Kielce - a window onto the world of armaments

The Targi Kielce's International Defence Industry Exhibition  - a record-breaking edition

This year's defense industry Expo was staged from 1 to 4 September 2014  - this has been a record-breaking trade show in every respect. The exhibition area, the number of visitors and the number of accompanying events exceeded all expectations.

The International Defence Industry Exhibition is the most important exhibition of the defense industry in Europe and the third largest trade show on the Old Continent; ranked after Paris and London. This year, for the first time in the expo history, the exhibition area exceeded 25,000 sqm. The expo was the showcase for over 500 exhibitors from 27 countries of the world, including  Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands , Turkey, Ukraine, USA. It comes as no surprise that the number of visitors was also record breaking - Targi Kielce hosted 15,000  guests. Once again the MSPO was held under the auspices of the Republic of Poland President Bronislaw Komorowski.

ZM Tarnów S.A. company is showcasing its observation-defensive LOOK container, featuring a remotely controlled weapons module, and an optronic device manufactured in Poland. The solution here is an easily transportable armoured module which may be used to create defensive systems defending the facilities such as military bases, airfields or outposts.

The LOOK station placed in a standard, 20-feet container, is used to secure and protect the soldiers who are executing the observation and defensive tasks in warfare conditions or during the peacekeeping operations. LOOK may become a part of a larger protection system, it may also function in an autonomous manner.

The LOOK container is protected from smalls arms fire, it is also fitted with large bulletproof glass-panes, along with the ZSMU remotely controlled weapons station manufactured by ZM Tarnów, complemented by observation and detection sensors. The daytime/night-time observation/targeting system is integrated with the armament (a .50 or .308 machine gun or a 40 mm grenade launcher). The system features TV camera and thermal-imaging device, along with a laser range-finder, all of which make it possible to accurately observe and position the targets.

The crew using the LOOK container may use other sensors, such as the radar or the thermal imaging devices independently from the container-utilized weaponry module and the optronic system, detecting, identifying and positioning the objects, persons and vehicles emerging in the supervised zone.
Each container may be fitted with:
•monitor station for observation and control for the watch commander,
•shooter/guard station, with control and observation desktop,
•communications suite,
•bulletproof windows on three sides,
•roof hatch for manual operation of the weapons station,
•air conditioning/heating system,
•optional emergency power supply system.

LOOK may be used to defend and protect areas and objects of high significance, such as airfields and airbases, logistics infrastructure or field camps.  The container may be used autonomously, in order to create checkpoints, also in case of the foreign deployments. ZM Tarnów S.A. representatives show that implementation of the LOOK container makes it possible to limit the casualty rate in case of the personnel which protects the military infrastructure. Secondly, the system also improves the conditions for detection, recognition and identification of the threats appearing in the area around the base. Thirdly, the container offers an option of eliminating the enemy with the use of the safe weapons station.

As it was announced last year by PCO S.A., the company is presenting its new NPL-1T thermal vision binoculars during the MSPO 23rd International Defence Industry Exhibition in Kielce. The mass production of the device, once an order from the Army is obtained, may be started this year.

PCO S.A. developed a prototype of the device based on a bolometric detector, with a resolution of 640x480 pixels.
When developing their new system, the PCO S.A. engineers used the solutions used in the SCT “Rubin” firearm optic (which is already classified as NATO equipment, with the NSN number: 5855-43-001-4710). These thermal vision firearm sights were ordered in April 2015 by the Polish Ministry of Defence. The order has an estimated value of more than PLN 88 million (covering 1099 examples), and the products are going to be delivered until 2018.

In case of the thermal vision binoculars, a new control and signal analysis system for the detector has been applied, along with the new image processing and control systems, with the latter one featuring an ergonomic keyboard. Power supply system is also brand new, in case of the binoculars. The whole system is contained in a user-friendly housing with a keyboard and a lens-mount which makes it possible to calibrate the optics.

The device consumes very little energy, only 1.4 Watts of power, which makes it possible to use the binoculars for long periods of time, up to several hours. Two OLED displays are used to present the image. Observation of these displays is easier, thanks to utilization of aspherical elements in the oculars, with wide view in the lens – there is no need to adjust the position of the lens axis.

The binoculars additionally offer an option of recording several images within its memory, along with time and GPS data, coming from an external GPS receiver. The whole device weight, along with the batteries, is ca. 1 kg.
Let us recall the fact that PCO, on 21st October last year, became a part of the Polish Armament Group. This happened in a process of consolidation of the Polish defence industry. The product range offered by the company includes night-vision and thermal vision observation systems and optronic devices.

A team consisting of Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, together with the Polish ROSOMAK S.A. company, showcase the AMPV multi-role vehicle during the XXIII MSPO event. The vehicle was modified in order to meet the basic requirements of the Pegasus programme. Secondly, AMPV also meets the requirements which are connected to the patrol vehicle tender, organized for the land forces.

Earlier on we had known that the vehicle was going to be tailored to the Polish requirements. A little more than 2 months have passed between the MSPO 2015 expo and the presentation, which made it possible to implement the possible changes mainly on the basis of the armament and equipment systems offered by the Polish and by the German industry. Despite the fact that the vehicles are not necessarily going to be selected by the Armed Forces (including the special operations component), they are a good example of the capabilities of the companies and of the options of adapting and modifying the basic platform, in order to tailor it to the dynamic environment of the contemporary battlefield and a variety of conflicts which take place throughout different locations all around the world.

This includes changes in the interior required to fit in the communications/data transfer equipment and armament needed by the Polish Army, and to provide proper equipment-carrying and logistics support capabilities. With the permissible load maintained (2200 kg – however, this parameter may be changed, depending on the version and purpose of the vehicle), the transport compartment was expanded, its length is 300 mm larger. Thanks to the above, the vehicle is capable of carrying the required equipment, including the equipment placed in special hard-cases and protective containers.

Situational awareness was significantly improved, along with the level of crew protection, via installation of a set of sensors (including acoustic sensors and sensors for 360-degree observation). ROSY (Rapid Obscuring System For Land Vehicles) is one of the systems offered for the AMPV. This system makes it possible to cover the vehicle from the infra-red devices within the close, medium and long range spectra, within the visual spectrum from 400 to 1000 nm of wavelength and within the spectrum of laser radiation, with wavelength ranging from 550 to 1500 nm. The system has a very quick reaction time (0.4 seconds) and low mass – 15 kg with 20 40 mm grenades.

Moreover, AMPV was equipped with the FONET digital communications system manufactured by WB Electronics. The system provided the crew with voice communication, utilizing the used communication devices. The system additionally integrates the electronic equipment for the vehicle and controls cable and wireless networks.

The vehicle was demonstrated with a remotely controlled armament module (ZSMU-1276), equipped with a thermal vision camera, visible spectrum camera, laser range-finder and digital data transmission system using the primary system (e.g. BMS) or the GPS interface coupled with a digital map.

The manufacturers, along with the vehicle itself, also offer the presented kits of additional equipment, spare parts, hardware and a variety of service, operational and training support options. There is also an option of adding additional hatches, protective systems, optronic devices – in line with the buyer’s requirements.

The vehicle is offered for the Armed Forces by a team consisting of the Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rosomak S.A. companies. The platform’s structure is configurable, offering options of using additional armour-plating and equipment. In its basic variant, the vehicle provides the crew with level 3 ballistic protection and 4a/3b mine protection (4b to be reached), in line with the STANAG 4569 norm.

AMPV is placed within the 10-tonnes vehicle class and it was, according to the declarations, designed with the experience gathered during the NATO operations and peacekeeping missions, in mind. According to the basic assumptions, the vehicle is to provide mobility, along with a proper level of protection for its crew of 5. At the same time it would constitute a basis platform for the prospective special purpose vehicles.

The vehicle is propelled by the Steyr Motors 3.2 litre diesel engine, with a power output of 272 HP. Top  speed of the AMPV is  110 kph, while its range reaches 700 kilometers. There is an option of transporting the car under the CH-47 and CH-53 helicopters, or in the cargo bays of the transport aircraft,  such as the C-130 Hercules, C-160 Transall or A400M  Atlas.

Finally, AMPV may be fitted with a remotely controlled weapon station featuring a 7.62 mm machine gun, .50 heavy machine gun or a 40 mm grenade launcher. Alternatively, a ring mount with similar armament is also an option here.

Huta Stalowa Wola [Stalowa Wola Ironworks] presented the prototype of the Krab self-propelled howitzer, during the Kielce MSPO 2015 Defence Industry Exhibition. The vehicle is based on a K9 chassis, one example of which was shipped from South Korea. Test programme pertaining the first two examples of the new variant of the Krab howitzer is going to begin in September.

The new chassis is significantly lighter and it features a replaceable power-pack, using a 1000 HP MTU engine. Performance of the chassis is said to be significantly better than the parameters of the older vehicle delivered by OBRUM and Bumar-Łabędy companies. Second example of the K9 chassis is going to be delivered to Stalowa Wola in September.
The test programme, planned to last until mid-2016, according to the agreement signed with the Ministry of Defence, is going to begin in September as well. HSW declares that the test programme is going to cover a shorter period of time, than it was initially assumed. The deliveries of the first 24 vehicles are going to be realized until the end of 2017. This would cover the needs of a single artillery unit. Until 2022, 120 Krab howitzers are going to be procured.

The license agreement regarding the production process related to the K-9 chassis for the Krab howitzers, has been signed on 17th December 2014. The operation which resulted in mounting the turret on a new chassis took place exactly 8 months later. The K9 chassis is going to be license-manufactured by Huta Stalowa Wola – the company which acts as the leader of the programme.

Krab self-propelled howitzers are fitted with a cannon featuring a 52-calibre long barrel, which provides the vehicle with a target-striking capability at ranges of up to 40 kilometres. The cannon has been developed on the basis of the British-made AS-90 system, with a 52-calibre long barrels. The license for manufacturing the turret system was acquired by the HSW company back in 1999. The fire control system was developed together with the WB Electronics company. It uses the ZZKO TOPAZ solutions.

The decision to acquire the K9 chassis license was made, due to the fact that the vehicles delivered by the Bumar-Łabędy company turned out to be defective. The contract with the Koreans provides Poland with “unlimited possibilities within the scope of the future use” of the K9 vehicles in the prospectively manufactured weapons systems. Also, the vehicles based on the license-manufactured K9 platform would be exportable.

K9 Thunder artillery system is used by the South Korean Armed Forces, where it replaces the K55 howitzers (a derivative of the US-made M109 vehicles). Similarly as the Krab howitzer, the K9 is armed with a 155 mm cannon featuring a 52-calibre long barrel. Notably, the Turkish T-155 Firtina howitzer is also based on the solutions implemented in the K9 platform.

Turkish Aerospace Industries signed a memorandum covering the future cooperation with the Polish defence industry. The agreement, besides the Turkish company, also involves the Polish companies, including the Military Aviation Works No. 1, Air Force’s Technical Institute, Mesko company and the Central Military Bureau of Design and Technology.

The memorandum is related to the T129 ATAK helicopter offer, submitted within the scope of the Kruk programme. The scope of agreement includes cooperation of the individual subjects with the TAI company, when it comes to the TAI offer to replace the Polish Mi-24 rotorcraft.

This is yet another memorandum concluded by the Turkish company, within the scope of the industrial cooperation related to the T-129 offer. Back in May this year, during the IDEF-2015 event, agreement with the Mesko SA company was signed (related to procurement of the armament, should the ATAK helicopter be selected within the scope of the “Kruk” helicopter procurement programme). Another agreement was concluded with the Central Military Bureau of Design and Technology. The latter contract is related to the relevant airfield infrastructure for the helicopters.

MSPO 2015 demonstration is the last stage of the “T129 ATAK Poland Roadshow” - a series of displays of the helicopter organized in Poland. Earlier on the Turkish helicopter took part in a dynamic display during the Radom Air Show, it was also performing a display at the Warsaw Bemowo airfield.

T129B multi-role variant of ATAK is offered for the Polish Army – this variety is tailored to carry guided armament. ATAK’s basic anti tank armament comes in a form of the Turkish Mizrak-U/UMTAS ATGMs with a range of up to 8 kilometres. The missiles, depending on the variant, feature semi-active laser or passive thermal vision guidance system, with a capability of transmitting the detected data, in real time, on their way to the desired target. The manufacturer declares that other ATGM systems may also be integrated with the helicopter, including the Hellfire II and Spike missiles.

T129B ATAK may also be armed with 70 mm unguided rockets, Cirit guided missiles or Stinger air-to-air missiles. Three-barrell 20 mm cannon constitutes the fixed armament of the helicopter. The rotorcraft is also fitted with an optronic device equipped with thermal vision and visible spectrum cameras, along with a laser rangefinder.

Turkish Armed Forces already received 9 helicopters, in the basic T129A variety. T129A helicopters have already been used against the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party. The Turkish Army is going to receive at least 50 helicopters in the multi-role T129B variant as well.

Pourquoi Thales Alenia Space débarque en Pologne

 Par Michel Cabirol   |   01/09/2015

MSPO 2015 248

MSPO 2015: “Asteria” Thermal Vision Camera - Modernization Of The Rosomak IFV.

PUBLISHED AT: Wednesday, 02 September 2015

The KLW-1 “Asteria” camera, presented by PCO S.A. during this year’s MSPO salon, is a device which has a chance of being selected within the tender, the aim of which is to modernize the targeting system used in case of the Rosomak wheeled APC. The cameras have been already applied on the PT-91 Twardy tanks, replacing the older third-party-manufactured I-generation devices.

The tender realized in August by the 2nd Regional Logistics base, the objective of which is to prepare documentation which would make it possible to integrate the Tilde FC camera, utilized in the current fire control system of the Rosomak vehicle, is going to make it possible in the future, to modernize the observation system. The modernization process could include replacement of the thermal imaging camera.

MSPO 2015 425
KLW-1 Thermal Imaging Camera - Image Credit: M. Dura

PCO S.A., without any doubts, would be one of the pretenders to win the potential tender. The company will most probably submit an offer regarding the KLW-1 “Asteria” optronic suite which has been developed for the Drawa-T fire control system, used in the modernized tanks and IFV’s.

The thermal vision camera is operating within the 7,7÷9,3 µm wavelength range - the LWIR bandwidth. The camera is fitted with a cooled MCT III-gen detector, with a resolution of 640x512 pixels (pixel size: 15x15 µm). We should recall the fact that the detectors should be cooled, since the quantity of thermal radiation (decisive for the image quality) absorbed by the detector is increased, as the difference between the temperature of the detector and the object goes up. Moreover, noise is reduced, as the operational temperature is decreased.

MSPO 2015 337

Thus, cooling systems are used in medium and long range optronic devices (ranges above 3000 meters). When it comes to the KLW-1 “Asteria” devices, the range – in case of the narrow field of view – exceeds 12 000 meters in case of detection, exceeds 5000 meters in case of identification and, finally, exceeds 2 500 meters in case of recognition. When it comes to the wide field of view, the ranges are, respectively, as follows: more than 4600 meters in case of detection, more than 1500 meters in case of identification and more than 750 meters, in case of recognition.

The PCO S.A. developed a lens for the camera, with two fields of view: 3°x 2,25° and 10°x 8°, respectively for the narrow and wide field of view. The device weighs 8 kilograms and has the following dimensions: 179 x 149 x 362 mm. Additionally, the device is capable of changing polarization and orientation of the image, regulating the contrast and brightness, extracting the details, introducing the aim-points onto the image and of selecting the field of analysis for the systems of automation for the imagery.

KLW-1 “Asteria” suite uses one of the eight models of the PCO S.A. cameras. The difference between the models stems from the cooling systems for the detectors (cooled and non-cooled), their bandwidth (MWIR and LWIR) and resolution (384 x 288 and 640 x 512 pixels).

These cameras also use the PCO S.A.-developed electronic packages, including the complicated processing and filtration algorithms for the thermal vision imaging, along with the lenses with two fields of view with an ability of utilizing manual or auto-focusing systems, featuring aspherical optical elements made out of germanium. Thanks to the above, the cameras produce thermal imaging without any distortion or noise, the image may have increased contrast and clarity, in order to extract the interesting details.

All of the above elements are contained in a special housing which stabilizes the image when the field of view is changed and when the temperature varies. The housing meets the climatic and mechanical requirements for the military products. In case of the KLW-1 “Asteria” cameras, the above means that the devices are capable of functioning within a temperature range between -30°C and 55°C.

Polish small arms manufacturer Fabryka Broni unveiled its entire Modular Small Arms System calibre 5.56 mm (MSBS-5.56) assault rifle family, currently on order for the Polish Armed Forces, for the first time at the MSPO defence exhibition in Kielce.

Equipped with a quick-release barrel, the MSBS-5.56 is small arms system chambered in 5.56x45 mm with a unique feature: a common upper receiver for both classic and bullpup configurations.

The MSBS-5.56 upper receiver is a base to which other modules are attached: a barrel, a handguard, and a lower receiver with a classic folding and telescopic stock or in bullpup configuration. The MSBS system has been under development since 2007 by Fabryka Broni in co-operation with the Military University of Technology in Warsaw.

The family of MSBS-5.56 small arms has 11 rifle variants. The classic (MSBS-5.56K) and bullpup (MSBS-5.56B) designs each have five variants: an 11-inch barrel carbine, a 16-inch barrel standard assault rifle, a standard assault rifle with GL underbarrel grenade launcher, a 16-inch precise barrel designated marksman, and a 16-inch heavy barrel light support rifle. The classic version also comes in a parade rifle variant designed for the Polish Honour Guard Battalion (Batalion Reprezentacyjny), equipped with a 18-inch barrel designed for blank cartridges and a strengthened fixed buttstock with a steel stock.

The rifle is to be a successor of Soviet SKS carbines in use since the 1960s.

Pawel Madej, technical director of Fabryka Broni, told IHS Jane's , "We are in the middle of the armed forces trials of the MSBS-5.56 standard assault rifle, to be finished in 2016. However, the system passed all qualification tests and is ready for serial production. This year 100 MSBS-5.56 rifles of low-rate initial production will be manufactured."

Poland ordered 14,000 MSBS rifles in May 2014 for its Tytan (Titan) Advanced Individual Battle System (AIBS) programme. IHS Jane's understands that the first phase will include the delivery of the standard 16-inch barrel versions both with and without underbarrel grenade launchers. The second phase will involve the delivery of the specialised MSBS-5.56 variants (carbine, designated marksman, and light support).

Polish “Tytan” future soldier programme has reached the model test phase, which involves the pre-final examples of the product. The test programme is executed by the Military University of Technology. A prototype is going to be developed on the basis of the said research. The system is reaching its final shape and soon it is going to be field tested by the Polish Army. First mass produced examples are expected to be delivered in 2018.

The advanced Individual Fighting System, also known as Tytan, which is also referred to as the future soldier system, is formed by an integrated personal equipment kit, elements of which co-function together, in order to raise the operational effectiveness of the troops on the contemporary battlefield.

Tytan is a programme which is being realized by 13 subjects of the Polish defence industry, both private, as well as state owned companies, working together with scientific research institutes cooperating with the Military University of Technology. The Agreement related to the research and the framework agreement covering the future deliveries related to the TYTAN system have both been signed on 26th June 2014. Polish Ministry of Defence, on the grounds of the above-mentioned document, is obliged to acquire almost 14 thousand Tytan kits within the period between 2018 and 2022. Thanks to the above, the financing may be contained in an amount of PLN 5 billion. The progress of the project is supervised by PCO S.A., the company which acts as the leader of the “Tytan” future soldier programme and which delivers the key subsystems of the kit, including the observation- and reconnaissance-related devices.

As it was stated by the PCO representatives, the works are being realized in line with the assumed schedule. The final works on the model, which is compliant with the Polish Army’s requirements within the scope of the future soldier systems, are currently being implemented. Secondly, the experts working for the companies involved in the programme also work on the systemic requirements, related to the system. The system includes both dedicated devices and software, developed for the needs of the Tytan kit, as well as products that are readily available on the market, which met the requirements related to the system.

Properly composed kits have already been transferred for the test programme. The experts from the Military University of Technology, Military Institute for Aviation Medicine, Military Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, have altogether developed and executed the test programme agreed on together with the PCO S.A. company. The results were presented in the relevant protocols.

Military University of Technology also created the test scenarios for the battlefield conditions tests. The tests have been executed by an experienced group of soldiers who took place in numerous foreign deployments, under the supervision of the Regional Military Representation Offices. After the reports from the test programme are approved by the Ministry of Defence, the consortium will have a right to start realization of the works related to the prototypes of the newly developed system. The systems are going to be tested by the soldiers of the 17th Mechanized Brigade, which has been involved in the test programme regarding the technological modernization of the armed forces for some time now.

Test programme related to the individual “Tytan” battlefield kits is going to be yet another stage, on the system’s road to be mass produced. The first examples of the system shall become the regular equipment of the Polish Army in 2018.

Should all the requirements be met, the Tytan system shall:
•utilize digital technologies, advanced observation and communications devices;
•feature a modular weapons system, ballistic protection and sensors, all of which would improve the soldiers’ safety and combat capabilities;
•provide an optimal level of integration of all of the equipment and armament, in conjunction with professional preparation and management of the combat operations;
•cooperate with the IT and communications systems implemented in land and air platforms (helicopters, UAV systems);
•make it possible to introduce tactical information into the circulation of the command and reconnaissance systems, also within the BMS suite;
•be an open-architecture system, ready to be expanded and modernized in the future, using the progress related to the new technologies and training experience, as well as the experience collected during the combat deployments, also in the peacekeeping operations.

CTM (Centre For Maritime Technology) presents the wireless TOCZEK explosives and light Modular Lightweight Minesweep - the devices required for the Kormoran II minehunter, during the MSPO 2015 event in Kielce.

Three Variants Of The TOCZEK Device

OBR CTM presented three basic variants of the remotely detonated TOCZEK explosive devices:
•A variant - the largest one - weighing 48 kilograms, containing 40 kilograms of the explosive - which is lowered down in the proximity of the mine with the use of the Ukwial submersible craft. The device is, above all, used to destroy the bottom mines, including the ones covered in the bottom material.
•B variant - weighing 10 kilograms, containing 5.7 kilograms of the explosive - placed close to the mines via a special-purpose arm of the Ukwial submersible craft. This arm makes it possible to manipulate the mine from a safe distance.
•C variant - the smallest one, weighing 3 kilograms, containing 0.56 kilograms of the explosive, carried by the divers and by the underwater craft, with the primary purpose of cutting the cable holding the moored mine in position.

Detonation of all of the above devices is initiated via a wireless connection, with the use of the encoded hydroacoustic signals. The signal generator developed by the OBR CTM facility is fitted with a special purpose emitter lowered into the water, which, thanks to its power output, makes it possible to reach the devices 400 to 800 meters away, at depths of up to 160 meters.

In order to present the effectiveness of the explosives, a fragment of a mine destroyed by the TOCZEK B device, was demonstrated during the MSPO 2015 event.

MLM Modular Minesweep

The second product offered for the Polish vessels comes in a form of light modular minesweep – MLM. Not only is the product well known in Poland (it received the “Amber Medal” [Bursztynowy Medalion] and MoD award during the Balt Military Expo 2014 event, as well as the “Innovative Maritime Economy” [Innowacyjna Gospodarka Morska] award in the “Innovative Product” category, awarded by the Ship Forum [Forum Okrętowe] Employers Group, in October 2014), it also has gained good reputation all around Europe. It was tested by the French Navy at a proving ground close to Brest.

MLM was demonstrated in Kielce in a form of a single magnetic actuator which is capable of simulating magnetic field in static or variable manner (within the frequency range of 50/60 Hz and harmonic frequencies of up to 250 Hz). The device is also capable of producing static and alternating electric fields (1-5 Hz).

The actuator constitutes a component of a larger MLM system, because in order to imitate full physical field of a vessel, one needs several modules of this type, along with an acoustic emitter. For example, during the Brest tests, MLM system was used in a configuration with three magnetic actuators and towed acoustic sweep.

Each of these elements may be controlled separately, according to an assumed pattern or adequately, depending on the circumstances. Control of the sweep’s operation and power supply is realized with the use of the cable-line which connects the sweep with the towing vessel. What’s interesting, a remotely controlled catamaran (“Sterren Du”) was utilized in order to tow the sweep, during the French test runs. The vessel has been constructed by the DCNS company.

Huta Stalowa Wola presents its Kryl self-propelled, wheeled chassis howitzer during the MSPO 2015 event. The chassis is based on a Jelcz vehicle. The said artillery system has gone through a series of tests this year, within which a test firing programme was also realized.

Kryl 155 mm self propelled howitzer, developed by the Huta Stalowa Wola company, is based on the Israeli ATMOS artillery system. The howitzer is fitted with a 52-calibre long barrel and it is capable of striking targets at distances of up to 40 kilometres. The weapons system is placed on the Jelcz 663.32 chassis, fitted with an armoured cabin.

In March this year, the howitzer has gone through the first test-firing. Another series of tests took place in June. Rheinmetall Denel Munitions were used. This type of ammunition belongs to the Assegai family. The tests made it possible to examine the loads imposed on the chassis, during the firing.

During the works, a series of modifications was implemented, on the basis of the experience gathered during the test programme. The Howitzer is going to be fitted with a fire control system manufactured jointly by HSW, WB Electronics, WZŁ No. 2 and by the Military University of Technology.

Military and factory test programme related to the Kryl howitzer is scheduled to be completed in 2016. Mass production will be started a year later.

MSPO 2015: Ukrainian Industry in Kielce. In Search Of Cooperation With Poland

PUBLISHED AT: Today, 03 September

Motor Sich and Antonov companies are the primary, but not the only Ukrainian exhibitors taking part in the Kielce Salon. These companies are looking forward to cooperate with the Polish and the Western aerospace and defence industries, offering their world-class products.

Motor Sich is a top class manufacturer of aviation engines, offering powerplants for the helicopters and the fixed-wing aircraft. Up until now, the company has been deeply involved in cooperation with the Russian manufacturers, delivering the engines for numerous civil and military aircraft, and for all of the Russian Helicopters rotor-craft. Zaporozhe engines are also used in case of the Ukrainian Antonov jets, including the latest aircraft designed at the Bureau, the An-178, which made its maiden flight in spring this year.

Motor Sich is very interested in the option of maintaining the W-3 Sokół helicopters manufactured by the PZL-Świdnik company. Replacing the PZL-10W engines, with much more powerful MS-500V ones would guarantee proper performance for the helicopter. This would make it possible to export the Sokół rotor-craft to the Asian or to the African markets. Increased take-off power (from 900 HP for PZL-10W, up to 1500 HP), with maintained weight and dimension stems from a generation gap between these two powerplants. MS-500V engine was demonstrated at the booth of the Ukrainian company.

Not only is the Motor-Sich interested in modernizing the W-3 Sokól helicopters, the company also expressed its will to carry out works in case of other helicopters manufactured in Poland. Cooperation with the Polish facilities would make it possible to carry out modernization of these aircraft, in line with the international law and – thanks to the fact that the Ukrainians would have access to the documentation – the process would be sped-up.

Citation :
We want to modernize helicopters that were or that are manufactured in Poland. We are manufacturing new, turbine engines for the An-2 aircraft. New engines for the Mi-2 and W-3 Sokół helicopters. We have researched the situation in South Korea, China or India. There, a great need exists to acquire medium-sized helicopters, weighing around 6 tonnes. This is the category within which the Sokół can be placed. It is a very successful design, in a class which is quite popular all around the world. These helicopters are going to be most commonly used. If one replaced the W-3 helicopter’s powerplant with a more powerful engine, its performance, load capacity and operating weight are all going to be significantly increased.

Viacheslav Boguslayev, President of the Motor-Sich plant.

Motor-Sich acquired and repairs the second-hand W-3 Sokół helicopters. However, the Zaporozhe based company does not limit its activities to Poland. It does not wait for the Polish companies to note that there is an option of cooperation. Currently, the Ukrainian producer finishes the works related to modernization and engine replacement of the Mi-2 helicopters, designated as Mi-2MSB. This variant already has made its maiden flight, it is being currently certified. MSB-2 design with conformal fuel tanks and digital avionics has also been developed. Its model, along with a Mi-8MSB scale model, have been presented within the booth.

MSPO 2015 348

The company also looks for options of cooperation with the enterprises coming from the EU, without limiting the scope of the offer down to the rotor-craft. Austrian Diamond DA50 aircraft which made its maiden flight this year, features a Ukrainian power-plant - the AI-450S engine. In the future, a similar propulsion system is going to be provided for the twin-engine Diamond DA52 model. The company also works on modernization of the An-2 aircraft which are quite popular. The Russian transport aircraft has been manufactured by the Mielec based aviation plant. The prototype fitted with a turboprop engine, replacing the traditional piston-driven propulsion, has already made its maiden flight as well. MS-14 engine, used in this application, has also been presented in Kielce.

MSPO 2015 434

Another interesting proposal stems from an option of joint-modernizing the post-Soviet equipment within the foreign markets, particularly in Asia, where such equipment is still used quite widely.

MSPO 2015 530

Antonov Design Bureau manufactures cargo and specialized aircraft for military and civilian applications. The Antonov company is interested in cooperation with Poland, not only within the scope of modernizing the An-2 aircraft, as the Ukrainian bureau is also curious about using numerous components and generators coming from Poland, in order to replace the parts that – so far – were being acquired from the Russians. However, more ambitious joint projects are also planned, including an initiative related to the An-148-300 MP patrol aircraft. Secondly, development of a successor for the M28 Skytruck aircraft manufactured in Mielec was also discussed. Antonov may also get the Polish companies involved in the production process related to the latest cargo aircraft, including An-178, An-70, or its turbojet An-188 variant.

Additionally, offer of the Helitraining company is also interesting. The said company deals with pilots training and it manufactures advanced helicopter simulators. The Ukrainian producer would like to establish a Mi-2/Mi-8/17 simulator centre in Poland. Poland, for at least 10-15 years, is still going to use a large quantity of the Mi-17 helicopters, even though 50 examples of the H225M Caracal rotor-craft are being acquired. There is also no plan of replacing the Mi-2 helicopter in the Polish Army.

MSPO 2015 625

Another area of cooperation may be seen in a training centre for the Airbus H135 and H145 helicopter pilots, and for the pilots of the Embraer airliners. Negotiations within that scope are in process, they are related both to certification, as well as to the potential establishment of a proper location and infrastructure, within the territory of Poland. Thanks to this type of operations, it would be possible to train helicopter pilots coming from Poland (working for the emergency services) or Northern and Western Europe. H135/145 helicopters and Embraer airliners are very popular among the European operators.

ZM Tarnów S.A. company is presenting the latest variant of the UKM-2000P 7.62 mm machine gun, modernized and upgraded on the basis of the experience gathered by using the previous variants of the weapon in Iraq and Afghanistan. The upgraded gun has improved ergonomics. It is tailored to being used with the standard 7.62 x 51 NATO ammunition, manufactured by a variety of companies.

UKM-2000, in three different variants, has been introduced into service in the Polish Army, with the purpose of replacing the Soviet-made PK/PKM machine guns. However, the experience related to operational use of this weapon, especially the knowledge gathered during the operational deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq, shows that there is a need of modernizing the UKM-2000 weapons system.

Due to the reasons above, ZM Tarnów decided to develop a modernized variant, initially referred to as the UKM-2013. Later on the weapon’s name was changed to UKM-2000M. In June the machine gun has passed the military tests, which opens the way towards a contract, the value of which is estimated as PLN 24.76 million. The agreement is related to procurement of the modernized UKM-2000P machine guns. Deliveries are going to take place within the period between 2015 and 2018. Almost 380 examples of the new gun are going to be acquired.

The modernized variant of the UKM-2000P general purpose machine gun has been improved within the scope of the permissible conditions of use, ergonomics and it was perfected mechanically. The most evident changes include introduction of the Picatinny rails, both on receiver cover, as well as on the gas tube. The above makes it possible to utilize a variety of sights and other equipment. The stock has also been changed – now it is folded on the left side of the gun. It is applied in an adjustable, semi-open variant. The metal case for the ammunition belt has been replaced with a textile bag, which is much more comfortable to use.

When it comes to the mechanics, the weapon now is capable of firing blank cartridges, without a need of implementing additional insert in the feeding mechanism. The loading procedure, in case of the new variant of the weapon, is also easier, as a mechanism which prevents the ammunition belt from “going back”, along with a belt retainer, have been applied. The above developments make it possible to load the weapon, without opening the cover of the receiver.
The system for opening the receiver features a clip which makes it possible to lock the receiver in two, programmed positions. Additionally, the receiver cover may be closed at any position of the slide, thanks to a retractable slide roll applied in the weapon’s design.

Another change which meets the expectations of the user is visible in a much more efficient muzzle brake, including a flash guard which limits down the flash during shooting, making it more difficult to detect the firing position where the UKM-2000P is located. Stability of the weapon has been improved. The recoil has been reduced, thanks to the fact that a recoil shock absorber designed by ZM Tarnów has been implemented in the gun.

The new UKM-2000P variant is tailored to operations within a temperature range between -30 and +50 degrees centigrade, meaning that the gun would be realistically effective in any operating conditions. The modified UKM-2000P still remains one of the lightest general purpose machine guns manufactured around the world.

Wilk fire support vehicle demonstrator has been presented during the MSPO Defence Insustry Exhibition. The vehicle is based on the Rosomak IFV, and it is fitted with a concept Cockerill XC-8 turret, armed with a smooth-bore 120 mm cannon.

The Wilk [Wolf] demonstrator has been showcased by the Rosomak SA company. The vehicle is equipped with the Cockerill XC-8 turret fitted with a 120 mm cannon, which is compatible with the standard NATO tank munitions for this calibre, compliant with the STANAG 4385 norm (used e.g. in case of the Leopard 2 tanks). The turret provides space for 2 crew-members and Level 5 of ballistic protection, in line with the STANAG 4569 norm.

The vehicle is fitted with an automatic cannon loading mechanism and may also use programmable munitions or ATGM’s. The targeting and observation systems operate according to the hunter-killer principle – it is fitted with an independent targeting device for the commander. The devices make it possible to destroy the targets at night and during the day, in any weather conditions.

.308 machine gun constitutes the additional armament. There is an option of fitting the turret with a remotely controlled weapons station, equipped with a .50 cal. machine gun. The cannon features an advanced stabilizer which – according to the information provided by Rosomak S.A. - makes it possible to effectively neutralize stationary and moving targets, while on the move, at distances of up to 5 kilometres.

The cannon features a barrel, the length of which is 50 calibres. It is capable of operating within the elevation range between -10 and +20 degrees. Modular structure of the fire control system makes it possible to configure the optronic and electronic sensors with the use of the solutions selected by the user.

MSPO 2015: VTOL Manta UAV And Warmate UCAV

PUBLISHED AT: Today, 04 September, 10:59

WB Electronics presented a wide range of UAV systems during the MSPO event. The company’s offer is addressed to the Polish Army and beyond. The central spot is taken by the Manta UAV, coming both in conventional, as well as in a VTOL variant. Secondly, Warmate ‘loitering munition’ UCAV is also a highlight of the booth. Cooperation undertaken by the WB Group with the British Thales UK company is another novelty. The cooperation resulted in interoperability of the control systems for Manta, FlyEye and Watchkeeper UAVs.

WB Electronics is entering the competition in the “Gryf” programme tender, in cooperation with the Thales UK company, offering an UAV which is based on the Watchkeeper system. The joint Polish-British offer is said to involve the Polish industry in the key technological areas of the project, such as the data link, mission computer, software, optronic devices, encryption elements, integration of the communications system and command and control suites.

Citation :
It is a better solution to acquire the airframe abroad, since it constitutes one of the cheapest elements of the system – 10-15% of the total price. The elements inside are definitely more relevant here. The “brain” of the whole system is responsible for its operation – and this element has already been developed by the Polish companies.

as it was stated by the president of the WB Group – Piotr Wojciechowski

The cooperation is going to result in development of a UAV system which is going to be marketed in Poland and beyond – in the third countries. The British company is interested in the lighter UAV systems manufactured by the WB Electronics, such as the FlyEye – the Thales UK offer does not include any counterpart of such system.

Interoperability of the UAV systems designed by both companies is going to be one of the effects of the joint cooperation. The above means that the ground control system of the Watchkeeper UAV will be capable of controlling the WB Electronics UAV’s. The aforementioned capabilities are being already presented during the MSPO Exhibition, at the booths of both of the involved companies.

The WB Electronics offer within the scope of the UAV extends beyond the Gryf programme, in a form of the Manta, FlySAR or FlyEye systems. The two former UAV’s are qualified to take part in the Orlik programme, run by the Polish Ministry of Defence at the moment.

MSPO 2015 626

Manta is showcased both in a conventional, as well as in a VTOL variant. As the representatives of the WB Electronics company show, the UAV, created in a flying-wing layout, is in possession of capabilities that are unachievable for the conventional systems. Starting from November last year, Manta UAV is allowed to fly in the public airspace, in the same way as the manned aircraft, thanks to the special certificate granted by the Polish Civil Aviation Authority.

However, should the requirements published by the Ministry of Defence turn out to be more conventional, WB Electronics may propose the FlySAR UAV, with a conventional airframe fitted with a pulling propeller and reconnaissance equipment. Flight parameters are close to those offered by the Manta UAV, meaning that the flight endurance reaches at least 12 hours, within a distance of 200 kilometres from the control station. The FlySAR’s operational ceiling is 5 thousand meters.

MSPO 2015 436
Warmate Micro-UCAV with a HEAT warhead. Image Credit: J.Sabak

Another interesting concept developed by WB Electronics comes in a form of the Warmate “loitering munition” - UCAV fitted with a warhead which may be utilized to detect, recognize and neutralize the detected targets. These small-sized UAV systems may also be carried by the Manta UAV, however they may also be used by the infantry units or vehicles, with the use of disposable launchers and portable control systems. In order to make the above possible, two variants of the weapon have been developed – gliding one – presented on the hardpoints under the Manta UAV, and a heavier, propelled variant. The latter version of the system also features a larger HEAT or fragmentation warhead.

Transport/launching containers which are going to be portable or mountable on a vehicle, are currently in the development phase. In case of the portable system, preparing the UAV for take-off is possible to be realized in time under 60 seconds, while the vehicular variant shall be capable of taking off within couple of seconds.

MSPO 2015 354

Warmate Micro-UAV are fitted with an auto-pilot module which makes it possible to plan the route, direct the UAV towards the selected way-point or make it fly in circles above the target. Semi-automatic mode is also available. This type of the UAV is capable of staying in the air for 30 minutes, waiting for the target or looking for it on its own, without exposing the carrier UAV which would have to laser-designate the desired target.

The project is entirely financed by the WB Electronics company and it was premièred during the last year’s MSPO event. Not only the Polish, but also the foreign experts are curious about the Warmate system’s capabilities.

SAM system simulator utilizing virtual and augmented reality technologies was presented by the Polish Air Force Institute of Technology during the MSPO International Defence Industry Exhibition. The device, the purpose of which is to train the soldiers who are involved in operations with the use of the Newa-SC missile system, fuses a physical simulator with so called “augmented” reality, in order to replicate the procedures realized inside the vehicle, as well as on the outside of the launcher, along with the procedures related to the radar.

The procedures/diagnostics simulator is going to make it possible to execute most of the maintenance and combat procedures for the Newa SC system. The cabin of the system is replicated with a high degree of fidelity and functionality, thus it makes it possible to execute the standard checks, maintenance checks and to simulate emergency situations or errors.

Thanks to the augmented and virtual reality technologies, it is possible to execute training within the scope of initiating the external devices, such as the launcher or the antennas. Secondly, it is also possible to carry out the external checks related to the SAM system. The above training may be realized with the use of goggles, tablet or other multimedia device. Due to the fact that the switches are replicated in a form of touch screens, should a modernization be implemented, or should the Newa system components be changed, tailoring the simulator to the implemented changes is easy, cost-effective and quick.

The simulator may also be used in a simulation involving other devices, during a joint training. The representatives of the Air Force Institute of Technology stress the fact that implementation of the AR and VR solutions allows them to cut down on the training costs and limit the duration of training involving the live-systems, limiting their wear. This introduces flexibility, within the scope of shaping the training conditions.

Developed solutions also make it possible to introduce new elements of training and customizing the simulator, as modernization of the simulated SAM system progresses forward. The system was developed within a project, the aim of which was to develop a VR- and AR- enhanced SAM simulator. The initiative was financed by the National Centre of Research and Development. One device of this type is going to be delivered to the Koszalin Air Force training facility.

One of the novelties presented at the ZM Tarnów booth during the MSPO Exhibition is a variant of the remotely controlled armament module - ZSMU - offering an option of quick replacement of the .50 cal. machine gun with the 40 mm automatic grenade launcher - HK GMG. Alternatively, a 7.62 mm machine gun may also be mounted within the module.

The ZSMU-1276 module is being used, among other vehicles, in case of the Rosomak WRT IFV. In that case the module is fitted with a 7.62 mm UKM-2000C machine gun. The standard variant is equipped with .50 cal. WKM-B machine gun (optionally - .50 cal. NSW machine gun), with ammunition supply provided by a box containing 150 rounds of ammunition.

The module, presented during the MSPO event, could also be fitted, thanks to a special-purpose mounting adapter, with the 40 mm automatic GMG grenade launcher manufactured by the Heckler & Koch company, or with a 7.62 mm UKM-2000C machine gun.

ZSMU module may additionally be integrated with the PCO S.A.-produced ZMO-1 or ZMO-2 “Horus” optronic systems, both of which are fitted with a thermal vision camera and a laser rangefinder.

ZSMU is controlled by a single operator. The kit that is tailored to be fitted with the .50 cal. machine gun has a weight of - along with the ammunition - 190 kilograms. In case of the 7.62 mm machine gun it is 28 kilograms lighter. The system is capable of covering 360 degree sphere with fire, with the elevation ranging from -5 to +50 degrees.

The optronic system itself - coming in the ZMO-2 variant - makes it possible to carry out observations:
•with the use of a thermal-vision camera, at distances of up to 4200 meters (wide angle of view, minimum focusing distance of 20 m) and up to 6800 meters (narrow field of view, minimum focusing distance of 100 m);
•with the use of the daytime TV camera, at distances of up to 600 meters (with a wide field of view and minimum focusing distance of 5 m +) and up to 4000 meters (with a narrow field of view, and minimum focusing distance of 250 meters).

1.54 µm wavelength laser range-finder makes it possible to measure the distances between 100 and 10 000 meters.

During the MSPO 2015 event, new camouflage patterns for the Tytan future soldier systems were presented. The patterns have been developed with considerable involvement on the part of the Andropol S.A. company.

The elements of the Tytan system, including armament and equipment for the Polish future infantry, were all presented within the area of the armed forces exhibition, during the Kielce expo. On the other hand, three new camouflage patterns were presented at the Andropol S.A. booth.

Tytan programme requirements which were taken into account, when the new camouflage patterns were being developed, define the criteria for the camouflage effectiveness in the visible light and in case of the infra-red spectra. The camouflage elements were developed jointly by the representatives of the Andropol SA company, working together with the experts of the Military University of Technology and the Military Institute of Engineer Technology.

As a result of the research and development programme, a new, non-flammable fabric was developed, in line with the requirements of the EN469 norm. Three camouflage patterns placed on the fabric were presented – spring/summer, autumn, and snowless winter ones. Additionally, a separate urban operations camouflage was added. The latter pattern was developed by the Military University of Technology.

It is expected that winter and other variants are going to be developed soon. Roiman Klimiuk of the Andropol company stressed the fact that a test programme, regarding the three prototypes, is being currently realized.

During the MSPO Salon in Kielce, the Norwegian Nammo company presented its offer within the scope of ammunition, including the rounds for the Rosomak APC’s, Main Battle Tanks (including Leopard 2) and for the 155 mm howitzers.

The Norwegian Nammo company presented a wide range of ammunition, with a variety of calibers. The company is already well known in Poland, primarily thanks to the license manufactured 30 mm projectiles for the Rosomak APC. The offer of the company, demonstrated during the MSPO event, also included artillery ammunition, or rounds dedicated for the heavy machine guns.

During the Kielce event, Nammo presented, among other types of ammunition, the 30x173 mm round used by the Bushmaster cannon applied in case of the Rosomak vehicles. The display featured sabot Mk 258 rounds – both in the standard Mod 0, as well as in the modified Mod 1 “Swimmer” varieties.

Representatives of the Nammo company claim that both rounds deliver armour penetration of above 100 mm, at distances of up to 1 kilometre. “Swimmer” round is additionally modified in a way which allows it to maintain its properties, once it hits the water – which is quite important in case of the maritime operations, directed against fast boats. This type of ammunition is utilized in case of the on-board artillery of the LCS and LPD-17 class vessels.

Nammo also showcased MP/T [Multi-Purpose] rounds, along with a variety of training munitions for the 30 mm cannons, including TPDS-T sabot rounds and plastic P-SRTA-T rounds, used in case of the “force-on-force” training operations, within which both of the involved sides may use the above-mentioned ammunition. Both types of rounds may be used at distances of up to 1.2 kilometres.

The Norwegian manufacturer also presented the 12.7 x 99 (BMG) ammunition, dedicated for the heavy machine guns and for the anti-material sniper-rifles. Armour-piercing rounds (including NM-173 and NM-185 rounds, with armour penetration capability of 22 mm at the distance of 900 m), and API armour-piercing incendiary rounds, with a capability of penetrating 22 mm armoured covers, at distance of 100 m, were also presented during the Kielce exhibition. MP multi-purpose rounds were another highlight of the booth. This round fuses penetrative (10.6 mm of RHA, at 30 degree inclination, at 1000 meters), incendiary and fragmentation effect, including a variant with an IR-visible tracer (MP-DT) and training variants, including the plastic P-SRTA round as well.
