First AH-64D Apache Block III delivered
MESA, Ariz., Nov. 2, 2011 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] celebrated delivery of the first AH-64D Apache Block III multi-role attack helicopter to the U.S. Army today in Mesa. The Block III Apache begins a new era in combat aviation by delivering advanced technologies and capabilities to benefit soldiers and battlefield commanders.
"This is a remarkable achievement by a great Army-industry team, a giant leap for U.S. Army aviation, and a signal to aggressors around the world that the Apache continues its legacy as a formidable and highly effective weapon system," said Col. Shane Openshaw, U.S. Army Apache project manager. "I am proud to witness this program milestone achievement and honored to be part of the team that designs and builds the Apache attack helicopter. I know the value this aircraft brings to soldiers on the ground and in the air who defend freedom daily in combat zones and during peacekeeping missions around the globe."
Boeing will produce 51 AH-64D Apache Block III helicopters for the Army under Low Rate Initial Production. The Army's acquisition objective stands at 690 Apache Block III aircraft. In addition, a growing number of defense forces worldwide have contracted for, or are considering, upgrading to or adding the Apache Block III to their rotorcraft fleets.
The Apache Block III incorporates 26 new technologies designed to enhance the aircraft's capabilities. The improved drive system features a new split-torque face gear transmission that increases power capability to 3,400 shaft horsepower. The new composite main rotor blade accommodates that power increase, resulting in improved aircraft performance with increased payload. Integrating the T700-GE-701D engine with the enhanced digital electronic control unit and other drive system technologies results in an increase in hover ceiling altitude at greater gross weight on a 95 degrees Fahrenheit day.
"The Apache team worldwide has done a remarkable job of producing a phenomenal helicopter and delivering it to the Army customer on cost and ahead of schedule," said David Koopersmith, Boeing vice president of Attack Helicopter Programs. “We pledge to continue our efforts to ensure that our customers have enduring capabilities today and tomorrow." boeing.mediaroom.com.

Boeing Submits Multiyear Contract Proposal to US Army for CH-47F Chinook Production
2nd multiyear helicopter contract will generate hundreds of millions of dollars in savings for government and taxpayers
RIDLEY TOWNSHIP, Pa., Nov. 4, 2011 — The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] has submitted a proposal to the U.S. Army for a multiyear contract for the production and delivery of 155 CH-47F helicopters.
“This second multiyear contract proposal will provide not only the vertical lift capability that warfighters use and need every day, but also will generate hundreds of millions of dollars in savings for taxpayers and the U.S. government,” said Leanne Caret, Boeing vice president, H-47 Programs. “With this contract Boeing, and its partners in more than 45 states, will be able to negotiate longer-term agreements with suppliers, make necessary investments in production tooling and processes, and more effectively plan for capital expenditures.”
The H-47 program is halfway through its first multiyear contract, awarded in August 2008, for 191 CH-47F Chinook aircraft and originally valued at $4.3 billion. This second five-year, firm fixed-price proposal would provide the Army with close to the full complement of 464 Chinooks outlined in the Department of Defense program of record for the CH-47F helicopter. The new contract will yield double-digit percentage savings over a single-year procurement strategy.
Since completing the first CH-47F production aircraft in August 2006, Boeing has trained and equipped eight U.S. Army units and is in the process of equipping the ninth. Six units have completed deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, where the helicopter has logged nearly 70,000 flight hours and maintained an operational readiness rate of over 85 percent conducting air assault, transport, medical evacuations and support operations. aviationnews

Lockheed Martin Delivers M-TADS/PNVS Modernized Laser Rangefinder for the U.S. Army’s Apache Helicopter
ORLANDO, Fla., December 7th, 2011 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE:LMT] delivered the first Modernized Day Sensor Assembly (M-DSA) upgrade prototype units to the U.S. Army for use on the Apache attack helicopter.
Five System Design and Development (SDD) Laser Rangefinder Designators (LRFDs) were recently delivered to the Army under a three-year contract awarded to Lockheed Martin in September 2008 to modernize the Apache’s Day Sensor Assembly.
The LRFD is the chief targeting aid for the Apache, establishing the range to the target for accurate weapon aiming. For the HELLFIRE II missile, the LRFD designates the aim point with a laser spot. Additionally, the M-DSA LRFD adds an eye-safe laser for safe training exercises.
“Delivery of these five SDD lasers proves the wisdom of our approach to modernizing the rest of the TADS/PNVS,” said Dr. Wayne Hudry, U.S. Army Apache Sensors deputy product manager. “As the first critical component of the upgrades coming for the M-DSA, the LRFD provides an improved tactical laser that supports future weapons, as well as an eye-safe laser that provides soldiers the capability to train like they fight.”
The first phase of the upgrades is being performed to mitigate obsolescence and enhance the system’s performance, as well as to increase the Modernized Target Acquisition Designation Sight/Pilot Night Vision Sensor (M-TADS/PNVS) system’s ability to fully accommodate future weapons.
A second phase includes upgrades to the visible color sensor, laser spot tracker, inertial measurement unit and day sensor structure assembly and adds a laser pointer/marker compatibility. This effort recently completed a successful critical design review in its SDD contract.
“This delivery is a critical step in the Army’s initiative to put more capable and maintainable targeting systems in the hands of Apache aircrews,” said Matt Hoffman, program director of M-TADS/PNVS in Lockheed Martin’s Missiles and Fire Control business. “The fully modernized M-TADS/PNVS will significantly enhance situational awareness for the Apache crews, and be a decisive factor in the successful execution of their missions.”
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 126,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation’s 2010 sales from continuing operations were $45.8 billion.

- U.S. Army Awards Northrop Grumman MQ-5B Hunter Contractor Logistics Support Contract Modifications
11:05 GMT, December 12, 2011 HERNDON, Va. | The U.S. Army has awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation two contractor logistics support contract modifications totaling $91.2 million for the MQ-5B Hunter program.
The cost-plus-fixed-fee interoperability engineering change proposal and the tactical common data link (TCDL) RESET programs both have a period of performance of 12 months.
For the TCDL RESET, Northrop Grumman will reset the current C-Band Hunter MQ-5B systems with TCDL technology to include resetting Hunter air vehicles, ground stations and data terminals with TCDL technology. Additionally, the TCDL also serves as a foundation of establishing interoperability among different U.S. Department of Defense air vehicles and ground stations. Such innovation also allows for manned aircraft to use unmanned aircraft, their sensors and weapons as an extension of their own capabilities keeping aviators out of harm's way.
"With additional Hunters fielded with TCDL, our nation's warfighters are further equipped with greater bandwidth and encryption, safeguarding vital information," said Kevin Goates, director, Northrop Grumman Technical Services' Unmanned Systems Sustainment Center.
The MQ-5B Hunter, which is currently deployed supporting contingency operations in Southwest Asia, is providing the U.S. Army with state-of-the-art intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and communications relay.
"The Hunter was critical to development of numerous advanced manned and unmanned teaming concepts while attached to combat aviation brigades in support of operations in Iraq," said Goates. "Most importantly, it saved, and will continue to save, the lives of countless soldiers and civilians as it plays a vital role in overcoming the threat of improvised explosive devices."
The MQ-5B Hunter provides warfighters with state-of-the-art intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, communications relay, and signal intelligence. Hunter has accumulated more than 100,000 flight hours, approximately 80 percent of which are combat related.

U.S. Army Pilots train on new AH-64D Apache helicopter
Published January 3, 2012 | By Rob Vogelaar
FORT RILEY, Kan. — A new helicopter is coming to the Block. The 1st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, is the first unit in the Army to have their entire fleet of Apache helicopters replaced with the comprehensively upgraded Apache (AH-64D) Block III beginning in February.
“There are new components to the aircraft — new head tracker, a new helmet and new flight pages,” said Lt. Col. Edward Vedder, 1st Attack Reconnaissance Bn., commander. “It takes some getting used to.”
The Apache Block III incorporates 26 new technologies designed to enhance the aircraft’s capabilities including an updated communication system, engines, transmission and drive shaft. The composite rotor blades have also been reworked to make them more efficient and produce more lift.
“It doesn’t take additional skills to fly it, but the aircraft is significantly different,” said Vedder.
Because of these differences the 1-1 pilots are going back to school and receiving three weeks of training at Boeing’s facility in Mesa, Ariz., where the aircraft is manufactured. The pilots get 28 hours of academics, 24 hours in the new simulator and 8.5 hours flying in the Block III helicopter. Maintenance test pilots get an additional 22 hours of academics and three additional hours in the aircraft.
“The training is packed into a busy three-week schedule,” said Shawn Hopan, the training lead for Boeing’s Apache program manager’s office. “We only train currently qualified Apache pilots.”
Even for the experienced pilots like Vedder, who has flown Apaches since 1995, the new Block III took some getting used to.
“A Block II, it has a certain level of power when you pick it up. This is totally different,” explained Vedder, who has flown in all three predecessors, including the AH-64A and the AH-64D Longbow — Block I and block II, to the Block III. “When you pick this aircraft up you are going to immediately feel the power difference and when you go into forward flight it wants to go about 150 MPH.
“It has a lot of power and is by far the most powerful and most impressive of them all,” he said.
While at the Mesa facility the pilots not only became qualified on the new Apache, but also got to meet the Boeing people who designed and are building the aircraft.
“It is an excellent opportunity to come out here and learn and see everything, (to) get to see the other side where the aircraft came from,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Shawn Witt. “You get to see the people behind the scenes, who put in a lot of time and energy so that we can have this piece of equipment in order to do our job.”
The new Apache has a couple added features which will allow Witt and other Apache pilots to do their job in inclement weather. The helicopters now have the capability to fly in weather conditions that previously would have grounded them.
“In the past if we had to get somewhere we had to wait for the weather to clear. Now we have capability, much like the Black Hawks and Chinooks, to launch aircraft and fly in the clouds,” Vedder said. “The Block III has an instrument package that rivals a 747. It is fantastic and very intuitive to fly.”
But the new Apache has the ability to do something the 747 cannot.
“The Block III is able to communicate with unmanned aircraft, the pilots are able to see the UAV’s video,” Hopan said. “To my knowledge no other aircraft has this capability.”
“Teaming up with the UAV is essentially another aircraft out there working with us to give us a better angle, better picture of what is happening,” said Witt. “This makes for a better situation for the war fighters on the ground because we have more information.”
But seeing what the UAV sees is not the extent of this new capability. With a couple taps on their computers the Apache pilots can take control of the UAV, eliminating the time needed to tell the UAV operator where the pilots need the UAV to “look.”
“It’s an extra workload for us, but it is very workable and manageable,” said Witt. “It is a really good system that they have worked out here for us.”
Vedder and Witt were two of the first 10 Apache pilots who went through Boeing’s class on the Block III. Five were from 1-1, while the others were from Fort Rucker, Ala.
The “Gunfighters” have 70 Apache pilot slots and there are an additional 15 Apache pilot slots in the CAB. They all need the training before they can start flying the new aircraft.
Seventy-five of these pilots will get their training at the Mesa facility, while the rest will be trained at Fort Riley by a mobile training team later in 2012. This training schedule will ensure that all Apache pilots in the brigade are trained on the Block III before their next deployment.
“The Block III gives us the ability to get where we are needed very fast, much faster than we ever have before. And, with the integration of the UAV sensor we can be more informed when we show up to provide lethal effects in support of the ground forces,” said Vedder.” It is really going to change the game for attack aviation.”

- The United States is planning to drastically reduce the number of soldiers that it keeps based in Europe. The move, to be announced tomorrow by Defence Secretary Leon Panetta, is part of a massive cost-cutting review. The number of brigade combat teams, each consisting of between 3,000 and 4,000 troops, will be slashed from three to two. The soldiers going home are likely to be from one of the two infantry brigades in Germany. The decision continues a U.S. drawdown from the continent that has seen a force of 300,000 during the Cold War fall to fewer than 80,000 today...

EADS North America awarded $212 million production contract for 39 UH-72A Lakota helicopters
Herndon, Virginia and Huntsville, Alabama, 10 January 2012
Lakota program remains on budget and schedule as it enters its seventh program year
The U.S. Army has awarded EADS North America a $212.7 million contract to deliver 39 UH-72A Lakota Light Utility Helicopters (LUH) as part of its total acquisition plan. Thirty-two of these Lakotas will be produced in the Army’s Security and Support (S&S) Battalion configuration. EADS North America has already delivered 198 UH-72A Lakotas to the U.S. Army, on time and within budget, along with five H-72A versions to the U.S. Navy for test pilot training.
“We’re extremely proud of our track record of on time and on budget deliveries of the UH-72A Lakota to the U.S. Army, Navy and Army National Guard,” said Sean O’Keefe, EADS North America CEO. “The successful execution of this critical program is a result of the strong partnership we’ve built with the Department of Defense over the past seven years. The S&S Battalion-equipped Lakotas further demonstrate this modern platform’s flexibility for growth to support an even broader range of demanding missions.”
The Lakotas equipped with the S&S Battalion Mission Equipment Package (MEP) will be operated by Army National Guard units across the country. The S&S Battalion MEP, integrated by American Eurocopter, will expand the capabilities of the Army’s UH-72A Lakota Light Utility Helicopters, and reflects the platform’s adaptability for an increasing number of missions. The current total program of record calls for 345 UH-72A Lakotas to be delivered to the Army and Army National Guard through 2015, along with five already delivered to the U.S. Navy.
Lakota helicopters in the S&S Battalion configuration enable Army National Guard units to seamlessly support state and local law enforcement and federal homeland security agencies in responding to natural disasters, law enforcement and border security operations.
The UH-72A Lakota is manufactured at EADS North America’s American Eurocopter facility in Columbus, Miss. The S&S Battalion MEP was integrated and tested at American Eurocopter’s Grand Prairie, Texas facility.
The S&S MEP contains a centerline electro-optical infrared (EO/IR) sensor, a 30 million candle power search light, analog/digital video downlink, rear observer’s console with a 15-inch display, an enhanced tactical communications suite, an onboard digital video recorder, 10.4-inch auxiliary displays for the pilot and co-pilot, and a video management system.
The UH-72A is a Defense Acquisition Category (ACAT) I major defense acquisition program for the U.S. Defense Department, and it marked one of the most rapid introductions of a new aircraft in the U.S. Army’s history. Deliveries of the aircraft to National Guard units allow aging OH-58 and UH-1 rotary-wing aircraft to be retired, while UH-72As assigned to the active component of the U.S. Army replace UH-60 Black Hawks.

Boeing Awarded US Army Contract for 14 Additional CH-47F Chinook Helicopters
RIDLEY TOWNSHIP, Pa., Jan. 11, 2012 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] has received a U.S. Army contract valued at approximately $370 million for 14 CH-47F Chinook helicopters to support Foreign Military Sales efforts. The aircraft will be delivered to the U.S. Army beginning in 2014; all but one are intended for Australia and the United Arab Emirates.
“This new aircraft sale brings our Chinook backlog to more than 200 aircraft for both domestic and international customers worldwide,” said Leanne Caret, H-47 Programs vice president. “Boeing’s recent $130 million investment to create a world-class Chinook manufacturing facility near Philadelphia means we are well positioned to respond to this demand.”
Seven of the new Chinooks will be delivered to the Australian Defence Force and six aircraft will be delivered to the United Arab Emirates under the terms of a previously announced Foreign Military Sales agreement between the U.S. government and the two countries. One additional aircraft is to be delivered to the U.S. Army to fulfill its own requirements.
“This sale is indicative of the tremendous interest from customers around the world who need best-in-class, multirole heavy-lift capabilities for military and humanitarian missions,” Caret added.
The H-47 program is at the midpoint of executing a multiyear contract for 191 CH-47F Chinook aircraft that was awarded in August 2008 and originally valued at $4.3 billion. In November, Boeing submitted a proposal to the U.S. government for a second multiyear contract for 155 Chinooks for the U.S. Army. This second five-year, firm fixed-price proposal would provide the Army with close to the full complement of 464 Chinooks outlined in the Department of Defense program of record and would yield double-digit percentage savings over a single-year procurement strategy. A decision is expected early next year.
Since completing the first CH-47F production aircraft in August 2006, Boeing has trained and equipped eight U.S. Army units and is in the process of equipping the ninth. Six units have completed deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, where the helicopter has logged nearly 70,000 flight hours and maintained an operational readiness rate of more than 85 percent conducting air assault, transport, medical evacuation and support operations.
There are more than 450 Chinooks in operation with military forces in 17 countries around the world. International operators include Japan, United Kingdom, Italy, Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Thailand, Taiwan, Greece, Korea and Spain.
