MAKS 2013: Russian industry unveils new SAM systems

Russia's Almaz-Antei exhibited its new S-350E Vityaz (Knight) surface-to-air missile (SAM) system for the first time at the Moscow Air Show (MAKS) 2013.

The S-350E is scheduled for firing trials in the fourth quarter of 2013 and potentially to enter service with the Russian armed forces in 2014. The S-350E is planned to replace the older model S-300 (SA-10 'Grumble') SAM systems currently in service, which are due to be retired in 2015, and will become the lower component of a three-tiered S-350/S-400/S-500 air-defence network.

The S-350E unit is composed of three vehicles: the PU 50P6E launcher, the MFR 50N6E fire-control radar, and the PBU 50K6E command unit. A single command unit, data-linked to individual fire units and fire-control radars, can control up to two radars and eight launchers. According to information displayed by Almaz-Antei, the mobile launcher/fire units carry 12 9M96E2 vertically-launched SAMs that can engage targets at ranges from 1.5-60 km at altitudes up to 30,000 m. This compares with a four missiles-per battery configuration of the models it will replace.

However, some specialists from Almaz-Antei suggested that the range of the system could be up to 120 km. Part of the reason for this difference could be that the system can be loaded with shorter-range missiles or a mix of both to offer a dual-layered intercept envelope.

The MFR 50N6E radar provides 360 degrees coverage and can simultaneously track up to 32 targets, with a single battery capable of engaging up to 16 targets simultaneously. As well as fixed and rotary-wing aircraft the S-350E is also designed to be effective against low-flying cruise missiles. Another improvement over the models it will replace is the system's much smaller footprint and enhanced mobility. Almaz-Antei marketing representatives claim that the system can be brought up to alert status within five minutes.

Another major SAM technology development shown at MAKS was a new missile produced by the Vympel Design Bureau of the Tactical Missiles Corporation (KTRV). The RZV-MD, which is a Russian acronym for 'Missile Surface-to-Air, Short Range', would replace the Tor SA-15 'Guantlet' system's 9M331 missile as part of a modernisation plan for this system.

The introduction of a missile produced by Vympel is a break from the normal relationship between missile designers and mission platforms. Vympel has traditionally designed air-to-air missiles (AAMs), such as the R-27 (AA-10 'Alamo') series, R-73 (AA-11 'Archer'), and RVV-AE/R-77 (AA-12 'Adder').

Vympel designers claim that the production of this missile for use in an air-defence application does not signal a major shift in their product line. "We had an order [from GosOboronZakaz] to design and produce this missile and it is now in series production," a Vympel designer told IHS Jane's , "but this was not our initiative or part of a strategic plan to enter into the air-defence market." KTRV officials also stated that they had received clearance to exhibit this missile only on the eve of the MAKS show, accounting for the lack of any marketing materials or other publicly released information.

"One of the advantages that we have in this business," said a Vympel designer, "is that adapting an AAM design concept to be employed as a SAM is a fairly uncomplicated modification. AAMs have to be designed to survive extreme stresses brought on by g-forces and supersonic air speeds that are not part of the design requirement for a SAM. This is also why it is much more difficult to perform the opposite manoeuvre: converting a SAM design into an AAM," he said referring to the long-running efforts by SAM design bureau Novator to develop a long-range AAM based on its SAM designs.

At a press briefing KTRV General Director Boris Obnosov said the company is working on new air-launched weapons applications that will be revealed as new-generation weapon systems. "We have a policy of only displaying systems at MAKS and other shows that have completed all of their required operational testing and are in series production and/or are already in Russian service."
