First 5 ATAK choppers ready for combat
The Turkish General Staff has announced that the first five attack and tactical reconnaissance helicopters have been added to its arsenal during a presentation of the choppers to the press.
The first five choppers were presented to the public at the Land Forces Aviation Command located in Güvercinlik Military Airport in Ankara. Speaking to the press on Friday, Lt. Col. Aydın Lafçı said five ATAK T/129 choppers were delivered to the General Staff after test flights were conducted by the Land Forces Command over the past four-and-a-half months. “Five choppers have been added to the arsenal of the General Staff. In the coming weeks, another four choppers will be added,” Lafçı said.
After a brief introduction of the specifications of the ATAK T/129, there were demonstration flights, which received the thumbs up from spectators. The choppers, which will be stationed in Ankara, will take to the field to engage in fights against terrorists in the future. “The choppers can carry 76 missiles, among which include antitank missiles. Important components of the choppers, such as security and defense systems, were also produced locally,” he added.

(Games of Thrones notamment interdite)

Turkish submarine heads to Cape Greco, baffles NATO
CYPRUS - FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE • Tuesday, 11 November, 2014 A Turkish submarine abruptly left manoeuvres during a NATO exercise and sailed off the eastern coast of Cyprus near Cape Greco, reports local TV station Sigmalive.
The sub sailed near "blocks 3 and 13 of the Cyprus EEZ passed between Cypriot boats and foreign ships”, the channel reported.
The submarine was taking part in "Blue Whale", a NATO naval military exercise, which started Monday in the Mediterranean.
Submarines, frigates and naval air elements are participating in the exercise which includes submarine-warfare manoeuvres.
The channel cited unnamed NATO sources that were apparently ‘irked’ by the sudden unannounced Turkish action.
There has been no comment from the government in Nicosia.

Turkey orders 15 additional single-engine turboprop Korean aircraft for $150M
South Korea's Korea Aerospace Industries is hoping to seal a $150 million deal with Turkey to deliver 15 additional indigenously-made KT-1T single-engine turboprop aircraft to Turkish air force. An official from Korea Aerospace Industries, the nation’s sole aircraft manufacturer, said, “We have agreed with the Turkish government to export 15 KT-1 aircraft and the contract will be signed as early as next week.”
The two-seat jet KT-1T (Korean Trainer-1 Turkey) is a variant of the first indigenously developed Korean aircraft, the KT-1 Woongbee basic trainer. In 2007, the state-funded KAI agreed with Turkey to deliver 40 upgraded versions of the KT-1 Woongbee starting from 2010 for $350 million.

Turkey receives second A400M aircraft from Airbus
Turkey has received its second A400M tactical transport aircraft from the Airbus consortium, the country’s top defense industry procurement body has announced.
“Delivery of our MSN0013 aircraft, with the tail number 14-0013, the second of 10 aircraft to be procured within the content of the A400M Strategic Transport Aircraft Program organized by our undersecretariat, has been completed as of Dec. 22, 2014,” the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) said in a written statement released late on Dec. 23.
Following the handover which was formalized at Airbus’s final assembly line in Seville, the aircraft landed in the 12th Air Transportation Main Base Command in Erkilet in the Central Anatolian province of Kayseri earlier on Dec. 23, the defense body said.
Turkey finally accepted its first A400M aircraft in April, ending a months-long controversy over whether the aircraft met technical specifications.
Airbus, a European multinational aerospace and defense corporation, has been contracted to supply 10 four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft to Turkey.
Apart from Turkey, the aircraft has also been ordered by the air forces of Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Spain and the UK.
Turkey is a 5.5 percent shareholder in the A400M program, with Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. (TUSAŞ) supplying fuselage and wing parts for the plane to Bremen, Germany and Filton, England for integration before final assembly in Seville, Spain.

Turkey's Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) announced in December 2013 that it selected Sedef shipyard as winner of its LPD tender and that final contract negotiations with this shipyard could begin. Sedef shipyard in Turkey offers a design based on Juan Carlos LHD under the collaboration with Spain's Navantia.
Landing Platform Dock Project According to SSM, the Landing Platform Dock Project (LPD)’s main purpose is the acqusition of one Landing Platform Dock in order to meet the operational requirements of Turkish Naval Forces. The scope of the procurement is for: - 1 LPD and - Four Landing Craft Mechanics (LCM) - Twenty seven Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAV), - Two Landing Craft Personnel Vehicles (LCVP), - One Commander Boat - One RHIB (Rubber Hull Inflated Boat) will be acquired
One of the requirement was for a Privately Owned Turkish Shipyard to be main contractor, also responsible for design, construction, integration and tests and final performance.
The other proposals which were rejected were: RMK Marine Shipyard offering its own indigenous design and Desan shipyard offering a design based on South Korea's Dokdo class. At the early stage of the tender a Chinese company submitted its design proposal but then backed away.

Juan Carlos class LHD The multi-purpose Strategic Projection Ship "Juan Carlos I" is the largest naval unit ever built in Spain. Her NATO denomination is LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock). In June 2007, Australia announced it would purchase and build two ships of the same design to become the Canberra-class landing helicopter docks.
The ship has been designed for 4 mission profiles: - Amphibious ship transporting a Marine Corps Force for landings and land support operations. - Force projection ship transporting Army forces to any theatre of operations. - Aircraft-carrier - Non-combatant operations: humanitarian aid, evacuation from crisis zones and hospital-ship in catastrophe areas.
The crew consists of 261 people: 30 officers, 49 NCOs, 59 leading seamen and 123 ratings.

German government agrees to keep Patriot missiles in Turkey until 2016
(Reuters) - Germany's cabinet on Wednesday agreed to keep two German Patriot missile batteries in southern Turkey for another year, where they are deployed as part of a NATO mission to defend Turkey's border with Syria.
The mandate, which needs approval from parliament, allows a maximum of 400 German soldiers to serve in NATO-member Turkey until January 2016.
The United States, Germany and the Netherlands all deployed Patriots in early 2013, after Turkey asked NATO for help protecting its territory as civil war in Syria intensified. Shells fired from Syrian territory frequently land in Turkey.
The Dutch will end their participation at the end of January and will be replaced by Spanish units.

Turkey to order four more F-35 fighter jets
Turkey has decided to order four more of Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighter jets in addition to the two it previously ordered, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said on Wednesday.
Turkey said in 2012 it was sticking to plans to buy 100 of the planes with an initial order of two planes for delivery in 2015.
"It is planned that Turkey will buy 100 F-35 warplanes as part of the project. We previously ordered two in this framework. We have now decided to order four more," Davutoğlu said after a meeting with Turkey's Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM).
The plane is being developed and built by Lockheed Martin Corp for the US military and allies in a $399 billion project, the world's most expensive weapons program.
The F-35 is intended to deliver advanced stealth capabilities, improved maneuverability and high-tech sensors, but the program has struggled with delays and budget overruns.
Davutoğlu also said the decision was taken at the meeting to continue talks on Turkey's planned long-range missile system project.
In September, President Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey was in talks with France on purchasing such a defense system after disagreements with China, which was originally awarded the tender.
US and NATO officials have said Turkish collaboration with China on the system would have raised questions about compatibility of weaponry and security
After having already ordered six helicopters, the Turkish military will purchase another five CH-47F heavy duty helicopters from the US. The total cost of the 11 helicopters will run around $1 billion. During Davutoğlu's meeting, the decision was made to develop an entirely Turkish fighter jet; however defense bureaucrats do not believe that a prototype will be finished before 2023. One of Turkey's goals for the centennial of the Turkish Republic was the production of its own fighter plane.
