Two of the Visby corvettes, HMS Helsingborg and HMS Harnosand, are now operational with the Royal Swedish Navy, as part of the Third Naval Warfare Flotilla, based in Karlskrona. Built by Kockums, they significantly enhance the Swedish Navy’s capability.

“With their stealth technology, the Visby corvettes are the right concept for the future, given the environment in which we shall be operating, namely the littoral zone. The ships will form the core of the Swedish Navy for years to come. And they have attracted considerable international interest,” states Rear Admiral Anders Grenstad, Inspector General of the Royal Swedish Navy.

The ships are built for service with Sweden’s rapid reaction force, designed primarily to operate in the Baltic, although also on international missions in the littoral zone. Featuring full stealth capabilities, these vessels are difficult to detect either with radar or other sophisticated detection technologies, offering numerous tactical advantages. They are constructed of carbon fibre.

It is also possible to exit the stealth mode, perhaps on an international mission where a temporary need to demonstrate some military muscle arises, after which the ship can ‘disappear’ again. The Swedish Navy has always operated in the littoral zone, an area in which it is specialised. Similar coastal waters exist in all parts of the world, of course, precisely those areas where maritime traffic is most intense.

The Visby concept has generated a lot of attention, and naval experts the world over are following developments with keen interest.

Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has awarded Thales a contract to equip the Swedish Armed Forces with a next generation IP-based tactical communication infrastructure under the KomNod Programme. The Swedish Armed Forces (SwAF) is on its way to implement an IP-based communication infrastructure. One critical component in the overall infrastructure will be integrated voice and IP services in vehicle platforms.
Thales’s comprehensive solution offers a large number of communication services, such as radio gateway, telephony, alarms, routing, ETHERNET, intercom and management services. These services are based upon the next generation of the well-known, field proven SOTASIP system, a fully IP-based ruggedised multi-service vehicular platform with a small physical footprint.
As Glenn Pedersen, Managing Director of Thales Norway, explains: "We are extremely proud of the trust we have been given by FMV as part of this programme. Une vue des futurs SM suédois

A part des gouvernails en croix de st andré, des sonars "phases array" sur les cotés et un kiosque légèrement modifié, une taille légèrement agrandie ( plus probablement une prop AIP amélioré ), ce design est très proche des GOTLAND, J'aurais crus que les suédois ( toujours assez en avant sur les SM ) tentent quelque chose "en rupture".

Le groupe de défense suédois Saab a annoncé mercredi un contrat de 2 milliards de couronnes (205,9 millions d'euros) pour améliorer la flotte des avions de combat Gripen de l'armée de l'air suédoise.
La mise à niveau des chasseurs vise à augmenter leurs capacités opérationnelles, via de nouvelles armes, l'augmentation de la portée du radar ou encore l'amélioration des contre-mesures et des systèmes de communications.
Le montant du contrat est étalé sur quatre ans et la mise à niveau des avions sera effectuée par des usines suédoises, indique Saab, distinct du constructeur automobile du même nom depuis 1990.
Le Gripen, fleuron du groupe suédois de défense, est actuellement engagé dans une bataille commerciale acharnée pour vendre 36 avions de combat au Brésil, un contrat où le Rafale du groupe français Dassault est le favori.
Outre l'avion de combat, Saab commercialise une vaste gamme d'armes et de produits militaires, entre autres des missiles, des armes anti-chars, des simulateurs et des radars.

BAE Producing 24 Archer Systems For Norway, Sweden Armies

The Norwegian and Swedish armies are each to receive 24 new Archer self-propelled artillery systems as a result of a 135 million pound ($200 million) launch order struck with the weapons developer BAE Systems.

The Archer system has been developed under a 100 million pound contract awarded by the two governments in 2003. It's the first major result of an effort across the Nordic nations to increase collaboration on weapons development and procurement.
The weapon primarily comprises BAE's Swedish produced FH77 B05 52 caliber cannon with a modified Volvo 6x6 commercial articulated vehicle. The Norwegian Protector remote weapon station produced by Kongsberg will be fitted to the cab of the Volvo vehicle.
The Global Combat System Weapons arm of BAE said in a statement issued March 26 that the automated weapon system can respond to calls for fire within 30 seconds while the ordnance can be stowed and ready for rapid redeployment within 30 seconds of the completion of a fire mission.
News of the Nordic artillery award comes at the end of a bad week for BAE's land systems business following the loss of a major armoured vehicle order in the U.K. to rivals General Dynamics. BAE was offering the Swedish built CV90 vehicle.
The British contract announcement earlier this week did offer some small consolation to BAE. The MoD reconfirmed its intention to use the 40mm cannon developed by the BAE/Nexter joint venture CTA International.
Use of the cannon has been previously mandated by the Ministry of Defence for the scout version of the new British armoured vehicle and a Warrior infantry vehicle update. Speculation recently circulating in the U.K. had hinted at the British having second thoughts about the cannon.

Sweden to Acquire Two Submarines
Sweden is planning to acquire two new state-of-the-art submarines and upgrade two aging vessels, according to Defence Minister Sten Tolgfors.
In February 2010, Swedish shipbuilding company Kockums AB signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration to construct the next-generation submarines, according to barentsobserver.com.
The two new submarines will replace the navy's two aging Södermanland Class submarines and are scheduled to be delivered to the Swedish Navy in 2018-2019.
Two of the navy's Gotland Class attack submarines will also receive major upgrades as part of the proposed government investment.

Saab AB (publ), has selected AAI's Shadow 200 Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System (TUAS) for use by the Swedish armed forces. As the winner of a competition conducted by Saab on behalf of the Swedish Ministry of Defence, AAI has contracted to provide two Shadow 200 systems and associated services under the $31.4 million award.

Primary among Sweden's TUAS requirements was the need for a mature, proven system. AAI's Shadow systems have established their capabilities for a number of customers, including the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, during more than 500,000 flight hours, the majority of which have taken place in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Our Shadow systems have amassed a record-breaking number of combat flight hours," says Vice President of Unmanned Aircraft Systems Steven Reid of AAI. "Having years of operational proof to confirm the system's capabilities and performance, customers like the Swedish armed forces can invest confidently in a Shadow unmanned aircraft fleet."

The Shadow TUAS leverages AAI's interoperable One System(R) Ground Control Station (OSGCS) to receive and disseminate battlefield video. The OSGCS is NATO Standardization Agreement 4586 compliant, meaning that it enables interoperability among international military forces by supporting the operation of numerous different unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) used by allied forces. As a result, Sweden's Shadow 200 systems will provide the added benefit of working with equipment and capabilities in common with those of other NATO forces.

A single Shadow system includes four aircraft; two OSGCS systems and ground data terminals; four One System Remote Video Terminals, or OSRVTs; a One System portable ground control station; and associated components and support equipment.

With decades of experience designing, manufacturing, fielding and supporting UAS, AAI's capabilities extend beyond system delivery, with an emphasis on a comprehensive UAS strategy for each customer.

"AAI is a full-service UAS provider," says Senior Vice President and General Manager Ellen Lord of AAI. "We take a partnership role in helping customers determine the correct system for the mission, then go a step further to build a total-value solution. This might include training devices or instructional services, in-field logistics support or even operational services. We are equipped to build all of these components into a UAS solution so customers are set up for success."

Swedish Parliament votes in favor of procuring new submarines
On June 16 the Swedish Parliament voted in favor of allowing the government to procure two new submarines during 2010.

"I am not surprised that the parliament decided to make this decision as it was a part of the proposed spring budget presented earlier this year by the government. The decision is however very important since it formally allows the government to continue the process of procuring these submarines. The parliamnets decision is therefore positive from a Kockums perspective," says Ola Alfredsson, CEO of Kockums AB

Kockums AB has earlier received the government contract to design and propose a construction of a new submarine. The company has also started to prepare for this by hiring new employees like system and development engineers.

"The procurement of two new submarines will mean an essential upgrade of the Swedish submarine capacity. Our new submarine construction represents the latest in marine technology. The submarine will, among other things, be strengthened in its role as an information gatherer being equipped with refined stealth technology that will enable it to see and hear everything within a large diameter without being detected. It is constructed in order to operate effectively in the Baltic Sea and other littoral waters," Ola Alfredsson concludes.

Saab wins $12 million contract to design combat system for new Swedish submarines

Defence and security company Saab has received an order from Kockums AB for overall design of the combat management system as well as solutions for integrating the system aboard next-generation submarines. The order is worth approximately MSEK 100($12 million).

The order follows the contract recently signed between Kockums and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the overall design of Sweden's next-generation submarines. Saab’s contract includes a combat management system as well as solutions for integrating the system and subsystems on board.

"Saab has world leading expertise within the area of naval command and control systems and our strategic cooperation with Kockums is very important for us. We look forward to being part of the development of Sweden's next generation of submarines," says Gunilla Fransson, Head of business area Security and Defence Solutions within Saab.

The next generation of submarines represents several steps forward in technical development within the underwater field, while the submarines are adapted to current and future threats as well as to the international efforts relevant to the Swedish Armed Forces today. Among other things, the role of the submarine for intelligence gathering is to be enhanced, and stealth technology shall be further improved.
