Croatia, Slovenia to pursue joint fighter deal

Croatia and Slovenia have agreed to form a new working group to study the possible joint procurement of at least 12 multirole fighters.

Croatia's remaining MiG-21s will reach the end of their service lives by the end of 2011. Two of its aircraft were lost in a recent mid-air collision, which reduced its fleet of the type to 10, but that includes only four operational examples.

The nation had postponed a new fighter tender due to budget constraints, with the Eurofighter Typhoon, Lockheed Martin F-16, RSK MiG-35 and Saab Gripen having been in contention. It is unclear when a decision could be made under the new bilateral arrangement.

The Slovenian air force has nine Pilatus PC-9Ms modified to carry unguided rockets and pod-housed machine guns. They are also wired to carry Raytheon AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missiles, although Italy now provides air policing cover for the nation.

A joint Croatian/Slovenian air force could be established at the latter's Cerklje air base, with co-operation between the NATO members to also possibly be extended to a joint transport acquisition.

Croatia looking to give military jets facelift

The Croatian Ministry of Defence has invited representatives from Russian fighter aircraft manufacturers to evaluate whether any of Croatia's fighter planes could be modernized.

Representatives of the Russian company MiG and Rosoboronexport agency will be coming to Croatia to evaluate the condition of several 20-year-old planes that they manufactured. Croatia is looking to either modernize its current stock or buy some new or used planes.

Eight planes should be modernized according to the Ministry of Defense's plan, costing the state some 20 million dollars. Considering that these planes are more than 30 years old, only the manufacturer can decide whether they can be "refurbished." If the Russian experts say this is not possible, Croatia might look to purchases several used jet fighter planes from India.

These planes cost three million Euros and can be used for another 10 years.

Currently Croatia has eight planes that should be taken out of commission this year according to the plan, but force commander Vlado Bagaric claims that they are usable until the end of 2013.

Germany offers Croatia 20 aging F-4 Phantom fighter jets

ZAGREB, Croatia - Croatian state TV is reporting that Germany has offered Croatia 20 aging F-4 Phantom fighter planes to replace its even older MIG-21 jets.
Croatia's HRT television says the twin-engine American-made fighters can fly for another couple of years before they are retired. But the six Soviet-made MIGs in the Croatian air force fleet have an even shorter flight span left.
HRT says the Croatian government has not yet answered to the German free-of-charge offer for the McDonnell Douglas Phantoms, which entered service with the U.S. Air Force in 1960 and have long been retired by the German air force.
HRT says that if the offer is not accepted, Croatia could soon find itself without jets to protect its skies.

Germany has offered Croatia a possible deal to acquire 20 of its McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom fighters, as Zagreb nears a decision on how to replace its remaining Soviet-era Mikoyan MiG-21s. Just two of these are available at any given time to protect its airspace.

Croatia must retire its eight MiG-21bisD fighters and two MiG-21UMD trainers by November 2013, while the German air force plans to phase out its last ICE upgrade-standard Phantoms by the end of the same year.

Cash-strapped Croatia is considering whether to launch a competition for a new supersonic fighter, or move for an interim solution that would allow it to slip an expensive purchase by around five years.

Alternatively, it could opt to retire its MiG-21s with no replacement capability and request that NATO cover its air defence requirements until its financial situation improves.

Flown from its 91 AFB at Pula, Croatia's MiG-21s were produced between 1972 and 1980 and upgraded with NATO-compatible systems by Romania's Aerostar in 1993.

Wittmund-based Fighter Wing 71 is the German air force's sole remaining F-4F unit, with the type flown by its 711 and 712 squadrons. Two of the aircraft are providing quick reaction alert cover for NATO members Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania from the latter's Siauliai air base, with the commitment to end on 28 April.

Germany's Phantoms accumulated more than 5,000 flight hours last year, but use of the type will be reduced to 3,000h in 2011, 1,800h in 2012 and 900h in 2013.

Croatian Navy celebrated its 20th anniversary today. The President and the Prime Minister were in attendance, as well as numerous senior officers, foreign diplomats and military attaches, family members of servicemen and members of the general public. The President reminded everyone of the Croatian Navy's heroic fight against the JNA agressor and the successful defnese of the Croatian sea, islands and coast which contributed immesurably to the ultimate victory. He lay a wreath into the sea from the missile boat Petar Krešimir IV in memory of the 54 Croatian sailors who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Prime Minister repeated the huge contribution of the Navy to the establishment of a free Republic of Croatia and went on to say that Croatian shipyards will soon be employed to build new warships for the Navy.
