SLAMRAAM Successfully Intercepts Targets in Two Test Firings

TEWKSBURY, Mass. | Raytheon Company's SLAMRAAM (Surface Launched Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile) system successfully destroyed an unmanned aerial vehicle target and intercepted a cruise missile target at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. The limited user test-firing data will be used to validate key system capabilities and potential enhancements in addition to providing operational assessment.

"Successful completion of this test firing demonstrates the maturity of the design and its operational capability when in the hands of soldiers," said Sanjay Kapoor, vice president for Patriot Programs at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems. "SLAMRAAM is the most cost-effective system in development to combat the increasing unmanned aerial vehicle and cruise missile threat to our deployed forces, high-value fixed assets and population centers."

The primary objective of this series of tests was to demonstrate soldiers' ability to operate the system in a tactical environment. In addition to maneuvering and emplacing the system, the soldiers had to demonstrate the ability to properly operate the system to detect, identify, track, engage and destroy both types of threat. The U.S. Department of Defense recently announced that SLAMRAAM would be funded through development and testing and will maintain an emergency operational capability.

Second MEADS Launcher Passes Key Acceptance Test

ORLANDO, Fla., MUNICH, and ROME, June 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS) successfully passed another hardware milestone when its second Launcher Platform Group (LPG) completed formal acceptance testing during March in Dello, Italy.
(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110620/FL22141)
MEADS is a ground-mobile air and missile defense system that incorporates the hit-to-kill PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) Missile, 360-degree radars, netted-distributed battle management/communication centers and high-firepower launchers. The system combines superior battlefield protection with extensive flexibility, allowing it to protect forces and critical assets against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft.
Designed by MBDA Italia and produced by subcontractor ATIB, the tested LPG is carried on a German MAN Prime Mover. Following integration with an Integrated Launcher Electronics System, Launcher Power System and Internal Communication System (MICS), the completed launcher will begin system-level integration with other MEADS elements. MEADS is scheduled to begin flight tests at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. later this year.
The lightweight MEADS launchers are easily transportable and tactically mobile. Each carries up to eight PAC-3 MSE Missiles and achieves launch readiness in minimum time. A Palletized Load Handling and Elevation System allows MEADS launchers to autonomously and rapidly reload.
During the acceptance tests, the LPG demonstrated compliance with all expected capabilities, including:

  • Automatic missile upload/offload reload that is unmatched among existing air defense systems
  • Verification of LPG emplacement from 'road march' configuration to 'ready-to-fire' position and back
  • Quick and automatic detachment of main components from the prime mover in preparation for helicopter transport.

Through improvements in range, interoperability, mobility and full 360-degree defense capability against the evolving threat, MEADS improves capability to defend troops and critical assets. MEADS defends up to eight times the coverage area with far fewer system assets. This allows for a substantial reduction in deployed personnel and equipment, with less demand for airlift.
MEADS International, a multinational joint venture headquartered in Orlando, Fla., is the prime contractor for the MEADS system. Major subcontractors and joint venture partners are MBDA in Italy, LFK in Germany and Lockheed Martin in the United States.

Development of S-500 air defense systems behind schedule - paper

The development of Russia's formidable S-500 air defense system is lagging behind schedule by at least two years, the Izvestia daily said on Wednesday citing a defense industry source.

According to the source, the first prototypes will be ready and tested by 2015, while the deliveries to the Russian army could start in 2017 at the earliest.

"The production cycle of this system is about two years. Therefore, even if the prototypes are ready by 2015, the military will not receive production models earlier than in 2017," the source said.

A source in the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that the earlier announced schedule of S-500 deliveries in 2015 was "too optimistic," as the prototypes should have already been undergoing field tests to meet the deadlines.

The S-500, a long-range air defense missile system, is expected to become the backbone of a unified aerospace defense system being formed in Russia.

The system is expected to have an extended range of up to 600 km (over 370 miles) and simultaneously engage up to 10 targets.

The Russian military has demanded that the system must be capable of intercepting ballistic missiles and hypersonic cruise missiles and plans to order at least ten S-500 battalions for the future Russian Aerospace Defense.

Lockheed Martin Conducts Successful Pac-3 Missile Test at White Sands Missile Range

DALLAS, TX | Lockheed Martin’s PAC-3 Missile successfully detected, tracked and intercepted an aerodynamic tactical ballistic missile target today in a flight test at White Sands Missile Range, N.M.

The test included a ripple fire engagement, utilizing a PAC-3 Cost Reduction Initiative (CRI) Missile as the first interceptor and a PAC-3 Baseline Missile as the second interceptor. The CRI Missile includes block upgrades to the PAC-3 Baseline Missile for performance improvement.

“We continue to improve the capability of the PAC-3 Missile, staying ahead of the evolving threat,” said Richard McDaniel, PAC-3 Programs vice president in Lockheed Martin’s Missiles and Fire Control business. “This flight test success completes the validation of PAC-3’s latest software and hardware updates as we continue to provide this extremely capable hit-to-kill weapon to the warfighter.”

The PAC-3 Missile is one of the world’s most advanced, capable and reliable theater air defense missiles. It defeats advanced tactical ballistic and cruise missiles, and fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. As the most technologically advanced missile for the PATRIOT air defense system, PAC-3 significantly increases the PATRIOT system’s firepower, as 16 PAC-3s can be loaded in place of only four legacy PATRIOT PAC-2 missiles on the PATRIOT launcher.

Lockheed Martin achieved the first-ever hit-to-kill intercept in 1984 with the Homing Overlay Experiment, using force of impact alone to destroy a mock warhead outside of the Earth’s atmosphere. Further development and testing produced today’s PAC-3 Missile, which won a competition in 1993 to become the first hit-to-kill interceptor produced by the U.S. government. The PAC-3 Missile has been the technology pathfinder for today’s total conversion to kinetic energy interceptors for all modern missile defense systems.

Lockheed Martin is a world leader in systems integration and the development of air and missile defense systems and technologies, including the first operational hit-to-kill missile. It also has considerable experience in missile design and production, infrared seekers, command and control/battle management, and communications, precision pointing and tracking optics, as well as radar and signal processing. The company makes significant contributions to all major U.S. missile defense systems and participates in several global missile defense partnerships.

Czech firm presents innovated Soviet missile system

March 7, 2012

The Czech Retia company seated in Pardubice has developed a new missile guidance system solving the replacement of the original Soviet-made missiles for the 2K12 KUB anti-aircraft missile complex, Petr Tichy, from Retia, has told reporters.

The company presented results of its research commissioned by the Defence Ministry on Tuesday.

The Apside Italian missile has been selected as the most suitable replacement of the 3M9M3 Soviet-made missile. The control system had to be completely changed for its integration.

"Only the skeleton has remained from the original Russian equipment, the interior is brand-new," Tichy said.

The research was launched in 2009 with the aim to find a new missile and the optimal extent of the system's adjustments to preserve and improve the functions of the anti-aircraft missile complex and prolong its lifespan.

The MBDA supranational company producing Apside missiles has cooperated with Retia on the project.

MDBA makes arms for most NATO countries' militaries, the daily Pravo reports today. It says the Retia-made missile guidance system should be interesting mainly for the post-communist NATO countries, former members of the Warsaw Pact, that still have the Soviet missiles in their arsenals.

The militaries of various countries use some 1000 original Russian missile complexes.

Retia would like to participate in their upgrading.

The Tuesday presentation was attended by military representatives of Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia.

The innovated system will have to be tested thoroughly before it can be used in practice.

The Czech military has four batteries of the 2K12 KUB original complexes, each consisting of one radar and four launch systems, said General Bohuslav Dvorak, the Czech Defence Ministry's section head.

Brand-new systems would cost 15 million crowns, while the upgrading on the basis of the Retia firm's research costs up to three million crowns, Dvorak said.

Retia is developing special electronics.

Its production programmes consist of the development of radar and arms system electronics as well as security systems. In the past, the firm developed the device that is able to recognise and locate persons behind firm barriers.

Raytheon’s First New-production Patriot System Debuts in Successful Flight Test

Raytheon Company successfully completed a system-level guided flight test of the new-production Patriot at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. The modernized Patriot provides an affordable, low-risk and rapid path to meet the warfighter’s current and future air and missile defense requirements.

“The system’s flawless performance using all newly-built major end items is a significant milestone for global air and missile defense. It also highlights the capability of the combat-proven Patriot and the viability of the global Patriot supply base,” said Sanjay Kapoor, vice president for Integrated Air and Missile Defense at Raytheon’s Integrated Defense Systems business. “Our customers and warfighters will greatly benefit from the new designs, such as the color LCD displays with touch screens and digital track via missile guidance.”

The system-level test used new-production major end items (radar, Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical [GEM-T] missile, launching station, Information Coordination Central, and Engagement Control Station) against a long-standing performance scenario to verify system capability.

In the guided test flight, the system searched, detected and tracked an air-breathing target flying at a low altitude in a high-clutter environment, which the GEM-T missile engaged and destroyed. This scenario was specifically chosen by Raytheon and the U.S. Army for its ability to provide a rigorous test of all aspects of the Patriot system. This builds on the successful test of the first new ground-up production GEM-T missile announced last October.
