Elbit Systems lands helmet-mounted display deal with South Korea
By Arie Egozi

Elbit Systems has received a contract to supply advanced helmet-mounted display systems for the South Korean army's Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) programme.

Under the deal, Elbit will supply prime contractor Korea Aerospace Industries with equipment for its ongoing development effort, which is expected to lead to the manufacture of up to 250 tactical transport helicopters. The Israeli company's initial contract covers those development aircraft due to be delivered in 2009-10, but it believes the agreement could lead to follow-on orders to equip the entire KUH fleet and additional military rotorcraft.

"We believe this selection will lead to further head-up display projects in South Korea and worldwide," says Yoram Shmuely, co-general manager of Elbit's Aerospace Division.

Elbit says its helmet-mounted display systems enable helicopter pilots to fly with their "head out of the cockpit", boosting situational awareness and safety by projecting essential flight data, plus navigation waypoints and threat data into their line of sight.

Hyundai Heavy Launches Korean Aegis Destroyer
Armée Sud Coréene/Republic of Korea Armed Forces ( RoKAF ) - Page 10 11032513

Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world’s biggest shipbuilder, on 24 March launched Korea’s third 7,600 ton class Aegis destroyer, the Ryu Sung-ryong.

The launch ceremony was attended by Minister of Defense Mr. Kim Kwan-jin, Chief of Naval Operations Mr. Kim Sung-chan, Hyundai Heavy Industries president & CEO Mr. Lee Jai-seong, and other officials from government and military authorities.

The Aegis destroyer was named after a scholar-official of Joseon Dynasty of Korea, Ryu Sung-ryong, who was in charge of military operations during the Imjin War, 1592-1598.

The destroyer, measuring 165.9m long, 21m wide and 49m deep, is equipped with an Aegis combat system. The system includes the SPY-1D radar, capable of detecting and tracking 1,000 targets and attacking 20 of those targets simultaneously. The destroyer also has a wide-ranging anti-ship, anti-aircraft, and anti-submarine defense system.

The Ryu Sung-ryong destroyer is due for final delivery to the Republic of Korea Navy by August 2012 after sea trials. As a cornerstone of Korea’s defense industry, Hyundai Heavy’s technology has been used for all Korean Aegis destroyers, two of which have been built in Ulsan

S. Korean Coast Guard to introduce 4 patrol planes from Indonesia

INCHEON, April 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Coast Guard said Friday that it will introduce four maritime patrol
planes from Indonesia's state aircraft manufacturer this year for the first time.

Seoul ordered four CN-235 aircraft for maritime patrol operations in December 2008 under a US$100 million contract, and the company, PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI), was to deliver two of the aircraft by the end of 2010 and the rest by April.

The Coast Guard said it will send its officials to Indonesia around next week to confirm the delivery schedule and ask the Indonesian side to pay a penalty for the delay.

The medium-range turboprop airplanes will be deployed for maritime patrol, illegal fishing crackdowns and airlifts, according to the Coast Guard.

South Korean maritime police have 18 aircraft, two fixed-wing airplanes and 16 helicopters.

S. Korea to complete building own missile defense system by 2015
SEOUL, April 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's military will complete building its own missile defense system by 2015 that is designed to intercept ballistic missiles from North Korea, the defense ministry said Tuesday, amid high tensions following the North's two deadly attacks last year.

South Korea, which has ruled out joining the U.S.-led global missile defense system, has gradually built the independent, low-tier missile defense shield since 2006 by acquiring Patriot missiles and long-range early warning radars.

The Korea Air and Missile Defense (KAMD) system is aimed at allowing the South's military to track and intercept incoming ballistic missiles and cruise missiles from North Korea.

"By 2015, the military will complete building the KAMD system to shoot down the enemy's ballistic missiles," the Defense Ministry said in a report sent to the National Assembly.

The move is a part of the military's mid-term plans to bolster its defense capabilities against North Korea's focus on unconventional or "asymmetric" warfare, the report said.

With the help of ship-to-air missile systems from Aegis-equipped destroyers and modified Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) interceptors, the KAMD system would enable the South's military to engage the North's low-flying, short and medium-range missiles, ministry officials said.

The South's military will also consider purchasing an aerial tanker to strengthen its air defense, it said.

North Korea has deployed hundreds of short-range Scud missiles with a range of up to 500 kilometers. The North succeeded in test-firing Rodong missiles with a range of 1,300 kilometers in the 1990s and also deployed them for operational purposes, according to the ministry.

In 2006, North Korea test-launched a long-range Taepodong-2 missile, but it exploded 40 seconds after launch. Another Taepodong-2 traveled some 3,200 km and landed in the Pacific in 2009.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain high after North Korea torpedoed a South Korean warship and shelled a southern border island last year that resulted in 50 people, including two civilians, being killed.

The defense ministry said last month that South Korea will deploy advanced spy drones and stealth fighter jets at an early date. South Korea had originally planned to introduce the unmanned spy drones by 2015.

Korea Likely to Buy Apache Helicopters

Armée Sud Coréene/Republic of Korea Armed Forces ( RoKAF ) - Page 10 2011041400977_0

The Army is poised to acquire a consignment of Apache helicopters. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration, in a report to the National Assembly's Defense Committee, said Wednesday it decided to buy large attack helicopters to replace the Army's superannuated 500MD and AH-1 attack choppers. It is to decide which model to buy and sign a contract by October next year.

Although DAPA did not specify the model or numbers, sources speculate that the likeliest decision is to buy 36 of the newest Apache Block III helicopters from the U.S., enough for two battalions. Each costs somewhere between W35 billion and W40 billion (US$1=W1,088), and the entire project is expected to cost W2 trillion in total.

The Army has tried to buy new Apache attack choppers since the 1990s, but budget problems and controversy over cost effectiveness put a spoke in the wheels.

But after the North's shelling of Yeonpyeong Island last year, the military discussed ways of dealing with North Korean special forces who might infiltrate on hovercraft, and experts pointed out that the Air Force's KA-1 light attack aircraft and AH-1 Cobra choppers alone would not be enough to drive them off.

They said that the time has gone when the South's small tank units alone had to stand up to the North's numerically superior forces and that the military now should seek to substitute air power, particularly new attack choppers. The North has about 4,100 tanks, compared to the South's 2,400.

The Army will likely find the budget for the purchase of new attack choppers by downscaling other ground weapons programs, including cutting the number of next-generation Black Panther tanks it is buying from 400 to 200.

Once armed with Apache choppers, the Army will be much more flexible in operations against the North's tanks and armored vehicles. The current Cobra choppers can be fitted with up to eight TOW missiles with a range of 4 km, but the Apache can carry up to 16 Hellfire missiles with a range of 10 km. It can also fly in all weathers, while the 500MD and Cobra are grounded at night and in cold weather.

Meanwhile, DAPA will review the Air Force's proposal for the long-delayed F-X next-generation fighter project in a session of the Defense Project Promotion Committee in June.

"We'll take into consideration stealth capabilities, cost, and possibility of assembling some aircraft in Korea to make a decision on the project," a spokesman said.

The Air Force is now eyeing Lockheed Martin's F-35, Boeing's F-15SE, and the upgraded Eurofighter Typhoon developed by the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company, with a view to completing the acquisition by 2016.

DAPA Commissioner Noh Dae-lae said the government could push for export of T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic advanced trainers and multirole fighters to the U.S. in a tit-for-tat deal if Korea buys stealth aircraft from the U.S.

Republic of Korea Air Force Receives First Lockheed Martin Sniper® Pods

ORLANDO, Fl, April 18th, 2011 -- The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) recently received Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] Sniper pods for their F-15K aircraft. Delivered to Daegu Air Base, South Korea, these pods will be immediately deployed into full flight operations with the ROKAF F-15K fleet.
“Sniper pods provide the ROKAF with updated targeting and non-traditional intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (NTISR) capabilities for the F-15K fleet,” said Marc Nazon, program manager for Fixed Wing Fire Control at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “We look forward to continued support and training to ensure that ROKAF pilots and maintainers have a full command of the Sniper pod’s capabilities.”
In 2009, Lockheed Martin demonstrated the benefits of Sniper pod’s capability for ROKAF by successfully flying Sniper on the F-15K and the KF-16 aircraft with a common Sniper pod software load. This capability allows operators to readily deploy the pod on various aircraft types, significantly reducing targeting pod life cycle costs.
Sniper pods are flying on U.S. Air Force and multinational F-16, F-15, B-1, F-18, Harrier, A-10 and B-52 aircraft. The Sniper pod identifies targets at long ranges and offers the capability to relay high-resolution streaming video using a video downlink to ground forces for NTISR and rapid target coordination.
With a 30-year legacy as the premier provider of electro-optical systems for fixed wing aircraft, Lockheed Martin has delivered more than 3,500 systems to domestic and 19 international customers.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 126,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation’s 2010 sales from continuing operations were $45.8 billion.

By Jung Sung-ki

Korea has developed a vertical launching system (VLS) to be installed on 3,000-ton heavy attack submarines to be deployed after 2018, according to a shipbuilding industry source, Monday.

Hyundai Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering are subcontractors for the heavy attack submarines.

It is the first time that the development of a submarine VLS in Korea has been confirmed. The Agency for Defense Development (ADD) has already developed one used aboard the 7,600-ton KDX-III Aegis destroyer.

A VLS is a modern type of missile-firing system used aboard submarines and surface vessels of several navies around the world. When installed on an attack submarine, a VLS allows a greater number and variety of weapons to be deployed in comparison to using only torpedo tubes.

Following the development of the VLS for subs, top shipbuilders in Korea and the ADD are also on track to develop an indigenous horizontal tube to launch torpedoes, cruise missiles and mines, the source said.

“The development of a vertical launching system has already been completed, while the development of a horizontal launching system is still under way,” the source told The Korea Times, asking not to be identified. “Developing the horizontal launching tube requires more sophisticated technology than the VLS development.”

The VLS would be used in launching long-range cruise missiles at key targets in North Korea.

The ADD has developed the 500-kilometer-range, ship-launched Cheonryong, which is a modified variant of the surface-to-surface Hyunmoo III-A ballistic missile. The missile range could be extended up to 1,000 kilometers, according to military sources.

The Cheonryong missiles are believed to have already been modified to be installed on Type-214 subs.

South Korea has successfully developed the Hyunmoo III-C surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a maximum range of 1,500 kilometers, following the deployment of the 1,000-kilometer-range Hyunmoo III-B.

With the VLS development, Korea would have an advantage in selling its submarines overseas in the future, the source added.

Currently, the South operates nine 1,200-ton, Type-209 submarines and three 1,800-ton, Type-214 submarines. They are all diesel- and electric-powered and were all built with technical cooperation from HDW of Germany.

As Germany restricts the transfer of key submarine technology, such as launching tubes, Korea would have difficulty exporting any of those locally-built submarines.

The Navy plans to deploy at least three more Type-214 submarines in the years to come.

Beginning in 2018, Seoul plans to build 3,000-ton KSS-III submarines fitted with domestically-built submarine combat systems aimed at automating target detection, tracking, threat assessment and weapons control.

The heavy attack sub will be armed with indigenous ship-to-ground cruise missiles and be capable of underwater operations for up to 50 days with an upgraded Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system.

S. Korea to invite bidders to buy precision missiles for F-15K fighters
SEOUL, May 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's arms procurement agency said Wednesday that it will open a bid next month to purchase radar-evading cruise missiles for its F-15K fighter jets.

South Korea's Air Force has sought for years to equip its F-15K fighters with precision cruise missiles capable of striking key nuclear facilities in North Korea in case of contingency.

Navy commissions 2nd high-tech Aegis destroyer

SEOUL, June 3 (Yonhap) -- The Navy has deployed its second high-tech Aegis destroyer, officials said Friday, to bolster defense against North Korea amid persisting tensions after last year's two military attacks.
The 7,600-ton KDX-III destroyer was put into service on Wednesday, after nine months of test operations, and assigned to the Navy's 7th fleet, Navy officials said.
The new destroyer was named after one of Korea's most prominent Confucian scholars, Yulgok Yi I (1536-1584).

The Yulgok Yi I Aegis destroyer (Yonhap file photo)
"The Yulgok Yi I will carry out its mission of anti-air and anti-ship defense in waters on three sides of the Korean Peninsula," a Navy official said.
South Korea has built three Aegis destroyers since 2004 under a Navy buildup project, code-named "KDX-III," to bolster defense against North Korea. The first ship was commissioned in 2008, and the third ship was launched early this year.
The 166-meter-long KDX III destroyer can carry about 120 missiles and torpedoes in its vertical launch system. With 300 crew members, it can also carry two mid-sized helicopters and sail at a top speed of 30 knots within a range of 1,000 kilometers, Navy officials said.
Inter-Korean tensions persist after North Korea sank the South's Cheonan warship near the Yellow Sea border in March last year, killing 46 sailors. Eight months later, the North bombarded the frontline South Korean island of Yeonpyeong, killing two marines and two civilians.

June 10, 2011 TA-50 supersonic trainer jets move toward a runway to take off on June 2 at an air base in Yecheon, North Gyeongsang. The Air Force unveiled the TA-50 trainer jets to the media for the first time.
The Air Force plans to deploy some 200 new aircraft that are designed to carry out a lead-in fighter training mission by the first half of next year.
Jointly developed by Korea Aerospace Industries, South Korea's sole aircraft maker, and U.S. defense giant Lockheed Martin, South Korea unveiled the T-50 "Golden Eagle" in 2005, making the country the world's 12th supersonic jet producer.
