SELEX Galileo awarded a contract for electro-optical naval Janus sensor by Italian Navy

SELEX Galileo, a Finmeccanica Company has been awarded a first contract by the Italian Navy, Marina Militare, for the supply of electro-optical naval Janus turrets, derived from the well known Janus sensor for land applications.

The naval Janus will equip Italian Navy’s patrol boats operating in the Mediterranean in illegal immigration control missions. Janus features outstanding day and night long-range detection, identification, and mission recording.

The contract also includes a simplified human-machine interface console with display and controls to remotely operate the multi-sensor turret.

“This contract is an important achievement, it underpins our positioning in the Naval sector where we are already successful with the SASS, an innovative naval IRST. Leveraging on the SASS and the land Janus, installed on the fully digitized Italian Army Freccia, Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle (AIFV), we are confident that the naval Janus will have great market opportunities in the near future” said Fabrizio Giulianini, Deputy CEO of SELEX Galileo.

SELEX Galileo was recently awarded contracts to supply surveillance electro-optical systems; fix (NEMO) and portable (LINX) for a North African country

Alenia Aeronautica starts the Sky-Y Unmanned Aerial System fourth flight campaign

16:10 GMT, June 18, 2010 Rome | The Sky-Y, Alenia Aeronautica’s UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) technological demonstrator, has successfully accomplished - at the Italian Air Force’s air base in Decimomannu, Sardinia - its first flight with a Flight Control System wholly developed by Alenia Aeronautica in collaboration with Alenia SIA (Alenia Aeronautica’s owned company).

During this test campaign Alenia Aeronautica will experiment the new E-FCS (Experimental-FCS), which is a prototype of a system including an avionic computer, several sensors (inertial, air data, GPS) and electrical actuators for the primary and secondary flight controls. The system complies with the recent aeronautical certification rules and with the most advanced technical and industrial directives for this kind of equipments, regarding both hardware and software. As a matter of fact, the control laws introducing the rationale for the remote and automated aircraft’s control have been developed entirely by Alenia Aeronautica.

The Sky-Y aircraft is at its fourth flight-test campaign and it is envisaged it will complete its testing programme by the end of July 2010, with 15 long-endurance flights. This is the first flight campaign taking place at the Decimomannu air base in Sardinia, thanks to the precious collaboration with the Ministry of Defence and the Italian Air Force.

Alenia Aeronautica reaches another important step in pursuing the wider project of the creation of a national industrial capability, able to develop autonomously in Italy the innovative unmanned systems and the related subsystems and technologies: the current frontier of the twenty-first century aeronautical products.

During this flight-test campaign Alenia Aeronautica will assess also the correct integration on the aircraft of systems developed by other Finmeccanica companies such as the EOST45, a high performance passive Electro-Optical Surveillance and Tracking system developed by SELEX Galileo, a new Wide-Band Data-Link developed by SELEX Communications, a powerful and reliable equipment for the satellite data-link of Telespazio, whose use has been granted to Alenia Aeronautica, within a cooperation agreement, by the Civil Protection Agency of the Piedmont Region.

The Sky-Y has been designed and built as a demonstrator of integration capabilities and innovative technologies developed by Alenia Aeronautica in the field of long endurance and autonomous Unmanned Aerial Systems, such as:

• systems for autonomous on-board control and for the Ground Control Station, reliable and certifiable for the use of an unmanned air vehicle and with the characteristics of a MALE - Medium Altitude Long Endurance

• low-consumption diesel propulsion, integration of surveillance sensors (capable of detecting and recognising also very small objects from long distances during day and night), high-capacity data-processing systems and the broad-band data-link (including satellite) to manage and distribute information to end-users on the ground.

Italy To Get New Amphibious Ships

The Italian navy has received the go-ahead to procure two 20,000-ton amphibious assault ships (LHDs), with the possibility of a third ship, configured with extensive aviation facilities (LHA).
The preliminary LHD project is funded and will take 12 months for completion. It will be followed by a project definition phase requiring eight months and leading to a contract. Delivery of the first ship comes within 30 months after that. If everything goes to plan, the first LHD arrives in late 2014.
LHDs will replace two 8,000-ton San Giorgio-class LPDs, commissioned in 1987 and 1988. The LHA will eventually replace the carrier Garibaldi, which is being dedicated to amphibious and helicopter roles now that the Cavour carrier is in service.
The new LHDs will be 190 meters (623 ft.) long, feature a well dock that holds four LCACs (landing craft air cushions), and have a hangar with dedicated maintenance area where six medium-heavy helicopters can be recovered. The flight deck will provide six landing spots and be served by two elevators, one at the stern, the other forward of the island. It will thus be possible to launch air-assault operations, lifting a reinforced rifle company with each wave and rapidly moving personnel and equipment to the deck. Helicopter capacity will be 12-15, depending on mix.
Capabilities also include four smaller LCVP (landing craft, vehicle, personnel) vessels and two motorboats, all in dedicated spaces with cranes under the port flight deck.
The LHD can accommodate 760 troops, including an aviation detachment and staff personnel, in addition to a ship’s crew of only 200, a result of shipboard automation. The vessel will normally carry a reinforced marine battalion and aviation personnel, and be able to add an amphibious task force and landing force command, which will rely on extensive C4I spaces and systems. The basic space earmarked for the command staff is 500 sq. meters (5,380 sq. ft.).
The ship has a large garage deck with a capacity of 360 tons. The vehicles reach the garage from the well dock or through a large starboard door. The garage floor and ramps can support a 60-ton tank. The roll-on/roll-off concept permits rapid loading and unloading of cargo and vehicles, which can also be parked on the flight deck.
The navy has not yet selected a propulsion system. The general specification calls for a top speed of 20 kt. and range of 7,000 nm. at 16 kt., which translates to 45 days’ endurance. Basic proposals are built around a combined diesel and diesel scheme, with four diesels, each 6,000 kw., driving a shaft and variable-pitch propeller. Engine power will be 20-24 megawatts. There will also be powerful bow thrusters. A diesel-electric or pod configuration is being considered. The pod is popular, but would limit the size of the well deck.
The LHDs will have a large electricity generating capability, with four diesel generators in the 2.5-megawatt class.
A peculiarity of the design is that the ships, at least the first, will have civil protection as the primary operational role. The requirement is taken seriously and dictates many capabilities—for instance, large electricity generation and water purification capacity, including deployment of flexible hoses for ship-to-dock or ship-to-ship water transfer.
The LHD will have a hospital that treats 54, with 1,000 sq. meters of dedicated space. The hospital can expand by using space dedicated to the marines’ mess and loading medical containers in part of the hangar. The C4 spaces can be used as a command center for civil protection authorities.
The navy has not entered into discussions about the sensor suite and combat system. The LHD will have an extensive combat management and command system, multirole search and navigation radar, and electronic warfare protection system including decoy launchers.
The ship will have several 25-mm. gun mounts and machine guns, and possibly one or more Oto Melara 76/62-mm. SR guns in the Strales configuration for missile defense.
To minimize costs, the LHDs will be built to commercial standards, modified somewhat to improve survivability, but without full military specifications. Tradeoffs between cost and survivability are being assessed. According to one estimate, the ship can be built for €300 million ($369 million), excluding combat systems.

Italy Cuts Eurofighter Typhoon Order
The Italian Government has significantly reduced the number of Eurofighter Typhoon jets it has on order due to tight financial conditions.
Italian Defence Minister Ignazio La Russa said at Farnborough Air Show in the UK that Rome has decided to cut its planned purchase of Typhoon jets by 25 planes due to budget pressures.
Italy will save $2.6bn by buying 96 of 121 of the multirole aircraft ordered earlier for the Italian Air Force, according to UPI.
Russa said that Italy's decision to reduce its order for Eurofighter will not affect the business of Finmeccanica, which is part of the consortium building the fighter jet.

C'était prévisible... Mais je ne pense pas que c'est pour des raisons budgétaires uniquement, je soupçonne un jeu de lobbying américain pour couler l'EF2000 après avoir coulé le Rafale... Les italiens seraient interessés par le JSF...

INDRA TO IMPLEMENT ITS ELECTRONIC DEFENCE SYSTEMS IN TWO U212 SUBMARINES OF THE ITALIAN NAVY

• The solution will allow the submarines to detect the activity of the most advanced radars

• Indra has already implemented this system in Germany's U212 submarines

August 12, 2010

Indra will implement its electronic defence systems in two new U212 submarines to be acquired by the Italian Navy after signing an agreement with Fincantieri - Cantieri Navali Italiani.

The system will allow this traditional submarine, which is one of the most noiseless and hard to detect, to notice any active radar within a certain range. The analysis capacity of the system enables detection of nearly 100% of the signals, not only the weakest but also those with low probability of detection.

The solution will also facilitate followup of the signal transmitter and identification. The analysis of the radio electric spectrum takes place in real time which offers an advantage for the submarine crew over other platforms.

This is possible thanks to the high information processing capacity of the system and its intelligence since it is capable of recognising the electronic finger print which distinguishes radar types. Besides this, it offers the possibility to record all the data for further analysis.

Another distinguishing feature of the solution is its high integration capacity with other systems, either command and control systems and communications or with other transmitters embarked on the U212.

Already into service for the German Navy

One of the key aspects which made this contract possible was the successful implementation of the system for the German Navy's U212. In addition to this, the solution meets NATO requirements for international missions. All this offers a significant advantage over competitors and has granted Indra this important international reference.

The company is also broadly experienced in the sector of electronic defence and is the supplier of this type of systems for the Spanish fleet. The system has been implemented in the new F100 frigates, the Strategic Projection ship or the future S80 submarines. Indra's equipment is also present in cutting edge platforms such as Eurofighter or the A400M, among others.

Indra is the premier Information Technology company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe and Latin America. It is ranked as the first European company in its sector according to investment in R&D and is the second Spanish company in absolute value investments in R&D. In 2009 revenues reached € 2,513 M of which a 40% came from the international market. The company employs more than 29,000 professionals and has clients in more than 100 countries.

Italy to Receive 767 Aircraft Refuelling Tankers
The Italian Air Force will receive two 767 aircraft refuelling tankers from Boeing by the end of 2010, after a delay of five years.
The delivery of an additional two tankers will be delayed, however, due to remaining work to improve capability, according to Reuters.
Boeing has resolved the problem with the planes' fuel-carrying wing pods that had caused the wings to flutter at high speeds.
The first two planes will include three operational air refuelling systems, the wing pods, a refuelling boom and a centreline hose drum unit, under a contract signed with Italy in 2002.

Italian Navy AW-101s Start Afghanistan Mission

ROME - Three Italian Navy AW-101 helicopters will arrive in Afghanistan by Oct. 13 to start a 12 month tour, the Navy said Oct. 11.

The helicopters, which are being flown to Afghanistan by a U.S. Air Force C-17, will be based with Italian forces in Herat and undertake surveillance, patrol, convoy support, deterrent and medevac missions, the Navy said in a statement.
Equipped with night-vision and self-protection systems, the helicopters will be accompanied by a 67-strong group of crew and maintenance staff.
Previously, the Italian Navy has deployed AB212 helicopters to Afghanistan to rotate with Air Force AB214s.
Separately in Afghanistan, an IED explosion on Oct 9 near Farah killed four Italian soldiers riding in an Italian Lince vehicle.
In response, Italian defense minister Ignazio La Russa said he would confer with the Italian parliament this week on whether to allow Italian aircraft in Afghanistan to carry bombs. Italian AMX fighters now flying in the country are only permitted to carry out surveillance missions.
