Republic of Singapore Navy Conducts Successful Missile Firing

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) conducted a live-firing of the Barak anti-missile missile in the South China Sea earlier today as part of the 18th annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise which Singapore is conducting with the United States. The missile was fired by the upgraded RSN missile corvette RSS Victory against an air drone target simulating an attacking profile. The target was successfully destroyed.

Commanding Officer RSS Victory Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Eric Tan Wei Hong said that the exercise was professionally valuable to both the RSN and the United States Navy. "The CARAT exercise allows personnel from both navies to work and interact closely with each other and this has also deepened our friendship and mutual understanding", said LTC Tan. Commenting on the success of the missile firing, Weapon Systems (Control) Supervisor Military Expert 2 Jeyabal Sundaraju, who fired the Barak missile said, "the realism and tempo of the exercise has been a fruitful experience for me and my team onboard RSS Victory. Our training and preparation ensured that we were ready and we are glad that we have hit the target and achieved mission success."

The firing was witnessed by Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Ng Chee Peng. Similar missile firings have been conducted in previous CARAT exercises. The exercise is presently ongoing and will conclude on 27 Jul 2012.

Vente en vue de sous-marins à Singapour

La France pourrait vendre prochainement quatre sous-marins Scorpène à Singapour.

Selon nos propres informations, les négociations vont débuter pour préparer la vente de quatre sous-marins Scorpène à la marine de la République de Singapour. Le fabricant français DCNS entame actuellement les discussions avec le ministère de la Défense pour organiser cette vente. Laquelle pourrait comprendre également des transferts de technologie et des transferts de fabrication. Le tout est de savoir dans quelle mesure la France souhaite vendre des technologies à Singapour de capacités égales ou inférieures à celles de la marine française (rayon de détection des sonars, par exemple). Lesdites décisions d’exportations devront être validées en Commission Interministérielle pour l’Etude des Exportations de Matériels de Guerre (CIEEMG).

« Rien n’est encore sûr, nous sommes en concurrence avec les allemands », nous indique une source au fait du dossier. « C’est un [i]important contrat de deux milliards d’euros minimum, mais si cela se fait le contrat ne pourrait être même pas encore signé l’année prochaine »[/i]. Venegono Superiore (Varese), Italy 7 August 2012 – The first M-346 advanced trainer for the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) was rolled out in a ceremony held at Alenia Aermacchi’s plant in Venegono Superiore, Italy.

In September 2010, ST Aerospace, as the prime contractor, teaming with Alenia Aermacchi
(a Finmeccanica company) and The Boeing Company, was awarded a contract to supply 12 M-346 aircraft and ground based training system for the RSAF’s Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) programme.

The roll-out ceremony was attended by officials from the RSAF, key representatives from
ST Aerospace, The Boeing Company and Alenia Aermacchi, as well as staff representatives involved in the programme.

The rollout follows the obtaining of the type certificate and the first flight made by this aircraft in July 2012. The delivery of the first M-346 is scheduled for the end of 2012.

Background

The M-346 is the ideal platform for a latest-generation integrated training system. The versatility of the M-346 allows for its configuration as an affordable advanced combat aircraft. The innovative technical characteristics of the M-346 provide for a high degree of safety and low acquisition and operating costs. The M-346 has been designed using the latest “design-to-cost” and “design-to-maintain” concepts, with an avionics system modeled on those used in new-generation fighter aircraft, such as Eurofighter, Gripen, Rafale, F-22 and the F-35.

The M-346 received its Military Type Qualification Certificate from the Italian Ministry of Defence - National Armaments Directorate in June 2011, an essential requirement to certify the full correspondence to aircraft specifications and to international military requirements.

In September 2010, the Singapore Government signed the contract for 12 M-346 and ground-based training systems under the AJT replacement programme. This contract was signed with the consortium, formed by ST Aerospace (prime contractor), Alenia Aermacchi and Boeing. The first aircraft is scheduled for delivery this year. Alenia Aermacchi also finalised contracts in June 2011 with ST Aerospace to provide logistics support to the RSAF’s fleet of M-346.

SAF's 5 SIR soldiers participate in Exercise Wallaby

Infantry soldiers from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) have completed army training evaluation centre (ATEC) testing during Exercise Wallaby 2012, currently underway in Shoalwater Bay Training Area (SWBTA), Queensland, Australia.

A total of 700 troops from 5th Battalion Singapore Infantry Regiment (5 SIR) took part in the four day ATEC, which marked the motorised infantry battalions debut at Exercise Wallaby's 22nd event, an annual drill featuring the SAF's networked air-land capabilities.

During the exercise, soldiers used their new Terrex infantry carrier vehicle (ICV) to evaluate its mobility and system reliability, and also practised dismounted attacks, helicopter insertion and combat operations in a built-up area.

Exercise frame 1 commander and 3rd Singapore Infantry Brigade commander colonel Seet Uei Lim said ATEC would enhance the unit's overall operational readiness by validating troops' combat proficiency at individual and battalion levels.

"The vast training space allows the Terrex ICVs to manoeuvre long distances and conduct live-firing at the battalion level with various land and air platforms," Lim added. "This is something we're unable to do back home due to space limitation."

The battalion was scheduled to conclude training with an integrated live-firing drill, during which the Terrex ICV will be operated alongside other ground and air assets for the first time, such as Leopard 2SG main battle tanks (MBTs), Skyblade III mini-unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and AH-64D Apache attack helicopters.

Running from 22 September to 24 November, Exercise Wallaby is one of the biggest unilateral battalion training drills featuring more than 4,300 SAF personnel and 350 platforms
