Kamov's Ka-52 "Alligator" attack helicopter is making its debut international show appearance in a flying display, as Russia's rotorcraft industry looks for the type to make its first bite into the international sales market.
With its distinctive coaxial main rotors, the menacing type is already in operational service with the Russian air force, which is acquiring the aircraft as a replacement for its aged Mil Mi-24s. Nine Alligators have been delivered to the service so far, says Flightglobal's Ascend Online Fleets database, with a further 131 also to be handed over under current confirmed orders.



A maximum take-off weight of almost 11t includes an array of armaments, including a 30mm cannon, 80mm unguided rockets and air-to-surface missiles.
The Russian military has also shown interest in a ship-based development, dubbed the Ka-52K.
The Ka-52 is among the products being promoted by Russian Helicopters (hall 2A, stand C198) and Russia's Rosoboronexport arms agency. They are seeking to secure the first export customer for the Alligator, with the model having been outgunned by Boeing's AH-64E Apache during a contest to equip the Indian army.

Turning heads at Le Bourget whenever it takes to the skies is Kamov’s Ka-52 helicopter. Its co-axial rotor blades and comprehensive weapons suite mark it out from the herd and, amazingly for a helicopter, it even has ejection seats. With the Ka-52 now in Russian army service and being touted for export, the design bureau is busy working on a maritime version for the Russian navy.

Kamov has championed the co-axial layout for many years, arguing that it increases agility and performance (particularly vertical climb) while making the helicopter safer by removing any torque problems and, as a consequence, any need for a tailrotor.
Today’s Ka-52 is the latest iteration of a line of Kamov combat helicopters that reaches back to the single-seat Ka-50 that made an appearance at the Paris Air Show in 1993. The side-by-side seating of the Ka-52 promotes crew coordination, according to Kamov design bureau general designer Sergei Mikheyev, who also noted that the machine embodies features that have been born out of combat experience in Afghanistan and the Caucasus.
In its Russian army version, as shown here, the Ka-52 has a weapons suite including 9K120 Ataka and 9K121 Vikhr-1 missiles, the latter using laser beam-riding guidance. It has a 2A42 30mm cannon and the ability to carry S-8 80mm unguided rockets. It can also carry Igla-S air-to-air missiles as part of the Strelets system. The helicopter is well protected with the President-S self-defense suite.
For the Russian navy’s Ka-52K Kamov is working on new weapons capabilities that are more applicable to a life at sea. What kind of weapon suite the maritime version might carry is yet to be revealed, but “it will be different,” stated Mikheyev. The aircraft here is displayed alongside a number of MBDA’s weapons, such as the Marte anti-ship missile, Mistral air-to-air missile and PARS3 precision weapon. “We have accepted NATO standards as our own,” said Mikheyev. “We are very open to bring in foreign equipment or weapons.”
The Ka-52K is intended to serve from a variety of Russian navy vessels, but primarily the two Mistral-class amphibious assault vessels that Russia is buying from France. When asked about progress with the Ka-52K, Mikheyev responded with a wry smile, “It will fly as soon as the French deliver Mistral vessels. When Mistral comes to St. Petersburg, the helicopter will be ready!”
India has been identified as a good opportunity for the Ka-52, particularly as the helicopter is one of only a handful that can operate effectively at altitudes exceeding 4,000 meters. While India has recently selected the Boeing AH-64 over the Mil Mi-28 to fulfill a gunship requirement, Kamov maintains that there is potential for sales there. “Apache was lucky, because the Ka-52 did not take part in that tender,” joked Mikheyev, “but we continue to pay high attention to this area.”
Mikheyev reported a continued growth path for the Ka-52 design. “Things change, tactics change,” he commented, “and the Ka-52 will continue to change. We are looking ahead ten years and we have made space for future developments. This is what the art of designing means.” One area where the general designer sees big improvements coming is in major improvements and new ideas in helicopter defenses.

vous ne le trouvez pas une redondance avec le Mi28N,qui lui trouve des decbouchés export?

Dérivé du Ka-50 «Black-Shark» de constructeur Kamov code OTAN «Hokum», l’Alligator est un hélicoptère de combat de hautes performances avec une capacité jour et nuit, doté d’une capacité de survie élevée. Doté d’une conception de rotor coaxial, il offre un plafond de vol stationnaire de 4000m et la vitesse verticale de montée atteint 10m seconde à une altitude de 2.500 m. Les pales de rotor sont faites de matériaux polymères et résistent aux tirs d’armes légères. 
Equipé d’un cockpit blindé qui résiste aux projectiles de 12,7. Les deux pilotes disposent en outre d’un système d’éjection inédit qui éjecte en premier le rotor coaxial. puis déclenche l’éjection des deux sièges, du pilote et du mitrailleur.
Les systèmes de vol comprennent un système de navigation inertielle (INS), un pilote automatique et affichage tête haute (HUD). Les capteurs comprennent pod infrarouge (FLIR) et un radar de suivi de terrain. Le Ka-52 est équipé d'un récepteur d'alerte radar couplé à un système de guerre électronique.
Le Ka-52 est propulsé par deux turbines Klimov117VMA, fournissant chacune 2.200 CV (1660 kW). Les moteurs sont placés de chaque côté du fuselage pour renforcer la capacité de survie au combat. L'hélicoptère a également une unité de puissance auxiliaire (APU) pour le fonctionnement autonome.

Boeing a annoncé, le 1er mai, le premier vol de son hélicoptère d’attaque léger AH-6i Little Bird dans sa configuration de série. Le vol a eu lieu « récemment » sur le site du constructeur à Mesa dans l’Arizona. D’une durée d’une vingtaine de minutes, ce premier vol s’est limité à des manœuvres en translation avant, arrière et latérale à des vitesses modérées et à basse altitude.

Appareil monoturbine (Rolls-Royce 250-C30R/3M), l’AH-6i est une version améliorée du AH-6M utilisé par les forces spéciales de l’US Army. Il est basé sur le fuselage du MD530F, lui-même dérivé de l’OH-6 Cayuse des années 60. Il bénéficie également de technologies héritées de l’AH-64E Apache, notamment au niveau de l’avionique et du cockpit.

Lors du premier vol du prototype de l’AH-6i en octobre 2009, Boeing avait annoncé que l’appareil était destiné aux clients internationaux. Les clients potentiels se serait manifestés notamment au Moyen Orient et en Amérique du Sud. Ce qui n’a pas empêché le constructeur de proposer l’AH-6i à l’US Army dans le cadre du programme Armed Aerial Scout, en concurrence avec l’AAS-72X d’Airbus Helicopters, entre autres. Le programme AAS a finalement été annulé en fin d’année dernière.

La famille Little Bird comprend aussi une version dronisée qui a fait son premier vol en octobre 2004.

Saint-Pétersbourg, l’hélicoptériste Kamov a présenté officiellement, ce mois pour la première, fois le prototype de la version navale du Ka-52, le « Katran ». L’aéronef a volé pour la première fois en mars de cette année.  

Selon son concepteur le Ka-52K dispose d’un système de rotor retravaillé avec des roulements élastomères dans les points de fixation qui permettent un poids décollage plus élevés. De plus, les raccords d’ailes sont également renforcés pour permettent l’emport des charges plus lourdes dont notamment des missiles à grandes portées. Lors de la présentation du Ka-52K « Katran », celui-ci était entouré des missiles Kh-38MLE et Kh-35VE. Le Kh-38MLE supersonique à guidage laser permet des tirs contre des cibles blindées terrestres, ainsi que des cibles durcies à une distance de 40km. Le Kh-35VE est un missile antinavire subsonique d’une portée de 120km Les données concernant la cibles peuvent être entrées dans la mémoire du missile depuis l'avion tireur ou depuis d'autres sources externes. Les données concernant son propre vol sont introduites après celles de la cible. Un système de navigation inertielle dirige le vol du missile pendant la première partie de son vol, le stabilisant à une altitude donnée et le dirigeant vers la zone approximative dans laquelle navigue sa cible. En approchant d'une certaine distance de la cible, l'autodirecteur actif est allumé pour trouver, verrouiller et poursuivre la cible. La centrale inertielle du missile le dirige alors en direction de sa cible et diminue son altitude jusqu'à un niveau extrêmement bas (de l'ordre de quelques mètres). Lorsqu'il vole ainsi au-ras de la surface de l'eau, sa détection par les radars du navire visé devient très difficile, à-cause de la quantité importante d'échos parasites générés par les vagues juste en dessous de lui. À cette altitude, le missile continue sa séquence de guidage vers sa cible en corrélant les données reçues par le radar avec celles de la centrale inertielle, jusqu'à obtenir un impact.



Le Kamov Ka-53k « Katran» :

Le Ka-52K "Katran" est une version navalisée du Ka-52 destiné à être embarquée à bord des bâtiments de la marine russe. Le Ka-52K bénéficie de pales et d’ailes repliables, d’un train d’atterrissage renforcé, d’un traitement anticorrosion ainsi que de nouvelles capacités comme la lutte antinavire. Contrairement à son homologue le Ka-52 «Alligator», le Ka-52K emportera la version bibande du radar «Arbalet» de type AESA avec un capteur en bande Ka (cibles terrestres) et un autre en bande X pour les cibles marines.

During the Ostrava NATO Days event, the Bell Helicopter company showcased a simulator of the latest AH-1Z Viper helicopter. The simulator may also be used by the crews of the UH-1Y venom rotor-craft. Czech Republic is an important market for the Bell company. Its significance may be equal to the significance of Poland, since the Czech Armed Forces are willing to acquire 12 light multi-role helicopters, and the relevant tender is being carried out at the moment. The company offers the UH-1Y Venom helicopters in the Czech Republic. Bell is also willing to persuade Prague to acquire the AH-1Z gunships, in order to replace the Soviet-Made Mi-24/35 attack rotor-craft.


Potential acquisition of the Bell-manufactured helicopters both in Poland, within the scope of the Kruk programme, as well as in the Czech Republic, would create an opportunity to establish a joint maintenance and training centre for both states, since 85% of the components, including the instruments, displays and rotors, are interchangeable between the two designs - AH-1Z and UH-1Y.  
AH-1Z Simulator in Ostrava

Why did not the AH-1Z Viper helicopter attend the Ostrava NATO Days event? According to Joel Best, ex-US Army helicopter pilot, and regional director of the Military Business Development Department of the Bell Helicopter Company, each example is delivered straight to the operational units of the US Marine Corps all around the world, making it possible to protect the US interests, and the interests of the US allies.

Instead, Bell brought a simulator of the AH-1 cockpit to the Ostrava airport, which made it possible to get fully acquainted with the capabilities offered by the helicopter, its digital avionics and weapons systems.  


Bell Helicopters - Polish and Czech Tenders

Bell Helicopter company, which started the development of the attack helicopters in general, currently offers its latest AH-1Z Viper design for the Polish Armed Forces. However, from the Polish point of view, the results of the Czech procurement initiatives is also very important. Bell offers the UH-1Y Venom helicopters for the Czech Armed Forces, in the tender, the aim of which is to deliver 12 light multi-role rotor-craft. However, it was also stressed that the US-based manufacturer is also very keen on selling the AH-1Z helicopters for Prague.

Ultimately, Prague is willing to acquire 30 - 35 helicopters, all of which are going to constitute a replacement for the Mi-8 and Mi-24 rotary-winged aircraft. Should a decision be made, that the Bell products are purchased both by Poland, as well as by the Czech Republic, it would be possible to establish a joint service and maintenance center for both states, since there are significant similarities between the AH-1Z and UH-1Y designs. Both designs share 85% of the components, including the avionics and the engine. Thus, the crews are using a single design of the simulator. The H-1 family helicopters are serviced with the use of the same toolkit, with 4 additional tools required to service the more advanced weapons systems fitted onto the AH-1Z Viper rotor-craft.

AH-1Z - US Marines’ Weapon of Choice - Reliability and Low Costs of Operation

AH-1Z Viper is an attack helicopter developed for the USMC, as a completely new design, loosely tied to the fuselage of the older variants of the Cobra helicopter. Test flight of the first rotor-craft of this type took place in 2000, in 2011 it was announced that the first US Marines unit flying the helicopter has reached the combat readiness status.

The assumption was to blend the combat capabilities, including utilization of the modern armament and electronics, with capabilities of carrying out operations in tough conditions or with limited resources. Expeditionary operations realized by the US Marine Corps often need to be realized in line with the above-mentioned profile.



Representatives of the Bell Helicopter company stress the fact that Viper was designed with years of experience gathered throughout the period, within which the H-1 family helicopters were operated, in mind. The designers were driven towards limited scope of the required logistical support. They were also willing to cut down the costs of operation, which is caused by the tactical concept of the US Marines formation which assumes that the helicopters are going to be used in case of the expeditionary deployments, thus a high level of the design’s autonomy must be provided. The helicopter - with a minimum parts inventory and a few persons of personnel - is capable of carrying out operations autonomously for 90 days, e.g. using the forward operating bases abroad, or operating from the ships, in the maritime conditions.

These properties made the Bell helicopter a perfect choice for the USMC, since the unit values highly its reliability and easiness of maintenance. The above mentioned features also make it possible to significantly cut down the long-term operational costs of the AH-1Z helicopter. Usually, a single AH-1Z helicopter spends ca. 6 hours in the air per day, serving in the US Marine Corps. On average, each example accumulates 200 to 250 flight hours per a single year.

Weapons for the “Viper”

M197 20 mm three-barrell cannon constitutes the fixed armament of the helicopter. Six hardpoints (including four universal ones) make it possible to equip the helicopter with the AGM-114 Hellfire air to ground guided missiles, pods with unguided 70 mm missiles, or their guided APWKS II derivative. The hardpoints may also be used to add additional fuel tanks, prolonging the helicopter’s range. The end of the wingtips may be used to mount the IR-guided AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.

The plan assumes that the helicopter is going to become capable of using the AIM-9X Block I missiles, used by thee Polish F-16 jets. This is going to happen until 2021. The manufacturer also assumes that the Viper is going to be integrated with other weapons systems, including the Spike missiles, should such need be declared by the potential users. The helicopter may use the armament also when it is carrying the external fuel tanks.



AH-1Z Viper is fitted with an integrated Target Sight System, manufactured by the Lockheed Martin company. This suite has been developed for this helicopter, and it is embedded and mounted in a stabilized, rotating unit, at the front of the fuselage. The system is used to carry out operations in any weather conditions, at night and during the day.

3-gen FLIR system is also fitted with a TV camera and laser rangefinder/target designator, along with independent inertial system which is used to increase precision of observing and geographically locating the potential targets. As the representatives of the Bell Helicopters company claim, the range of the system exceeds the range of the Hellfire ATGM. This makes it possible to detect and identify the targets well before they are in the range of fire.

The above-mentioned fire-control system is fully integrated with the Glass Cockpit avionics. It is tailored to be used with the 3-gen night vision devices, complemented by the helmet-mounted Thales TopOwl displays, presenting the most important information gathered by the sensors of the helicopter.

Pilot and Weapons System Officer – Same Cockpit

The cockpit is unified which makes it possible for the crew to switch their roles - as it is indicated by the Bell Helicopter representatives, the above eliminates the classic division between the pilot and the weapons systems operator. This capacity is used by the US Marines Corps. US Marines have been using a reversed configuration of the AH-1Z Viper cockpit for a year now. The pilot sits at the front, since the front seat provides better visibility, particularly in front and down directions, throughout all of the phases of the flight.

Engine and Performance

The helicopter is fitted with two General Electric T700-GE-401C turboshaft engines with a cruise power (30 minutes) output of 1800 horsepower, and temporary power output (2.5 minutes) of 1940 horsepower. The main rotor (14.6 meters in diameter) and the tail rotor are four bladed, the blades are made out of composite materials.

Top speed of the AH-1Z helicopter is 370 kilometers per hour, cruise speed is 257 kilometers per hour. Operational ceiling reaches 6100 meters, while operational payload is close to 3 tonnes. In case of the standard payload (8 hellfire missiles, 14 2.75 inch HE rockets, 650 20 mm rounds, 120 flares) and internal fuel, AH-1Z is capable of covering the distance of 575 kilometers. Two external fuel tanks expand the range to more than 800 kilometers (more than 4.6 hours of flight endurance), they may be used during the combat sorties. Using four external fuel tanks makes it possible to cover more than 1200 kilometers.

Battlefield Survivability

Low profile and low weight (5406 kg of dry weight and 8392 kg of maximum weight) improve the maneuverability of the helicopter, raising the level of battlefield survival rate. In order to enhance the helicopter’s survivability, Viper is equipped with the devices that reduce the thermal signature of the engines, along with the self-sealing fuel tanks, landing gear and seats that absorb the impact energy. Finally, the helicopter is covered with a radar absorbent paint. Moreover, the designers also enhanced the protection of the powerplant. The most important systems are additionally doubled. The helicopter structure makes it possible for the Viper to survive even if it is hit with a 23 mm cannon round.

AH-1Z also features an integrated self-defence suite. The system includes the APR-39B(V2) radar warning receiver, AAR-47 missile warning system, and AVR-2A laser warning receiver, along with chaffs and flares dispenser.

Users

So far, the US Marine Corps is the only user of the AH-1Z helicopter. The Marines have received 39 out of 189 ordered examples of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters. Another 19 rotor-craft are scheduled to be delivered for the Pakistani armed forces, along with 15 examples of the UH-1Y rotary-winged aircraft. Australia is also engaged in the talks related to potential acquisition of the AH-1Z attack helicopters.


AH-1Z - Successor of the Polish and Czech Mi-24 Hinds?

AH-1Z Viper design is based on 50 years of experience within the area of the attack helicopters, gathered by the Bell company, assuming that a high level of reliability, limited maintenance needs and limited costs of acquisition and operation are achieved.

The helicopter also has quite strong armament at its disposal (up to 16 Hellfire II or Spike ATGW’s), also within the scope of the anti aircraft weapons. All of the above is complemented with an advanced avionics suite. Viper may turn out to be an interesting choice for the Polish Army.

Potential selection of the H-1 family helicopters, which may be made by the Czechs, would make it possible to start additional military cooperation between Poland and the Czech Republic. This cooperation would surely reduce the costs of training and operation of the newly acquired gunships. However, this is - to a significant degree - dependent on the decisions made by the Czech Armed forces, within the scope of selecting the multi-role helicopter, as well as on the choice which is going to be made by the Polish Ministry of Defence, within the scope of the Kruk programme.

During the Kiev defence expo, the Motor Sich company presented the armed variant of the Mi-2MSB helicopter, equipped with new engines and armament. All of the new elements have been indigenously manufactured in Ukraine.


Mi-2MSB is the proposed modernized variant of the Mi-2 helicopter. The modernization is visible mainly in the replacement of the GTD-350 engines with the AI-450M engines, manufactured by the Motor Sich company. With 465 HP of power output, the fuel consumption is 27% lower and the engines are 25 kg lighter than in case of the predecessor - the GTD-450 powerplant, power output of which was lower, at 400 HP. The helicopter’s avionics have also been upgraded. Ultimately, a digital system may be used here.

The Mi-2MSB-W variant of the helicopter is fitted with the weapons pylons. The new version was premiered during the exhibition of the Ukrainian defence industry, organized in Kiev. The hardpoints featured 8-rocket 80 mm B8W8MSB rocket launchers, along with the automatic grenade launcher pods, manufactured by the Motor Sich company. Other optional armament includes machine gun pods. The pods are mounted close to the fuselage, while the ammunition is provided from the inside of the cabin. This is easy to realize, since the armament pylons go through the rear windows of the helicopter, both of which have been replaced with special panels. This makes it easier to modify the craft. No significant changes are required to be implemented within the fuselage structure.

Additional 7.62 mm machine guns may be mounted in the windows. These weapons are operated by the crew-members. The helicopter has also been fitted with a flares dispenser under the tail-boom, along with an IR-jamming system - these elements provide at least partial protection from the infra-red guided anti-aircraft missiles, which are considered to be one of the most significant threats for the military helicopters. Wide use of MANPADS in the Eastern part of Ukraine led to significant losses in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The helicopter in this layout may be used to carry out supplementary tasks, or it may act as a light attack aircraft. However, if the Ukrainians are willing to create a full-value counterpart of the French Gazelle helicopters, which are known for cooperation with the Tiger attack rotor-craft, then the Mi-2SB-W design lacks the relevant, modern optronic systems. The presented configuration of the Ukrainian helicopter does not feature any modern targeting, nor observation devices, which has a seriously limiting impact on its capabilities. The optronic sensor is one of the proposed elements of the prospective modernization, related to modification of the avionics, which - in a long run - is also going to make it possible to equip the Mi-2MSB helicopter with the guided air-to-surface and air-to-air missiles.

It should be stressed that Mi-2MSB is the first step of the advanced modernization programme, planned by the Motor-Sich company. MSB-2 programme assumes that the helicopter is going to be fitted with a new, front part of fuselage made out of the composites. Secondly, the avionics suite is going to be replaced with a fully digital, western-made system. Finally, a new powerplant based on the AI-450M engines and a new main gearbox, is going to be installed, and the whole system is going to be capable of transferring more power to the main rotor.

All of the above-listed changes are going to significantly improve the performance of this very popular helicopter. At the moment, the maximum take-off weight of the Mi-2 helicopter is 3.7 tonnes. The new gearbox manufactured by the Motor-Sich company, along with the Mi-2MSB powerplant, the maximum take-off weight is going to be increased, up to 4.3 tonnes. For a helicopter that is so little, 600 kilograms increase in the maximum take-off weight is a significant improvement of the overall performance. This will make it possible for the military variant to carry - besides the 2-man crew - up to 8 soldiers or twice as much armament, in comparison with the currently used version of the helicopter.

The Motor-Sich company is interested in cooperation with the PZL Świdnik facility within the scope of the aforesaid programme, since the Polish manufacturer is in possession of full production documentation. PZL-Świdnik also has the credentials required in order to modify the Mi-2 helicopters.

Motor-Sich is planning to offer the Mi-2MSB, and MSB-2 helicopters on the export markets, primarily in Asia and Africa, where significant quantity of the Mi-2 rotary-wing aircraft still remains in the active service.

The AI-450M engine performance also should not be overlooked, since its capabilities at high temperatures and altitudes are significantly better than they are in case of the Russian counterparts. The engine lifetime is also significantly longer.

Nonetheless,it is the Ukrainian National Guard command that is genuinely interested in the combat Mi-2MSB-W variant of the helicopter. The unit is willing to acquire the modernized rotorcraft next year, according to the declarations. At the moment, the National Guard is operationally using three Mi-8MSB-W helicopters, all of which were modernized at the Motor Sich facility.
