178 FW deploys for Exercise Load Diffuser 2010

April 29, 2010 (by SSgt. Tina Maddock) - Approximately 100 members of the 178th Fighter Wing from Springfield, Ohio deployed in support of the Load Diffuser Exercise 2010, April 22 - 27 to Kecskemet, Hungary.

The LD2010 is a joint exercise with the Hungarian Joint Force Command. The exercise aims to sharpen the combat capabilities of the participating forces.

United States Air Force pilots and Hungarian Air Force pilots will have the opportunity to engage in different air-to-air combat scenarios. The aircraft involved are the USAF F-16 Fighting Falcon, Hungarian Air Force JAS-39 Gripen, MiG-29 Fulcrum and the Mi-24 Hind.

"It is one of the few training opportunities they (the Hungarian Air Force) have to fly against a larger formation," said Lt. Col. Nathan Thomas, the LD2010 project officer. "It is to help improve their skills and a way to improve ours," said Colonel Thomas.

The USAF and Hungarian Air Force pilots will be working with the Hungarian joint terminal air controllers to direct aircraft against simulated ground targets, said Colonel Thomas. The Hungarian JTACs were trained in the United States.

Colonel Thomas said the Hungarian Mi-24 helicopters will be working with the USAF and Hungarian Air Force to conduct ground base air defense exercises.

In addition to practicing air combat maneuvers against the F-16, Hungarian Air Force servicemembers will be trained to work with the F-16. Airmen from the 178FW will educate aircraft maintainers and fire fighters from the Hungarian Air Force on operating an F-16.

The Hungarian Air Force welcomed the 178FW with an opening ceremony April 26. The ceremony was attended by both USAF and Hungarian Air Force servicemembers which kicked off the Load Diffuser Exercise 2010.

The exercise is scheduled to last two weeks.

Des Hongrois dans la TF Takuba en 2022

La Hongrie souhaite intégrer la Task Force Takuba l’an prochain. Jusqu’à 80 militaires des forces spéciales seraient déployés sur le théâtre sahélien au premier trimestre 2022, selon un projet de loi soumis la semaine dernière à l’approbation des parlementaires.

L’enjeu est double pour le ministre délégué chargé des relations avec le Parlement et vice-ministre de la Défense Németh Szilárd, venu présenter le projet de loi mardi dernier aux parlementaires. « D’une part, participer aux missions étrangères est une occasion unique pour acquérir de l’expérience opérationnelle (…). D’autre part, nos responsabilités découlant des engagements pris avec nos alliés l’exigent dans l’intérêt de la sécurité collective », a-t-il déclaré, ajoutant que « la Hongrie s’est engagée à maintenir la paix et la stabilité, Takuba sert également cet objectif, notre intérêt national est donc d’y participer ».

Le gouvernement hongrois a d’ores et déjà autorisé l’envoi dès cette année d’une unité d’une vingtaine de militaires chargés de préparer l’arrivée du contingent principal. Celui-ci serait relevé tous les quatre mois, laissant à la Hongrie l’opportunité d’ajuster son effort en fonction des besoins opérationnels de Takuba et des capacités disponibles.

Cet engagement « est tout à fait important, c’est un acte fort que nous apprécions en tant que tel, parce que le Sahel fait partie de notre frontière sud, et nous devons assurer là aussi la lutte contre le terrorisme », avait déclaré le ministre français de l’Europe et des Affaires étrangères Jean-Yves Le Drian, lors d’un déplacement le 10 septembre à Budapest.

D’autres contributions sont attendues dans les prochains mois, chacune renforçant sensiblement les 600 militaires fournis par la France, la Suède, l’Italie, l’Estonie, la République tchèque, la Belgique, le Portugal et les Pays-Bas.

La Norvège enverra d’ici peu un « petit nombre de soldats » intégrés dans le détachement suédois. Une petite centaine de militaires danois rejoindront le dispositif en janvier prochain, déploiement avalisé fin mai par le parlement local. Une cinquantaine de militaires roumains sont également attendus au dernier trimestre 2021.

La République tchèque, partenaire de la première heure, projette de « prolonger son engagement au sein de Takuba et d’y apporter de nouvelles capacités », annonçait le ministère des Armées jeudi dernier, en marge d’un déplacement de Florence Parly à Prague.

L’annonce hongroise intervient à un moment charnière dans l’évolution de l’opération Barkhane. Celle-ci se transforme depuis plusieurs semaines pour reposer à terme sur trois piliers, le premier étant un partenariat de combat fondé sur la montée en puissance de Takuba.

Modernisation des Gripen C/D hongrois !



La Hongrie se dirige en direction d’une seconde mise à jour de sa flotte d’avions de combat Saab Gripen C/D. Le ministère hongrois de la Défense a publié des détails concernant la rénovation prévue.

Le communiqué de presse du ministère hongrois de la Défense précise que la flotte d’avions de combat Gripen C/D au standard MS19 sera portée au niveau MS20. Cela comprendra le remplacement des missiles courte portée Raytheon AIM-9L « Sidewinder » avec le Diehl BGT Iris-T. De plus, le système modernisé permettra l’emplois du missile longue portée MBDA Meteor. qui viendra compléter les actuels Raytheon AIM-120C AMRAAM en service.

Avec l'acquisition de ces deux nouveaux missiles, l'armée de l'air hongroise retrouvera une capacité perdue avec le retrait des avions à réaction MiG-29 de fabrication russe et de ses missiles R-73, à savoir le viseur monté sur casque et la capacité de verrouiller la cible après que le missile a été largué.

Mais la mise en place du standard MS20 sur el Gripen C/D permettra également de nouvelles fonctions. Une nouvelle architecture électronique pour faire face à l’évolution des menaces et de la guerre électronique à venir. L’arrivée du radar PS-05 Mk4 à antenne mécanique offrant 70 de champs de détection en plus. Une nouvelle configuration et un nouveau « back-end » complètent et permettent de renforcer les performances en matière de plage de fonctionnement et de détection. Le système englobe l’arrivée d’une amélioration de l’autoprotection, l’installation du GCA Ground Collision Avoidance System, de nouveaux équipements de protection (CBRN) qui permettent un vol dans une zone contaminée, diverses sécurités en matière de cyberguerre, l’amélioration de liaison électronique Link16 (OTAN) et Link TAU (liaison Gripen), amélioration de la liaison au sol CAA/JTAC et des fonctions de reconnaissance étendues.

Rappel

La Hongrie exploite actuellement 14 Gripen C/D dans le cadre d'un contrat de location avec la société suédoise Saab Aviation qui doit expirer en 2026, ce qui signifie que l'avion deviendra la propriété de l'armée de l'air hongroise. Fin 2001, le gouvernement hongrois a signé un contrat portant sur la location de 14 chasseurs Gripen (12 monoplaces et deux biplaces), permettant au pays de devenir une armée de l'air moderne de type occidental. En janvier 2005, le recyclage des premiers pilotes hongrois et du personnel au sol sélectionné a commencé à l'escadre F 7 de l'armée de l'air suédoise à Såtenäs. Au même moment, le premier Gripen hongrois sortait de la chaîne de production de Linköping, en Suède. Les cinq premiers chasseurs Gripen ont atterri sur la piste de la base aérienne de Kecskemét le 21 mars 2006. Le Gripen a ensuite été inspecté par le ministère hongrois de la Défense avant d'être officiellement remis au client lors d'une cérémonie qui s'est tenue le 30 mars 2006.

La Hongrie achète des L-39 Next Generation !

Aero Vodochody a signé un contrat pour  la livraison de 12 avions d'entraînement à réaction de type  L-39 Next Generation ainsi que les  services de soutien connexes avec le Commandement des forces de défense hongroises. Le premier avion sera livré au client en 2024, selon l’avionneur.

Le constructeur tchèque livrera les 12 appareils en deux versions, soit 8 en configuration d'entraînement et les 4 autres en configuration de reconnaissance. La configuration de reconnaissance est équipée d'un système EO/IR pour l'identification et le suivi d'objets fixes et mobiles au sol. Les deux parties ont convenu de ne pas divulguer le montant du contrat. 

L’Aero Vodochody L-39 NG

Le L-39NG est alimenté avec un nouveau moteur Williams FJ44-4M. L'avion a effectué son premier vol le 14 septembre 2015 avec notamment une nouvelle centrale électrique. Le L-39NG est doté du système Genesys Aerosystems qui comprend un nouvel affichage multifonctions (MFD) et un affichage tête haute (HUD). Le système comprend un système d'instruments de vol électroniques (EFIS) à vision synthétique, des niveleurs d'aile analogiques à faible coût, des systèmes numériques à trois axes avec directeur de vol et protection d'enveloppe, des écrans intelligents IDU-680, ADAHRS (Air Data, Attitude, and Heading Reference Système) et récepteur GPS.

Pour l’avionneur tchèque le L-39NG est un avion école moderne et efficace, conçu comme un système d'entraînement complet et unifié pour les forces aériennes modernes. Le L-39NG est basé sur le concept aérodynamique du célèbre L-39, mais utilise les dernières technologies. La nouvelle avionique de l'avion permettra de venir former les futurs pilotes d'avions de 4 ème et de 5 ème génération. Le L-39NG est équipé de cinq points de fixation pour des armes. L'avion dispose d'un large éventail de technologies de simulation, y compris l'intégration dans les centres de simulation tactique de haute technologie dans le but d'accroître l'efficacité de l'entraînement.

Pour Aero Vodochody le L-39NG est une solution moderne ayant un faible coût. Ce concept doit répondre aux besoins des Forces aériennes qui doivent régulièrement revoir les dépenses à la baisse.

At the György Klapka barracks located in the town of Tata in Hungary, the first SPH arrived on the night of August 10 and the second on the night of August 17. The artillery systems joined the MH 25th György Klapka Infantry Brigade’s 101st Artillery Division.

As recalled by Yusuf Cetiner, the PzH 2000s were delivered as part of a $1.8 billion contract signed on December 19, 2018, with Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) as part of the Hungarian Armed Forces’ (Magyar Honvédség) ground forces modernization process.

The contract calls for the delivery of 44 newly manufactured Leopard 2 A7+ main battle tanks and 24 newly manufactured PzH 2000 units. Hungary also ordered 12 used Leopard 2 A4 main battle tanks for training purposes, as well as a Leguan bridge layer tank from KMW’s stock, as part of the contract. Hungary received all 12 used Leopard 2 A4 main battle tanks in 2020 while the first delivery of 44 new Leopard 2A7+ tanks is expected to take place in June 2023. These systems will replace the country’s arsenal of outdated Soviet-era systems.

First KC-390 for Hungary on final assembly line


On 7 October 2022, Embraer released a photo of the first Embraer KC-390 Millenium for the Magyar Légierö (ML, Hungarian Air Force). The aircraft has serial 610 and this coincided with the artist impression that was released in November 2020.

On 17 november 2020, Scramble Magazine reported that the Hungarian government signed a contract for the purchase of two KC-390s with air-to-air refuelling (AAR) capability. The contract includes training of pilots and technicians, other services and support to strengthen the Hungarian Defence Forces.

According to the information Embraer is currently assembling the semi-wings on the aircraft's fuselage. Flight tests of the first aircraft will begin in the second half of 2023, with delivery taking place in the second quarter of 2024.

The second KC-390 for Hungary is scheduled to begin production in December 2022, thus maintaining the original schedule, and is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024.

The KC-390s destined for the Hungarian Air Force will be the first in the world with the Intensive Care Unit in its configuration, an essential feature for performing humanitarian missions.

In June 2022, Embraer and Aeroplex signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate on a project to qualify Aeroplex as an Embraer Authorized Service Center (EASC) in Hungary. The aim is to support and enable Aeroplex to provide maintenance for the Hungarian Defence Forces KC-390 Millennium aircraft.

On 15 October 2022, Rheinmetall handed over the first of a total of 209 KF41 Lynx infantry fighting vehicles to the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF). Just two years after the order was placed, Rheinmetall AG CEO Armin Papperger presented the key to Hungarian Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.

The handover took place during an oath-taking ceremony of new military service volunteers of the Hungarian Defence Forces at the Petöfi Sándor Barracks in Budapest. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also attended the ceremony. Lynx will become the backbone of Hungary's mechanised infantry forces.

"We are very proud to be able to deliver the first Lynx infantry fighting vehicle to our partner Hungary today," said Armin Papperger. "This is an important milestone. Lynx is the most versatile fighting vehicle of its class. In making this forward-looking procurement decision, Hungary’s top political and military officials have demonstrated leadership in moving Hungary at the forefront of European army technology and underlining the Hungarian government’s commitment as a reliable partner of its NATO allies, a policy which it is pursuing with systematic energy.”

In September 2020 the Hungarian Ministry of Defence awarded Rheinmetall an order to supply infantry fighting vehicles and related products and services with a total value of more than €2 billion. The holistic delivery package includes ammunition and logistics, as well as nine modern Buffalo armoured recovery vehicles, nine armoured vehicle launched bridges (AVLB) and 16 trucks. Hungary is the first NATO and EU member nation to receive Rheinmetall’s newly developed Lynx modular medium-weight combat system. This important contract represents a major breakthrough in the global defence market for the Düsseldorf-based technology group’s innovative new combat vehicle.

The KF41 Lynx for the HDF is delivered in seven variants: standard infantry fighting vehicles (IFV), command post, reconnaissance, joint fire observer, mortar carrier, field ambulance vehicles and driver training vehicles. The contract includes Rheinmetall products and services such as simulators, training and instruction, plus an initial supply of spare parts as well as maintenance support.  

The Lynx IFV is equipped with a manned 30mm Lance turret, as well as the integrated active protection system StrikeShield, both likewise developed by Rheinmetall.

A first batch of 46 Lynx vehicles will be delivered from Rheinmetall’s plants in Germany. By end of next year, Rheinmetall will start to deliver the remaining vehicles from their Hungarian plant. To this end, the Hungarian government and Rheinmetall agreed in August 2020 to establish a joint venture responsible for creating a Lynx production facility in Hungary. The state-of-the-art production facility for the innovative combat vehicle is currently being built in Zalaegerszeg as part of the ZALAZone industry complex.

The modern facility not only contributes to the preservation and further expansion of Hungarian capabilities in the development and production of modern combat vehicles, but also strengthens the local economy. The new Hungarian Rheinmetall colleagues are already working on the new Lynx vehicles in Germany, gaining valuable knowledge and skills that will support the transfer of know-how and technology.

Lynx – modular, flexible, future-proof


The Lynx concept embraces a complete vehicle family, consisting of a chassis module and flexible mission kits in numerous variants. This means that the basic vehicle can be configured as an infantry fighting vehicle, an air defence system, a command vehicle or a field ambulance. Moreover, switching from one configuration to another can be accomplished in a matter of hours. Thanks to the uniformity of the basic vehicle, the system will result in substantially lower lifecycle costs, while simultaneously letting military users adapt to changing tactical requirements and/or leverage new capabilities. Outstanding survivability, mobility and lethality characterize the Lynx, as do excellent growth potential, including in terms of its total weight.

The Lance turret operates enhanced sensor systems to fully exploit the capabilities of the integrated 30mm firing next-generation programmable kinetic energy time fused (KETF) ammunition and the modern Spike 2 LR anti-tank missile system. It provides a comprehensive engagement capability for symmetric and asymmetric threats.

Lynx and Lance are fully digitised and built on the NATO generic vehicle architecture (NGVA) enabling integration of the crew, the dismounts, and the vehicle into the wider battlefield network. Enhanced situational awareness enables rapid target detection or target handoff. Furthermore, it supports the integration of multi-spectral sensing capability including UAVs and loitering munitions for beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) target detection and engagement.

The Lynx combines the modularity of passive and active protection systems providing layered protection capability against prevalent battlefield threats. Lynx shields its occupants from the full spectrum of battlefield threats, including explosions, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), direct and indirect fire, cluster munitions and antitank guided missiles, as well as CBRN. With its hard-hitting combat effectiveness and excellent off-road mobility, the Lynx will give tomorrow’s armed forces a decisive edge in complex military operations at every level of intensity in all kinds of environments, overcoming multiple threats and securing favourable outcomes. Its spaciousness assures the operational effectiveness of its three crew members and up to eight infantrymen.

The digitalisation, as well as the modern physical design of the Lynx, ensure maximum performance against the threats of today and growth capabilities against the threats of tomorrow. The modular architecture offers growth capacities for payload, electrical power and processing capacities of the vehicle to enable seamless integration of enhanced mission equipment or realisation of special to role variants within a single vehicle family.

First Hungarian Air Force H225M


On 17 November 2022, the first Airbus Helicopters H225M destined for the Magyar Légierö (ML, Hungarian Air Force) took to the air at Marseille/Marignane on one of its first flights. The helicopter, still in primer, was registered as F-ZWDZ (construction number 3117).


On 14 December 2018, Airbus announced that the Hungarian Ministry of Defence ordered sixteen H225M multi-purpose helicopters, including training and support in a multi-million dollar contract.
The contract is part of the Hungarian Government ambitious ‘Zrinyi 2026’ armed forces modernisation programme. On 20 July 2021, Scramble Magazine reported on the assembly of the first of six Special Operations Force (SOF) H225Ms.


The H225Ms will replace the ageing Mi-17 helicopters operated by MH 86. 'Szolnok' Helicopter Ezred (MH 86.HE) at Szolnok. The new helicopters will be equipped with the HForce weapon management system as well as modern and advanced avionics, an advanced communications suit and a four axis autopilot. The night vision capable H225Ms will be used for transport, combat search and rescue, and special operations missions.

Hungarian Air Force receives its first two Airbus H225M helicopters

On July 18, as reported by Hungary Today, the Hungarian Defense Forces received their first two Airbus H225M helicopters at the Szolnok air base. The helicopters, configured as medium transport (Troop Transport Helicopter) aircraft and registered as 70 and 71, were warmly welcomed by the MH Kiss József 86th Helicopter Brigade.


The arrival of the two Airbus H225M helicopters, still registered in France and piloted by both French and Hungarian pilots, was greeted by various

These two helicopters were originally delivered by Airbus Helicopters in July from their production center in Marignane, France. The Ministry of Defense had placed an order for a total of 16 H225M helicopters as part of the Defense and Force Development Program.

The Hungarian military-type certification process for the H225M began in 2021, with a particular emphasis on tailoring the helicopter's configuration to meet the specific needs of the Hungarian military. In March 2022, the Ministry's experts visited the manufacturer and engaged in technical discussions with the team responsible for the design, production, and operation of the helicopter. Subsequently, type certification test flights were conducted on the helicopter with the manufacturer's identification number IRO 011 between February 28 and March 1, 2023.

The introduction of the H225M helicopters is intended to replace the aging fleet of Russian-made Mi-17 transport helicopters, which were a variant of the Mi-8. While the old Soviet-designed Mi-17 could accommodate up to 24 passengers and 3 crew members, the new Airbus H225M has the capacity to carry up to 28 passengers, depending on the amount of equipment onboard. Both the Mi-17 and the H225M have a similar cargo capacity of 4,000 kg. However, the H225M boasts superior performance with a maximum speed of 325 km/h and a range exceeding 820 km, compared to the Mi-17's maximum speed of approximately 250 km/h and a range of 620 km.

Powered by two powerful Makila 2A1 turboshaft engines, the H225M’s five-blade main rotor provides an exceptionally low vibration level, and the modular Spheriflex design for its rotor mechanical assemblies allows for lower maintenance. The helicopter’s outstanding 700 nautical mile range can be extended with air-to-air or hover in-flight refuelling capabilities.

The H225M’s four-axis dual-duplex automatic flight control system (AFCS) provides outstanding precision and stability; its upper modes integrate the engine limitations in all-engines operative (AEO) and one-engine inoperative (OEI) situations. The AFCS also includes SAR flight patterns, instrument flight rules (IFR) procedures, and automatic approaches – and also allows for fully automatic hovering, whatever the speed.

At a glance, the flight crew has access to all navigation and piloting data through the new glass cockpit that features four 10 x 8-inch enlarged displays, as well as ground proximity and traffic collision avoidance. Information as electronic warfare indications and alerts are automatically displayed only when necessary.

This enhanced configuration enables reduced crew workload with easier, faster and streamlined mission management (route preparation/modification/selection, digital map/navigation management). TINS and GPS (integrated navigation system and Global Positioning System) sensor redundancy enhances discrepancy management while providing a higher position accuracy.

As the most advanced member of Airbus’ military Super Puma/Cougar family, the 11-metric-tonne H225M has proven its reliability and durability in combat conditions and crisis areas that include Lebanon, Afghanistan, Chad, the Ivory Coast, the Central African Republic, Somalia, and Mali, while also supporting NATO-led operations in Libya. Additionally, the H225M is counted on as a force multiplier by France, Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Kuwait, Singapore, Thailand, and now Hungary.

La Hongrie notifie une importante commande de munitions rôdeuses HERO à l’allemand Rheinemetall

En mars 2022, et après avoir confirmé l’achat de 218 véhicules de combat d’infanterie KF41 Lynx [en plus de 44 chars de combat Leopard 2A7+ et 24 obusiers PzH2000], la Hongrie notifia au groupe allemand Rheinmetall une importante commande de munitions de différents types [obus de 30, de 120 et de 155 mm, cartouches de 12,7 et 7,62 mm, etc.] pour une valeur de « plusieurs centaines de millions d’euros ».

À l’époque, le Pdg de Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger, s’était dit  » extrêmement honoré » de la confiance témoignée par la Hongrie. « Nous sommes très impatients de travailler intensivement avec notre client dans un autre domaine clé des capacités militaires », avait-il ajouté, sans plus de précisions.

En attendant d’en savoir plus sur ce « domaine clé », le ministère hongrois de la Défense s’est de nouveau tourné vers Rheinmetall pour se procurer, cette fois, des munitions rôdeuses [ou téléopérées] de type HERO pour une centaine de million d’euros. C’est en effet ce qu’a annoncé le groupe allemand, ce 20 juillet. « Les contrats ont été signés et les livraisons commenceront en 2024 pour se terminer en 2025 », a-t-il précisé.

Pour rappel, la gamme de munitions rôdeuses HERO a été développée par l’entreprise israélienne UVision, laquelle a noué un partenariat stratégique avec Rheinmetall afin d’en faciliter la commercialisation sur le marché européen.


Dans son communiqué, Rheinemetall n’a pas précisé le type de munition HERO retenu par l’armée hongroise. La gamme proposée par UVision en compte six, la plus simple étant la HERO-30, laquelle a une autonomie de 30 minutes pour un rayon d’action supérieur à 15 km. La plus élaborée est la HERO-1250 qui a été conçu pour détruire des cibles « stratégiques » [avec une autonomie de 10 heures et une charge militaire de 50 kg pour un rayon d’action d’environ 200 km].

« Tous les systèmes Hero sont conçus pour des conditions de combat exigeantes, y compris pour des environnements sans réception GPS ou dans lesquels les communications radio sont interrompues. […] Ils ont déjà prouvé leur efficacité contre […] les véhicules légers en mouvement, les chars, les fortifications de campagne ennemies, les systèmes de défense aérienne et les infrastructures critiques », fait valoir Rheinmetall.

Le premier pays européen à s’en être procuré est l’Italie, via une commande de près de 4 millions d’euros passée au profit du Comando interforze per le Operazioni delle Forze Speciali [COFS – Commandement conjoint des forces spéciales].
