DATE:17/06/10 SOURCE:Flight International UAE reopens trainer talks By Stephen Trimble
Lockheed Martin has confirmed that the United Arab Emirates has resumed talks with rival bidders for a contract to supply a fleet of advanced jet trainer and light attack aircraft, about 16 months after signing an agreement with Alenia Aermacchi.
The UAE never finalised a planned contract to buy 48 M-346 Master jets after announcing an agreement in February 2009 at the IDEX exhibition in Abu Dhabi.
The defence ministry called a press conference at the Dubai air show last November to make an announcement about the agreement, but cancelled the event minutes before it was scheduled to begin.
The issue raised doubts about Alenia Aermacchi's ability to secure the deal against rivals from BAE Systems, offering the Hawk 128, and Korea Aerospace Industries/Lockheed with the T-50 Golden Eagle.
Asked whether Lockheed believes the UAE trainer/light attack jet deal is back in contention, Lockheed director of T-50 business development Doug Miller said: "Yes, I believe so."
Miller adds that the discussions with UAE officials are not formally acknowledged in Abu Dhabi. "But there's certainly renewed activity and discussions with the viable candidates," he says.
It's possible that the UAE could simply delay the contract award for a "number of years", Miller adds.

France and UAE Rafale Fighter Talks Underway Technical talks over the sale of Rafale fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by France are underway and could soon be finalised according to French Defence minister Hérvé Morin. Morin was quoted by France Info radio as saying that the discussion had been going on for months and was in the course of being finalised. In 2008, the UAE began talks with France regarding acquiring the latest-generation Rafale fighters to replace its 60 aging Mirage fighters. France is also ready to bear the modernisation costs, estimated to be about €2bn ($2.4bn) rather than the €4bn to €5bn ($4.9bn to $6.1bn) speculated earlier, according to Morin.

Rheinmetall wins $16 million contract for Naval Decoy Launchers from UAE
The navies of many nations know they can count on Rheinmetall’s MASS countermeasure system to protect their fleets from enemy missile attacks. Standing for “Multi Ammunition Softkill System”, MASS is the world’s most advanced system for protecting frigates, corvettes, minesweepers and patrol boats.
Outmanoeuvring the international competition, the company has just booked three more important orders for this state-of-the-art force protection system.
The United Arab Emirates have contracted with Rheinmetall Defence to equip its Abu Dhabi-class vessels and Falaj 2-class stealth ships with MASS technology. The German Navy, too, has placed an order to have four of its F125-class frigates equipped with the system. Volume for the three orders totals some EUR 12.5 million.
Since the product was first launched in 2002, Rheinmetall has sold 158 MASS launchers. It successfully penetrated the North American market in 2009, when Canada chose the system for its Halifax-class frigate programme, marking an important milestone on the product’s path to becoming standard NATO equipment.
Owing to its high reliability and negligible maintenance needs, MASS is well suited to the task of protecting Germany’s F125-class frigates, which are expected to remain on station in foreign waters for up to two years at a time. Designed to take the lead in future stabilization operations, the MASS-equipped F125 frigate will be well-protected from surface-to-surface missiles as well asymmetric threats in coastal areas.

Alenia Aermacchi aircraft chosen for the United Arab Emirates National Aerobatic Team
Alenia Aermacchi, a Finmeccanica company, has finalised with the United Arab Emirates two important contracts to provide the UAE Air Force with ten MB-339A aircraft in aerobatic configuration. The two contracts cover the upgrading and supply of MB-339A to the National Aerobatic Team (NAT) configuration. The agreement covered initially the conversion of six aircraft, already in the UAE inventory, followed by the acquisition of four additional MB-339. The update consists mainly of removing the tip tanks, modifying the fuel system and installing smoke generators capable of releasing smoke trails in the white, red, green and black colours of the UAE flag. Alenia Aermacchi is presently completing, in its Venegono factory, the work on the final four aircraft. This includes the application of an elegant and exclusive black and gold livery, specifically designed for the United Arab Emirates Display Team. The UAE decision to equip its NAT with the Aermacchi MB-339 is an important indication of the excellent relationship between its Air Force and the Finmeccanica’s company. Alenia Aermacchi is very honoured by the UAE appreciation of its aircraft, which are serving many valuable Air Forces worldwide. These include the Italian Air Force, that also uses the MB-339 to train its jet pilots and to equip its famous Frecce Tricolori team celebrating, this year, its 50th anniversary. Source: Alenia
