Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria Eye Joint Military Brigade
Jaroslaw Adamowski, Defense News 4:14 p.m. EDT April 25, 2016

WARSAW, Poland — The governments of Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria are discussing plans to set up a joint military brigade, according to an announcement by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko following a meeting with his Romanian counterpart, Klaus Iohannis, in Bucharest, reports local news agency Novinite.

Poroshenko said that he also discussed the project with Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev during the latter’s March 27 visit to Kiev.

The latest move by the three countries follows an earlier initiative by Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania to set up a joint military brigade, dubbed the Litpolukrbrig. The brigade will comprise about 4,000 troops, and it is expected to reach full combat readiness in 2017.

The Ukrainian president said the initiative could become a significant contribution to enhancing regional security. Under the plan, the new brigade will be modeled on the Litpolukrbrig.

Numerous Eastern European countries have increased their regional defense cooperation in response to Russia’s military intervention in eastern Ukraine, and the subsequent takeover of the Crimean peninsula by Moscow.

Some of the potential areas of enhanced regional military cooperation include the countries’ air capabilities. The Czech government is mulling setting up a joint air squadron with Hungary which would comprise Saab JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets operated by the two countries’ air forces. Meanwhile, the Bulgarian Air Force is aiming to replace its aging fleet of Soviet-designed fighters with new aircraft, with the Gripen shortlisted as a potential replacement, beside the US F-16 and Eurofighter Typhoon

Ukrainian Forces Accuse Donbass Militia of Opening Fire Over 40 Times

Ukrainian Forces Accuse Donbass Militia of Opening Fire Over 40 Times

KIEV (Sputnik) – According to a Facebook statement posted by the press center of Kiev’s military operation in Donbass on Saturday, the militants became "significantly more active at dusk [on Friday]."

Kiev launched a special military operation in Ukraine’s southeast in April 2014, after local residents refused to recognize the new Ukrainian authorities, which came to power as a result of a coup.
In February 2015, a peace agreement was signed between Ukraine’s conflicting sides in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. The deal stipulates a full ceasefire, a weapons withdrawal from the line of contact in eastern Ukraine, an all-for-all prisoner exchange and constitutional reforms, which would give a special status to the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics in the southeast.
Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin told the UN Security Council on Thursday that only 9 percent of the weapons declared by the Ukrainian forces remain at warehouses. According to Churkin, most of the weapons have been spotted on the frontlines in Donbas, despite the Minsk agreement.

Ukraine launches flight testing of Mil-24PU-2 upgrade helicopter
May 19, 2016

State Enterprise «Konotop Aircraft Repair Plant «AVIAKON», part of state corporation State Concern «Ukroboronprom», has started flight testing of prototype of the Mil-24PU-2 upgrade helicopter.

A prototype of the Mi-24PU-2 started converted from Mi-24P helicopter at the “Aviacon” back in 2011, but work was delayed due to the difficulties of integration “board systems”, lack of funding.

Ukrainian Mi-24PU-2 is equipped with the modern Motor Sich TV3-117VMA-SBM1V-02 engines, with power output of 2500 HP. Not only do these engines increase the maximum take-off weight of the helicopter (almost 1000 kilograms of increase), they also make it possible to operate at altitudes exceeding 7 thousand meters. Application of these engines also increases the top speed of the helicopter, up to 312 kilometers per hour. It is worth to mention the fact, for the sake of comparison, that the operational ceiling of the AH-64 Apache helicopter is 6400 meters, while its top speed is 293 kilometers per hour.

Mi-24PU-2 variant shares a lot of features with the Mi-24G export version, however, most of the applied solutions have been developed locally. The most important changes – in comparison with the old model – are visible in the avionics suite, which has been modified to be better tailored for use on the contemporary battlefield. The modifications include additional Garmin GPSMAP-695 navigation system radar transponder with a radar altimeter, modern radio and modern flight parameters processing and recording systems. The targeting system has also been significantly upgraded, since not only does it consist of the APS-17 WPM-W sight, as it also includes the Ukrainian Handron Adros FPM-1KB laser range-finder and target designator.

Also, the helicopter received the night goggles PNL 3 Bielik and helmet THL-5NV (used in Polish helicopter W-3PL Głuszec, is a modernized combat search and rescue variant of the helicopter W-3A).

In cooperation with the Polish company and Izyum State-Owned Instrument-Making Plant, plans were made to modernize the avionics suite, including installation of a stabilized optronic sensor, complemented with the satellite navigation system.

Ukrainian 25th Separate Airborne Brigade undergoes battalion tactical drills
May 26, 2016

The 25th Separate Airborne Brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces undergoes battalion tactical drills.

Servicemen worked out assault actions of aviation in favour of airborne forces. Reactive artillery fired on the enemy in the landing area. Simultaneously, combat vehicles and personnel of the airborne battalion dropped from Il-76 and An-26 airlifters.

After landing, during raids, the forces destroyed an imaginary enemy’s weaponry. Then battalion tactical group moved to the defined region.

The 25th Separate Dnipropetrovsk Airborne Brigade is a airborne formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. After elements surrendered 6 vehicles to pro-Russian separatists in the 2014 Sloviansk standoff, Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov announced the brigade would be disbanded. But this decision was canceled later on. Despite this the Brigade has taken an active role in the fighting in Eastern Ukraine.

Jun 7, 2016

LITPOLUKRBRIG begins its participation in ANAKONDA 16 Exercise oriented on training and coordination Crisis-response Operations in Nowa Dęba training ground, scheduled to take place between 6th and 17th of June.

The exercise opening ceremony was held by Brigadier General Adam Joks, the Multinational Brigade Commander today, on 6th of June, and involved participants from Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Hungary and the USA.

During welcoming speech Brigadier General Adam Joks expressed his belief in the significance of this event. According to the LITPOLUKRBRIG Commander’s words, ANAKONDA 16 Exercise creates a wide spectrum of opportunities to cooperate with military partners from participating nations. During next 10 days the soldiers will work, train and live together shoulder to shoulder to achieve all desired training objectives and develop military capabilities. Hence, participation in this operation will allow raising the level of training, establishing mutual trust and understanding between the involved armies.

“ANAKONDA 16 provides us, the LITPOLUKRBRIG Command and certain affiliated units, with a possibility to verify the capacities of interoperability within the Brigade, as well as cooperation with the potential and current partners of the unit. We are brothers in arms and we will show that during this training event. At the end of the day we will be more proficient, more interoperable and better prepared to meet the NATO standards and international cooperation military requirements,” Brigadier General Adam Joks commented.

In particular, a Ukrainian airborne platoon with 80th Airborne Brigade has been attached to a Polish battalion. It opens an opportunity to exercise interoperability on tactical level and explore successfulness of combined tactical units.

It shall be recalled that the ANAKONDA 16 exercise, taking place at the largest Polish military ranges all around the country, will involve 31 thousand soldiers, hailing from 23 countries.

At the end of the ceremony Brigadier General Adam Joks wished all participants the successful and safe training and good working atmosphere.

NATO Steps Up Support for Ukraine with Comprehensive Package of Assistance
(Source: NATO; issued June 15, 2016)
Defence Ministers agreed on Wednesday (15 June 2016) to boost NATO’s support for Ukraine with a Comprehensive Package of Assistance. The Package aims to help Ukraine strengthen its defences by building stronger security structures. In a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission, Allied ministers also exchanged views with Ukrainian Defence Minister Stepan Poltorak on the current security situation in eastern Ukraine, and the progress of government reforms.

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg explained that the Comprehensive Package brings together all the strands of NATO’s support, and will “help Ukraine establish more effective and efficient defence and security structures, and to strengthen civilian control over them.” He highlighted that the Alliance is already implementing projects under the Trust Funds established for Ukraine, including on command and control, cyber defence, and rehabilitating wounded soldiers. “We are also developing new projects, including in the areas of countering hybrid warfare and explosive devices,” he said.

“The situation in eastern Ukraine, caused by Russia’s actions, remains of concern,” the Secretary General said, pointing to daily ceasefire violations and impediments to the work of OSCE observers. Ministers agreed that the Minsk Agreements remain the path to a sustainable solution to the conflict, and urged all parties to fully implement them. They also expressed NATO’s enduring support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, reiterating that Allies do not and will not recognise the illegal and illegitimate annexation of Crimea. “Russia needs to stop supporting the militants, and withdraw its forces and military equipment from Ukrainian territory,” said Mr. Stoltenberg.

During the meeting, Minister Poltorak presented Ukraine’s defence reform roadmap, the Strategic Defence Bulletin. “Modernising Ukraine’s forces while they are engaged in conflict is no easy task, but the government is making good progress,” said the Secretary General.

Allies will meet with President Poroshenko in the NATO-Ukraine Commission at the Warsaw Summit in July.
