Sweden's armed forces successfully complete validation testing of ITT's coastal surveillance radar

CLIFTON, N.J. | ITT Corporation (NYSE:ITT) announced the completion of successful factory acceptance testing on its coastal surveillance radar system upgrade for the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV).

"This successful milestone culminates more than three years of development work to upgrade Sweden's coastal surveillance radar systems," said Bill Devlin, vice president of ITT's radar, reconnaissance and acoustic sensors business area. "ITT will move forward with full rate production to provide Sweden's defense forces with greatly improved capabilities to protect their coastal borders."

The Reliability and Modification (REMO) 870 upgrade program is based on ITT's new LCR-2020 integrated coastal surveillance radar system. With this adaptation of radar technology, ITT now offers customers an end-to-end radar, command, control and communications solution. Using this system, which increases awareness through an integrated network of radars, the customer can detect and intercept intruders more effectively, even in the harshest coastal marine environments.

The production of the radar system will be completed at ITT's electronic systems business in Van Nuys, Calif.

Swedish battle boats start trials in the Netherlands and UK

In future international operations, Swedish fighter crafts may be used. But then it must be possible to load and unload the boats on larger ships for further transport. Two Swedish fighter craft is now being tested in the Netherlands and in UK.

FMV has allowed the Swedish Docksta shipyard to rebuild two battle ships of the CB90 model. The boats have been upgraded so that they can be lifted with existing davits on the Dutch and British ships. Sweden lends two boats for six months trials in the Netherlands and Great Britain.

“The trials aim to verify that the boats can be winched on board the larger ships, "said Kristofer Gattberg, Project Manager at FMV. Meanwhile, the two countries have the opportunity to look closely at the Swedish fighter boats.

Future challenges at sea, and in coastal areas such as disasters, threats from pirates and terrorists requires cooperation between countries. The Swedish Armed Forces Amphibious regiment already has a good cooperation with their colleagues in the Netherlands and Great Britain. The Swedish fighter boats have attracted considerable interest in both countries.

Booth the Dutch and the British navy want to be able to operate in coastal areas and they need to supplement their landing craft with some kind of battleship. There is also the requirement that boats easily can be taken on board the larger vessel to be moved over longer distances associated with international operations.

“Within the FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces this project is about learning for the future. The redevelopment of the CB90 significantly will expand the use of the boat. The boats can easily be loaded and unloaded and be used anywhere in the world, "said Kristofer Gattberg.

In the autumn Swedish, Dutch and British Amphibious squadrons will practice together.

Gripen fire Meteor for Swedish Integration Programme

October 20, 2010 by Rob Vogelaar · Leave a Comment

It was the first live-firing of the Swedish Integration programme. Gripen has also been the launch platform from the start of the development of the Meteor missile.

The purpose of this test was to verify the model on separation of the missile from the aircraft. The impact from the missile exhaust plume on the aircraft engine was also studied. As an important part of the integration work the data-link was verified as well.

An initial evaluation showed that the missile separated from the inboard pylon station in a normal manner and the data link between the missile and the aircraft was activated. Temperature data from the aircraft engine was also monitored. The missiles flight was terminated as planned at a predetermined position.

“Saab together with FMV Test & Evaluation Department accomplished the campaign very successfully. Saab evaluates and analyzes the data gathered from the test firing together with the supplier,” said Michael

Östergren, Project Manager at FMV.

With this firing the first of two phases in the Swedish integration is now completed.

The first phase was designed to support the development of the missile while the next phase is designed to fully integrate the missile on Gripen. The final integration with Gripen for the Swedish Air Force has recently begun and is expected to be finalized during 2013.

New MBT122B Evolution with Unprecedented Protection

The Swedish MBT122 has already been recognized as one of the best protected main battle tanks in the world.

In a recent study program of the tank for the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) in Sweden, IBD Deisenroth Engineering succeeded in the development of a further improved protection dedicated to the tank. The concept is thereby designed to protect against the actual and future threats in theatre, especially in asymmetric and urban warfare.

IBD's focus in this development was the optimization of the protection against the actual threats in theatre: new variants of RPGs, IEDs and EFPs as well as keeping high protection against “conventional threats”. A new light weight and highly efficient SLAT armour was designed as an amendment of the protection concept. The effectiveness of the new solutions has been verified against all threats in a broad test campaign. Thanks to all these efforts the concept provides an outstanding 360 degree protection of the crew.

The completely modular design of the concept allows the use of any mixture of old and new protection modules. This solution is of great advantage in theatre with regard to maintenance and repairs.

Despite the improved overall protection level of the MBT 122B Evolution the weight increase of about 350 kg is only minimal such maintaining the high mobility of the tank. Also the width of the vehicle could be kept to exactly 4.0 m which is also an important factor for the use in urban environment.

Swedish Gripen fighters on Libya standby

The Swedish military said Monday that they would be ready to deploy Jas Gripen fighter aircraft within ten days, should Sweden be asked to participate in the military action against Libya.
“The armed forces have informed the government that we are able to deploy six to eight aircraft. At the moment they are on a ten day standby, so it wouldn’t take longer than that,” Therese Fagerstedt of the Swedish Armed Forces information department told news agency TT.

Where the aircraft would be stationed and how much ground crew would be needed is yet to be determined.

How long it would actually take for the unit to be deployed depends on the political decision making process.

Sources with insight into NATO have revealed to the Swedish Dagens Nyheter daily that Sweden will be asked to lend their support by Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest.

The Liberal Party (Folkpartiet) and the Christian Democrats have criticised the stance of the foreign minister Carl Bildt and the government, who have opted to wait for the request rather than offer Swedish help.

Allan Widman of the Liberal Party would like the government to make available the ‘Expeditionary Air Wings’, an eight plane strong flying unit, which is part of the Nordic Battle Group.

“I think we need to send the message that we can and wish to participate,” he told DN.

The foreign minister Carl Bildt does not however share the view of his government coalition colleague.

In a radio interview on Sunday, Bildt said that Sweden should wait to offer military assistance until requested.

However, if NATO was to approach Sweden, Bildt did not rule out possible military participation.

“All alternatives are still on the table. In the case of a request we will look at all the different ways that Sweden can contribute,” he said.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Stefan Ring, an expert on military strategy from the Swedish National Defense College (Försvarshögskolan), there is a need of further air power in the Libya operations.

“France have deployed about a hundred planes, which may sound like a lot. But compared to the air attacks on Kosovo and Serbia there are very few aircraft in action. Back then there were 700-800 aircraft per day,” he told TT.

On Monday Carl Bildt heads to Brussels to meet with foreign ministers from other EU member states.

On his personal blog "Alla Dessa Dagar" (literally: All These Days) he wrote on Sunday that the situation in Libya is certain to be high on the agenda.

“Sweden will support the resolution in the way and with the resources that we are best suited to,“ Bildt wrote.

At the moment, he pointed out, the military action is the main focus, but there is more to the resolution than that and a role for Sweden in the operations is by no means certain.

First Swedish female Gripen pilot

April 21, 2011 by Marcel van Leeuwen · Comments Off

Captain Anna Dellham recently completed her first Gripen solo flight to become the first female Gripen pilot in the Swedish Air Force.
In fact, Anna Dellham is Sweden’s only female combat pilot whatsoever. She was awarded her wings in the mid-1990s and flew the Viggen until the aircraft was taken out of service before going onto fly the SK 60. She now works with Gripen’s development at FTS, the Aeronautical Command of the Air Force Headquarters.
So what does she think about being the country’s only female combat pilot? In the Swedish Defence Recruitment Agency’s magazine she explains: “I think it is a shame. Flying combat aircraft is extremely special and rewarding. Flying is no harder for a woman than a man. There are no rational arguments why there are not more female combat pilots. It is about coping while your body is subjected to g-forces when flying. Those wanting to become pilots should be in good physical condition, but it isn’t necessary to be super-fit.”
She has flown in Gripen several times before, but now she has flown solo for the very first time. The flight took off from Skaraborg wing (F7). Initially she will fly the Gripen A/B and will later move on to the C/D version.
“It feels fantastic and this will be by far my best professional year in a more than a decade,” says Anna Dellham. “The Gripen system is an extremely good aircraft with excellent flight characteristics.”

Saab signs contract with FMV for complete support and maintenance of Helicopter 15

Saab has signed a new contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) regarding the support and maintenance of Helicopter 15 (Agusta 109 LUHS), operated by the Swedish Armed Forces. The contract, including options, has a potential order value of around SEK 900 million [$148.37 million; €99.64 million - Ed.] over 10 years. As part of the contract a first order intake of MSEK 350 has been registered.

The contract extends over a period of 6 years beginning in 2012 with option for additional 2 years and thereafter another 2 years. The contract includes the following:

• Support and maintenance of all 20 helicopters including materiel and technical personnel.
• Base staff in the form of management, planning and administration.
• Logistics and materiel provision.
• On-call services in the form of additional technical personnel.

The contract will come into force following a 10-day period without any third party appeal.
"With this contract, we are consolidating our previous long-standing and strong cooperation with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration and the Swedish Armed Forces regarding their helicopter operations. For Saab, this strengthens our core business," says Lars-Erik Wige head of Saab's Support and Services business area.

The commitment is part of the strategic development within Saab towards a broader civil and military helicopter operation.

"For Saab, this total commitment regarding Helicopter 15 is a significant and vital step in driving development further within this area," says Torsten Öhman, head of the Customer Alliance Solutions division and responsible for helicopter operations within the Support and Services business area.

Helicopter 15 currently operates from two bases in Sweden, Linköping and Ronneby. Linköping is the main base for maintenance, inspections and repairs, meaning that the majority of Saab's support and maintenance resources will be based there, including technicians, mechanics and base staff. The base in Ronneby will also have the capacity for flights and limited maintenance, inspections and troubleshooting.

ITT completes major milestone on Swedish coastal surveillance program

CLIFTON, N.J., May 16, 2011 — ITT Corporation (NYSE:ITT) announced the successful completion of Production Acceptance Testing (PAT) for the first system of the Reliability and Modification (REMO) 870 Program to modernize Sweden's coastal surveillance radar systems.
For the past 20 years, Sweden's military forces have depended on ITT radars to defend against terrorists, pirates and other unwanted intruders. In May 2008, ITT began a series of design upgrades based on ITT's new LCR-2020 radar and its integrated, turnkey coastal surveillance system, the SABER-2020. This successful PAT milestone marks the first of multiple production deliveries – which will occur for the next few years – of the upgraded system.
"Our solution enables the Swedish military to scan the entire coastline and track potential threats on the surface and at low elevations, while providing excellent, all-weather detection," said Bill Devlin, vice president and general manager of ITT's Radar Reconnaissance and Acoustic Systems business area. "This milestone affirms our longstanding relationship as a major supplier to the Swedish Defense Forces and strengthens our position as a premier international supplier of integrated coastal surveillance solutions."
Representatives from the Swedish Defence Material Administration, the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters and ITT Electronic Systems were present for the two days of test activities in Van Nuys, Calif. The PAT process verified that the first production system was ready to be placed into operation immediately.
"We are very satisfied with the test results for this first system and we are looking forward to the coming deliveries according to the plan," said Major Ulf Finér, program manager at the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters.
ITT Electronic Systems provides innovative integrated solutions for the global defense, intelligence, information assurance and commercial aerospace sectors. As a leader in electronic warfare and communications, we leverage our experience and innovation to ensure the success of our customers' critical missions. Our technology leadership extends into the areas of airborne electronic attack, networked and satellite communications, counter-improvised explosive devices, airspace management, surveillance systems, airborne and shipboard radar, acoustic sensors, advanced composite structures and electronic weapons interfaces.

STRATFORD, Connecticut - Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. today announced that the U.S. Government has agreed to sell 15 Sikorsky UH-60M BLACK HAWK helicopters to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (or FMV, which is the Swedish acronym) for operation by the Swedish Armed forces. The transaction will take place under the U.S. Government’s Foreign Military Sales program, and represents the introduction of the latest and most technologically advanced BLACK HAWK model into Europe. Sikorsky is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

The Swedish Armed Forces will use the aircraft for medical evacuation, utility, and search and rescue missions. Sikorsky is slated to deliver six of the helicopters in 2011 and the remaining nine in 2012 under an accelerated production schedule.
Sweden is a member of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.
“We’re honored to support the Swedish Armed Forces, and we congratulate them for being the first European Union nation to choose this highly evolved UH-60M aircraft, which is part of a lineage of aircraft that have proven themselves countless times under the most extreme conditions all over the world,” said Mick Maurer, President of Sikorsky Military Systems.
The UH-60M helicopter is the latest version in the long and highly successful BLACK HAWK family. It is flown by the U.S. Army and provides additional payload and range, advanced digital avionics, improved handling qualities and situational awareness, active vibration control, and improved survivability compared with the predecessor UH-60L model.
The BLACK HAWK helicopter is well known for its ruggedness, survivability and mission flexibility, having logged more than 9 million flight hours since the first model was introduced in 1978. Worldwide, approximately 2,700 are in operation today. Sweden will become the 26th nation to operate BLACK HAWK helicopters and only the second in Europe, where Austria operates UH-60L models. U.S. forces have flown various BLACK HAWK models for 1.2 million flight hours to date in Afghanistan and Iraq without a single material failure.
Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., based in Stratford, Conn., is a world leader in helicopter design, manufacture and service. United Technologies Corp., based in Hartford, Conn., provides a broad range of high technology products and support services to the aerospace and building systems industries.

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Sperry Marine business unit has won a contract to upgrade the navigation radars on five Swedish navy patrol boats.

Under the contract, Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine will retrofit each ship with two dual-band interswitched chart radar systems with navalized display features. The systems are based on Sperry Marine's advanced VisionMaster FT navigation technology with WideView multifunction displays. The initial contract includes five ships with options for six additional ships, plus a spare system, spare parts, service and maintenance. CA Clase Marinelektronik AB, Sperry Marine's sales and service representative in Sweden, will be responsible for installing, commissioning, testing and technical support for the project.

"This important contract win builds on our longstanding relationship as a key supplier to the Swedish navy," said Hans Rasmussen, director of business development, Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine. "The new radar systems are part of the Swedish navy's important retrofit program, and will provide enhanced situational awareness for the ships to meet mission requirements."

Built at the Djupvik Shipyard in Sweden, the 23-meter aluminum-hull patrol boats were designed for anti-submarine warfare and maritime control. They also perform reconnaissance above and below the water surface, mine piloting, maritime surveillance, and search and rescue, and can deploy for up to five days.
