Turkey deploys missile and artillery systems near the border with Syria.
A large number of military convoys carrying missile systems and artillery out from Ankara have reached the Syrian border province of Kilis. Turkish Special Forces Commander Major General Intelligence Aksakalli received information on a last minute check, July 5, 2015.
They have taken up positions in the Elbeyli and Öncüpinar districts along the border.
A battalion belonging to the 4th Commando Brigade stationed in the eastern province of Tunceli had also been redeployed to the border last week. Currently there are 54,000 military personnel deployed along the border with Syria, corresponding to 15 percent of the Army’s total troop count.
Turkish Armed Forces’ (TSK) Special Forces Commander Major General Sezai Aksakal arrived in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa on Sunday to inspect the special forces unit known as the Maroon Berets and to be briefed on other units stationed in the area.
The commanders of armored and motorized units deployed along the border, as well as those of the Bolu and Kayseri commando brigades that might be used for a possible cross-border operation into Syria, have been summoned to a meeting at TSK Headquarters in Ankara later on this week.
During this meeting, it was also discussed the possibility for the deployment of over 400 armored personnel carriers, protected by signal jammers, against the mines and improvised explosive devices (IED) laid out by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The role of the Turkish Air Force in supporting such an operation is also expected to be discussed.

Turkey To Buy Reconnaissance Aircraft By Burak Ege Bekdil 7:33 p.m. EDT August 3, 2015
ANKARA — Turkey’s procurement authorities approved a new contract to acquire reconnaissance and observation aircraft.
The procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM), released a request for information (RfI) to which potential bidders must reply no later than Aug. 12.
The RfI specifies that the required aircraft will be “manned.”
It did not specify the number of aircraft to be acquired. But procurement sources said a total of five aircraft would be purchased.
The Turkish military expects the planned aircraft to support its unmanned aircraft in reconnaissance missions. The aircraft will be operated by Turkish land forces.
The contract will require aircraft and their systems integration, including electro-optical sensors, systems operators and data links, plus logistical support.
One industry source said the overall contract price would be around $50 million for all five aircraft, excluding logistical support services.
The Turkish military earlier operated a fleet of leased Beechcraft King Air aircraft for reconnaissance purposes.
Industry sources widely expect the required system to be outfitted to the same or similar line of aircraft.

ANKARA — Turkey's Air Force and procurement authorities approved a program to upgrade a batch of 25 F-16 Block 30 aircraft, officials here said.
The upgrade program for the oldest model of F-16 fighters is designed as a stop-gap solution until Turkey has built its own indigenous fighter jet or the initial deliveries under the multinational Joint Strike Fighter program have begun to arrive.
The Block 30 aircraft to be upgraded were delivered to the Turkish Air Force between 1988 and 1990. Most of the aircraft are about to complete their flight life of 8,000 hours.
The program is being administered by the procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM), will be planned by Tusas Turkish Aerospace Industries and carried out at an Air Force repair and maintenance center.
Officials say most of the upgrade work will involve structural and body improvements.
Turkey hopes its indigenous fighter will make its maiden flight in 2023.
Turkey also is a partner in the JSF consortium that builds the new-generation fighter F-35. Turkey plans to buy at least 100 F-35s.

FNSS completes Saber 25 trials
Nicholas de Larrinaga, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly 13 August 2015
FNSS has completed qualification tests of its new Saber 25 one-man armoured vehicle turret, the Turkish combat vehicle and weapon system company announced on 13 August.
The trials were conducted from 22-26 June at the Turkish Ministry of National Defence's Konya Karapinar range. For the trials the turret was fitted to an FNSS Pars infantry fighting vehicle, and included stationary and mobile firings of both the turret's stabilised ATK M242 25 mm dual-feed cannon and its coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun.
Saber 25 was unveiled by FNSS at IDEX 2015 in February, and is based on its experience with its Sharpshooter turrets. Compared with Sharpshooter, Saber offers 60% more internal volume with only a 10% increase in external dimensions.

Last of Batch of Nine T129s Delivered to Turkish Army By Burak Ege Bekdil 10:37 a.m. EDT August 17, 2015
ANKARA — The last in a batch of nine early entry packages of T129 attack helicopters was recently delivered to the Turkish Army, the local manufacturer said Aug. 17.
Tusas Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), maker of the T129 under license from the Italian-British company AgustaWestland, said that the chopper was delivered to the Turkish Army on July 31.
TAI started to deliver the T129 to the Turkish Army in April 2014. Under the full program, a batch of 59 helicopter gunships will be delivered. TAI officials say T129 features 97 percent sovereign production.
The Turkish Army deploys the T129 gunships at its southeastern military bases in Turkey to support anti-terror operations against Kurdish rebels fighting for autonomy.
The T129 choppers are Turkey’s first locally made platforms under license. The attack and reconnaissance helicopters are outfitted with an arsenal of Hellfire missiles and guided rockets.
In addition to the Turkish Army, TAI hopes to sell the T129 to foreign markets.

Turkish troops killed in bomb attack in Siirt province 38 minutes ago From the section Europe
Eight Turkish soldiers have been killed in a bomb attack in the south-eastern province of Siirt, the army says. The bomb exploded on a highway as a military vehicle was passing. Seven more soldiers were wounded. No-one said they carried out the attack, but the army blamed it on Kurdish PKK militants. Four troops died in gun battles with the PKK in Diyarbakir province. The attacks come amid a wave of violence after a two-year truce failed. Separately, two people have been arrested after gunfire was heard outside Istanbul's iconic Dolmabahce Palace, which houses offices of the prime minister. One policeman was slightly injured in the attack and a third suspect is being sought, the Turkish Anadolu news agency reported. A statement from the Istanbul governor's office said the attackers were from a "terrorist group" and that they had previously carried out an attack on the Istanbul HQ of the ruling AK party on 8 August. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was in Ankara at the time of the attack.

Friday, 21 August 2015 Turkish army upgrades its armored vehicles in the aftermath of a landmine blast The Turkish government and army have agreed on upgrading its armored vehicles in the aftermath of a landmine blast which caused the death of soldiers inside a lightly armored vehicle in Turkey’s southeast.
The decision to upgrade its fleet of armored vehicles came in yesterday’s security meeting headed by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, where the defense industry was on the agenda.
Gen. Hulusi Akar attended the meeting as General Chief of Staff for the first time.
The number of Kirpi vehicles, a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, will be increased. The armored Kobra, which is less resistant to mines, is more often used by the army during the transportation of personnel in regions where terror activities are on the rise. On Aug. 19, eight soldiers were killed inside a Kobra-type armored vehicle in the Pervari district of southeastern Siirt province when a remote controlled landmine was detonated by outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants.
The Turkish army owns more than 600 Kirpi vehicles.
Kirpi vehicles can accommodate up to 13 personnel and can move over any ground condition at a maximum speed of 105 kilometers per hour. New jammers are also going to be bought.
The purchase of more MRAP vehicles, used by the U.S. army to withstand improvised explosive device (IED) attacks and ambushes, was also discussed. These vehicles were widely used in Iraq and Afghanistan by U.S. soldiers.

Turkish Defense is buying 30 Drones for Police Forces Turkey’s defense procurement agency launched a process to buy 15 drones from the state Turkish Aerospace Industry (TAI) and 15 from Istanbul-based developer Baykar Makine, for use by police forces.
Twelve of the newly purchased drones are considered “urgent.” Hurryet Daily News reported on Agust 21. The police had declared that it needs operative and tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to be used against rising terror attacks, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) said.
Efforts in cooperation with the police, has begun to purchase 15 operative ANKA UAVs, a domestic vehicle developed by the TAI, and 15 tactical Bayraktar UAVs, developed by Baykar.
The acquisition plans also cover buying five task systems from each firm.
Two sets of ANKAs, totaling six drones, and two sets of Bayraktars, will be purchased urgently, while the remainder will be bought over years.
