Spanish Air Force to decommission Mirage F1 fleet in 2013
Whilst the French Air Force is currently using the plane as a reconnaissance and attack platform in the Mali Air War, the Spanish Air Force is about to decommission the Dassault Mirage F1.
The Chief of the Spanish Air Force Staff (JEMA), Air General Francisco Javier García Arnaiz, recently reported that this year they would “eliminate three systems,” those that already have substitutes: the C-212 Aviocar and Fokker F-27 in the SAR Service, and the Mirage F1 fighters.
In the latter case, the Eurofighter will replace it completely when it reaches the initial operational capability in the 14th Wing Air Base in Los Llanos (Albacete).
The acquisition of the French fighters by Spain in 1972 was due by the constant interference of the United States regarding the use of Spanish Air Force’s U.S. military equipment, especially in the case of the F-86 Sabre and T-33 Shooting Star jets in the conflict of Sidi Ifni (Morocco). With the acquisition of the Mirage F1, the Spanish government marked the end of dependence on diplomatic vetoes.
In 1975 a 1st batch of 15 Mirage F1 C(E) arrived to Los Llanos Air Base in Albacete. Designated C.14, the planes were assigned to 141 Squadron, the first of the newly created 14th Wing.
The F1 C was an all-weather interceptor, equipped with a Thomson-CSF Cyrano IV monopulse radar and a limited secondary ground attack capability. Initially, the aircraft was armed with two internal DEFA 553 30mm cannons and Matra R530 medium-range air-to-air missiles.
The Spanish Air Force’s Mirage F1 CE suffered modifications that allowed integration with American AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles.
In the second half of 1976 a 2nd batch of planes arrived and two years later a final 3th batch which included 6 two-seater F1 BE and 24 of the most advanced single-seat F1 EE was delivered.
The F1E had an upgraded equipment with a new computer data, Head-up Display (HUD), SAGEM-Kearfott inertial platform, digital computer updated Cyrano IV radar and a fixed refuelling probe.
With this new batch, Spanish Air Force could create the 142 Squadron. The most advanced F1EE went to the 46th Wing based in Gando, Canary Islands.
In all, Spain has acquired 91 Mirage F1. 73 units initially purchased (45 F1 CE, 22 F1 EE and 6 F1 BE) plus 5 second hand units purchased from France and 13 second hand units also purchased to Qatar.
Mid-’90s, 51 single-seaters and 4 double-seaters were upgraded to F1 M version. They had a number of improvements including intelligent 26″ HUDs with integrated radar, HOTAS system, modernized Cyrano IVM radar for accurate ground-attack capability in four different modes, Night Vision Goggles compatibility, inertial navigator Sagem ULISS 47 and AIM-9 JULI Sidewinder compatibility among others.
From August 2006, Spain dispatched three Mirage F1 M fighters to Lithuania’s First Air Base in Zokniai/Šiauliai International Airport for a 4 months deployment as part of NATO’s 10th “Air Police” patrol mission within Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia’s territorial airspace, being scrambled twice to intercept undisclosed intruders.
Nicknamed ‘La abuela’ (Grandmother) by the Spanish pilots, the Mirage F1 has been an active member of the annual NATO Tiger Meet since 1986. From this year, the state-of-the-art Eurofighter Typhoon will take that role within the 142 Squadron.

Dans le cadre du remplacement de ses six frégates lance-missiles du type américain O.H. Perry (FFG 7), l’Armada doit disposer d’une nouvelle classe de bâtiments de combat. Le désarmement des Santa Maria (version espagnole des FFG 7, aussi appelée F-80), mises en service entre 1986 et 1994, est en effet prévu entre 2025 et 2030. Il n’y a donc pas encore urgence mais Navantia travaille déjà sur ce futur projet majeur pour l’industrie espagnole. Les nouvelles frégates devraient se distinguer par leur furtivité, que l’Armada souhaite très poussée. Suivant les premières spécifications de la marine espagnole, Navantia avait dévoilé, fin 2010, un premier design, baptisé F2M2 (Future Frigate Multi Missions) et également appelé F-110, présenté comme pouvant servir de base aux études menées dans le cadre du futur programme. Longue de 140 mètres pour une largeur de 30 mètres, la F2M2 se base sur une plateforme de 5000 tonnes dotée d’une coque trimaran sur le tiers arrière. Cette solution, s’inspirant des Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) américains de la classe Independence, offre une grande surface à la plateforme hélicoptère, tout en améliorant la stabilité. Extrêmement furtif, ce design est dépourvu de mâts, radars et systèmes de communication étant intégrés dans une grande superstructure se prolongeant vers l’arrière par un hangar pour deux hélicoptères. L’armement visible comprend une tourelle de 76mm et 32 cellules pour missiles à lancement vertical, alors que la propulsion est assurée par des hydrojets, comme les LCS américains.
Depuis, Navantia a travaillé sur une autre solution. Il y a quelques semaines, le site Poderio Militar a diffusé des images d’un nouveau design baptisé F-111. Un projet moins ambitieux en termes de gabarit puisque qu’il s’agit d’un bâtiment d’environ 4000 tonnes, situé entre les quatre nouveaux patrouilleurs hauturiers du type BAM/Meteoro (94 mètres, 2840 tonnes) et les frégates lance-missiles du type F-100/Alvaro de Bazan (146.7 mètres, 6000 tonnes), dont la sixième et dernière unité vient d'être achevée. Mais ce design monocoque demeure toujours marqué par les impératifs de furtivité. Le nouveau modèle présente, comme la F2M2, des capacités de défense aérienne importantes, avec un radar à antennes planes de type SPY-1F (système Aegis), mais une vocation non pas de protection d’une vaste zone, mais plutôt d’une bulle locale. Il serait en tous cas suffisant pour couvrir une unité précieuse de type porte-aéronefs ou bâtiment de projection.
La F-111 est présentée avec, sur la plage avant, 16 cellules de lancement vertical pour missiles surface-air et, dans des rampes inclinées intégrées à la structure devant la passerelle, 8 missiles antinavire. On notera aussi l’installation, sur chaque côté de la plateforme hélicoptère, de deux ensembles comprenant chacun 16 cellules, probablement pour des missiles surface-air à courte portée. A moins que les capacités antiaériennes soient concentrées sur l’arrière et les cellules de proue réservées au lancement de missiles de croisière. L’artillerie comprend à l’avant une tourelle carénée avec un affut de moyen calibre (57mm ou plutôt 76mm), deux canons télé-opérés (20 ou 30mm) sur le toit du hangar hélicoptère (conçu pour abriter une machine de type Seahawk) et deux mitrailleuses au dessus de la passerelle. Alors que ce bâtiment serait, en outre, doté de solides moyens de lutte anti-sous-marine, sa propulsion aurait une architecture classique sur deux lignes d'arbres mais la vitesse pourrait être très importante puisqu’on évoque, en Espagne, une allure maximale de 35 nœuds.
Un programme à préparer dans un contexte budgétaire très dur
Pour l’heure, il ne s’agit là que d’études réalisées suivant les premiers souhaits exprimés par la marine espagnole. Mais ces travaux donnent déjà une idée des différentes options proposées à l’Armada par Navantia. Alors que ce programme est crucial pour l’avenir du groupe naval, celui-ci devra non seulement tenir compte des spécifications techniques requises, mais également développer un nouveau bâtiment avec des contraintes de coûts très fortes. Car les finances du ministère espagnol de la Défense sont étrillées par la situation économique du pays. D’ailleurs, en raison de restrictions budgétaires, deux des six unités de la classe Santa Maria devraient être mises en réserves.

Euh les Mirages F-1 sont en bout de vie, c'est des avions de plus de 40 ans!! Que ferait le Maroc avec des trucs pareils?

Following the two NH90 GSPA prototypes manufactured in Marignane (France), which are currently in Spain for the testing and certification campaign of the Spanish version, the NH90 GSPA03 will be the first helicopter to be delivered to the Spanish Army Airmobile Force (FAMET) in 2013 under the contract signed in 2006.
This represents a major milestone for Spain, which now assumes a role as a helicopter manufacturer together with its partners, France and Germany. Eurocopter España’s site in Albacete will be fully involved in the entire life cycle for these helicopters, from the design stage through to flight testing and certification, component manufacture, the final assembly line and integrated support.
The NH90 program, promoted by the Spanish Secretariat of Defense through the Directorate-General of Armament and Equipment (DGAM), is the first to supply all three branches of the Spanish armed forces. It will provide Spain’s military with an advanced helicopter transport system and associated technology, with Spanish participation not only in the manufacture of the helicopter itself but also in other areas such as installation of the electronic warfare systems, simulation equipment, automated test benches and engine assembly.
Produced in two basic versions – the Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH) and NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH) – this 11-metric-ton class rotary-wing aircraft provides a common platform for army, navy and air force roles, enabling countries to rationalize their helicopter fleets while also organizing training and support on a larger scale, with flexible management of personnel and equipment. Its large cabin, rapid access and quick role-change capability ensures mission flexibility for multiple operational scenarios.
To date, a total of 529 NH90s have been ordered by 14 nations, of which 418 are for the Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH) version. Six NH90 final assembly lines are now operational in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland and Australia under direction of the pan-European NHIndustries industrial organization comprising Eurocopter (62.5%), AgustaWestland (32%) and Fokker Aerostructures (5.5%).
136 NH90s have been delivered to the armed forces of customer nations and the helicopter has logged more than 31,000 flight hours, including service in conflict zones such as Afghanistan.
Established in 1992, the Franco-German-Spanish Eurocopter Group is a division of EADS, a world leader in aerospace and defense-related services. The Eurocopter Group employs approximately 22,000 people. In 2012, Eurocopter confirmed its position as the world’s No. 1 helicopter manufacturer with a turnover of 6.3 billion Euros, orders for 469 new helicopters and a 38 percent market share in the civil and parapublic sectors.

(BRUXELLES2) L’avion C-130 avec 30 premiers militaires de l’armée de l’air espagnole sont arrivés à 16h10 samedi (26 janvier) à l’aéroport de Dakar (Sénégal) . Une vingtaine de soldats devraient suivre dans le milieu de la semaine prochaine.
Le C-130 Hercules (T-10 en dénomination espagnole), de l’Ala 31, est parti à 7h15 de sa base de Saragosse. Après une escale pour intégrer du personnel et de l’équipement additionnels à la base aérienne de Moron de la Frontera, Sevilla, il a évité le territoire marocain, survolant la mer par les Canaries, le long de la côte de la Mauritanie, puis le Sénégal.
Pont aérien vers Bamako, mais pas de liaison inter-théâtres
Sur place, à Dakar, l’avion espagnol sera chargé de maintenir un pont aérien vers Bamako, capitale du Mali, pour le transport de troupes et de matériel de la Misma. Cet avion « ne fera pas de vols inter-théatres, entre les aéroports sur le territoire malien » précise le ministère espagnol de la Défense. Il a pour mission « de faciliter le transport des troupes et du matériel de la Mission d’appui international Mali sous conduite internationale » (AFISMA / MISMA).
Détachement composé
Parmi les 30 soldats qui composent le détachement espagnol, le commandant en chef de la mission, les deux équipages complets d’Hercule (composés d’un pilote, d’un copilote, d’un navigateur, d’un ingénieur de vol, y compris deux superviseurs de chaque chargement), appartenant à l’Ala 31. Un chef et deux équipes de déploiement opérationnel de l’Escadron de soutien au déploiement de l’armée de l’air (EADA) assurent la responsabilité de la sécurité du détachement espagnol. Une unité médicale de soutien au déploiement aérien (UMAAD) complète le dispositif pour la mise en place d’un hôpital de “rôle 1″ ainsi qu’une équipe du groupe de contrôle aérien mobile (GRUMOCA), qui établira des communications sécurisées avec l’Espagne.

CSI to supply Husky-mounted detection systems to Spanish Army 29 January 2013 Critical Solutions International (CSI) has been awarded a contract for delivery of two-operator Husky-mounted detection systems (HMDS) with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to help enhance the Spanish Army's mine clearance capabilities.
Awarded jointly with supply chain partners, including DCD Protected Mobility, NIITEK and Eleycon 21, the $20m contract covers supply of six Husky units as the vehicle-mounted mine detection (VMMD) solution, along with spare parts and training support to the army.
CSI CEO Mike McCormack said: "With two operators, increased mission capability, and the most advanced sensors available today, the Husky platform equipped with NIITEK's ground-penetrating radar provides the essential technology for route clearance and helps protect the lives of service members and civilians who live in combat environments."
Representing the first HMDS acquisition by Spain, the contract is designed to support the Spanish Army's combat engineers and soldiers deployed in Afghanistan.
Equipped with advanced sensors, the two operator HMDS retains the same protection, survivability, and mobility features of the single-operator Husky system, and has been designed to provide enhanced vehicle control and situational awareness to the user.
NIITEK president Juan Navarro stated: "The HMDS system has proven to be a useful technology against the threat of buried explosive hazards and IEDs that Spanish soldiers and Nato Coalition partners face in the current theatre of operations."
HMDS is a multi-panel high-performance system for detecting surface laid and buried explosive threats, including improvised explosive devices (IED), unexploded ordnance (UXO) and weapons caches on main supply routes (MSR) and open areas in the battlefield.
Originally delivered to the US Army, the system has helped military personnel in detecting numerous pressure-plate IEDs prior to detonation in numerous road surfaces and soil conditions in Afghanistan since early 2008.
Deliveries under the contract are scheduled for completion in 2013.

La loi sera présent le Prince des Asturies, le ministre de la défense, Pedro Morenés et le chef de l'Etat plus de la marine (Division), Jaime Muñoz-Delgado. Après 25 ans de service, l'emblème du navire de la marine espagnole sera mis hors service après un dernier voyage qui vous emmènera au chantier naval d'El Ferrol - où il a été construit dans la Décennie des années 80 - et il terminera son processus de démilitarisation pour ensuite être mis au rebut par une société spécialisée. Des coupes dans le budget de la défense et de la pertinence de la "Juan Carlos j'ai" navire de projection stratégique, affecté à la marine en 2010, a conduit la marine à décider de se désabonner au porte-avions « Príncipe de Asturias », dont le coût d'entretien par an varie d'environ 100 millions d'euros. Le porte-avions « Príncipe de Asturias » est entré en service dans la marine en 1988, soulageant le vieux « Labyrinthe ».

Snatch "Sirius", the most important air defense exercise Spanish Air Force
Today has begun, under the responsibility of Air Combat Command, Sirius execution Exercise 2013, the most important activity the Air Force throughout the year. This is an annual air defense exercise involved in virtually all of the combat units of the Air Force, and other means of the Armed Forces, in order to train and evaluate these units airspace peninsular national responsibility. Within the program, the Sappers Parachute Squadron of the Air Force (EZAPAC), based in Sewer Air Base, today held a demonstration in hostage rescue Airfield Los Canovas (Murcia).
Over the past week, from 11 to 15 February, has developed a preliminary stage of planning to produce guidelines for the year and start the activation process of alert operations centers of different unidades.En the second phase, which has started today on Monday 18th and runs until Friday 22 run offensive and defensive missions that are planned in response to the crisis dummy designed over the previous week.
To end the year there will be a third phase, called "Storm", to be held at the firing range Bardenas of Navarra, between 25 and 28 February. It will run missions to attack ground targets for warplanes featured this year in Zaragoza Air Base.
The "Sirius" is an exercise in planning and decision making in a limited air campaign, covering a broad spectrum of operations and situations that a staff could be in an emergency response to a crisis. This crisis would trigger the execution of an air campaign with a large class of missions in restoring the situation. The series of exercises are aimed at training the Air Combat Command and its units to achieve air superiority in a crisis situation, and low intensity conflicts.
Participating fighters F-18 wings 12, 15 and 46; Eurofighter wings 11 and 14, Mirage F-1 from Ala-14, F-5 Wing 23; Hercules transport aircraft of Ala-31, T -21 of Ala-35, Boeing 707 Group 47, and Super Puma helicopters of the Ala-48. Also participating antiaircraft artillery units also Army and Harrier vertical takeoff aircraft for the Navy.
The exercise simulates the existence of three warring factions. And Whiteland Blueland one hand, and on the other Redland. Blueland spans the north of the Iberian Peninsula and its capital would be located in Madrid, Whiteland cover areas of Castilla La Mancha and the east coast and would have its capital in Albacete, and Redland encompass areas of Andalusia and Murcia and its capital would Cánovas, near the town of Murcia Sewer.
This is a theoretical scenario and serves only as a vehicle for achieving the purpose and objectives of the exercise. It is fictional and does not represent any official view in real conflicts. It determines a sequence of events to evaluate, in a limited scope, the capabilities of Air Force units in relation to:
-Command and Control in conducting air operations and integration of the units in the Air Defense System.
-Implementation of alertness in bases and units.
-Planning and use of means of transport and logistical support.
-Management of sustained effort.
-Safety and Operations, force protection and operational health.
