A source in the Thai army said the publication " Kanwa the Asian Defence " that tests Ukrainian tank "OPLOT" in Thailand during the rainy season showed limited life battery that needs to be changed frequently.

The article « China, Ukraine Competing fiercely for Pakistani market The MBT » notes that according to the Thai people, the Ukrainian side is trying to provide a high level of service. Ukrainian experts in the field of tank told the newspaper that because of the difference in climate battery "Oplot" experienced increased workload and very quickly covered with condensation, and this was causing problems.

At the same time the very battery replacement is carried out very quickly. According to the publication, the battery is done in Lugansk (probably talking about CJSC "Lugansk battery"), but the company itself has been damaged in the fighting.

Thailand may buy four more Saab Gripen JAS 39 multirole combat aircraft to enhance the current fleet of 12 fighters.

Deputy Prime Minister Prajin Juntong was quoted as saying by Xinhua Thursday that Saab JAS 39 Gripen multirole combat aircraft as “technologically advanced” and suggested that his successor buy an additional four Swedish jet fighters.

The Thai air force currently deploys the 12 Swedish fighters at Air Wing 7 in the southern province of Surat Thani. The Gripen fighter squadron was procured in 2008 to replace the United States’ ageing F-5 Tiger fighters. One JAS 39 Gripen fighter is currently estimated to cost 69 million US dollars.

DSME lays keel for Thailand's first multipurpose frigate

Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
18 May 2016

South Korean shipbuilder, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME), has held a keel-laying ceremony for a multipurpose frigate on order for the Royal Thai Navy (RTN).

The ceremony was held on 16 May at DSME's shipyard in Okpo, the RTN public affairs division announced via an official social media channel the next day.

The vessel was signed under a THB14.6 billion (USD410 million) contract inked between the RTN and DSME in August 2013. The platform is based on a modernised derivative of the Kwanggaeto Daewang (KDX-1) destroyer in service with the Republic of Korea Navy.

According to an IHS Jane's report from August 2013, the ship will displace 3,650 tonnes, and will be 122.5 m long and 14.4 m wide when complete.

Royal ‪Thai‬ ‪‎Army‬ Plans to replace CH-47D ‪‎Chinook‬ with ‪‎Russian‬ Mi-17V5
May 21, 2016

Armée Thailandaise/Royal Thai Armed Forces - Page 15 Thai610

The Royal Thai Armed Forces plan to replace outdated Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopters produced in the United States with Russia’s Mi-17V5 helicopters, Thai Army’s Commander-in-Chief Teerachai Nakwanich said Wednesday.

That reported by www.aseanmildef.com.

Earlier in May, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha said that Bangkok could purchase Russia’s helicopters for its needs.

“We need helicopters to replace outdated US CH-47 Chinook that are used as main military transport helicopters. We do not have money to buy new Chinooks, our budget is very limited and Russia’s helicopters meet our requirements both in their characteristics and prices,” Nakwanich said in an interview with Fifth National TV channel of Thailand, commenting on the recent statements of the prime minister.

Russia to deliver first two SSJ-100 aircraft for Royal Thai Air Force
May 21, 2016

Armée Thailandaise/Royal Thai Armed Forces - Page 15 Thai710

Russia will deliver two Sukhoi SuperJet 100 (SSJ-100) aircraft for Thai Air Force in 2016, Minister of Industry Denis Manturov said on Wednesday, reported defense-studies.blogspot.com.

“As far as this delivery [two aircraft – TASS] is concerned, this is a contract with Thai Air Force,” the Minister said.

The project of organizing Russian aircraft supplies is a promising one, Manturov said. “We consider important to involve not merely stakeholders but a broader range of companies in it – leasing companies, banking and financial institutions,” he added.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100, is a modern fly-by-wire twin-engine regional jet with 8 (VIP) to 108 (all economy) passenger seats. With development initiated in 2000, the airliner was designed and spearheaded by Sukhoi, a division of the Russian civil aerospace company (UAC), in co-operation with several foreign partners. Its maiden flight was conducted on 19 May 2008.

USN, Royal Thai Navy conduct "most complex" anti-submarine exercise to date

Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
25 May 2016

Armée Thailandaise/Royal Thai Armed Forces - Page 15 Navy3110

The USN Navy (USN) and the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) are carrying out a series of drills that includes the "most complex" anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercise conducted between the two services to date.

The drills, which are being conducted as part of the annual bilateral naval exercise known as 'Guardian Sea', are being held in the Andaman Sea from 23 to 27 May. The exercise in 2016 involves a USN Los Angeles-class attack submarine, a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol craft and the RTN's sole aircraft carrier, the 182 m HTMS Chakri Naruebet .

Also participating from the USN is the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Stethem , the RTN's two Chinese-made Naresuan-class frigates, HTMS Naresuan and HTMS Taksin , and an unspecified number of S-70B naval helicopters, according to information provided to IHS Jane's on 25 May.

"Guardian Sea provides our navies the opportunity and challenge of detecting and tracking submarines, and to practice procedures related to anti-submarine warfare," said Capt H. B. Le, commodore of the USN's destroyer, Squadron Seven , in a statement on the bilateral drills.

"This year's exercise will be the most complex to date and we look forward to working alongside the Royal Thai Navy ashore and at sea to improve our skills and enhance our interoperability," he added.

Exercise 'Guardian Sea' in 2016 will also feature a shore phase with seminars and exchanges between subject-matter experts from both navies.

Thailand takes delivery of more Oplot MBTs

Jon Grevatt, Bangkok - IHS Jane's Defence Industry
26 May 2016

Thailand has taken delivery of another batch of BM Oplot main battle tanks (MBTs) from Ukraine, according to media reports on 26 May.

The delivery - the third since early 2014 - will take the number of Oplots in Royal Thai Army (RTA) operation to 20.

According to Ukrainian news agency Interfax-Ukraine, the batch of Oplots, which are produced by the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau, arrived at the Royal Thai Navy base at Sattahip. Another batch is scheduled for later this year, it said.

The RTA ordered 49 Oplots in 2011 for USD240 million, although the production of the Thai tanks has been subject to serious delays due to conflict in Ukraine in 2014 and 2015.

Thailand is interested in the Japanese P-1 and US-2 aircrafts
Jun 3, 2016263

Thailand is interested in the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force’s P-1 patrol aircraft and US-2 large amphibious rescue aircraft, according to asia.nikkei.com.

Japan wants to get between Beijing and Thailand’s military government, and the cooperation deal could serve as an effective wedge.Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani on Tuesday will meet Prawit Wongsuwan, Thailand’s deputy prime minister and defense minister, in Bangkok to discuss the defense equipment deal.

The contract, a prerequisite for exports of defense equipment from Japan, would require Thailand to get Japan’s nod before transferring or using any of the supplied equipment and related technologies for purposes other than those initially set forth.

The US-2 is an amphibious search and rescue plane operated by the MSDF. The amphibious plane is an aircraft that is characterized by its ability to function as both a plane and a ship. It can land on rough seas with waves as high as 3 meters, and has excellent short-distance takeoff and landing ability on water. It also has outstanding short-distance takeoff and landing ability on land.

The US-2 is a successor plane for the US-1A amphibious search and rescue plane. Remodeling and development of US-1A as a domestically produced aircraft began in 1996, and its first mass-produced plane was acquired at the end of 2008.

Thai Navy Gains Approval to Buy Three Chinese-Built, Yuan-Class Submarines
(Source: Xinhua; published July 01, 2016)
BANGKOK --- Thai Deputy Premier Prawit Wongsuwan confirmed on Friday that Thailand will buy three Chinese-built submarines for a combined price of one billion U.S. dollars.

The Thai navy's proposal to procure the three Yuan-class S26T subs from China has been put on hold since last year by the deputy premier who is concurrently defense minister.

Now that Gen Prawit has given his nod, the navy will use its fiscal 2017 budget amounting to some 333 million U.S. dollars to buy the first Chinese sub next year with the two others to follow over the next few years.

The deputy premier said the navy will only pay for the Chinese subs on instalment basis which will span a ten-year's time from next year.

The Yuan-class S26T sub is a derivative, export version of the Yuan-class 039A sub deployed by the Chinese navy and is fitted with an air-independent propulsion as an auxiliary system to a regular diesel-electric power.

Ukraine will deliver remaining 39 Oplot-T tanks to Thailand in March 2017
Jul 12, 2016

Ukraine will be able to deliver the remaining 39 Oplot-T tanks to Thailand in March next year, Ukrainian ambassador to Thailand reassured and cited unrest in eastern Ukraine as a reason for the delay. That reported by defense-studies.blogspot.com.

Ukraine ambassador to Thailand Andrii Beshta gave the assurance to Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon during a meeting at the Defence Ministry on Wednesday, ministry spokesman Kongcheep Tantrawanit was quoted as saying by Bangkokpost.

The army announced the procurement of 49 Oplot-T tanks in 2011, but Ukraine has till date delivered only 10. The value of the deal was not known but some reports put it at $240 million.

The ambassador told Gen Prawit that internal political turmoil had affected Ukraine’s defence industry and caused delays in weapons shipments to customer countries, including Thailand. “Now that the situation has improved and Kiev’s arms industry can now proceed, the country will be able to deliver the backlog of Oplot battle tanks to the Royal Thai Army in time,” Maj Gen Kongcheep quoted Beshta as saying.

Clashes between government forces and pro-Russian rebels in the former Soviet republic’s war-torn east has killed more than 9,000 since April 2014. The fighting, however, has eased since a fragile truce was reached last September.

Ukraine is willing to expand partnership in the national defence industry with Thailand, including military technology transfer and a possible joint venture with Bangkok to build a plant to manufacture and repair armoured vehicles.

Beshta supported the government’s roadmap to democracy and invited Gen Prawit to pay an official visit to Ukraine to strengthen ties between the defence ministries of the two countries, Maj Gen Kongcheep said.
