During the late 1960s the IDF tested two rival designs, one of the Uziel Gal, and the other of the Israel Galili. The latter design, based on the Finnish Valmet Rk.62 assault rifle (a license-built AK-47 clone), eventually won the competition and was selected as a new IDF assault rifle in the 1973, but its actual adoption was delayed by the next Israeli-Arab Yom Kippur war of the 1973. The machinery and documentation package was bought from Valmet and transferred to the state owned Israel Military Industries (IMI) company. There are some rumors that the first production Galil rifles were built on the Valmet-made receivers.

Finnish Air Force's Hawk Mk66 Trainers Receive Cockpit Upgrade

Esterline CMC Electronics (CMC) has performed a glass cockpit upgrade of the fleet of BAE Systems Hawk Mk66 advanced jet trainers for the Finnish Air Force.
In 2007, the Finnish Air Force had purchased 18 Hawk mk66 aircraft to add to the fleet of its Hawk mk51.
Under a contract signed in January 2007 with Partia, CMC has made final deliveries of its integrated glass cockpit 4000 for the avionics upgrade of Hawk mk51 trainers for the air force.
Following the avionics modernisation programme, the air force will have a fleet of 26 upgraded Hawks, consisting of 18 mk66 and eight mk51 advanced trainers.
The current upgrade will increase the quality of flight training, improve the Hawk jet trainers training efficiency and extend the training, currently carried out on Hawk aircraft.
The Hawk core avionics will include CMC's open-architecture mission computer, a wide field of view SparrowHawk head-up display (HUD) and up-front control panel, following the upgrade.
The core avionics will also have two 5in×7in multifunction displays (one in each cockpit), and a HUD repeater for the rear seat instructor in each aircraft.
The avionics suite features mature and proven operational flight programmes, integrating the aircraft sensors, radios and weapons systems to provide a wide range of navigation and mission requirements.

PICTURES: Finnish F-18 engine check reveals effects of volcanic dust
By Craig Hoyle

The Finnish air force has released images showing the effects of volcanic dust ingestion from inside the engines of a Boeing F-18 Hornet fighter, while it prepares to make inspections on several additional aircraft.

Five of the air force’s Hornets were involved in a training exercise on the morning of 15 April, just hours before the imposition of airspace restrictions due to the ash cloud spreading from a major volcanic eruption in Iceland.

One aircraft’s engines have been inspected so far using a boroscope, with melted ash clearly visible on its inside surface. The air force decided to release the images to show the potentially damaging effects of current flight activities, says chief information officer Joni Malkamäki.

“The images show that short-term flying can cause substantial damage to an aircraft engine,” the air force says. Continued operation could lead to overheating and potentially pose a threat to the aircraft and its pilot, it adds.

Checks will soon be made on the other four aircraft involved, and some engines will be removed to help Finnish company Patria – which provides in-service support for the nation’s F-18 fleet – to assess the extent of any damage caused. Its fleet comprises 55 single-seat F-18Cs and seven two-seat trainers, with each powered by two General Electric F404-402 engines.

Finland halted air force training flights yesterday, but the air force will continue to perform operational sorties as required, such as air policing missions and national security tasks.

One of its BAE Systems Hawk jet trainers also flew from Kauhava air base twice yesterday carrying an air sampling pod which collected dust from the atmosphere at various altitudes.

The air force is sharing the gathered information with the Finnish civil aviation authorities, and says it will stage more such flights as requested.

Handover of the First Pilatus PC-12 NG to the Finnish Air Force

Pilatus Aircraft Ltd is pleased to announce a major milestone with the hand-over of the first PC-12 NG Multi-Purpose Liaison Aircraft to the Finnish Air Force.

The first of six PC-12 NG Multi-Purpose Liaison Aircraft ordered by the Finnish Air Force was handed over during a commemorative ceremony at the company’s headquarters in Stans, Switzerland on the 1st July 2010.

The procurement contract for six aircraft, worth € 22.5 million, was signed in April 2009. Type conversion training of the first tranche of Finnish Air Force pilots and maintenance personnel was conducted at the Pilatus factory in Stans during the second quarter of 2010. The delivery of the first PC-12 NG Multi- Purpose Liaison Aircraft to Finland will take place later this month, three months ahead of the original contract schedule, and delivery of the remaining aircraft will be completed by August 2010.

The decision by the Finnish Air Force to purchase the Pilatus PC-12 NG is a significant benchmark for Pilatus as it marks the first fleet sale of the PC-12 to a European Air Force. The Finnish Air Force joins 32 other Air Forces around the world operating Pilatus aircraft.

The PC-12 NG aircraft with its outstanding versatility, performance and operational flexibility will be used in a Multi-Purpose Liaison Aircraft role to transport Finnish Air Force personnel and cargo and will ultimately replace the Piper PA-31-350 Chieftain aircraft which has been in service with the Finnish Air Force since 1983.
