MOSCOU, 16 juin - RIA Novosti

MOSCOU, 16 juin - RIA Novosti

Russia Merges AF With Missile Defense, Space Commands
By Matthew Bodner 11:12 a.m. EDT August 8, 2015

MOSCOW — In a bid to streamline Russia's air and space defenses in the face of what Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu characterized as “a shift in the combat 'center of gravity' toward the aerospace theater,” the Defense Ministry has merged several branches of the military into a new Aerospace Force.

“Air forces, anti-air and anti-missile defenses, and space forces will now be under a unified command structure,” Shoigu was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying, two days after President Vladimir Putin authorized the merger of the three military branches Aug. 1.

The merger represents an evolution in Russian military thinking, as the Soviets historically treated air and space as separate theaters of war, and separated command authority for the Air Force, air defenses and space assets among different command structures with little, if any, overlap.

Shoigu described the merger as “the best option for streamlining our nation's system of air and space defenses” to better combat what Russia sees as growing threats from both air and space — treating the two mediums as a single theater of war for the first time in Russian military history.

Gen. Evgenzy Buzhinsky, a former member of Russia's General Staff, told Defense News that embracing the idea of an aerospace theater is a basic tenet of modern warfare, and organizationally the separation of the Air Force, Air Defense and Space Command was “absolutely obsolete.”

“We are lagging behind in many spheres, but we are catching up,” he said.

Ongoing Overhaul

Creation of Russia's Aerospace Force builds upon an earlier marriage of Russia's air-defense forces and the space forces in 2011 into a new branch of the military known as the Aerospace Defense Forces (ADF). The ADF was tasked with defending Russian airspace from airborne and space-borne attacks, and was billed as a new contingent of the Russian military apparatus.

The force was to be equipped with new S-400 air defense systems — substantial upgrades to the S-300 system — and the still-in-development S-500 air and missile defense system.

A reported 20 percent of Putin's sweeping decade-long 20 trillion ruble (US $316.8 billion) rearmament and modernization program was set aside to pay for the new defense systems for the ADF.

Taken as a whole, Putin's modernization campaign, launched in 2011, is intended to replace up to 70 percent of Russia's military hardware with new, advanced gear by 2020 to boost military capabilities across all branches of the Russian armed forces.

“Its the same logic that motivated the US to consolidate commands under the Air Force long ago, but it's also a part of the process of reforming Russia's armed forces,” said Buzhinsky, who is now the chairman of the board of directors at the Moscow-based PIR Center think tank.

With or without Russia's current standoff with NATO amid the Ukraine crisis, these reforms would have gone through, Buzhinsky argued, though as with all Russian military decisions lately it is envisioned as a means to counter what Moscow considers to be the threat posed by the US and NATO to Russian national security and strategic interests.

Countering NATO?

The creation of Russia's Aerospace Force comes hot on the heels of another major shift in Russian military thinking — the amendment of Russia's naval doctrine in late July to prioritize countering NATO expansion toward Russian borders and interests.

The doctrine enshrined the creation of a new Russian blue water Navy to project force into the Atlantic Ocean. This involves strengthening the Northern Fleet's position in the Arctic, which is the only region from which Russian forces can enter the Atlantic unhindered by NATO.

Though the doctrine also calls for strengthening the Baltic and Black Sea fleets, these forces have to pass through NATO-controlled waters to enter the Atlantic.

The Aerospace Force appears to be similarly focused on countering NATO forces, albeit with a more pronounced defensive posture. Though the new branch appears to take organizational cues from the US Air Force by merging forces operating above the ground under one roof, the Strategic Rocket Forces were left out of the Aerospace Force.

The Strategic Rocket Forces operate Russia's land-based nuclear missiles, which suggests a defensive orientation to the new force.

However, Buzhinsky explained the exclusion of the Strategic Rocket Forces as a matter of habit. As Russia's most important military asset, the nuclear missile forces have always been under their own command and will remain independent from the Aerospace Force, he said.

In fact, an unidentified Defense Ministry source quoted by news agency Interfax said that the obvious reason for the reorganization was to better prepare to defend against hypersonic missiles developed under the US Prompt Global Strike program.

Russian Navy Third Project 11356 Frigate Admiral Makarov Launched by Yantar shipyard

The Yantar shipyard in Russia’s Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad last week floated out the second in a series of six Project 11356 frigates being built for the Black Sea Fleet, the company said. "The Project 11356 Admiral Makarov escort ship is the third in the family of six frigates being constructed by the Kaliningrad shipbuilders for the Russian Navy", Mikhailov, the company’s press officer told Russian news agency TASS.

The Admiral Makarov was designed by the Severnoye Design Bureau in St. Petersburg and laid down by Yantar on February 29, 2012.

"To date, the frigate’s hull has been manufactured and most of the systems and assemblies have been installed", the shipyard’s press officer said. The Admiral Makarov is slated for delivery in 2016.

The first two ships in the series - the Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Essen - are in trials now. Their delivery to the Navy is planned for the fourth quarter of 2015. The series will enter service with Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

The Project 11356 frigate has a displacement of 4,000 tons, a speed of 30 knots, an endurance of 30 days and a crew of about 200. The ship’s weapons suite comprises extended-range cruise missiles, a 100-mm versatile gun, a Kortik surface-to-air missile system, 544-mm torpedo tubes, an RBU-6000 antisubmarine rocket launcher, and an antisubmarine helicopter as well.

The ship is designed for naval warfare both as part of a naval task force and independently. Its weapons allow elimination of hostile surface combatants and submarines, repel air attacks and provide fire support for amphibious landing.

Putin orders snap military exercise in central Russia
By Agence France-Presse -September 9, 2015

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday ordered snap checks on troop combat readiness in Russia’s central military district, the defence ministry said.

“According to the order, troops in the central district… are being brought into full combat readiness from 09:30 Moscow time (0630 GMT),” defence minister Sergei Shoigu said.

Russia has recently intensified snap checks of its military might, testing its capabilities from the Arctic to the Far East as relations with the West have plunged to a post-Cold War low over the Ukraine crisis.

The defence minister said the military exercises, which run to September 12, also involved paratroopers and military transport aviation as well as some aircraft from other military districts.

Russia’s central military district ranges from the regions around the Volga River to the Ural mountains and Siberia, while also including far northern Russia.

“We have to check the capabilities of paratroopers when they are deployed over large distances and their readiness to make landings on unknown aerodromes,” Shoigu said.

Shoigu said the latest wargames also involve civilians, including from the health and agriculture ministries, and are designed to test “their readiness to carry out their tasks in wartime conditions.”

Russia is gearing up for its largest war games of the year, Centre-2015, involving tens of thousands of troops, set for this autumn.

II UAVs for Russia
Russia has acquired new unmanned air vehicles from Israel, according to a report by the Russian newspaper Vedomosti, which is being reproduced by The Jerusalem Post newspaper.

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 37 Uav210

According to the report, the Russian Ministry of Defence has acquired 10 Israel Aerospace Industries Searcher UAVs. These will be assembled to the Ural Work Aviation factory in Russia.

The new UAVs will complement the existing fleet of 12, Israeli-made, Bird Eye 400, I-View Mk 150 and Searcher II, that were procured in 2011. The cost of that contract was at USD400 million and is estimated that it included a technology transfer, according to Media reports of that period.

These tactical drones are used for surveillance, reconnaissance, target acquisition and artillery fire adjustment. It is expected that some of them will be used at the borders with Ukraine, as according to past reports, one of them had been shot down by the Ukrainian Army.

The IAI Searcher II has a length of 5.85 m, a wingspan of 8.54 m. and a height of 1.25 m. The maximum speed is 200 km/h, the service ceiling is at 20,000 ft and the endurance is up to 18 hours. With a gross weight of 500 kg. it can carry a payload of 68 kg.

Russian Navy Black Sea Fleet Naval Aviation Receives Two More Sukhoi Su-30SM Fighters

The naval aviation of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has received two more Su-30SM multirole fighters, advanced aircraft designed to replace Su-24 tactical bombers currently the fleet's mainstay. Russia’s Black Sea Fleet had already received three Su-30SMs, the fleet's press office chief said.

Several more planes will be delivered, enabling an air squadron to be activated in the near future, Vyacheslav Trukhachov, fleet press office chief, said on Friday.

"The separate naval attack air regiment of the Black Sea Fleet has received two more Su-30SM sophisticated multirole fighters," the spokesman said. "The aircraft have arrived at their home station in the Crimea and are being prepared for flights under the advanced hardware familiarisation program."

The chief of naval aviation of the Russian Navy, Major General Igor Kozhin declared last month that his units are set to receive more than 50 Su-30SM by the year 2020.

According to Irkut Corporation, Su-30SM are super maneuverable twin engine jets, equipped with phased array radar, thrust vectoring engines and canards. The fighter is able to use modern "air-to-air" and "air-to-surface" high-precision weapons.

The Russian Navy Su-30SM are not intended for the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov but operate from naval aviation bases on land. They have a two-tone dark gray camouflage and bear a St. Andrew's flag (Russian Navy Ensign) painting by the cockpit.

Russia's advanced 2S19M2 self-propelled howitzer highlighted at RAE 2015

Entered in service in Russia's Armed Forces in 2013, the 2S19 M2 152 mm self-propelled howitzer is a new upgraded howitzer with enhanced performance characteristics and improved operational parameters. Highlighted on static display, the 2S19M2 is also performing an impressive live firing demonstration at Russian Arms Expo 2015.

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 37 Russia14

The new artillery self-propelled howitzer 2S19M2 "MSTA-S" has received several modifications compare to the previous version. The new version is equipped with a new automatic fire control system which increases the rate of fire up to 10 rpm. It includes automated unsighted gun laying and its restoration after each shooting. The "simultaneous fire attack" is a mode for simultaneous target hitting with several shells fired from one gun.
Digital electronic maps are now available which significantly speeds up the terrain orientation in difficult geographical conditions and allows performing faster and more efficiently firing missions.

To reduce its visibility, the new 2S19M2 uses a set of camouflage system to reduce the thermal heat of the vehicle and increase protection against radar, thermal and optical detection of more than 1.5 times, thereby reducing the effectiveness of high-precision weapons.

The upgraded 2S19M2 is also equipped with programmable complex of loading control KUMZ, and the upgraded system of laying and fire control dubbed ASUNO-M.

Crew comfort has been rethought as well, with an automated tank driver seat ARMV, a feeding and air conditioning unit AP18DM and a new Nakidka "cloak" set

The 2S19M2 self-propelled howitzer has a combat mass of 43.24 tons and is operated by a crew of 5 soldiers.

The 152 mm 2S19 MSTA-S self-propelled howitzer is designed to defeat unsheltered and covered manpower, weapons and materiel to division level. The 2S19 was accepted for service with the former Soviet Army in 1989.
The standard 2S19 can fire at a maximum range of 25 km with standard HE-FRAG projectile and 28.9 with rocket-assisted projectile. This artillery system is also able to fire Krasnopol and Krasnopol-M precision guided munitions, hitting screened point targets at a range of 20 km maximum.

Russian Army  to upgrade its T-90 main battle tanks, reported military-informant.com.

Russia is considering the possibility of upgrading T-90 main battle tanks  and improve their combat capabilities to the level of T-90MS.

T-90MS «Tagil» main battle tank, a Russian export version of the T-90M, which itself is a heavily upgraded T-90A.

The T-90MS well protected by the new Relikt ERA system. Although this export variant does not feature the Shtora APS in the configuration offered by UVZ, this element can also be added, should the Russian Army wish.

“We have about 400 tanks, set in the early 2000s. It’s been almost 12-15 years. They need to be updated. Therefore, we consider the issue of modernization of the tank fleet, “- said Deputy Russian Defense Minister Yuri Borisov at  RAE-2015 in Nizhny Tagil.

Russian Navy Nuclear Powered Missile Cruiser Pyotr Veliky Docked for Maintenance

Russia’s heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky (Kirov class) has been docked for repairs in the Murmansk Region in north-west Russia, Head of the Northern Fleet’s press service Captain 1st Rank Vadim Serga said on Monday. The ship will be repaired at the 82nd shipyard in the settlement of Roslyakovo, he added.

"The repairs of the ship will be completed by the beginning of a new training year when the Northern Fleet’s flagship is due to accomplish a set of scheduled combat training tasks in the sea," the officer said. The Northern Fleet reported in late August that the cruiser was planned to undergo repairs. Earlier, the Russian sole aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, also based in the North, underwent scheduled repairs.

Pyotr Veliky is the fourth Kirov class cruiser (and the only one operational today), a class of nuclear-powered warship of the Russian Navy. It is the largest and heaviest surface combatant warships after aircraft carriers currently in active operation in the world.

The Kirov class's main weapons are 20 P-700 Granit (SS-N-19 Shipwreck) missiles mounted in deck, designed to engage large surface targets. Air defense is provided by twelve octuple S-300F launchers with 96 missiles and a pair of Osa-MA batteries with 20 missiles each. Pyotr Veliky carries some S-300FM missiles and is the only ship in the Russian Navy capable of ballistic missile defence.

New Russian Tanks to Be Able to Fire in ‘Silent Monitoring’ Mode

Oleg Kulikov, a software engineer of the developer company Signal, said that earlier versions of the stabilizer consumed too much energy and led to the tank battery dying if used with the engine turned off

NIZHNY TAGIL (Sputnik) – A Russia-made new generation electromechanical arms stabilizer will allow new Russian tanks to fire from the turret in the "silent monitoring" mode, Oleg Kulikov, a software engineer of the developer company Signal, told RIA Novosti Saturday.

In the new stabilization system, a hydraulic actuator is replaced by an electrical one, according to Kulikov.

“This allows to radically — by 10-15 times — reduce the energy consumption and implement stabilizer in the so-called silent monitoring mode, when the gunner and the tank commander can rotate the turret to raise or to lower the gun and to fire without the engine working, solely on the tank battery’s energy,” the engineer stated.
According to Kulikov, earlier versions of the stabilizer consumed too much energy and led to the tank battery dying if used with the engine turned off.
The engineer said that the arms stabilizer will be used in the T-90MS tank, which is the latest export version of the T-90 tank, the main battle tank currently in service with the Russian Army.

Russia's newest Armata, Kurganets-25, Bumerang armored vehicles to be fielded in 2016

Military & Defense September 14, 13:23 UTC+3

MOSCOW, September 14. /TASS/. The new-generation Armata platform, medium platform-based Kurganets-25 tracked infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) and Bumerang wheeled armored personnel carrier (APC) will start their operational trials in 2016, Russian Army Commander-in-Chief Oleg Salyukov told journalists on Monday.

"The development of the advanced armored vehicles, such as the Armata-based tank and IFV, Kurganets-25 IFV and Bumerang APC, are on schedule. The efforts are planned for completion in 2016 along with the official trials," he said.
The service chief also said that small-batch deliveries of the hardware were planned for the same period to conduct operational test and evaluation.
The Armata is a commonized heavy platform that has served as a basis for a tank and an IFV. An armored recovery vehicle is being derived from it too.
The new tank has been furnished with an unmanned turret, all-digital controls and an isolated armored crew compartment. Its main armament is a 125-mm gun, but the introduction of a 152-mm gun sometime in the future is a possibility.
The Kurganets-25 platform is another novelty along with the heavy Armata, medium Bumerang and light Typhoon. The IFV derived from it was displayed in Moscow on May 9 during the Victory Day Parade. The platform is expected to spawn a 120-mm self-propelled artillery piece and a 57-mm antiaircraft gun system.
