Russian Defense Ministry creates a new branch of the Armed Forces – the Aerospace Forces.

Today, during the first teleconference of the year 2016, the Russian Defence Minister has announced the creation of a new branch in the Russian armed forces, the Aerospace Forces. This teleconference has taken place under the leadership of the Head of the military department General of the Army Sergei Shoigu in the National Centre for State Defence Control.

Six missile regiments equipped with stationary and mobile RS-24 Yars complexes were put on combat duty in the Strategic Missile Forces.

The combat capability of the naval strategic nuclear forces was increased. The permanent combat readiness forces received 2 strategic missile submarines Alexander Nevsky and Vladimir Monomakh.

In accordance to the Russian Defence Minister, it is necessary to strengthen and develop military cooperation with allies and partners.
The head of military department expressed his confidence that successful implementation of all plans is to increase combat potential of the Russian Armed Forces and protection capabilities of the national interests.

The Yars RS-24 Is a Russian-made mobile nuclear intercontinental ballistic missile which can be mounted on truck carrier or deployed in silos. The first production of Yars began in 2004. The layout of the vehicle is similar to the Topol-M SS-27.

The missile RS-24 is a three-stage, solid propellant, MIRV-capable (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles) ICBM (InterContinental Ballistic Missile) with a range of 10,500 km. The missile uses a guidance upgraded system of the inertial and Glonass system used in the RS-12M2 (Topol-M SS-27) missile. The accuracy is expected to be around 250 m CEP (Circular Error of Probability). RS-24 is expected to have a minimum range of 2,000 km, and a maximum range of 10,500 km. The RS-24 missile can be armed with up to 10 warheads.

Over 2,000 Russian Paratroopers to Practice Jumps on January 20

January 13 - More than 2,000 paratroopers will practice parachute jumps in four regions of the country during scheduled exercises on January 20, the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday.
"The paratroopers will carry out simultaneous jumps in four different constituent entities of Russia. The mass Airborne Forces airdrop will be carried out using D-10 parachute systems and Arbalet-2 special purpose parachute systems," the statement said.
Paratroopers will simultaneously jump out of Il-76 (NATO reporting name: Candid) planes. Some 20 aircraft from the Russian Aerospace Troops will be used in the exercises.
Last month, the Airborne Forces announced that some 5,000 paratroopers would practice parachute jumps across Russia in January in over 300 flights.

Russia to fill gap left by An-70 with more Il-76MD-90A airlifters

Russia is to fill the gap left in its strategic airlift capabilities by the abandonment of the Antonov An-70 project with Ukraine with additional numbers of the Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A, a senior service official said on 13 January.

The Russian Air Force (Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily - VVS) is to receive an undisclosed extra number of the newly introduced Il-76MD-90A to offset at least some of the 60 An-70s that the service was due to induct, of which more than 12 were to be handed over by 2020, the commander of the Military Transport Aviation, Lieutenant General Victor Benedictine, reportedly told Russian journalists.

Co-development of the An-70 with Ukraine was ceased in early 2014 following the breakdown in relations between the two countries over the ousting of Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych and Russia's subsequent invasion and annexation of Crimea. With relations no better some two years later, Russia appears now to have abandoned the four-engined turboprop aircraft entirely, in favour of its own upgraded jet airlifter.

The VVS has received the first of 30 Il-76MD-90A aircraft that are expected to be delivered by 2020. Also referred to as the Il-476, the Il-76MD-90A is an upgraded variant of the Soviet-era Il-76 'Candid' that features a digital 'glass' cockpit as well as modernised flight, navigation, and communication systems. Structural improvements include a modified wing and reinforced landing gear. The engines have also been updated, giving the aircraft a 60-tonne payload (up from 40 tonnes for the baseline Il-76) and a 12% reduced fuel consumption.

The upgraded platform can fly up to 8,500 km with a 20-tonne payload (or 4,100 km with a 50-tonne load), which compares favourably to the 6,598 km with a 20-tonne payload of the An-70. The Il-76MD-90A has a 60-tonne payload compared with 47 tonnes for the An-70.

Previously the VVS has stated a requirement for 100 such aircraft (as well as about 40 Il-76MD-90A-derived Il-478 tankers and an expected 20 A-100 Airborne Warning And Control System [AWACS] platforms), of which 30 have so far been contracted.

The Russian Aerospace Force (VKS) ordered 50 Sukhoi Su-35S 'Flanker E' multirole fighters from Sukhoi in late December 2015, a United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) source told TASS-DEFENSE.

According to the source, the new order is valued at more than RUB60 billion (USD788 million) and the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Plant (KnAAZ, a Sukhoi affiliate) will build the aircraft. Thus, it will have had its hands full until 2020. In addition to this order, the period is to see the execution of China's order for 24 Su-35S's, while the company hopes to sign a contract with Indonesia for 12 aircraft soon. According to the source, initially, the Su-35S program was expected to pay its way after 72 aircraft had been built. If the contract with Indonesia is signed, a total of 134 fighters of the type will have been delivered to the customers before 2020.

According to the UAC source, talks with Algeria on 12 Sukhoi Su-32 tactical bombers - an export variant of the Su-34 'Fullback' - have made good progress, and the country may acquire up to 40 aircraft of the type.

Russia's order in 2009 for 48 Su-35S's has now been fulfilled, with most of the aircraft now delivered. A VKS Su-35S unit in Russia's Eastern Military District started flying the Su-35S in late December 2015, while another unit in the Primorsky Territory is slated to receive Su-35S's in 2016.

The Su-35S is billed by Sukhoi as a heavily upgraded fourth-generation super-manoeuvrable multirole fighter developed with the use of fifth-generation aircraft technologies. It features a sophisticated avionics suite based on a digital information management system, a cutting-edge radar with a long-range aerial target acquisition and increased multiple-target tracking/engagement capabilities, and enhanced thrust-vectoring engines.

Over 40 rocket launcher units of Russian army will be equipped with new Tornado-S 300mm MLRS.

Over 40 units of Russia’s advanced rocket launchers equipped wit the new Tornado-S MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) will enter into service with the Western Military District’s (WMD) artillery and motorized infantry formations, district spokesman Col. Igor Muginov said Saturday, January 16, 2016.
"The unique long-range 300-mm Tornado-S multiple launch rocket system can fire at a range of 120 kilometers [75 miles] and hit an area of over 60 hectares [150 acres]," Muginov said.

The Tornado-S was introduced in the Russian army as a replacement for the BM-30 Smerch in 2012. It uses rockets with the same caliber but has been enhanced to take advantage of Russia's proprietary satellite navigation network. The 9A53-S Tornado-S is an upgraded version of the BM-30 Smerch using 2x6 or 2x4 300mm rocket launcher tubes mounted on MZKT-79306 military truck chassis.

The Tornado-S’ is equipped with a new automated guidance system, a key characteristic, allowing for improved accuracy and simultaneous target data calculations. It is able to fire single rockets as well as full salvos of 12 guided rockets.

The spokesman added that the new launchers boast travel-to-combat mode deployment capabilities at a significantly reduced time.

Cluster warheads with self-guided multi-purpose submunitions fitted on Tornado-G systems are able to penetrate infantry and armored vehicles.

The cutting edge Tornado-S and Tornado-G systems are expected to replace Grad and Smerch launchers by 2020, as part of Russia's large-scale rearmament program.

Russia will deploy Ka-52 combat helicopters in Syria to protect Khmeimim air base
Jan 15, 2016

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 7 Ka10

Russian Kamov Ka-52 (NATO reporting name: Hokum-B) attack/scout helicopters carrying the Vitebsk electronic warfare system will deploy to Syria to provide security for the Russian task force at Khmeimim air base in Latakia, a defense industry source told TASS on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016.

“Ka-52 helicopters equipped with the Vitebsk electronic warfare system will be deployed to Syria soon. They will not only control the situation around the Khmeimim airfield, but also conduct combat search and rescue[CSAR] operations,” the source said.

He stressed that the Ka-52 deployment to Syria would be the first time the type has been used on a combat operation. The decision to send Ka-52s to a war zone also is due to the need to test them under such conditions. In addition, the Vitebsk EW system will be tested there too.

Thus, the Ka-52 will become another Russian-made type of armament, which baptism of fire will take place as part of the operation against the Russia-banned Islamic State terrorist group in Syria. According to military experts, Russia continues the testing of its latest weaponry during the counterterrorist operation in the Middle East.

Grand Nord : l’autre front russe

Stratégie et politique 18 janvier 2016

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 7 122

"Russia’s Strategic Missile Force continues receiving advanced engineering vehicles to enhance mobile missile systems’ maneuverability and survivability," the press office said.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry’s press office, the Strategic Missile Force’s four large units will receive 12 engineering and camouflaging vehicles in 2016.

"The engineering and camouflaging vehicle is designed for providing engineer support and camouflaging a missile system in the whole or its parts during a combat alert along patrolling routes and in the field," the press office said.

It was reported earlier that mine clearing vehicles of this type had entered service with the Strategic Missile Force’s large units based in Novosibirsk in West Siberia and Teykovo in central Russia.

In 2016, the Strategic Missile Force is expected to receive more than 70 engineering vehicles and 25 tons of engineer stores, including wheeled track plotters, universal mine layers, excavators and other equipment.

The 15M107 Listva remote-controlled mine clearing vehicle is designed to search for and clear mines planted along patrolling routes of Topol-M and Yars mobile ground missile systems.

The Listva mine clearing vehicle has been developed on the basis of the Vystrel KAMAZ-43269 armored combat vehicle’s chassis.

The Russian Strategic Missile Force is expected to receive about 20 Listva mine clearing vehicles by 2020.

Russia Warplanes In Syria Made 5,662 Sorties Since Operation Start

By ITARTASS -January 19, 2016

Aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces over nearly four months of the operation in Syria have made 5,662 sorties. The Russian military have also launched 97 cruise missiles on terrorist targets, head of the Chief Operations Directorate of the Russian General Staff Sergei Rudskoy said on Friday.

“Since September 30, the Russian Aerospace Forces in Syria have made 5,662 sorties, including 145 sorties made by strategic missile and long-range bomber aviation, the Russian military have also carried out 97 launches of sea-based and air-based missiles,” Rudskoy said.

The airstrikes are targeted at infrastructure facilities, fortified localities, at areas where the terrorist manpower and equipment are concentrated. Previously, Rudskoy said that “since December 25, 164 sorties have been flown and 556 terrorist targets have been attacked in the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia, Hama, Homs, Damascus, Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa.”

He said that Russian aircraft increased the rate of attacks in support of the Syrian governmental and opposition forces fighting the Islamic State terrorist group. According to the General Staff, Russian planes delivered 189 strikes against terrorists in Syria on December 24.

As of December 25, they had logged over 5,200 sorties since the beginning of the operation, with about 150 of them conducted by strategic and long-range bombers.

The Syrian Army continues to advance throughout the country, with its progress being most noticeable in Aleppo and Latakia provinces and in the suburbs of Damascus.

“Supported by the Russian Aerospace Force, the governmental forces continue their offensive on the militants throughout the country, having attained success in the provinces of Aleppo and Latakia and on the outskirts of Damascus,” Rudskoy said then.

The Syrian Army has liberated two settlements and seized a commanding height in Aleppo province with Russian aircraft’s support. According to Rudskoy, the Syrian troops expanded the security zone around Kweiris airbase considerably.

IS deprived of possibility to replenish supplies quickly

According to the official, the Russian air task force’s strikes against militants’ facilities in Syria have deprived them of the possibility to promptly replenish fuel and ammunition supplies.

Russian Navy Orders 6 Project 636.3 Improved Kilo SSK to Boost Pacific Fleet Submarine Force

The construction of six Project 636.3 (NATO reporting name: Improved Kilo-class) diesel-electric submarines, announced by Navy Shipbuilding Dept. chief Vladimir Tryapichnikov on January 16, will boost the Pacific Fleet’s submarine capabilities, a defense industry source told journalists on Tuesday.

"The Pacific Fleet’s needs 10-12 up-to-date diesel-electric submarines in the coming decade. Combined with the nuclear-powered submarine fleet, the number will ensure superiority over the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force on the maritime border and a parity with the US Navy," the source said.

The Pacific Fleet operates three Project 949A (Oscar II-class) nuclear-powered guided missile submarines (K-456 Tver, K-186 Omsk, K-150 Tomsk, with two more - K-132 Irkutsk and K-442 Chelyabinsk - being upgraded) and the Project 971 (Akula I-class) K-419 Kuzbass nuclear-powered attack submarine (four more ships in the class are in various phases of upgrade). In addition, the Pacific Fleet has six Project 877 (Kilo-class) diesel-electric submarines - the B-394 Nurlat, B-464 Ust-Kamchatsk, B-494 Ust-Bolsheretsk, B-187 Komsomolsk-on-Amur, B-190 Krasnoznamensk and B-345 Mogocha.

The construction of six Project 636.3 submarines will double the size of the diesel-electric force of the Pacific Fleet. According to the defense industry source, however, it needs 10-12 advanced diesel-electric boats to have the superiority over the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Thus, to attain the target, the Defense Ministry has either to build more Project 636.3 submarines for the Pacific Fleet or to upgrade the Project 877 diesel-electric submarines, updating their units and introducing the Kalibr ship-based missile system.

According to US publication Military Balance, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has two Harushio-class and 11 Oyashio-class diesel-electric submarines and five Soryu-class submarines as well. The ships of the classes can carry both torpedoes and cruise missiles, including US-made antiship RGM-84 Harpoons. In addition, the western part of the Pacific is patrolled by US Navy nuclear-powered submarines, in particular, Virginia- and Los Angeles-class ones, which weapons suites incorporate both torpedoes and RGM-109 Tomahawk land-attack and Harpoon antiship missiles.

The Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines are third-generation ships derived from the Project 877 and 636 diesel-electric designs. They have a low acoustic signature, a submerged speed of 20 knots, an endurance of 45 days, a total displacement of about 4,000 tons, and a complement of over 50. The Project 636.3 submarines feature the Kalibr missile system comprising 3M-54 and 3M-541 antiship and 3M-14 land-attack cruise missiles and advanced radio electronics as well.

Construction of Large Versatile Landing Ship for Russian Navy to begin in 2018

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 7 Krylov10

The construction of a large versatile landing ship is planned for 2018, Captain 1st Rank Vladimir Tryapichnikov, chief, Shipbuilding Dept., Russian Navy, has told the Russian News Service radio in an interview. The Lavina (Avalanche) project was first unveiled during the ARMY-2015 defense exhibiton.

Sure, such a large amphibious landing ship is being designed now. The foundation has been laid, and we have hashed out the requirements, and the implementation [of the design] will possibly commence in 2018, when we will launch the construction of the versatile landing ship," he said.

Tryapichnikov reminded that the Project 11711 Ivan Gren (NATO reporting name: Ivan Gren-class) large landing ship in construction by the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad would enter the Russian Navy’s inventory this year.

"We have got no reason to speak about it [Ivan Gren] slipping behind schedule to 2017. The Navy is paying close attention to large landing ships," the officer added.

The next ship in the class, the Pyotr Morgunov, is being built by Yantar too.

Krylov State Research Center Executive Director Mikhail Zagorodnikov told TASS previously that there was no doubt about the feasibility of developing a sophisticated versatile landing ship for the Russian Navy. "Unlike the Leader destroyer and ice breakers, the versatile landing ship will not require much development work, because its basic components have been developed to a large extent," Zagorodnikov said. "The ship’s feasibility is foreseeable."

According to Zagorodnikov, the basic elements of the versatile landing ships have been looked into. "We have reached agreement on its weaponry and most of its onboard systems. Its electric propulsion system is in development too. A simulator ship will be built specifically for working out the tactics, techniques and procedures for the helicopters the landing ship will carry," he added in this connection. "We can make the hull, which was proven graphically by Russian shipbuilders in the course of building two Mistral landing ships."

"We have gotten our hand in and are sure that we will develop the versatile landing ship," Zagorodnikov concluded.

According to early reports, Lavina cruising range will be 5,000 miles at a speed of 18 knots, max speed - 22 knots, with a crew of 320 sailors. The ship will be able to accomodate 500 marines and 50 armored vehicles. According to the source, Avalanche will be able to carry 16 helicoptersof types Ka-27, Ka-29 and Ka-52K for ASW, SAR and Strike missions. It is also expected to have on board six landing craft project 11770 Serna or six amphibious assault craft project 03160 "Raptor". The ship is set to be armed with a AK-176M gun mount and AK-630M-2 "Duet" CIWS. It will also be fitted with the new Pantsir-M Surface Ship Air Defense system.

Production of Zauralets-D 120mm self-propelled gun for Russian airborne troops may start in 2018.

The batch production of new Zauralets-D 120mm self-propelled gun (SPG), being developed for the Airborne Forces (AbF), may start by the end of 2018, according to the AbF chief, Colonel-General Vladimir Shamanov

"We have designed four levels of the program (Zauralets-D), based on the report by the TSNIITOCHMASH director general Dmitrii Semizorov. We are planning to get a high-precision munition at the final level. The time schedule for the whole program is supposed to be two or three years. I think, that we will have reached the final stage by the end of 2018. Then we will launch the batch production (of Zauralets-D)", Shamanov said.

He pointed out, that two Zauralets-D prototypes should be assembled at the beginning of the first quarter of 2017.

"After the briefing with deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov we will be developing the road map, where the issues of all further stages of the program will be reviewed", Shamanov added.

Zauralets-D SPG is being developed on the base of 2S25M Sprut-SDM1 air-droppable self-propelled anti-tank gun (SPATG). For the SPG TSNIITOCHMASH is making two types of main gun chambered for different shells, namely, 120mm and 152mm. Their ranges and projectile power will be increased, as compared to the actual artillery equipment. Zauralets-D SPG is intended to replace 2S9 Nona-S guns in the Russian Airborne troops.

Arctic infantry test drive new Ruslan ATV on mountainous snow in Russia
Jan 22, 2016

Russia’s Defence Ministry released footage of drills involving the new Ruslan All-Terrain-Vehicle which has been designed for operations in artic conditions, in Murmansk.

The Arctic Motorized Infantry division tested the vehicle over some of the roughest terrain as temperatures plummeted to -13 Celsius.

The Ruslan is the civilian TTM-4902 amphibious tracked vehicle procured for the Russian Ground Forces. Developed by JSC Transport in collaboration with the University of Nizhny Novgorod, the TTM-4902 has a KamaZ 300-horsepower turbo-diesel engine and can carry up to 22 persons or 2.5 tons of cargo.

Originally designed to service arctic pipelines of Russia’s oil industry, the TTM-4902 has four sets of independently powered tracks to give it good performance over rough and snowy terrain. The vehicle has wide treads giving it a good ground pressure ratio over snow, so the Arctic cruiser can make 29 miles per hour on the road and 5 mph in the water.
