The KC-390 Millennium new generation multi-mission medium airlifter has successfully concluded the testing campaign for gravity airdrop and extraction drop of heavy loads by the use of the Container Delivery System (CDS) and Low Velocity Air Drop (LVAD), respectively.
Embraer KC 390 Millennium airlifter successfully concludes airdrop testing campaignOver the 2019 airdrop campaign the KC-390 Millennium has delivered several containers by gravity with up to 24 containers in one pass, and multiple Type V platforms using extraction parachutes, with a total combined payload of 330 metric tons (Picture source: Embraer)
The KC-390 Millennium has a fully automated Cargo Handling and Aerial Delivery System on the cargo compartment, were a loadmaster can perform all activities, while reducing workload and improving awareness. For the pilots, a system called CCDP (Continuously Computed Drop Point) calculates the optimum airdrop release point for better accuracy on the mission accomplishment. Both Systems were developed by Embraer.
The tests, conducted by Embraer in cooperation with the Brazilian Air Force and Brazilian Army, were performed at the US Army Yuma Proving Ground facilities, in Arizona, USA. Major achievements of the testing campaign were the airdrop of a single maximum platform with 19 metric tons (42,000 lb) as well as the sequential aerial delivery of two platforms weighing 24 metric tons in total. Based on these results, the KC-390 Millennium becomes the only medium airlifter able to perform such extreme operation.
Over the 2019 airdrop campaign the KC-390 Millennium has delivered several containers by gravity with up to 24 containers in one pass, and multiple Type V platforms using extraction parachutes, with a total combined payload of 330 metric tons.
Additional achievements of the testing campaign were the following:
- Sequential aerial delivery by extraction with up to four platforms in one pass; - Airdrop by extraction using two 28-feet extraction parachutes with autopilot engaged; - Continuously Computed Drop Point (CCDP) system successfully tested for both gravity and extraction airdrop, demonstrating excellent accuracy.
The aircraft handling in all airdrop conditions was superb with the full fly-by-wire flight controls being very effective in handling aircraft´s pitch attitude changes during and after each load release. The most demanding airdrop conditions were performed without pilot intervention (fly-by-wire sidesticks in neutral position). The extremely positive feedback from Embraer and Brazilian Air Force pilots confirms the aircraft superior performance during airdrop operations.

Brazil conducts extreme cold weather trials for KC/C-390 in Alaska
by Gareth Jennings
Brazil has conducted extreme cold weather testing of the Embraer KC/C-390 Millennium transport aircraft in Alaska.
A KC/C-390 airlifter was flown to Fairbanks in Alaska for extreme cold weather trials earlier in February. (Brazilian Air Force)
The Brazilian Air Force (Força Aérea Brasileira: FAB) announced on 12 February that it had despatched one of its recently acquired airlifters to Fairbanks to be exposed to temperatures as low as -37.8°C (-47.8°C including wind chill).
“The Brazilian Air Force and Embraer started the tests of extreme cold (Cold Soak) of the KC-390 Millennium in the United States on 8 February. The mission aims to verify the integration of all subsystems and the robustness of the new FAB freighter in a hostile environment, with extremely low temperature conditions,” the service said.
As noted by the FAB, the test campaign was managed by the Coordinating Committee of the Combat Aircraft Program (COPAC), and includes representatives from the Institute for Promotion and Industrial Coordination (IFI), test engineers from the Flight Research and Testing Institute (IPEV), and members of Embraer. The aircraft operation was supported by the crew of the First Troop Transport Group (1st GTT) ‘Zeus’ Squadron.
“Unlike an environmental qualification regarding the component, the Cold Soak test aims to investigate, in terms of the system, the effect of exposing the aircraft to extremely low temperatures, for a considerable time on the ground, a situation in which the systems failure may lead to service difficulty events, in which the aircraft is unable to operate,” the FAB said.
After the requested exposure time, operational checks of the aircraft were conducted to verify the correct functionality of several systems, such as avionics, electric, hydraulic, flight controls, fuel, engines, auxiliary power unit (APU), and radar
