La Norvège réceptionne son premier P-8A « Poseidon » !



L'Agence norvégienne du matériel de défense (NDMA) a accepté aujourd'hui le premier des cinq avions de patrouille maritime Boeing P-8A « Poseidon » qui seront exploités par la Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF).

« La Norvège est responsable de vastes zones maritimes dans une partie du monde stratégiquement importante, et le nouveau P-8A Poséidon représentera une amélioration considérable de notre capacité à protéger notre souveraineté et à comprendre les développements dans ces zones. La livraison aujourd'hui de notre premier P-8A est une étape importante dans la modernisation de la capacité des avions de patrouille maritime de la Norvège », a déclaré Mette Sørfonden, directrice générale de l'Agence norvégienne du matériel de défense. "Je suis très heureux que la NDMA soit bientôt en mesure de fournir aux forces armées norvégiennes une toute nouvelle génération d'avions qui joueront un rôle important dans la préservation de notre sécurité nationale pendant de nombreuses années à venir."

Le premier avion P-8A de Norvège, nommé Vingtor, a été livré à la NDMA lors d'une cérémonie au Museum of Flight de Seattle, Washington. Cette étape survient quatre ans après que la NDMA a conclu un accord avec l'US Navy pour le P-8A, et deux ans avant que le nouvel avion ne commence à prendre en charge les missions de patrouille maritime dans le grand nord de la Norvège.

Les quatre avions restants de la Norvège sont tous à un stade avancé de production et seront livrés à la NDMA en 2022. Les cinq P-8A remplaceront la flotte actuelle de RNoAF de six P-3 Orion et deux DA-20 Jet Falcon et seront exploités par 333e Escadron à la base aérienne d'Evenes.

Les sociétés norvégiennes Nammo, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, Andoya Space et Berget ont actuellement des accords avec Boeing qui font partie d'un plan de coopération industrielle sur mesure lié à l'acquisition par la Norvège de cinq avions P-8A. Boeing continue de travailler avec la NDMA et l'industrie norvégienne pour étendre ce plan et soutenir la croissance économique dans toute la Norvège.

Le 142ème P-8

La livraison à la Norvège marque également le 142ème avion P-8 livré à des clients mondiaux, notamment l'US Navy, la Royal Australian Air Force, la marine indienne et la Royal Air Force du Royaume-Uni. Les premières livraisons en Nouvelle-Zélande, en Corée et en Allemagne auront lieu respectivement en 2022, 2023 et 2024.

À ce jour, la flotte mondiale de P-8 en exploitation a accumulé plus de 400’000 heures de vol sans incident. Le P-8 est un avion de guerre anti-sous-marine à longue portée, de guerre antisurface, de renseignement, de surveillance et de reconnaissance capable d'opérations à grande échelle, maritimes et littorales. En outre, le P-8 effectue des missions humanitaires et de recherche et sauvetage dans le monde entier.

Le Boeing P-8A « Poseidon »

Le P-8A « Poseidon » est un avion de longue portée de lutte anti-sous-marine (ASM) et antisurface (LAN), renseignement, surveillance et reconnaissance (RSR). Le P-8A est capable de longues patrouilles proche et loin des côtes.

Le P-8A « Poseidon » est conçu pour assurer l'avenir de la Marine à long rayon d'action dans les missions de patrouille maritime. Le P-8A offre une plus grande capacité de combat et demandera moins d'infrastructure tout en se concentrant sur la réactivité et l'interopérabilité avec les forces traditionnelles. L’avion pourra échanger ses informations avec l’ensemble des bâtiments de surface, sous-marins, avions et drones en service dans l’US Navy.

Pour Boeing, le choix de base d’une cellule de B737 NG permet une importante réduction des coûts, le constructeur estime cette base permettra de décliner d’autres versions du P-8A afin de remplacer plusieurs appareils actuellement en services et destinés à des opérations spéciales. Pour Boeing, il sera possible par exemple de remplacer les B707 et autres C-130 spécialisés dans les domaines de l’écoute électronique, commandement volant, guerre psychologique (PsyOps), brouillage. Cet avion équipé de liaisons 11 et 16 et de systèmes internet, doit agir dans un concept de guerre en réseau en collaboration avec des drones.

La Norvège annule son contrat de 14 hélicoptères européens NH90 et demande un remboursement

L’armée norvégienne espérait un temps de vol annuel de 3 900 heures, mais en réalité celui-ci plafonne à 700, selon le ministère. Les NH90 norvégiens étaient destinés à des missions de garde-côtes et de lutte sous-marine.

« Nous avons un hélicoptère qui ne fonctionne pas comme il le devrait », a déclaré le général Eirik Kristoffersen, qui dirige l’armée norvégienne. Excédée par des retards de livraison et des problèmes de disponibilité, la Norvège a annoncé, vendredi 10 juin, l’annulation d’un contrat de 14 hélicoptères de transport militaire NH90 avec le consortium industriel européen NH Industries (NHI), dont le siège est à Aix-en-Provence.

Malgré une commande passée il y a plus de vingt ans, Oslo a souligné n’avoir reçu que huit exemplaires pleinement opérationnels de l’aéronef construit par NHI détenu à 62,5 % par Airbus Helicopters, à 32 % par l’italien Leonardo et à 5,5 % par le néerlandais Fokker Aerostructures. Le gouvernement norvégien va rendre les 13 hélicoptères déjà livrés et réclame également le remboursement de 5 milliards de couronnes (environ 500 millions d’euros), a-t-il annoncé lors d’une conférence de presse.

« Malheureusement, nous sommes arrivés à la conclusion que, quel que soit le nombre d’heures travaillées par nos techniciens et le nombre de pièces de rechange commandées, cela ne rendra pas le NH90 capable de répondre aux besoins de l’armée norvégienne », a déclaré le ministre de la défense, Bjorn Arild Gram. Son ministère va commencer « rapidement » un processus pour identifier un modèle alternatif, a précisé le gouvernement dans un communiqué.

Problèmes de fiabilité

Cette annulation est un nouveau revers pour le NH90 après la retraite anticipée du modèle dans l’armée australienne, annoncée en décembre 2021, au profit de l’UH-60M Black Hawk de l’américain Sikorsky.

Outre les retards de livraison – la commande prévoyait au départ une livraison des 14 exemplaires en 2008 – l’armée norvégienne a dénoncé des problèmes de fiabilité, de maintenance et d’obsolescence des pièces.

For more than 50 years, Lockheed Martin has been proud to partner with the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF). The RNoAF has operated six Lockheed Martin aircraft types throughout its history, including four in operation today: the P-3 Orion, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the C-130J Super Hercules, and the F-35 Lightning II.

Norway is a key partner in the transatlantic security community and is a stronghold for NATO’s interests in the North. The nation was one of the first to sign on as a partner on the F-35 program, during the System Development and Demonstration (SDD) phase.

In 2008, the government of Norway selected the F-35 Lightning II as the replacement for their F-16 fleet. In 2012, Norway increased their program of record quantity by four aircraft and at the same time, accelerated deliveries to begin training pilots and maintainers two years earlier.

The Royal Norwegian Air Force operates F-35A variant aircraft that include a drag chute to assist with landing in icy and slick conditions and to reduce landing distance on short airfields.

Norway is an active and valued partner in the development, production and sustainment of the global F-35 fleet. Every F-35 contains components manufactured by Norwegian industry, with Norway providing key aircraft components including air-to-air pylons, rudder and vertical fin leading edges, carbon composite panels, and completed and coated horizontal and vertical tails. Since the program’s inception, 18 Norwegian companies have served as Tier 1 F-35 suppliers, with nine current and active Norwegian suppliers contributing to the program.

Swedish aerospace and defense company Saab announced that it has received an order from the Norwegian Armed Forces for deliveries of ammunition for the recoilless Carl-Gustaf rifle.


The order is signed within a 15-year framework agreement that allows the Norwegian Armed Forces to place orders for Carl-Gustaf ammunition and weapons. This includes the new programmable high explosive round HE 448, among other ammunition types. In January 2021, Norway became the 14th user of the latest Carl-Gustaf M4.


“We are pleased to continue to support the Norwegian Armed Forces with our Carl-Gustaf ammunition. These munitions will further strengthen Norwegian defense capability,“ says Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s business area Dynamics.
The programmable high explosive ammunition HE 448 gives the Carl-Gustaf operator the ability to quickly configure a chambered round. The wide range of ammunition available for Carl-Gustaf further strengthens the system’s tactical flexibility, enabling faster engagement, increased hit probability and greater effectiveness for soldiers.

Norway retires the Falcon 20ECM    


On 30 September 2022, the Luftforsvaret (RNoAF, Royal Norwegian Air Force) officially retired the two Falcon 20ECM (Electronic CounterMeasures) aircraft used by FEKS/717 skvradon after almost fifty years in service.

The two Falcons have reached more than 25,000 flight hours each, whilst flying missions all over the world. The Falcon is originally a French-built twin-engine medium-sized jet-powered business aircraft. Since 20 December 1972, Norway has used the Falcon for information gathering, electronic warfare and transport.

For a long period of time, the aircraft have engaged in self-training or support and training of their own units, air defence and operational collection missions. The new maritime surveillance and anti-submarine aircraft P-8A Poseidon and the multi-role combat aircraft F-35A Lightning II will take over several of the tasks of the two ECM Falcons.

The two aircraft, serial 041 Hugin and 053 Munin, were bought in December 1972 and were outfitted at Montreal (Canada) for ECM duties in 1975. The aircraft were first operated by 335 skvadron/B-Flight until early 1995, after which they were transferred to FEKS/717 skvadron at Oslo-Gardermoen. The unit will officially disband in 2024.

Originally, the Falcon 20 fleet consisted of three aircraft. In 2018, Falcon 20C-5 with serial 0125 was phased out. This Falcon had a history of VIP transport and calibration of military navigation and approach aids and radar systems. It is now stored at Rygge air base. Most probably, the two ECM Falcons will initially also be stored at Rygge. Maybe one of them will be preserved.

La Norvège a levé ce mercredi l’option pour trois radars Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission Compact (GM200 MM/C) supplémentaires, confirmant le succès de ce système produit par la filiale néerlandaise du groupe Thales.

Ces radars viennent s’ajouter aux cinq commandés en mai 2021 via un contrat signé entre l’agence norvégienne du matériel de défense (FMA) et son homologue néerlandaise, la DMO. Valorisée à 44 M€, cette seconde tranche porte l’investissement de la Norvège à près de 195 M€. Les huit radars seront livrés d’ici fin 2025.

« Ces radars sont importants pour pouvoir protéger nos propres forces. Ils ont une meilleure portée, mobilité, protection et précision que les radars utilisés aujourd’hui par les forces armées norvégiennes », déclarait Tomas Beck, responsables des capacités terrestres au sein de la FMA, dans un communiqué. Ils seront notamment opérés en coordination avec les 28 obusiers automoteurs K9 VIDAR commandés pour l’armée norvégienne.

Décliné en variantes « tout en un » (MM/A) et « compacte » (MM/C), le radar moyenne portée GM200 MM est l’un des derniers-nés de la famille de systèmes 4D AESA (antenne active à balayage électronique). Co-développée avec les forces armées néerlandaises, ce radar est déployable en moins de deux minutes dans sa version compacte. Il garantit une couverture à 360° et dans un rayon de 400 km contre les menaces évoluant à basse altitude et/ou à faible vitesse, dont les drones et les roquettes et obus d’artillerie et de mortier. 

Système « palettisé », le GM 200 MM/C est conçu pour la mobilité tactique et la relocalisation rapide. Un atout sur lequel la Norvège mise en choisissant de l’intégrer à son futur Armoured Combat Support Vehicle (ACSV), variante locale du chenillé PMMC G5 produit par l’entreprise allemande FFG.

Pour le directeur du projet au sein de la DMO, Harold Boekholt, ce contrat est « un bon exemple de l’excellente coopération entre la Norvège et les Pays-Bas, et un bon exemple d’approvisionnement conjoint entre les pays de l’OTAN ». L’accord établi entre la DMO et Thales Nederland ouvre l’acquisition de GM200 MM/C à d’autres clients, mécanisme utilisé par la Norvège et pour lequel « plusieurs pays de l’OTAN sont intéressés ». Le Danemark, par exemple, doit formaliser l’achat de cinq exemplaires.

The Norwegian army will be equipped with the Piorun air defense missile systems manufactured by Polish company Mesko S.A. from Skarżysko-Kamienna, which is part of the Polish Armaments Group. The contract was signed on November 29 in Oslo. Norway is another country, after Estonia and the United States, that has decided to purchase Pioruns.

The contract on behalf of Mesko S.A. was signed by the vice-president of the company, Przemysław Kowalczuk. As part of the contract worth tens of millions of euros, Mesko S.A. will deliver several hundred Piorun rockets and starter kits. This is another agreement that strengthens the position of Mesko S.A. and missile part of Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) on external markets. The contract is the result of an open procedure in which Mesko competed with European and American suppliers of this class of armaments. Mesko’ strategy for this product group led the company to quickly adapt its offer to the specific requirements of the Norwegian army.

Mesko S.A. has been cooperating extensively with the Norwegian company Nammo in the field of medium-caliber ammunition for years, but the contract now signed is the first for the supply of this type of armament to the Norwegian Armed Forces.

The Piorun (meaning "thunderbolt" in Polish) MANPADS, based on the Soviet-made 9K38 Igla (SA-18 Grail), is designed to be operated by one soldier. It consists of a single-stage projectile, a single-use tubular launcher, a starting mechanism, and an on-ground power supply. The Piorun missile can hit a flying target at a distance from 400 meters to 6 km and from an altitude of 10 meters minimum to 4 km maximum. The missile itself weighs 2 kg. A proximity fuse is used to allow more effective destruction of small-size aerial targets, such as UAVs.

The set is a deep modernization of the PPZR Grom set, therefore the second designation of the missile is Grom-M. The full name of the set is PPZR Piorun (in Polish: Przenośny Przeciwlotniczy Zestaw Rakietowy Piorun).

The Piorun is produced by Mesko and was created as a result of the Grom system modernization carried out in 2010–15. As part of the modernization, the effectiveness of the homing warhead was significantly improved by increasing the sensitivity of detection, which increased the distance at which the missile is able to target and hit the target, increased resistance to interference was obtained, a proximity fuze was used, an access authorization system and the set for firing was adapted to night conditions.

In 2016, the Polish Ministry of National Defense signed a contract for the purchase of 420 launchers and 1,300 rockets for the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland, planned for delivery in 2017–2020. Due to delays caused by technical problems with the propulsion system, the delivery of rockets and launch devices began in 2019 after successful testing. In 2020, Piorun missiles were fired from Poprad self-propelled anti-aircraft missile systems. The missiles are used not only by Poprad, but also by the PSR-A Pilica anti-aircraft missile and artillery system.

In 2022, Poland announced the rapid supply of Ukraine with Pioruns during the 2021–2022 Russo-Ukrainian crisis. Since the beginning of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine alleged that a number of Russian jet fighters (Su-34, Su-25) and helicopters (Mi-24, Ka-52) were shot down with Piorun missiles.

Kongsberg to supply Naval Strike Missile to Norwegian Navy

 According to a PR published by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace on December 22, 2022, the company has signed a supplemental agreement contract with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency (NDMA) for the ongoing procurement of Naval Strike Missile (NSM) for deliveries to the Norwegian Navy.

Sale of MH-60R Seahawk to Norway approved



On 26 April 2023, the US State Department has issued a press release in which it approves of the sale of six Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawks to the Luftforsvaret (RNoAF, Royal Norwegian Air Force).
The intended sale also includes other essential equipment such as engines, GPS and sonars plus spare parts. The total deal is estimated to cost the Norwegians USD1 billion. Primary purpose for the Seahawks is to perform Coast Guard duties. Secondary roles will be vertical replenishment and communications relay. Delivery dates will be subject to negotiations between Norway and Lockheed-Martin Rotary and Mission Systems.
With this purchase the RNoAF will be able to fill the Coast Guard gap that arose when it withdrew all NH90-NFH and NH90-NFH (CG) (fourteen ordered, thirteen delivered) from immediate service in June 2022. Scramble Magazine reported first on the immediate phasing out of the helicopter on 10 June 2022.
It was no secret that Norway was not pleased at all with the NH90 and the abilities of NH Industries to solve their problems. The contract was signed in 2001 with the intention to have the helicopters delivered by 2008. Only eight were ever delivered in full operational configuration. The Norwegian government has engaged in a legal battle with NH Industries and demands a full refund (USD 467 million).

Norwegian Armed Forces receive 5 Leguan Leopard 2 bridge layer vehicles


On December 4, 2023, Forsvarsmateriell (FMA), the Norwegian procurement authority, announced the delivery of five out of eight new Leguan
Leopard 2 armored vehicle launched bridges (AVLBs) to the Norwegian Armed Forces. This delivery is part of a military procurement initiated

Nouveau succès en Norvège pour Thales. Après les radars GM200 MM/C, le groupe français est cette fois retenu pour sécuriser les communications militaires du pays.

Annoncé le 8 décembre et valorisé à plus de 51 M€, ce contrat notifié à la filiale locale de Thales recouvre le développement de solutions de cryptage de nouvelle génération répondant aux besoins des forces armées norvégiennes et aux standards de l’OTAN. Les livraisons sont attendues à compter de 2027.

« Ce contrat est important pour nous afin de garantir que les informations susceptibles de mettre en cause la sécurité de la Norvège ne soient pas égarées. Thales a une longue tradition de fourniture de solutions cryptographiques de confiance aux forces armées norvégiennes et, comme toute la production a lieu en Norvège, nous avons également un bon contrôle sur l’ensemble de la chaîne de valeur et contribuons au maintien des emplois norvégiens et de l’industrie de défense norvégienne », déclarait le directeur de l’agence norvégienne des matériels de défense (FMA), Gro Jære.

« La modernisation que nous réalisons protégera nos plus grands secrets pour les 50 prochaines années. C’est pourquoi nous dépendons de partenariats stratégiques et de long terme », notait pour sa part le CEO de Thales Norway, Tom Tuhus. Hormis des normes de cryptage à la hausse, la grande différence par rapport aux systèmes en service est une multiplication par 10 de la quantité de données pouvant y transiter, relève la FMA.

Une fois la nouvelle unité de cryptage validée, la livraison en série démarrera pour remplacer progressivement les solutions actuelles. Ce contrat de développement est le premier d’une série de trois destinés à sécuriser les communications jusqu’au niveau stratégique. Le prochain marché étendra l’effort à l’échelon tactique.

La Norvège s’est engagée dans le renouvellement complet de la protection de ses flux de données militaires, une démarche ambitieuse pour laquelle plus de 200 M€ sont inscrits au budget. Initié à la fin de la décennie précédente, ce programme devait à l’origine basculer sur des acquisitions et des livraisons à compter de 2020. First Air Policing mission 331 skvadron

Half January 2024, the Luftforsvaret (RNoAF, Royal Norwegian Air Force) deployed four F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft to Keflavik air base (Iceland) for taking up the NATO's Air Policing task.

Although it is already the fourth year that RNoAF F-35As are deployed to Iceland, this is the first time that 331 skvadron leads the mission after they were reactivated on Ørland Hovedflystasjoner (Main Air Station). The detachement consists of personnel from various departments from 131 and 132 Air Wing.

The main task during the Iceland Air Policing (IAP) will be to carry out the preparedness mission Quick Reaction Alert (QRA). QRA is a 24/7 mission carried out on behalf of NATO. This is a routine mission that Norway carries out daily from Evenes air station with F-35s.

The fighter squadrons within the RNoAF do not carry individual squadron markings. The aircraft are operated from a pool and belong to the Forsvarets Logistikk Organisasjon (FLO, Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation). The aircraft are adorned with the well-known design of the triangular arrow, a toned-down version of the Norwegian flag.

One would hope they will receive indivudual unit markings in the future.
