Recently trained members of the Somali National Army (SNA) manoeuvre in formation during a house-clearing exercise as part of a passing-out parade 14 August 2012, at an African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) training facility on the western fringes of the Somali capital Mogadishu. 660 Somali soldiers who had recently returned from 8 months training in Bihanga, Uganda, passed out along with 48 elite commandos, following a display of tactical and security exercises which included demonstrations of house-clearing, manning of vehicle checkpoints and explosives detection. The latest batch of SNA troops trained outside of Somalia will now deploy across the country, including one battalion to the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, in continuing operations supported by AMISOM, which has wrested control and liberated large areas and towns of strategic importance across Somalia from the Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group Al Shabaab.

European Union delivers vehicles and training to Somaliland Coast Guard
Earlier this month two European Union missions, EUCAP Nestor and EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia Operation Atalanta worked together on two operations for the benefit of the Somaliland Coast Guard.
The first operation involved the transportation and handing over of five 4-wheel-drive vehicles to the Coast Guard of Somaliland. The vehicles were a donation from EUCAP Nestor to support the activities of the Somaliland Coast Guard and were transported by sea from the port of Djibouti to Berbera by EU Naval Force ship, RFA Lyme Bay.
Upon their arrival in Berbera, the vehicles were handed over to the Commander of the Somaliland Coast Guard, Admiral Abdi Hirse Duale, during a ceremony held on board RFA Lyme Bay on Wednesday 13 November, EU Navfor said.
The cooperation between the European Union and the Somaliland Coast Guard continued when 10 junior officers from the Somaliland Coast Guard and one prosecutor from Somaliland went on board RFA Lyme Bay to participate in a four-day ‘evidence handling for maritime crimes’ training programme, which was jointly organised and carried out by EUCAP Nestor and EU NAVFOR trainers.
The training took place between 10 and 13 November, with a focus on the “crime to court” process, aimed at discussing the chain of actions with regard to evidence handling in the different stages from incident to conviction. The training programme also covered the appropriate treatment and rights of arrested people, criminal charges and the transfer of investigation/jurisdiction from the navy/coast guard to the police.
On the legal side, the participating prosecutor from Somaliland gave a presentation on the local criminal justice system and legislation difficulties. The EUCAP Nestor team concentrated on the police and legal part of the training, with EU NAVFOR staff providing a maritime input to the process.
Speaking about the event, French police commander and EUCAP Nestor team leader, Jean-Eric Troubat, stated “The training was a success, thanks to all the participants, who were highly motivated. Despite the seas being very rough due to the heavy storm that hit the Somali coast, everybody concentrated on the training right until the end.”
The training finished on 13 November, with a ceremony attended by Admiral Abdi and Colonel Ahmed Ali Salah from the Somaliland Coast Guard. Certificates were handed over to all the training participants.
“This training was extremely useful to enhance the skills of our coast guard” said Admiral Abdi, at the ceremony. “It will help us to develop skills for dealing with crime scenes at sea, and I hope that there will be many more trainings to come. Both EU missions, EU NAVFOR and EUCAP Nestor have made big efforts to make this event a success.”
EUCAP Nestor is a civilian led European Union mission aimed at enhancing maritime capacities of countries in the Horn of Africa and the Western Indian Ocean and started its operations in July 2012. ~ http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=32818:european-union-delivers-vehicles-and-training-to-somaliland-coast-guard&catid=108:maritime-security&Itemid=233

Puntland Maritime Police Force operating three Thrush aircraft for maritime surveillance
The Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) has taken delivery of three second-hand Ayres S2R Thrush aircraft which it is using to conduct maritime surveillance and security patrols in support of the regional crackdown on piracy.
According to defence and security website IHS Janes, the three Thrush aircraft, as well as an Alouette III helicopter, were captured on satellite imagery on February 24 at the PMFP main base at the Red Sea port of Bosaso. The site said all three aircraft formerly belonged to the US State Department which previously used them to spray defoliants during anti-narcotics operations in South America. As a result they were fitted with armoured cockpits and engines to protect the crew and aircraft from hostile ground fire.
The aircraft may be armed with machineguns and rockets but IHS Jane’s sources give conflicting information on this.
Unnamed sources told IHS Janes that the aircraft are being flown by foreign contractors.
Apart from the three Ayres S2Rs, the PMPF also owns a 40-year-old Alouette III helicopter bought from South African commercial firm and fitted with a door gun. However, IHS Janes reports that it has since been grounded due to a lack of spares.
The force also reportedly operates a Russian-made Antonov An-26 transport aircraft which is used to rotate foreign contractors and deliver fuel and equipment to PMPF units on operations. The air drops includes fuel supplies at sea for the PMPF's three rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIBs), which are armed with 12.7 mm DShK heavy machine guns. A DC-3 transport aircraft was also captured on satellite imagery at the PMPF base.
IHS Janes also quoted one source saying that two Mil Mi-17 helicopters fitted with Western avionics are also routinely seen at the PMPF's airstrip in Bosaso. The two aircraft are reportedly flown by US crews and they are suspected to be part of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) or US special forces operations in the region.
Established in 2010 with the help of the United Arab Emirates, the PMPF has been struggling to arm itself because of a United Nations embargo which prohibits arms sale to the region which broke away from Somalia and proclaimed itself an independent republic at the height of the political and security chaos in the late 1990s.
However, Puntland's demonstrated ability to secure itself and its strategic location on the horn of Africa has attracted some Western and Middle Eastern countries who have established security ties as part of the war on terror in neighbouring Somalia and for the common front against maritime piracy in the Red Sea.

AMISOM and Somali National Army capture Eel Buur Town
Mogadishu 26th March 2014- In an operation that lasted three days, Somali National Army backed by African Union forces captured the strategic town of Eel Buur town in Galgaduud region of Somalia.
The joint forces left Galgaduud headquarters, Dhusamareeb three days ago capturing a number of small towns on the way, these include Ceel-lahele, Ceel-Garas and Ceel-Qoxle. Al-Shabaab ambushed the joint forces in several towns in desperate attempts to prevent AMISOM and SNA troops from reaching Eel buur but they were repulsed.
The African Union Special Representative for Somalia Ambassador Mahamat Saleh Annadif said the capture of Eel Buur town is a welcome victory for Somali security forces and AMISOM.
“The joint operation undertaken by AMISOM and SNA is a great achievement worth celebrating. The people in the Galgaduud region can now feel safe and begin to rebuild their lives unencumbered by the Al Shabaab terrorists”.
This is the tenth major town that AMISOM and SNA have liberated since the offensive started a month ago. Yesterday, after 5 days on the road, African Union AMISOM troops and Somali Forces also captured Mahas town located in Galgaduud region.

Somali National Army Celebrates 54th Anniversary
Once regarded as one of Africa’s best armies, the Somali National Army (SNA) has had better days before its disintegration with the collapse of the central government in 1991. But on April 12th, no efforts were spared in a colourful ceremony held to mark the army’s 54th anniversary. Resplendent in their crisp uniforms, youthful soldiers from the elite Danab commando unit strode confidently past a cheering crowd; their signature warrior roar signalling a determined ambition to reclaim lost glory.
