Background
The SDB was conceived during the 1990s to provide an internally carried weapon which would allow the F-22A Raptor, and later JSF, to attack multiple targets. The design is sized so that the F-22 can carry eight rounds in its main weapon bays.
The SDB was operationally deployed last year, and first dropped in combat during a close air support sortie in Iraq, on October 5th, 2006.
Development of the SDB followed the Miniature Munitions Demonstration Technology (MMTD) program during the 1990s.
The US Air Force intends to procure 24,000 or more rounds for carriage on new and legacy combat aircraft; of these half will be baseline weapons equipped for attacking fixed targets, and the remainder a variant equipped to attack moving targets.
Design aims for the SDB included a capability to penetrate hardened targets and provide better accuracy than the JDAM. The MMTD effort included a focus on key technologies including the Hard Target Smart Fuze, High Energy Explosives, Penetrator Design, Optimal Guidance, Robust Autopilot, Differential GPS/INS, and an Advanced Seeker. The Optimal Guidance is a unique feature, it is designed to align the bomb body exactly with the weapon's velocity vector at the point of impact, as this maximises penetration of the target - all of the bomb's kinetic energy is used to drive the weapon in - older guidance systems did not achieve this and velocity components tangential to the impact would at best waste energy, at worst contribute to premature casing rupture.
The production SDB is equipped with Rockwell Collins GPS receiver, with a Harris anti-jam module, and a Honeywell inertial unit, a KDI Precision Products reprogrammable electronic fuse (airburst, contact and delay modes), HR Textron tailfin actuators, MBDA diamondback foldout wings, with a TAM Garland 50 lb forged casing warhead. A Mil-Std-1760 interface is used. The launcher is a Sargent Fletcher pneumatic ejector system in the Boeing BRU-61/A bomb rack.
SRI are providing differential GPS ground stations, required to enhance SDB accuracy over JDAM and other conventional munitions.
The glide wings provide a quoted delivery range of around 60 nautical miles for a high altitude release. The weapon performs a 180 degree roll post launch as the stowed configuration has the folded wings beneath the weapon.
The cited blast radius is 26 ft (cf 82 ft with 2,000-lb JDAM). Boeing claim the ability to penetrate more than 5 ft of steel reinforced concrete making the SDB competitive against the BLU-109/B for many targets.
The SDB will be most effective in the urban and broader close air support, battlefield interdiction, Destruction of Enemy Air Defences (DEAD) lethal suppression and counter-air strike airfield attack roles. Against soft skinned vehicles and structures, armour, point emplacements, runways, aircraft shelters and SAM/SPAAG systems this weapon will be highly lethal.
Where the SDB will be less than effective is against deep / hardened bunkers, large infrastructure targets, large buildings, industrial plant, bridges, large trench systems, vehicle parks, infantry on the move and other area or large point targets. These remain the domain of larger specialised bunker busting weapons, or large explosive bombs such as the Mk.83/BLU-110 (1,000 lb), Mk.84/BLU-117/BLU-119 (2,000 lb), BLU-109/116/118 (2,000 lb), BLU-113/122 (5,000 lb).
The GBU-40/B / GBU-42/B Small Diameter Bomb II is in development, it will be equipped with a multimode terminal seeker and two way datalink, and is expected to enter production at the end of the decade.

si tu lis bien tu vas comprendre que les SDB sont PRINCIPALEMENT fait pour les avions furtifs '' F-22/F-35 '' car ils sont un espace réduits dans les soutes. |

| la SDB c'est la bombe de l'avenir, 8 fois moins lourd qu'une GBU31 avec le même pouvoir destructif! et jusqu'à 100 km de porté! nous devrions s'en équipé. comme ça un F-16 au lieu de porter 2 GBU31 il peut porter un nombre plus important de SDB (théoriquement 16 ). |

Boeing Small Diameter Bomb II Successfully Engages Target in Flight Test
ST. LOUIS, Oct. 12, 2009 -- The Boeing [NYSE: BA] GBU-40 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) II team successfully concluded a 42-month risk reduction program on Sept. 29 with a flight test in which the weapon impacted its target.
"Our design, development and testing have resulted in a highly capable, robust system that not only meets the needs of today's warfighters, but also has the capacity to adapt to the unknowns of tomorrow's threats and operational conditions," said Debra Rub, Weapons Programs vice president. "Bottom line, our weapon system has proven itself, and when this capability is available to the warfighter it will help transform the battlefield."
In the latest test, the Guided Test Vehicle (GTV), dropped from an F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., was equipped with form-factored (production-ready) components, including a Harris data link, Lockheed Martin tri-mode seeker, and modified SDB Increment I (GBU-39) assemblies. The weapon received in-flight target updates using a tactical radio communications system, which were processed by the seeker. Using the updates, the seeker successfully performed all objective functions, including search, detect, track and classify. The weapon fuze detonated upon impact with the intended target.
The weapon performed as planned and achieved all test goals. The team collected full telemetry data on the weapon's subsystems, providing confirmation of system performance and validation of the weapon's design and producibility.
"This successful test caps a stellar risk reduction phase for the program," said Dan Jaspering, director of Direct Attack Programs for Boeing. "It's exciting to have a proven, mature system as the U.S. Air Force moves toward awarding an Engineering and Manufacturing Development contract next year.
"Boeing's successful track record with SDB I and the risk reduction program for SDB II pave the way for a truly low-risk path through validation, operational testing and scheduled fielding," Jaspering added.
Previous flight tests were conducted in May and August 2007. Boeing also conducted an extensive captive-carry flight test program for the SDB II seeker, data link and guidance subsystems aboard its King Air test bed aircraft. The tests exercised weapon components and software under a variety of tactically relevant conditions. In June, the program completed a Boeing internal Critical Design Review with Air Force participation.
Boeing is teamed with Lockheed Martin in the SDB II program competition, and as the prime contractor will provide the air vehicle and system integration. Lockheed Martin will supply the sensor/seeker. Deagle |

TUCSON, Ariz., July 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company's (NYSE: RTN) GBU-53/B Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) program achieved a major milestone when it successfully engaged and hit a moving target during a flight test at the White Sands Missile Range, N.M. Currently in engineering and manufacturing development, SDB II is designed to engage moving targets in adverse weather and through battlefield obscurants.
During the July 17 test, the crew of a U.S. Air Force F-15E fighter staging out of Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., released the GBU-53/B, which then acquired, tracked and guided to a moving target using its tri-mode seeker, scoring a direct hit.
"SDB II is the first in the next generation of smart weapons that uses multi-mode seekers and fully networked enabled data links to engage moving targets in bad weather or battlefield obscurants in high threat environments," said Harry Schulte, vice president of Air Warfare Systems for Raytheon Missile Systems. "Raytheon is committed to this program's success because SDB II will give the warfighter a mission-flexible weapon capable of defeating threats such as swarming boats, mobile air defense systems or armored targets."
SDB II was validated by the Department of Defense's Joint Requirements Oversight Council as a weapon that fills a critical capability gap for the military. In addition to its adverse weather, moving-target capability, SDB II can hit targets from stand-off ranges. It has a powerful warhead capable of destroying armored targets, yet keeps collateral damage to a minimum through a small explosive footprint.
SDB II's capabilities include the ability for the weapon to be employed in three primary attack modes, each with a subset mode, for a total of six engagement modes. A dual band, two-way weapon data link for in-flight target updates and status reporting allows post-launch control of the weapon by the launching aircraft, a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC), or a third party.
"SDB II is designed and built from the ground up to deliver to the warfighter an affordable and efficiently produced weapon that brings new levels of capability yet remains easy to employ and maintain," said John O'Brien, Raytheon's SDB II program director.
About the Small Diameter Bomb II SDB II's integrated tri-mode seeker, which is built in Raytheon's automated tri-mode seeker factory, fuses millimeter-wave (MMW) radar, uncooled imaging infrared (IIR) and semiactive laser sensors on a single gimbal, which enables the weapon to seek and destroy targets, despite adverse weather conditions. Rockwell Collins supplies Raytheon with the data link, while General Dynamics-Ordnance and Tactical Systems provides the multi-effects warhead.
