want to have the best in the world, and very good technology transfer and industrial participation. We are working on that with BAE Systems, and it would be fantastic if we could say something more around the time of the Dubai air show in November. We, the Eurofighter community, are in a very good shape, but the work is not finished.

Q: With India yet to sign a production deal for the Dassault Rafale, does Eurofighter still have a chance of selling the Typhoon to New Delhi?

A: The situation is unclear. Until today, the Indian government has said: "Dassault is the one that we want to talk to." However, we are ready, we are standing by, and we wait for the Indian government to decide.

Q: How important are new capabilities such as adding an active electronically scanned array radar?

A: We are trying to include this kind of advanced capability in the shortest time possible; customers want this as soon as possible, not in 15 years. It's a fundamental enhancement for the future role of Eurofighter. We received a request for quotations from NETMA and the nations last August for the E-Scan, responded to by the end of November, and made an appendix for some other requirements in January this year. There is an offer on the table, which the nations are reviewing. We have to wait, but in the meantime we are proceeding with our development programme with our partner Euroradar. At the beginning of 2014 there will be the first flight of the [AESA] equipment on a Eurofighter, so we are working very hard. The timescale is essential for the export market. At the moment, all four nations are going in the same direction for the first steps. Longer-term, with some small money thrust, vectoring could also be carried out - then Eurofighter would be an unbeatable aircraft. We have already had an initiative called "improving process and performance". This is mainly related to how to reduce the time to make certification and qualification on what you do as modifications to the aircraft. This is fundamental to reducing time and cost, and an aspect we have to perform in the quickest way.

Q: What chance is there for European manufacturers to win orders in F-35 partner nations such as the Netherlands?

A: The [Lockheed Martin] F-35 is a politically-driven solution from the USA, and decisions have been made. But the F-35 has demonstrated, like all the big fighter programmes, that a sophisticated programme is not so easy to develop and succeed. Maybe in 10 years it will be okay, but at the moment it is in the middle of this. For a customer, if you make a fair competition then I will come and I will do it, but if not I will not spend any money to send my people. The Netherlands has a lot of MoUs [memoranda of understanding] already signed, and I do not believe they will leave the [F-35] programme. But my successor and my shareholders will decide what to do.

Q: What lessons have you been able to share with your successor?

A: The four-nation team is working very well, and also with our main interface, NETMA, which is relocating to the same Hallbergmoos site in Munich next year. This will be a big advantage. It's a fantastic opportunity for my successor [Alberto Gutierrez] to have Paris right away, because it is a great chance for him to meet a lot of stakeholders in the Eurofighter programme. I will be there just to support him on this introduction, then I will go back to Italy for a couple of months, and we will see what I do next. I have some ideas. It was a nice time, and a good experience with the people.

New Eurofighter chief executive Alberto Gutierrez will make his first public presentation at the show on 19 June

Typhoon gets weapons upgrade

18 June 2013

European defence ministers have agreed to upgrade the missile system on the Eurofighter aircraft.

A new deal signed at the Paris Air Show by ministers from the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain will see the RAF's Typhoon jets armed with Meteor missiles.

The beyond visual range air to air missile is expected to be used alongside existing weapons systems and give pilots more choice.

"This is a further exciting step in the planned upgrade programme for this impressive aircraft," said defence minister Philip Dunne.

"The entire programme is a powerful example of European government and industry collaboration in both missile technology and combat air weapon system development.

"Meteor will provide the RAF with a world-leading air-to-air weapons capability and improve prospects for export of the Meteor missile and the Typhoon weapon system."

The UK MoD expects to spend another £18bn on the Typhoon and Joint Strike Fighter aircraft over the next 10

Demonstrating further enhancement of Typhoon's air to surface role

Whilst working closely with Raytheon UK, we have completed a series of trials culminating in a successful release of Raytheon's Paveway IV precision guided bomb from a Typhoon, demonstrating further enhancement of Typhoon's air to surface role.

The trials demonstrated the latest Phase 1 Enhancements to the aircraft that enables the full capability of the Paveway IV to be utilised on Typhoon for the UK customer. Typhoon is capable of operating with up to 6 Paveway IV weapons.

The Phase 1 Enhancement programme includes the integration of new weapons including Paveway IV and EGBU-16 alongside integrating a Laser Designator Pod (LDP) onto Tranche 2 aircraft of the partner nations. It will further strengthen the Eurofighter Typhoon's position as a multi-role fighter aircraft.

Raytheon's Paveway IV is a highly accurate, precision guided bomb capable of significantly minimising collateral damage. It will provide Typhoon pilots with the very best technology for operations with its all-weather, day and night precision capability.

First Tranche 3 Typhoon is on the move
Tranche 3 Typhoon

The first Tranche 3 Typhoon, BS116, has been transferred from final assembly to the paint shop facility where it spent two weeks getting a makeover - check out the video and learn more about the painting process.

Next pit stop

The Tranche 3 jet will progress to the hush house, our sound-proofed engine testing facility, for a series of engine ground runs in the next few weeks. First test flights are expected to take place in September/October 2013.

Tranche 3 capability includes over 350 modified parts designed, engineered and assembled ready to incorporate the most advanced capability enhancements.

Capability enhancements

Enhancements include provision for conformal fuel tanks and extra electrical power and cooling to cater for an E-Scan radar which will enhance performance, reliability and availability whilst delivering lower support costs for Typhoon customers. Extra computing power and high speed data network systems will give the aircraft capacity for even more capability in the future.

About the Tranche 3A contract

Under the Tranche 3A contract signed in 2009, a total of 112 aircraft have been ordered for the four European partner nations of Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, with 40 aircraft bound for the Royal Air Force.
