RJR News / Cabinet has approved a five year re−capitalization project for the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). It will allow the JDF to replace obsolete and unserviceable V150 armoured cars in its fleet.

Under the project, the Jamaica Defence Force will acquire 12 Thales Australia Bushmaster armoured personnel carriers (APCs), to be used to assist other ministries, departments and agencies.

This was revealed in a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister Monday night. Currently the JDF has a complement of 14 Cadillac Gage V150s, 10 of which were acquired 37 years ago and the others in 1985.

Over the course of their service life the vehicles have been utilised in many high−risk situations such as internal security deployments while supporting the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). In addition they have been used in pre− and post−disaster response and rescue operations.

The Thales Bushmaster APC is designed for the urban operating environment, as well as rugged rural terrains and adverse conditions that exist in a major natural disaster such as an earthquake or hurricane.

Delivery of the Thales Bushmasters will begin in 2015.

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) unveiled a new Digital Combat Uniform (DCU) (designed and exclusively licensed from Hyperstealth) to replace the Disrupted Pattern Material (DPM) camouflage that soldiers have worn since 1992.

Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Antony Anderson, said said the new uniform has security features, which will ensure that it does not end up in the hands of criminals.

The new uniform, which will have both land and naval variations, is up to 50 per cent more effective at camouflaging troops than the outgoing DPM, as it blends more easily into both the urban and jungle-type terrain and coastal conditions in which the JDF operates.

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) later in November is to receive three more Bushmaster 4x4 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) from Thales Australia.

The vehicles are currently being shipped by sea, the company told IHS Jane's on 11 November, and are from a batch of 12 ordered via a November 2013 contract. A first batch of three arrived in June and second in August, with final set to arrive in January 2016.

The Bushmasters are replacing V150 Commando 4x4 armoured cars purchased in 1976 and 1985.

Thales Australia has already delivered training, spares, and support equipment - the contract includes a five-year support package.

On Wednesday January 13, 2016 a new tool was added to the arsenal of the Jamaica Defence Force with the addition of the Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle. Following a brief opening and commissioning ceremony at Up Park Camp, the new PMVs were added to the fleet of armoured vehicles in the JDF. The event was attended by the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Honorable Portia Simpson Miller, as well both the Minister of National Security and the Minister of Finance and the Public Service. Representatives of THALES, the producers of the Bushmaster platform and other invited guests were also in attendance. More to follow.

The 2016 Force March and Shoot Competition was held last Saturday February 6, at the Twickenham Park Gallery Range, Spanish Town. The event lived up to its reputation of displaying top marksmanship skills and fierce competition, with family and friends proving a supporting cast. In the end, two-time defending champions the Second Battalion The Jamaica Regiment were again victorious, securing their third consecutive victory with 241 points. Second was The Jamaica Defence Force Air Wing, with 227 points, and in third place, the warriors of the Combat Support Battalion who scored 219 points. Here are some highlights.

Today, I along with Head of the Jamaica Defence Force Major General Rocky Meade inspected two Bell 429 Global Ranger Helicopters which were ordered by my Administration in December 2017 and arrived at the JDF Air Wing last night (Friday). The helicopters are part of our wider initiative to replace the aging 20+ year fleet of the JDF and increase its response capabilities.
Aside from the genuine need to modernize, the intensity of the hurricane season last year prompted the government to make the acquisitions a priority and placed the orders precisely that they would arrive at the beginning of the Hurricane Season.
These assets will enhance the JDF’s ability to execute emergency rescue, medical, airlift, firefighting and other duties as needed.

Jamaica has received a Beechcraft King Air 350 WR maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) and two Bell 429 helicopters to improve surveillance of the Caribbean island’s territory. The platforms will be part of the newly created Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Maritime Air and Cyber Command.

A press release by the Jamaica Information Service issued in mid-November noted that these are the first two out of nine Bell helicopters to arrive. “The aircraft were acquired through collaborations with Sierra Nevada Corporation, Textron Aviation, and Bell,” the agency noted.

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) is aiming to grow from 6,000 troops up to 10,000 in order to expand the service's footprint on the island.

In addition to growing the size of the force, Kingston is building new facilities for the JDF. The Ministry of National Security announced in late January that new barracks have been constructed in Montego Bay, which now houses the JDF's Second Battalion.

The JDF has become increasingly involved in internal security, as it helps the Jamaican police crack down on criminal activity. The chief of the JDF's defence staff Lieutenant General Rocky Meade, however, stated during a during a 15 March meeting at the offices of the Jamaican daily newspaper The Gleanerthat he wants "to increase the size of the force, but also to have a robust number of troops permanently located in three regions of the country".

La Jamaïque a décidé de se tourner vers Thales afin de s'équiper de radars Coast Watcher 100.

Thales a annoncé le 8 avril avoir remporté un contrat avec la force de défense jamaïcaine afin de fournir au pays des radars Coast Watcher 100, qui seront employés pour la surveillance maritime. Le contrat comprend également la fourniture de capteurs électro-optiques, de radios et d'un centre de contrôle. L'acquisition de ce type de systèmes permettra de renforcer les moyens de la Jamaïque pour la surveillance de son littoral et pour la « prévention des activités maritimes illégales », rapporte Thales.

Le radar Coast Watcher permettra à la force de défense jamaïcaine de réaliser une surveillance accrue de son espace maritime à travers la détection de cibles variées. « Ce système permet une surveillance maritime avancée, avec des capacités optimales de détection et de poursuite de cibles rapides et manoeuvrantes, évoluant dans des environnements difficiles (haute mer, pluie, etc) ainsi que des cibles aériennes volant à basse altitude », détaille l'industriel français.

Désormais chargée de fournir des systèmes radars pour l'environnement maritime, Thales a d'ores et déjà contribué au renforcement des moyens de surveillance de la Jamaïque avec l'installation de radars et de centres de contrôle dédiés à la gestion de l'espace aérien.

The purchase of 6 additional Bushmasters, 3 troops carrier and 3 ambulance versions, brings its fleet to 18, significantly strengthening the JDF’s ability to fight crime while simultaneously keeping its soldiers protected and comfortable. This substantial purchase confirms the Bushmaster’s outstanding performance in JDF services over the past five years.

The Bushmaster is an 11-tonne, 4x4 blast and ballistic protected mobility vehicle with a 4-tonne payload. This multifaceted, combat-proven vehicle is specially designed to protect and transport up to ten people in extreme environments and hostile territory. The Bushmaster saves lives on and off-road, providing an excellent balance of protection, mobility, space and cost that is well proven in service to many nations around the world.

The new vehicles for Jamaica offer special features including fully integrated Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) that provide power and supplementary air conditioning when the engine is off. This allows static vehicles to maintain a comfortable temperature in the hot Jamaican climate. As the ambulance versions will give soldiers the ability to evacuate and treat injured police officers under the protection of the Bushmaster rather than having to deploy vulnerable unarmored vehicles into dangerous situations.

Bell 505 delivery to Jamaica Defence Force

On 11 May 2021, Bell Textron Inc. announced the 300th Bell 505 Jet Ranger X delivery. On 10 February 2021, Scramble magazine reported that the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) had ordered six Bell 505s.

The JDF Air Wing continues its expansion programme with the latest acquisition. After the purchase in 2018 of two additional Bell 206B-3s for the Caribbean Military Aviation School (CMAS), and an additional Bell 412 and nine Bell 429s, the next purchase was for the Bell 505.

The new helicopters will be used for training and security roles. The four high visibility Bell 505s, serials JDF H-46 to JDF H-49, will be operated by CMAS at Kingston/Norman Manley International. The two olive drab painted ones, serials JDF H-50 and JDF H-51, will be used at Kingston - Up Park Camp with the 2nd Flight or 3rd Flight. According to a press release published by Damen Shipyards on November 22, 2021, a Damen SPa 4207, the second vessel in an order of four Damen vessels for the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard, has been officially handed over in Kingston, Jamaica.

Construction on the vessel had already begun when the global pandemic struck and the rapid spread of the virus meant that upon completion of the vessel, pandemic travel restrictions made it unfeasible to arrange a crew to deliver her on own keel since the crew would not be permitted to return to their home countries once they arrived in Jamaica.

Not to be deterred, the Damen Services vessel delivery teams worked to devise an alternative arrangement. The vessel left Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam, not on her own keel as is usual for this model, but onboard the BBC Congo, a heavy transport vessel.

Once final checks had been made, the BBC Congo, and her precious cargo, sailed East across the South Pacific and through the Panama Canal, before arriving, just under two months later, in Kingston, Jamaica.

On the morning of her arrival, the JDF’s new vessel was offloaded and, with a support fleet of smaller craft, was delivered to its base nearby.

The four-vessel contract between Damen and the JDF saw the delivery of an FCS 5009 Patrol in 2020. Another SPa 4207 and a second FCS 5009 Patrol will be delivered in the years to come.

The Dutch shipbuilding firm The Damen Group designs and manufactures a range of patrol vessels, of various sizes, including the Damen Stan 4207 Patrol Vessels. The Damen Stan patrol vessel designs' names include a four-digit code, where the first two digits are the vessel's length, in metres, and the second two digits are its width.

The Stan Patrol 4207 has a length of 42.8 m (140.4 ft) and a beam of 7.1 m (23.3 ft), she can reach a top speed of 26 knots (48 km/h).
