Indonesia and Ukraine sign military technology accord

Jon Grevatt, Bangkok - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
09 August 2016

Indonesia and Ukraine have signed an agreement to expand co-operation in defence trade and military technologies, official statements in Jakarta have said. The agreement was signed during Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's visit to Indonesia, which ended 7 August.

Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) the two countries will explore areas of potential defence trade, featuring Ukrainian exports to Indonesia and followed by defence industrial co-operation. Statements indicated that the accord will focus on opportunities in aerospace, military vehicles and defence electronics. It will also look to expand co-operation between the two countries' militaries.

Poroshenko said in a press briefing, "The agreement will significantly broaden our opportunities on military-technical, defence and logistics co-operation."

Ukraine puts forces near Crimean border on full combat alert
Aug 11, 2016675

Ukraine has put its armed forces on full combat alert.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says he has ordered the army to be put on combat alert on the de-facto border with Crimea and the line of contact in eastern Ukraine.

Poroshenko’s statement on Thursday comes after Russia accused Ukraine of plotting terrorist attacks in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula that Russia annexed in March 2014 following a hastily called referendum.

The Russian intelligence agency FSB says its officer and an army soldier were killed over the weekend in two separate incidents while fending off what Moscow described as a series of attacks by Ukrainian “saboteurs.”

Fighting in eastern Ukraine between government troops and Russian-backed separatists has claimed more than 9,500 lives since it began in 2014. But there have not been any reports of disturbances on Ukraine’s de-facto border with Crimea.

Ukrainian Air Force Receives Four Modified MiG-29 Airframes
(Source: Defence24.com Poland; posted August 17, 2016)
The Ukrainian air force’s 114th Tactical Aviation Brigade, based in Ivano-Frankiwsk, has received six combat aircraft – four MiG-29s and two L-39C jet trainers – which were refurbished and upgraded at state-owned facilities. (D24.com photo)
The Ukrainian Air Force has received four overhauled MiG-29 airframes, along with two L-39 jet-trainers. All four aircraft have been delivered to the 114th Tactical Aviation Brigade, stationed in Ivano-Frankivsk.

According to the Ukrainian media, the base of the 114th Tactical Aviation Brigade in Ivano-Frankiwsk has received six combat aircraft which underwent general overhauls and some modernization works at the state-owned facilities. Here we are referring to four MiG-29 front-line fighters and two L-39C jet-trainers.

Besides the new paint schemes and lifetime-extending overhauls, the jets also underwent works, the aim of which was to modify the avionics and armament, within the scope expanding the effectiveness of the aforesaid systems. This is especially applicable in case of the air-to-ground attack capabilities involving the unguided rockets and guns.

When it comes to the avionics, the changes pertaining to the MiG-29 fighter aircraft covered, above all, the modern flight recorders and navigation systems, including the GPS navigation. Moreover, transponders and communication suites have been replaced with their ICAO standards-compliant counterparts.

The works were being executed by the Ukrainian state facilities belonging to the Ukroboronprom company, including the Odessa Aviation Facility, Chuguev-based CARZ company, or by the Kharkiv-based FED company.

Strengthening The Ukrainian Army
(Source: U.S Army; issued Aug 21, 2016)
YAVORIV, Ukraine ----The Ukrainian army, with the assistance of U.S. and multinational partners, continues to strive to improve the capability and capacity within its armed forces. Approximately 20 Ukrainian cadre recently completed their first rotation training Ukrainian Soldiers on individual combat skills at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center.

The training is part of the ongoing operations of the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine. The JMTG-U mission is focused on building a sustainable, enduring combat training center here. Part of this mission includes building training capacity quickly through the consolidation and resourcing of dedicated training cadre.

These instructors are the first group of cadre trained on conducting the first six modules of a nine-week rotational training set. The modules include weapons training, land navigation, combat lifesaving skills, and section live-fire. Soldiers of 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division certified the instructors by observing and gauging their ability to put the six modules into action and effectively train other Ukrainian Soldiers.

Spc. Brett Jones, a rifleman assigned to 6-8 Cav., is a fourth generation veteran and is excited to be able to continue the family tradition. Jones said that he is optimistic about training alongside the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

"Every time we go out and observe the Ukrainian Soldiers, they do the training to a T," said Jones. "They are very hands on with the training and make sure each Soldier knows how to effectively do each task to standard."

Staff Sgt. Alex Fernandez, a squad leader and instructor assigned to 6-8 Cav. spent two years as a drill sergeant and was able to use the skills he acquired to ensure the Ukrainian instructors were fully up to speed on training their Soldiers on individual tasks.

"They have always been comfortable teaching the Soldiers, but now I feel they are more confident with their teaching techniques," said Fernandez. "They have built that trust and bond with the Soldiers and they listen to the instructors when given instructions."

After the training has been conducted, the Soldiers from 6-8 Cav pull the Ukrainian instructors aside and brief them on their performance during the exercise.

According to Jones the Ukrainian Soldiers respond well when they receive praise, validation and feedback from the multinational force trainers. "They do training by the book and listen to recommendations that we make," he said.

1st Lt. Taras Tanailov, an instructor assigned to the Combat Training Center mentored the newly graduated Ukrainian instructors over the past three weeks. Tanailov has been with the instructors since they were certified to teach and observed the progression in their ability to train Soldiers.

Tanailov said that over the last few weeks his instructors had learned a lot about leading and training Soldiers. He said that they are more confident in the training, which allows them to be more effective leaders.

Cpt. Abdullah H. Clark, company commander for Charlie Troop, 6-8 Cav., had the opportunity to observe the Ukrainian instructors and was able to view military tactics from a different perspective.

"So far I've learned a different method of every aspect of military affairs from logistics to tactics to unofficial dynamics of the social system," said Clark. "They have taught me a different way to run things other than the way we normally do for our military."

The ultimate goal of the JMTG-U is to establish a sustainable Combat Training Center staffed and led completely by the Ukrainian military.

"I think if we left here today, they would do everything they need to do to train their military," said Jones. "I definitely think they are doing a good job."

Now that the initial six modules are complete, the Ukrainian instructors will move on to learn the next two modules, which is a milestone for the JMTG-U. This marks the first time Ukrainian instructors will learn modules seven and eight, which include squad, section and platoon collective tasks.

A new earthmoving vehicle is set to enter service with the Ukraine armed forces Corps of Engineers built by AutoKraz in partnership with Kryukov Railway Car Building Works (Kremenchug), AutoKraz announced on 29 August.

The vehicle has been based on the Kraz-5233НЕ AWD armoured chassis, with an armoured cab, engine compartment and fuel tank designed to meet specifications.

The vehicle will be used to dig trenches in various soils, fill excavations and clear sites.

In order to operate in temperatures from –40°C to +40°C and relative humidity of 98 percent, the vehicle has a radiator with high heat transfer. Manoeuvrability has been improved by the wheelbase being shortened from 5000mm to 4000mm. Modifications have been made to the vehicle frame to make it possible to attach custom-built digging equipment and an earthmoving blade.

According to AutoKraz the vehicle has undergone six months of testing at the proving grounds of the Ukraine armed forces.

President of Ukraine says he does not exclude full scale invasion by Russia

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko has not ruled out the possibility of a full-scale Russia’s invasion “in all directions”.

“Ukraine will continue to need strong international support in the fight against Russian aggression,” Poroshenko said at the opening of the September parliament session.

“But securing this support is becoming increasingly difficult for our diplomats due to different objective and subjective factors.”

The conflict in Donbass has killed more than 9,500 people since separatist violence erupted two years ago, and a ceasefire agreement is routinely violated.

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko
Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko
Tensions between Ukraine and Russia spiked in August after Russia accused Ukraine of planning attacks in Crimea.

As a result, while Poroshenko said that Ukraine is now safer than it was a year ago, he also warned that a full-scale invasion from Russia could not be ruled out.

“Over the course of the next year, political forces could come to power as a result of elections in several European countries that may not be extremist, but are inclined to compromise with the Kremlin,” Poroshenko said.

“Europe still speaks with one voice, but there are also countries where the Russian accent is already too audible.”

In the case of a serious escalation, a martial law and another wave of mobilization can be declared in a combat zone, Poroshenko noted.

According to the President, some 45,000 military have gone to a contract service in the army since the beginning of the year. This allowed not to declare a new mobilization.

Joining NATO remains our strategic objective. This is unchangeable as Pole Star in the sky, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko said on Tuesday.

Ukraine has successfully conducted the test launch of the new model of a missile and the exclusive video was released by SE “SKDB “LUCH” on a page on Facebook.

According to Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov, “all missile launches were conducted very successfully”.

“Unlike Russian analogs, Ukrainian missiles are guided and, therefore, hit the targets more efficiently and accurately, which was proved during the tests”, – Secretary of the NSDC of Ukraine emphasized.

Mr. Turchynov stressed that in addition to missile launches, “the test of the multiple rocket launcher control system created by Ukrainian producers and ensuring qualitative control and accurate orientation of a missile at the target” was also carried out.

Video and pictures released on Internet, show that the new missile was launched from a MAZ-543 self-propelled launcher, which is the same vehicle used by the BM-30 Smerch Multiple Launch Rocket System(MLRS).

The Vlha missile uses a GPS-based inertial guidance and correction system, created by the Kiev-based Luch Design Office.

devraient fournir l'an prochain.

Ukraine carries out control flight tests of midrange anti-aircraft missiles

Dec 1, 2016

The Ukrainian Armed Forces carry out a practical phase of control flight tests of midrange anti-aircraft missiles in Kherson oblast. Chief of General Staff General V.Muzhenko observes the tests.

This event is aimed at gaining combat experience of use of anti-aircraft missile systems, inspecting quality of renewed ammunition, working out practical tasks with combat and simulated launches of anti-aircraft guided missiles.

All security measures were taken before the tests. The missile tests are carried out in the airspace of Ukraine over the open sea in accordance with all the international norms.

Russia has put air defence units on alert and deployed warships along the west coast of Crimea after the Ukrainian military fired surface to air missiles over the Black Sea in a show of strength military that has riled the Kremlin.

The Russian government, which annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, has called the drills a “dangerous precedent” and initially threatened to shoot down the missile.

Ukraine commissions two new Gurza-M patrol craft as it rebuilds naval combat capability

Key Points
•Ukraine set to commission first two of nine planned Gurza-M patrol craft
•Navy is seeking to re-constitute its force in the wake of the 2014 Crimea crisis

planned, and up to 18 could be built. (Ukrainian Navy)

The Ukrainian Navy will commission two Project 58155 Gurza-M missile-capable riverine patrol boats on 6 December, following lengthy acceptance trials designed to resolve some technical challenges.

The commissionings are part of a wider Ukrainian programme to rebuild its naval force structure after the loss of nearly two-thirds of its fleet during Russia's annexation of Crimea in March 2014. The navy is moving forward with the aim of creating what is termed a 'mosquito fleet' - made up of around 30 small- and medium-sized combatants - at the centre of a new naval force structure it aims to have in place by 2020. Ukrainian sources say the current fleet numbers around 40 vessels in total, the majority of which are auxiliary platforms.

Designed by Ukraine's State Research and Design Shipbuilding Centre, construction of the two 23 m, 56-tonne patrol boats vessels - Akkerman (U 174) and Berdyansk (U 175) - took place at the Leninska Kuznya shipyard in Kiev. Work began in 2012, although funding challenges meant that build was not completed until late 2015.

The vessels are armed with two BM-5M.01 Katran-M gun-missile systems.

Along with these two craft, four more Gurza-M boats are in build, and another three are on order.

The country is also building two 24.3 m, 54.5-tonne Project 58181 Centaur-class combat boats that are fitted with guns, and grenade and rocket launchers, and are capable of transporting up to 32 troops. These combat boats are currently under construction at Leninska Kuznya.

The 'mosquito fleet' concept is viewed as a more cost- and time-effective option for maintaining presence at sea, according to Captain Andrii Ryzhenko, the navy's deputy chief of staff, when compared to a more traditional naval force structure.

Feb 22, 2017

The Ukrainian Government intends to allocate USD 330 Million (9 billion hryvnias) for the development and purchase of new armament and military equipment for the Ukrainian troops.

It was stated by the Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko at the operational meeting of the administrative board of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“Defense order is pretty modest in terms of global prices and expenditures of the aggressor. But it is pretty tangible for the Ukrainian budget and Ukrainian taxpayers,” the Head of State added.

According to the President, a priority for this year is the restoration of a reliable air defense system, creation of a powerful missile shield of Ukraine, accumulation of combat potential of aviation, artillery, production of ammunition, development of telecommunication systems, automated systems of command and control and intelligence.

The Head of State instructed to accelerate the reform of food supply and complete it by 2019.

Over 500 trainings were held in Ukraine in 2016 with involvement of foreign instructors. The President thanked our foreign partners for their assistance in the formation of a new Ukrainian army. “This is a different army already. It wages war differently. This is a bright example of our efficient cooperation,” Petro Poroshenko noted.

The President informed that during multinational exercises in 2017 major efforts will be focused on improving combat readiness of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and increasing the interoperability of our military units with units of the states-members of NATO.

The Head of State emphasized that Ukraine unconditionally supports and welcomes NATO’s efforts to strengthen the eastern flank of the Alliance, protect its member-states from hostile encroachment and attacks of the Russian Federation. “In Munich, I once again had a conversation with President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of Poland Andrzej Duda and leaders of other countries where these troops are located. I can say that these countries really welcome these efforts,” Petro Poroshenko said.
