Kings of both Saudi Arabia and Jordan will visit MAKS 2015 International Air Show and Defense Expo air show on the opening day.

Russia anticipates to strengthen its trade ties with customers from the Middle East at the upcoming MAKS 2015 International Air Show and Defense Expo, which will be held on August 25- 30 in the city of Zhukovsky outside Moscow, Defense News reported.

“The MAKS air show is likely to illustrate the Kremlin's real and emerging security partners in the Near and Far East,” Theodore Karasik, UAE-based geo-political expert, told Defense News.

Russia has already reached a historical milestone, profiting $13.2 billion in 2014 from the sales of military aircraft, mainly to China and India, and now expects to expand its trade connections with to Middle Eastern states like Saudi Arabia and Jordan, Karasik states.

Russian media has confirmed that kings of both Saudi Arabia and Jordan will visit the expo on the opening day on August 25.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia is expected to strike a major trade deal at MAKS 2015 in Russia, in a deal to purchase cutting-edge Russian Ka-52K combat helicopters, defense analyst believes.

Russian newest yet-to-be-unveiled to public at large Ka-52K helicopter was designed specifically for Mistral class ships, which the Saudis have now expressed interest in purchasing. France broke the contract with Russia for the two Mistral ships after the conflict in Ukraine erupted.

Russia Seeks Middle East Deals at MAKS Air Show
By Matthew Bodner 5:26 p.m. EDT August 22, 2015

MOSCOW — Political upheaval over the last year has created a radically different business, political and security environment for this week's biennial International Aviation and Space Salon (MAKS) compared with the 2013 exhibit.

Russian defense firms under Western sanctions imposed for Moscow's annexation of Crimea last year have effectively cut the industry off from Western credit and customers.

This has not stopped companies like Airbus and Boeing from booking salon space to show off their civilian wares, such as the new A350 commercial plane, but it has put the Russian defense industry under immense pressure to demonstrate that it will make due with non-Western customers, which have been the traditional buyers of Russian equipment.

“The MAKS air show is likely to illustrate the Kremlin's real and emerging security partners in the Near and Far East,” said Theodore Karasik, a UAE-based geo-political analyst who closely follows trends in Russian arms agreements.

Russia already maintains a commanding presence in the arms markets in these regions. In 2014, Russian arms exports hit a record high of $13.2 billion, with a heavy focus on aircraft sales. Its main trading partners are nations such as China and India.

Russian defense firms that will present their products at the MAKS air show, such as Almaz-Antey and the United Aircraft Corp., are Russia's largest defense contractors, and saw surging revenues in this year's Defense News Top 100 ranking.

But Russia appears to be making a concerted push to sweep up contracts from non-traditional customers in the Middle East such as Saudi Arabia and Jordan. On Aug. 18, Russian media reports said that the Saudi and Jordanian kings would join President Vladimir Putin at the show's opening on Aug. 21.

“The visit of both the Saudi and Jordanian kings is part of the broader picture regarding the politics surrounding MAKS,” said Karasik. “Both Riyadh and Amman may be looking for equipment to support allies in the Near East specifically to add airpower assets to complement Russian equipment on the ground in several locations."

Alexey Khlebnikov, a Moscow-based analyst focusing on the Middle East, said Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is also expected in Moscow this week, indicating that both Jordan and Egypt are looking to buy Russian weapons, though a contract might not be signed at MAKS.

The Iranian Embassy in Moscow also confirmed that an Iranian delegation will be present at MAKS. Several Russian media reports said that Russia and Iran are expected to sign an agreement on the sale of four battalions of S-300 air defense systems this week. Though they did not specify where this would take place, it is possible MAKS will be the forum.

However, “the most important deal is the possible arms deal with Saudi Arabia,” Khlebnikov said. “My guess is that Saudi Arabia might be interested in the newest Russian combat helicopters, the K-52Ks, which were specifically designed for the Mistral helicopter carriers.”

The K-52K will be shown publicly for the first time at MAKS, and given that Saudi Arabia has expressed a strong interest in the Mistral carriers, which France was supposed to deliver to Russia before the contract was suspended last year, “it makes it very likely that the Saudis want the helicopters [built for the ships],” Khlebnikov said.

Though foreign arms sales are going to dominate the MAKS air show, the Russian Air Force is expected to sign a major contract for 48 new Su-35 multirole fighters, newspaper Vedomosti reported last week, citing unidentified defense industry sources.

The United Aircraft Corp., which owns Sukhoi, is expected to complete a similar 48 fighter delivery to the Defense Ministry in 2015, and with the Sukhoi T-50 facing procurement challenges due to the collapse of the ruble and development delays, Russia's Air Force has been forced to buy more Su-35s. The contract is expected to be worth around $1.5 billion, Vedomosti reported.

Other items of interest at the show will be the first public display of the Sukhoi T-50 stealth fighter since the 2013 MAKS airshow. While the Kremlin used this year's Victory Day parade on Red Square as an opportunity to showcase a wide variety of new weapons platform, the T-50 was a no-show.

The MiG aircraft company said it would dust off a full-scale model of its light fifth-generation fighter design, the MiG 1.44, as it works to develop a light fighter to sell on the foreign market. Russia's first strike drone is also expected to be displayed at the show.

The Russian Defence Ministry and the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) will sign a contract for the delivery of 48 Sukhoi Su-35 aircraft (NATO reporting name Flanker-E) at the MAKS-2015 air show in late August, local media reported Tuesday.

According to the Vedomosti newspaper citing defence and industry sources, the contract may amount to 100 billion rubles ($1.6 billion at current exchange rate).

Earlier this year, Russian media reported that the Sukhoi aircraft manufacturer, a subsidiary of UAC, was planning on transferring 14 Su-35S fighter jets to the Russian Defence Ministry this year.

Russia's Su-35 fighter was first introduced to a foreign audience at the 2013 Paris Air Show as a "4++ generation" heavily-upgraded derivative of the Su-27 multirole fighter.

The  international aviation and space show will be held in the town of Zhukovsky near Moscow on August 25-30.

MAKS: A350-900 makes Moscow debut as Aeroflot continues review

By: Stephen Trimble Moscow

Airbus has debuted the A350-900 at the 12th Moscow air show (MAKS-2015) at least three years ahead of the first delivery to the type’s only customer in Russia.

Airbus A350 test pilot Frank Chapman piloted the A350-900 – MSN-001 – from Toulouse, France, landing on 24 August at the Ramenskoye airport that hosts the biannual air show.

“We’re really happy to arrive here with such fantastic weather,” Chapman told reporters after parking the A350 on the static line, minutes after his co-pilot waved the white Airbus flag from an open cockpit window.

The A350 arrives in Moscow as Russian customer Aeroflot continues to evaluate several details about its original order, including the timing and number of deliveries and the current mix of 14 A350-900s and eight A350-800s.

Airbus cancelled the A350-800 programme last year, and Aeroflot remains one of the few customers that have not decided what to do with its order.

But Aeroflot has vowed not to cancel the A350-900 order in full, as the SkyTeam carrier recently did with an deal for 22 Boeing 787s. Last year, Aeroflot expected to take delivery of the A350-900s between 2018 and 2020, but not does not discuss a timetable for the aircraft.

Supporting the carrier’s decision likely figured large in Airbus’ decision to bring the A350-900 to MAKS for the first time. The company’s engineering centre in Moscow also participated in the design of the A350-900, performing a stress analysis on the aft fuselage.

Airbus can expect to to be a star attraction at MAKS with one of the few non-Russian aircraft in the flying display. Chapman plans to perform an 8min flying display each day aimed at highlighting the aircraft’s maneouvrability, perhaps emulating the aircraft’s recent start turns at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s AirVenture fly-in in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in July and the Paris air show in June.

Meanwhile, Aviasalon, the MAKS host organsiation, is “very happy to welcome” the aircraft after “several months of negotiations with Airbus” to arrange the visit, says general director Vladimir Vlasov.

Irkut Corporation demonstrated for the first time at the MAKS 2015 air show its Yak-130 'Mitten' trainer/strike aircraft fitted with a nose-mounted laser rangefinder.

An Irkut representative stated that "the laser rangefinder enables using the Yak-130 over a very irregular terrain [mountains, ravines], improves the accuracy of target co-ordinate determination and that of the existing range of weapons".

The laser rangefinder has been fitted onto the Yak-130 in compliance with a foreign customer's requirements to improve the aircraft's strike capabilities.

"By now the upgraded Yak-130 has undergone aerodynamic trials and the new laser rangefinder has been tested for range and aiming precision," a Russian defence industry source told IHS Jane's . The source confirmed that weapons tests will also be conducted on the upgraded Yak-130.

The upgraded Yak-130 is also fitted with the Talisman electronic warfare suite developed by Belarussian company Defence Initiatives. However, the suite has not yet been tested on the Yak-130.

At the MAKS-2015 air show, Irkut Corporation also formally signed a previously revealed contract to supply a second batch of four Yak-130s to Belarus. The aircraft will be delivered in 2016.

MAKS: Russia extends Il-96 production by several years

By: Stephen Trimble Moscow

Production of the Ilyushin Il-96 could continue for nearly a decade to support the Russian military's requirements for an aerial tanker and other special missions, United Aircraft (UAC) chief executive Yuri Slyusar has disclosed.

Continued production of the four-engined widebody also offers a reprieve for the Voronezh Aircraft Production Association (VASO), a UAC subsidiary since 2007. The future of VASO has been in doubt since the conflict between Ukraine and Russia raised questions about the plant's continued access to rights to build the Antonov An-148, a regional airliner designed and also manufactured in Kiev.

Resuming Il-96 production in Voronezh means the 80-year-old aircraft plant will remain in operation, Slyusar told reporters yesterday at the MAKS air show. VASO produced passenger-carrying Il-96s until UAC withdrew the type from the market in 2009, allowing only the freighter version to continue in production.

In January, the Russian defence ministry awarded UAC a contract to build the first two Il-96-400TZ tankers, with the capability of transferring up to 65t of fuel using OPCD-1 refueling pods already developed for Il-78 tankers.

MAKS : Russian Helicopters launches unmanned tiltrotor concept

By: Stephen Trimble Moscow

Source: Flightglobal.com

Russian Helicopters has expressed new interest in developing tiltrotor technologies that could be used to design a new family of unmanned and potentially even manned aircraft.

The holding that includes Russian design houses Kamov and Mil announced the internal initiative with a short news release distributed at the MAKS air show.

“The main objective of the project at this stage is to identify the critical technologies and systems required for the further development of a family of Ospreys with varying maximum takeoff weight, both manned and unmanned,” says the new release.

Although tiltrotor technology is mainly associated with Bell Helicopter’s 60-year legacy of development work, Russian engineers have experimented with different tiltrotor concepts since the 1930s. More recently, Mil had launched development of the Mi-30, which resembled a slightly larger version of the V-22, in the mid-1980s, but it was cancelled as the Soviet economy crumbled.

In the following decade, the Yakovlev design bureau also introduced a concept for a 450kg-class unmanned tiltrotor called the Albatross. The design faded from public view, but in 2012 Russian Helicopters disclosed a new UAV project also named Albatross, featuring a partial tiltwing rather than only a tiltrotor. That project was reportedly scheduled to begin deliveries in 2017.

This week Russian Helicopters provided no details about the scope or timeline for the new effort, but the company clarified the ultimate goal.

“The aim of the project is to create a family of high-speed multi-purpose rotary-wing aircraft,” says the Russian Helicopters news release, suggesting that smaller and larger vehicles could also emerge.

In describing the benefits of tiltrotor and tilt-wing technology, the Russian Helicopters release noted the ability to transport “passengers or goods” at higher speeds and longer distances than a conventional helicopter, while retaining the latter’s ability to land in small spaces.

MAKS: Can Russia’s ‘Caspian Sea Monster’ rise again?

By: James Drew Moscow

Source: Flightglobal.com

The Soviet Union’s once-secretive “Caspian Sea Monster” has resurfaced at the MAKS air show, minus the stacks of short-range nuclear missiles meant to obliterate Western defences in a sea-skimming sneak attack.

The Lun-class Ekranoplan – designed to travel at high speeds just 150m above the ocean on a cushion of air – was created in the mid-1960s and is arguably one of the oddest weapons to emerge during the Cold War.

But as Russian seeks to revive and modernise its one mighty aerospace industry, one design bureau see great potential reproducing the Soviet ekranoplan for passenger and cargo transport purposes.

Sergey Korolev of the Alexeyev Central Hydrofloil Design Bureau hopes the model at MAKS will renew interest in this type of ground effect vehicle, and he sees the cashed-up tourism markets of China and the Middle East as the best source of investment.

Two concepts were displayed in an animation at MAKS: One is passenger transport vehicle and the other is a high-speed patrol craft with forward-firing guns and a deployable speed boat for coastal policing or anti-piracy missions.

However, Korolev thinks it would be most sensible to pursue a 100 to 120-seat passenger ekranoplan powered by rows of turbojet or turboprop engines for speeds of 250km/h.

MAKS 2015 3266
BillyPix

The display model would accommodate 50 passengers, but the unique ground effect that lifts the airframe at a certain speed favours larger aerofoils.

“It’s only a concept,” says Korolev, the design bureau’s product deputy general of civil works and director of marketing. “We have some vision for the civil sector, not for the army.”

He recognises that the high-technology venture won’t be an easy sell, and he gave no time frame for how long it would take to reproduce the machine – which is neither aircraft nor boat.

Plus, the bulk of the investment would need to come from industry, not the government, he says.

“Now, it’s very difficult because in Soviet times many universities and institutes worked for this project,” he explains. “With communism, everything is free and people just work. Now, it’s not possible. This is only a model, because maybe some people or visitors have some vision for this project, maybe new life.”

MAKS 2015 4141
Wiki Commons

Russia has long been the leader in ground effect vehicles, although Boeing Phantom Works at one point had its own cargo-carrying conceptual design known as the Pelican.

Russia’s Lun-class vehicle, which retired from service in the 1990s, received the “Sea Monster” nomenclature from NATO, which spotted the gigantic project on satellite imagery.

By flying in just above the water, the Soviets believed the “MD-160” would be invisible to Western radars and could launch a barrage of missiles before being spotted.

Russia's Mi-28N Night Hunter attack helicopters will receive the N025 mast-mounted radar from 2016, an industry source told IHS Jane's at MAKS 2015.

"The military is completing the tests of the N025 radar on three helicopters. Starting next year, it will be produced serially for mounting on new Mi-28N helicopters," the expert said.

According to him the Russian military's existing Mi-28Ns can be fitted with the radar during repair and upgrade. The Mi-28N helicopters began to enter service with the Russian army in 2008.

At present a simplified N025E version is installed on the Mi-28NE export version of the helicopter.

Russia's Tactical Missiles Corporation (KTRV) used the occasion of the MAKS-2015 airshow to unveil the Grom-E1 guided cruise missile and Grom-E2 gliding bomb.

Both are currently being trialled according to the director general of KTRV, Boris Obnosov.

The munitions have a unified design configuration with swept-back wings and have been designed to fit within a fighter aircraft's internal weapon bay. Both also feature the same combined (INS/GLONASS) guidance system, and differ in that while the powered Grom-E1 missile is equipped with a rocket engine at its rear, the gliding Grom-E2 uses this space for an additional high-explosive warhead instead of the engine.

Although the precise specifications were withheld, KRTV noted that each weapon weighs over 600 kg. The Grom-E1 has a roughly 300 kg warhead, while the Grom-E2s weigh more than 450 kg. The range of the munitions was not disclosed, but both are intended to be stand-off weapons, capable of engaging land targets outside of defended airspace.

Russia's Tactical Missiles Corporation (KTRV) company demonstrated for the first time at the MAKS 2015 air show its upgraded version of the Kh-58UShK anti-radiation missile featuring an imaging infrared (IIR) channel.

This missile intended to be integrated into the internal weapons bays of Russia's new Sukhoi PAK FA (T-50) fighter aircraft.

According to KTRV's general director Boris Obnosov, equipping the Kh-58UShK anti-radiation missile control system with a thermal imaging channel enables it to strike radars operating in pulse mode and turning off when the missile is in its terminal phase.

The Kh-58UShK and Kh-58UShK IIR missiles can be mounted externally on a range of aircraft (using an AKU-58-type pylon) such as the MiG-35, Su-30MK, Su-34 and Su-35, or as the UShK variants of the Kh-58 have folding wings they can be stored in an internal weapons bay (like on the PAK FA) using a UVKU-50-type launcher.

The missile is designed to both hit pre-programmed radar targets and targets detected by the target designation system of the aircraft. The new Kh-58UShK IIR missile has an innovative broadband passive radar seeker working in the 1.2-11 GHz frequency range to seek out enemy radars.

The upgraded antiradar missile weighs 650 kg, is 4.19 m long, has a wingspan of 0.8 m, and a body diameter of 0.38 m. With its wings folded the missile's cross section is 0.4x0.4 m. The missile has a range of up to 245 km, is designed to hit within a radius of 10 m of its target and has a 149 kg warhead.

The Kh-58UShK IIR missile was developed by the Raduga (Rainbow) state design bureau.

MAKS 2015: Russia's new Ka-35 AEW helicopter enters service

Nikolai Novichkov, Moscow - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

27 August 2015

Russia's latest Kamov Ka-35 airborne early warning (AEW) helicopter has entered service with the Russian Navy, an industry source told IHS Jane's at the MAKS-2015 air show.

The new Ka-35 is both designed as a replacement for the Russian Navy's ageing Ka-31 'Helix' AEW helicopters and to have a wider capability set than the older platform. "This is a relatively old machine" the source stated of the Ka-31, adding: "It was created in its time for fulfilling, in particular, such missions as protecting Project 1143 vessels [Kiev-class aircraft carriers], and it did the job well."

The new AEW helicopter has built on the legacy of the older aircraft, the source stated.

MAKS: Russia’s hypersonic scramjet experiment could fly by 2019

By: James Drew Moscow

Source: Flightglobal.com

Russia’s Gromov Flight Research Institute (LII) expects its latest GLL-AP-02 hypersonic scramjet test vehicle to fly in “three or four years,” with officials telling Flightglobal that funding constraints and technical issues have slowed progress.

LII’s Sergei Pernitsky and Sergei Vasilievich said via a translator at the MAKS air show in Moscow that work on the flight sciences vehicle is progressing, but slowly.

“Mostly because of the lack of funding, but there are lots of difficulties despite the funding because this project is very ambitious,” they explain.

GLL-AP-02 is the Russian equivalent of America’s Boeing X-51 and China’s “WU-14”. It is the latest in a series of Russian rocket-boosted hypersonic test vehicles, proceeding the GLL-VK and GLL-31 projects.

LII presented a model of the vehicle at MAKS-2013, although it was tellingly absent at Zhukovsky this week.

Pernitsky and Vasilievich said Western sanctions are not having any impact on the project, and they hope it goes ahead as soon as possible to build on the hypersonic flight data gathered in previous experiments. The research has both civil and military applications, they say.

Western sanctions also don’t seem to have stymied Russia’s involvement in another hypersonic flight sciences project, called HEXAFLY.

Russia, Australia and the European Union are partnered on the programme, which is maturing several promising aerostructures for civil high-speed transportation.

Russia’s Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute displayed two HEXAFLY wind tunnel models at MAKS, but referred all questions to the project’s governing body, HEXAFLY-International.

During the interview with LII, Pernitsky and Vasilievich expressed a desire for Russia to restart development of reusable spaceplanes.

The Gromov Flight Research Institute helped produce BOR-4 – the Soviet Union’s original reusable orbital test vehicle. The Kosmos rocket-launched experimental spacecraft achieved four successful flights between 1982 and 1984, leading to great advancements in the heat shield technology that enabled the Russia’s Buran space shuttle programme.

The institute says it is following Sierra Nevada Corporation’s Dream Chaser programme in the USA with great interest, particularly because the company’s design looks suspiciously similar to BOR-4.

With some nationalistic pride, the officials say BOR-4 was an extremely capable design and would make an excellent foundation for any future Russian pursuits.

Among the most significant weapons to be exhibited at MAKS 2015 was an updated version of the Kh-59 stand-off land attack missile, called the Kh-59MK2.

Developed by the Raduga Design Bureau, part of Russia's Tactical Missiles Corporation (KTRV), the new variant - about to enter flight testing - has been configured to fit in the internal weapons bay of the Sukhoi PAK FA (T-50) fighter aircraft. Additionally, the body of the missile has been optimised for a reduced radar cross section (RCS).

The new, stealthy Kh-59MK2 is 4.2 m long, has a wingspan of 2.5 m, and a 0.4x0.4 m cross section with its wings and fins folded. Although currently designated as part of the Kh-59 family, it is expected to receive an entirely new designation in the future.

As for the original Kh-59, the missile is intended to strike a variety of fixed ground targets, including targets with low radar, infrared (IR), and optical background contrast, known position co-ordinates, and target area information features.

Powered by a Saturn 37-04 bypass turbojet (or a 50MT turbojet for export), the modernised Kh-59MK2 has an acknowledged range of 290 km. It incorporates an INS and a satellite guidance system (GPS and GLONASS) that can provide mid-course guidance, and an electro-optical (EO) terminal guidance system that gives a circular error probable of 3 m in either day or night operations. One or more missions can be loaded into that system to provide optional guidance on different targets.

The missile can fly as low as 50 m over the ground, with warhead options including a 310 kg penetrator or submunitions.

MAKS 2015 : ce qu’il fallait voir

Actualité des forces 15 septembre 2015

MAKS 2015 512
