Citation :: Two killed in Zambian military plane crash

A ZAMBIAN Air Force trainer plane crashed at a farm west of Lusaka yesterday, killing ZAF Deputy Commander Major General Muliokela Muliokela and Colonel Brian Mweene who were flying the aircraft.
Minister of Defence Edgar Lungu confirmed the accident, and said,

“It is with a heavy heart and a lot of regret that I want to announce that today between 12h30 and 13h30 a ZAF SAAB MFI-15 trainer aircraft was involved in an accident killing both pilots on board. Investigations have been instituted into the matter to establish the cause of the accident and meanwhile we are in the process of trying to inform the next of kin of the two gentlemen,” Lungu said.

The minister said the plane crashed in the Westwood area. According to an eyewitness, Miyoba Mwiinga, scores of people rushed to the scene with the hope of rescuing the victims.

Farm workers rushed to the scene while passers-by jumped over an electric wire fence to gain access to the accident scene. He said the plane started losing altitude and almost crashed into a roadside market on Mumbwa Road. It however regained momentum but still flew low, almost knocking down electricity poles before it went up again.

Mwiinga said while the plane was still in the air, its engine went off and it nosedived, crashing at the farm.

“We rushed to the scene before anyone came to the area. We found people had died and pieces of the plane scattered around,” Mwiinga said.

Later, the ZAF cordoned off the area and people could only watch from a distance. In January, ealier this year, two ZAF officers died after their FA 528 SAB Aircraft crashed around Kabanje Bwiketo Village in Livingstone.

In March 2013, a ZAF pilot died and his co-pilot was injured after their Z9 helicopter crashed upon landing at Lusaka City Airport. In December 2012, a ZAF crew and senior government officials that included President Michael Sata’s press secretary, George Chellah, escaped injury after their helicopter crash-landed in Shiwangandu area of Muchinga Province.

GABORONE, Botswana — The number of foreign firms active in the Zambian defense market is expected to grow this year with companies from China and Brazil setting up plants to manufacture troop carriers and ammunition to supply the Zambia Defense Force (ZDF), the Zambia Police Service and the regional market.

More global defense equipment manufacturers from Russia, China, Italy and South Africa are already competing to meet the need for new aircraft, aerial defense systems, troop carriers, Navy boats and special forces equipment in a country with a rising defense budget. Chinese companies are set to win more patrol boat orders for Zambia's new naval unit, the 48th Marine Group, which was launched late in July to protect the country's in-land maritime borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe.

Last month, President Edgar Lungu, who is also defence minister, appointed a Defence Force Modernization Commission to work with the ministries of defence and finance to acquire new equipment for the armed forces modernization program. The commission, which is headed by Cabinet Secretary Roland Msiska, will plan how to spend a budget that has increased to 3.2 trillion Kwacha (US$600.5 million) in 2014/2015, up from 1.6 trillion Kwacha in the 2012/2013 financial year.

In addition to its own budget, Zambia early this year secured $192 million from China to buy new weapons to replace largely obsolete equipment. Most of it will be used to upgrade the Air Force with the acquisition of new Mi-17 attack/transport helicopters, SF 260 TW trainers, L-15 fighter jets and C-27 J Spartan transports to boost attack, airlift and border surveillance capabilities.

A former Zambian Army official who is now a defense attache in a neighboring country told Defense News that Zambia, which was declared incapable of defending itself in 2013, will soon emerge as one of the biggest defense markets and equipment manufacturers in Africa as it realigns its defense and strategic interests with the rest of the world.

"Since 2013, Zambia has been moving gradually to make sure that it is capable of defending itself. That includes teaming up with companies in and outside the country to ensure a revival of the armed forces and the defense industrial complex.

"In this regard, Zambia will continue to acquire equipment from the rest of the world but move to make sure that our joint venture partners set up manufacturing plants for military vehicles and basic weapons for local use and export to the rest of Africa. I have no doubt that with the projects already in the pipeline, we will move from a net importer of military equipment to a producer and exporter of the same," he said.

Companies from Russia, China, Italy, South Africa and Brazil are competing to supply Zambia's needs for new aerial defense assets.

According to Deputy Defence Minister Christopher Mulenga, Brazilian-Chinese truck manufacturer Metro-Shacman Trucks is negotiating to set up a factory to supply troop carriers. The company is a subsidiary of China's Shaanxi Automobile Group Co.

In a statement released following a meeting of the two parties at the 10th LAAD Defence and Security exhibition held in Brazil in April, Zambian Embassy Press Secretary Patson Chilemba said Shacman Trucks wants to take advantage of the country's stability to supply the local and regional troop carrier market .

“They [Shacman] have requested to come to Zambia for further discussions and possibly make formalities. Highlighting the stability and security in Zambia, Shacman thought it appropriate to deepen its investment in the country," Chilemba said.

Shacman hopes to build on the Zambian success of its $6 billion commercial truck plant, which was officially launched this year with the goal of producing 1,000 trucks per annum. It will join two other Chinese truck brands — the Great Wall and Higer — which are already established in the Zambian market. The Chinese government has also provided Zambia with a $19 million loan to help revive a weapons factory to manufacture bombs, ammunition and gunpowder for the military and the regional market.

The Army-owned factory was founded in the 1970s by former president Kenneth Kaunda to supply ammunition, light bombs and landmines to regional liberation movements in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa. In terms of the new plan, state-owned Chinese arms manufacturer Norinco will invest in the revival of the factory. However, it remains unclear if production will restart before the end of the year as planned.

China is expected to earn more from the sale of patrol boats to Zambia's new 48th marine special forces unit which was launched at the end of July. The unit, which has three squadrons based on the Luapula River, Lake Kariba and Lake Mweru in the north, is equipped with at least five Mac-5 patrol boats donated by China.

Launching the special forces unit, Lungu said he is leading negotiations to acquire more patrol boats and high-tech equipment to meet the unit's operational needs.

“The deployment of this marine special forces unit in Luapula province marks the beginning of securing of our water bodies across the country. I authorized the establishment of this unit of special forces and with its establishment comes a lot of challenges which we will address. This unit will ensure the effective enforcement of the fishing bans in place in water bodies around the country," Lungu said.

According to Mulenga, Zambia welcomes the establishment of new military equipment manufacturing companies in the country, saying this will cut the cost of imports while ensuring that locals will learn critical skills needed to operate its own defense industries in the future.

AVIC has published photos of Zambian Air Force pilots and maintenance crew completing their conversion to the Hongdu L-15 supersonic training and light attack aircraft.

The Zambia Air Force (ZAF) is allegedly to have signed a deal for six L-15 Falcon jet trainers made by Hongdu Aviation Industry of China.

These come hot after the delivery of 16 K-8 Karakorum jet trainers and seven Z-9 light attack helicopter both made in China.

The L-15 is an advanced trainer aircraft currently under development by Nanchang based Hongdu Aviation Industry Corporation. The aircraft made its maiden flight on 13 March 2006. The aircraft’s general designer is Mr. Zhang Hong, and the development is reportedly assisted by Yakovlev OKB of Russia.

The L-15 is a direct rival to the Guizhou Aircraft Industry Corporation (GAIC) JL-9/FTC-2000 Mountain Eagle in competition for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force’s (PLAAF) next-generation advanced trainer aircraft program.

Zambia has sent more than 750 troops to the Central African Republic (CAR) to help maintain peace and order in that country.

Defence Deputy Minister Christopher Mulenga said another contingent of troops was being prepared and would soon be deployed.

Mr Mulenga was speaking on arrival at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, ahead of the second extraordinary meeting of the specialised technical committee on defence, safety and security slated for the Ethiopian capital.

The meeting of defence and security ministers is expected to make important decisions on the establishment of the African standby force.

This is according to a statement released yesterday [January 14] by first secretary for Press and tourism at the Zambian embassy in Addis Ababa, Naomi Chulu.

Mr Mulenga said the deployment of troops to foreign missions was in line with the country’s continued efforts to help restore peace and security to African countries faced with instability.

He expressed gratitude to the African Union and the United Nations for trusting Zambian soldiers and giving them the opportunity to participate in peace-keeping missions.

Mr Mulenga also said Zambia had signed some defence and security protocols to reduce terrorism threats in the country.

Meanwhile, Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Susan Sikaneta, who received Mr Mulenga, expressed delight that the country had sent a high-powered delegation to the security indaba.

Le Bataillon 1 du contingent zambien de la MINUSCA a été décoré de la médaille de l’ONU le jeudi 10 mars à Birao. Cette cérémonie de décoration a été présidée par l’adjoint du Commandant de la Force de la MINUSCA, le Major-General Ahmed Shaffuddin, en présence de plusieurs autres personnalités militaires et civiles de la Mission dont le Chef du Contingent Zambien, le Lieutenant-Colonel Kelvin Chiyangi.

Dans son adresse aux soldats du Contingent, l’Adjoint au Commandant de la Force a salué « la persévérance, le dévouement et la bravoure pour la noble cause de la paix et de la stabilité en République Centrafricaine. » ; il rappellera par ailleurs la contribution loyale de la Zambie aux missions de paix depuis plus de 20ans. De manière particulière, il remerciera le Chef du contingent pour son « leadership et sa gestion des évènements durant la crise de juin 2015. »

Au cours de l’année écoulée, le contingent Zambien a apporté son assistance à des écoles, à des organisations de jeunes et à des orphelinats et a fourni une assistance médicale a de nombreuses communautés locales, notamment dans la préfecture de la Vakaga où il est basé.

Le premier Bataillon Zambien est arrivé en RCA pour le compte de la MINUSCA le 30 avril 2015 et est devenu opérationnel le 23 mai de la même année. Il a accompli avec brio toutes les tâches qui lui ont été assignées. Déployé a Birao, le contingent assure la couverture sécuritaire de la préfecture de la Vakaga, mais étend son influence opérationnelle sur la Ouadda Djalle, la Sam Ouandja et la Ouadda dans la préfecture de la Haute Kotto afin d’assurer le mandat prioritaire de la MINUSCA qui est la protection des civils.

La Zambie est un grand contributeur de troupes pour les missions de l’ONU. Ces différentes missions l’ont successivement porté sur des théâtres d’Operations en Irak et en Iran ; au Tchad, au Mozambique, au Rwanda, en Angola, au Kosovo, en Erythree-Ethiope, au Liberia, en Sierra-Leone, en Somalie en République démocratique du Congo et au Burundi.

Zambian President Edgar Lungu has issued an order for the military to take over Lusaka city and bring a volatile situation under control.

Lusaka residents in various high density areas like George, Lilanda, Matero, Chawama, Kanyama, Mandevu and Chaisa have taken to the streets attacking foreign nationals they accuse of being behind a spate of ritual murders.

At the time the order was issued, the two-day riots across the city of Lusaka left two people dead after being burnt alive in Lusaka’s Kanyama Township.

Calm returned to the city of Lusaka after a two day riotous spell targeted at foreign nationals mostly from Rwanda on suspicion of being behind a spate of ritual killings in Lusaka.

Soldiers joined the patrol in some areas mostly hit by the riots with some foreign nationals opening their shops.

Police spokesperson Charity Chanda said the two people were killed in Kanyama after being burnt alive by Lusaka residents with over 65 shops ransacked during the riots.

Residents had taken their frustration with the ritual killings on foreign nationals in what others have branded mere banditry and nothing to do with suspicion for ritual killings.

The police also clarified that reports going round that body parts were found in some of the fridges looted from foreign nationals were false.

Six people have died in Lusaka in the last four weeks in similar circumstances that left them with some of their body parts plucked out.

PRESIDENT LUNGU’S FULL STATEMENT

I, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, President of the Republic of Zambia and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has issued a Special Operational Order to the security services to restore law and order in some parts of Lusaka.

The order is specifically designed to stop the recent spate of ritual murders and the resultant rioting in some townships where irresponsible people spread inflammatory rumours against certain nationalities

The operational order will be reviewed tomorrow [April 21].

Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Commander Eric Chimese has renewed the country’s continued support to the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations.

He was speaking in New York where he held high-level meetings with UN Under-Secretary General for peacekeeping Operations Hervé Ladsous and military advisers of the US, United Kingdom (UK) and Italy.

According to the statement issued yesterday [April 29] by First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at the Permanent Missions of Zambia to the UN, Lieutenant General Chimese and Mr Ladsous discussed various issues of mutual interest to Zambia and the UN, mainly focusing on the promotion and protection of international peace and security.

Gen Chimese renewed Zambia’s commitment to continue contributing to the UN’s efforts to prevent conflicts and maintain peace.

Zambia’s Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the UN Dr Mwaba Kasese-Bota attended the meeting.

The Air Commander also held talks with the Chief of Aircraft Management and Contracts Unit in the Department of Field Support of the UN.

Zambia is a long-time troop and Police contributing country to the UN’s peacekeeping and peace-building operations.

Gen Chimese held talks with the Permanent Representative of The Netherlands to the United Nations Karel van Oosterom on strengthening bilateral ties, partnerships and capacity building between the two countries.

The ZAF Commander separately met military advisors of the Permanent Missions of the United States of America, United Kingdom and Italy to the United Nations.

The discussions also focused on strengthening bilateral relations, partnerships and capacity building.

ZAF Legal Counsel Brigadier General Jonathan Chola Makanta, Zambia UN Mission military advisor Brigadier General Erick Mwewa and Defence Attaché at the Zambian Embassy to the US Brigadier General Henry Mukuka, among others, accompanied the air Commander to the meetings.

Addressing the Zambian UN Mission diplomatic staff on Wednesday [April 27], the ZAF Commander commended Ambassador Kasese-Bota and her staff for their work in representing Zambia at the UN.

He thanked the diplomatic staff for the contribution made to the maintenance of international peace and security.

The ZAF Commander assured that the security situation in Zambia was stable, secure and peaceful.

Gen Chimese called on Zambians at home and abroad to be patriotic and positively speak about the country wherever they are.

KUBINKA (Moscow Region) (Sputnik) — Zimbabwe may be interested in acquiring Russian artillery, fighter jets and helicopters being showcased at the ongoing Army-2016 international military and technical forum near Moscow, Zimbabwean Defense Minister Sydney Sekeramayi told Sputnik Wednesday.

"It is a very good exhibition and the ground forces assets that have been shown are very impressive. There are some that we are very interested in and that will be discussing with the relevant authorities. At this point in time we are still assessing and are coming to a conclusion on what we want to acquire from here but that could be artillery, jet fighters, helicopters," Sekeramayi said.

The Army-2016 expo, organized by the Russian Defense Ministry, kicked off on Tuesday and is due to last through Sunday. The forum is held in the military-themed Patriot Park in Kubinka near Moscow and in a number of locations in Russia's military districts.

The event brings together representatives from the Russian defense industry, research institutes, universities, as well as foreign companies. Over 800 Russian and foreign participants are expected to be involved in some 7,000 exhibitions throughout the week. The forum's participants and guests are attending a number of conferences and roundtables to discuss the future development of military technology.

The delivery of the first of Zambia's new HAIC L-15 multirole jet fighters was confirmed during the Africa Aerospace & Defence (AAD) exhibition held in South Africa from 14-18 September, when two were displayed at the show.

An official from the China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation (CATIC), which promoted the aircraft at the show, was reluctant to discuss the numbers involved, but told IHS Jane's that the first batch of "more than two" L-15s arrived in Zambia in July and the rest are expected to be delivered by early 2017. A CATIC official told IHS Jane's in 2014 that Zambia had ordered six L-15s.

It was confirmed during the event that Zambia is receiving the L-15AFT attack/fighter/trainer version as opposed to the L-15AJT advanced jet trainer that recently entered service with the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) as the JL-10.

Major Paul Besa, one of the first Zambian L-15 pilots, told IHS Jane's that the delivery of the L-15s marked a milestone for the ZAF as it now has a third-generation multirole fighter with fly-by-wire avionics. He said the aircraft are being flown by the Air Defence Command's Lusaka-based Squadron 15.

Despite the name of the command, he stressed that the ZAF's L-15AFTs would be used in both the air defence and attack roles, saying that Zambia has ordered the full-range of weapons.

In the air-to-air role these include PL-5E short-range air-to-air missiles on the two outermost hardpoints. The air-to-ground weapons include a 23 mm PC-2AI gun pod on the centreline hardpoint and a combination of HF-18D pods for 57 mm rockets, 250 kg or 500 kg bombs, and air-to-surface missiles on the remaining four hardpoints.

Maj Besa said that the ZAF had ordered both LS-6 GPS/INS guided bombs and YJ-9E air-to-surface missiles. The latter is the export version of China's TL-10.

ZHUHAI --- The 11th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China 2016) kicked off in Zhuhai on November 1.

The exhibition not only brought together many domestic and foreign well-known exhibitors, but also attracted many domestic and foreign customers to visit and to discuss opportunities for cooperation.

In an exclusive interview, Erick Chimese, commander of Zambia Air Force, said that China's L-15 fighter trainer (training and light attack aircraft) is a very advanced multi-purpose flight platform with advanced avionics and weapon systems. As a third-generation aircraft, L-15 has led the Zambia Air Force to the modern aviation stage.

In the international market, the advanced trainers mainly include Yakovlev Yak-130 of Russia and M346 of Italy and so on. So why would the Zambia Air Force choose L-15?

Chimese said that as a developing country, Zambia needs to take financial issues into account in the procurement of new aircraft. As the traditional partner of the Zambia Air Force, the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) provided us with a very flexible choice, which helped the Zambia government fulfill the goal of procuring advanced fighter in a tight financial situation.

Moreover, from the perspective of the national defense development, Zambia needs to have a strong air force to defend the country. L-15 can meet this requirement and help balance operational tasks and training efficiency.

In addition, the maintenance cost of L-15 is not expensive. With the above factors considered, after a comparison of similar aircraft of Russia and Italy, the Zambia Air Force made its final decision on L-15, Chimese said.

Over the years, the Zambia Air Force has purchased a variety of Chinese aircraft, which made it an loyal AVIC customer. Chimese said that with a strong national defense, China is a powerful country comparable to the US and Russia. Zambia has always been China's traditional partner. The economic growth of Zambia has led to a growing demand for the development of national defense.

In this regard, Zambia hopes to stay in line with China, he said. From the Zambia Air Force's point of view, there is no doubt that it hopes to procure more advanced equipment like fighters and other types of aircraft, according to Chimese. The Zambia Air force is currently in negotiation with AVIC on such matters, he added.

Chimese said that Zambia is a major African country with a vast territory, so air transportation has broad prospects in Zambia and there is also a high demand for aircraft. The Chinese aircraft such as Modern Ark 60, Y-12 and Z-9 purchased by Zambia have already facilitated Zambia's transportation. Therefore, there is no doubt that Zambia will consider the procurement of more Chinese aircraft in the future, he said.

Chimese said that compared with many airshows including the Paris Air Show, the Dubai Airshow and the Africa Aerospace and Defense Show, the Airshow China 2016 is a world-class exhibition in terms of organization or exhibits. Since his first visit in 2012, the Airshow China has made great progress with an increasing scale and a richer display of exhibits, he said.

At the opening ceremony of the Airshow China 2016 on November 1, the domestic heavy stealth fighter J-20 made its public debut with a wonderful flight performance. After seeing the flight performance of J-20, Chimese said that he felt as if he saw the future of Chinese fighters.

Chimese is a former fighter pilot with years of flying experience, he said that the J-20 is an advanced fighter comparable to the F-22 of US. The flying actions of J-20 showed that it has a very strong thrust, which is quite shocking, he added.

Before the appearance of Chinese fighters such as J-20, the fights in the world were divided into two groups: the west and Russia. Chimese said that he hopes the AVIC can continue to develop so that other countries will have more alternatives in the future.

Hommage posthume de la MINUSCA à l’adjudant Boyd Chibuye

L’adjudant Boyd Chibuye, du contingent zambien, est décédé le 10 juin à Entebbe (Ouganda), des suites de maladie après une évacuation sanitaire. Ce jeudi 15 juin 2017, la Mission a salué sa mémoire lors d’une cérémonie solennelle.

Aux côtés de la Représentante spéciale adjointe du Secrétaire général, Diane Corner, l’on notait la présence du Commandant adjoint de la Force, le Général Sidiki Daniel Traore, de la Directrice de Cabinet du Représentant spécial, Barrie Freeman, et de nombreux membres des personnels militaire, policier et civil de la Mission.

Après les honneurs faits en sa mémoire, le chef du contingent zambien, le colonel Gilbert Mulenga, a salué dans ses propos la mémoire d’ «un soldat dévoué et discipliné ».

Pour Diane Corner, l’occasion a été de rappeler le sacrifice que tout le personnel des Nations Unies fait au nom de la paix et a rendu un vibrant hommage au soldat « mort au service de la paix en Centrafrique ».

Né le 12 novembre 1972, l’adjudant Boyd Chibuye était marié et père de cinq enfants. Il a rejoint la MINUSCA le 27 décembre 2016 avec le second déploiement du bataillon zambien dont l’effectif est de 750 Casques bleus.

Le premier Bataillon zambien de la MINUSCA est arrivé en République centrafricaine le 30 avril 2015. Déployé à Birao, le contingent assure la couverture sécuritaire de la préfecture de la Vakaga, mais étend son influence opérationnelle sur la Ouadda Djalle, la Sam Ouandja et la Ouadda dans la préfecture de la Haute Kotto.

La Zambie est un grand contributeur de troupes pour les Missions de maintien de la paix ONU. Outre la RCA, la Zambie a ainsi contribué aux efforts de l’ONU pour la paix en Iran ; au Tchad, au Mozambique, au Rwanda, en Angola, au Kosovo, en Erythrée et Ethiopie, au Liberia, en Sierra-Leone, en Somalie en République démocratique du Congo et au Burundi.

Zambian L-15s.Zambian President Edgar Lungu has commissioned a simulator centre for the Zambian Air Force’s recently acquired L-15 jets.

The centre was commissioned on 5 September by Lungu in the capital Lusaka. It was built by China National Aero-Technician Import and Export cooperation (CATIC), “who have remained our faithful partners,” Lungu said.

“This centre aims at building pilot's craft and confidence through cost effective, safe and realistic training methods on highly computerized and technologically advanced L-15 fighter ground attack aircraft. Let me urge you all to ensure that all ZAF diligently look after this expensive equipment,” Lungu said.

“Not so long ago, I was here to officially open another state of the art facility, the L-15 hangar, constructed by CATIC, a company under the umbrella of Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC),” he said, noting that CATIC helped construct the Zambian Air Force out-patient department at Air Force Headquarters, which was opened last year, and has assisted with the construction of a banquet hall at the Air Force base in Lusaka.

“The acquisition of smart technology and assets which guarantee operational capability without compromising standards, is in line with the Zambia Air Force’s vision of creating “a lean, well equipped, well trained, professional and efficient tactical air force, capable of responding to the air power needs of the 21st century Zambia.

“The Patriotic Front Government is committed to equipping the defence forces with modern equipment to enable them address new security challenges efficiently and competently. Undoubtedly, this new facility is a milestone and a show of my government’s commitment to making a smart Zambia. The ZAF ambitious programme has seen the construction of office buildings, aircraft hangars, messing facilities and road tarring in ZAF bases among others,” Lungu said.

Zambia received its first L-15s in July 2016 from Hongdu, with the type entering service with 15 Squadron at Air Defence Command, based at Lusaka-Kenneth Kaunda International Airport. Hongdu is part of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

Zambia reportedly ordered six L-15s in early 2014 at a cost of around $100 million. The L-15 was chosen over competitors such as the Yak-130 and M-346 due to its lower operating and acquisition costs. At least four have been delivered so far.

The supersonic L-15 was developed to meet the Chinese Air Force and Navy lead-in fighter trainer requirements. In Chinese service it will be called the JL-10.

The L-15 is powered by two Ivchenko Progress AL-222K-25F turbofan engines fitted with after-burners, giving a top speed of more than Mach 1.4. Four under-wing and two wing-tip hard-points can carry around 3 000 kilogrammes of ordnance.

Dans un milieu majoritairement masculin, le sous-lieutenant Thokozile Muwamba, 24 ans, vient de rentrer dans l’histoire de son pays en tant que la toute première femme à piloter un avion de chasse dans l’armée.

Après avoir rejoint l’armée en 2012, Muwamba a eu la chance de faire partie du programme des Forces aériennes de la Zambie pour former des pilotes qui vont combler l‘écart entre les sexes sur le terrain.

« Les hommes ne sont nos compétiteurs, mais des partenaires avec lesquels on devrait travailler, et les femmes devraient donc commencer à participer et à démontrer leurs capacités. Pour cela, je suis prête à relever les défis », avait-elle déclaré au journal Times la semaine dernière.

« Par exemple quand je suis dans l’avion, il ne distingue pas le sexe. Je peux aussi lui donner la bonne direction pour qu’il vole correctement », ajoute Muwamba.

“ Les impossibilités peuvent être rendues possibles tant que l'on est déterminé à atteindre son but.”

Le commandant de la Force aérienne de la Zambie, le lieutenant-général Eric Mwaba Chimese, avait annoncé en 2015 sa décision d’intégrer d’avantage des pilotes femmes, question de stimuler la lutte pour l‘égalité des sexes dans le pays.

Selon le général de brigade Kapungwe, qui est le commandant de cette base aérienne à Mumbwa, le fait d’avoir le sous-lieutenant Muwamba comme première pilote de chasse illustre clairement que les femmes sont entrain de progresser dans le domaine. “Nous voulons dans l’avenir voir plus de femmes dans le pays devenir des pilotes de chasse “, peut-on lire dans le Times.

Le sous-lieutenant Thokozile Muwamba a quitté l’Université de Copperbelt (CBU) en tant qu‘étudiante de première année pour rejoindre l’armée et poursuivre sa carrière de rêve. Elle doit son succès au travail acharné, à la détermination et à l’inspiration de sa famille et de ses instructeurs. “Les impossibilités peuvent être rendues possibles tant que l’on est déterminé à atteindre son but.”, a-t-elle conseillé aux femmes.

Thokozile Muwamba fait partie aujourd’hui de la courte liste de pilotes féminins en Afrique. Le continent compte peu de femmes pilotes dans l’armée de l’air.

Le Nigeria a décoré sa première pilote, l’Officier d’aviation Blessing Liman, en 2012. Liman était apparemment la première femme militaire pilote en Afrique de l’Ouest à l‘époque.

One of the Zambian aircraft is confirmed as AF002 (former Leonardo testserial CSX62307), a second C-27J for Zambia was seen in primer, only with CSX62309 at Torino airport (Italy). Now AF003 was seen at Lanseria, so it looks if the ZAF has three Spartans now. But we think that serial AF001 is reserved for a Gulfstream 650 that was ordered mid-2018 by the Zambian government, and that AF002 and AF003 (most probably former CSX62309) are the two C-27Js ordered in 2015. So no third C-27Js for the ZAF.

The C-27Js likely replace the old BAe748s of the ZAF and supplement the Y-12-II, Y-12-4 and MA-60 as transport aircraft. The C-27Js will also be based at Lusaka/Kenneth Kaunda International airport (Zambia).
