F-111 fans are outraged many of the iconic RAAF fighter jets have been dumped at a landfill site near Ipswich.
A RAAF spokesman confirmed to Ipswich News on Thursday that 23 of the planes had been dumped at the Swanbank landfill site.
The jets had been located at RAAF Base Amberley, near Ipswich, before being decommissioned late last year.
The F-111s have been replaced by the Super Hornets, with the final four being delivered from the US to Amberley with a spectacular flypast over southeast Queensland in October.
The US Government had placed tight restrictions on how the planes were be dismantled or preserved with several earmarked for museums around Australia.
Two are expected to be on show at RAAF Base Amberley at its Heritage Centre.
``It's just the hulks of the planes (that were dumped),'' the RAAF spokesman said. ``They saved the ones they could.''
Ipswich Councillor Paul Tully expressed his outrage about the dumping on his Facebook page.
``Fifty years of Australian history down the drain as the RAAF dumps F-111s down disused Ipswich coal mine at Swanbank,'' he posted.
Related comments included: ``What a waste! You would think these would be saved for a museum or at least if they were being thrown they should be offered for public interests.''
Another wrote: ``If the RAAF didn't want them, I am wondering if ICC (Ipswich City Council) were happy to take them and all the costs associated with restoration and display.''
Meanwhile, Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann has encouraged organisations to apply for one of seven F-111s left to be loaned to museums and other historical organisations.
He said Defence Materiel Minister Jason Clare had released a Request for Offer for the jets.
``This is a fantastic opportunity for local historical organisations to be able to display these iconic aircraft which protected our skies for nearly four decades'' Mr Neumann said.
``The Australian Government is loaning the aircraft so as many Australians as possible have access to this piece of our aviation history.
``The loans will be subject to a number of conditions to ensure the safe preservation of the aircraft, which are outlined in the Request for Offer.''
The RAAF spokesman said a service for all involved with the F-111s, including the families of airmen lost in crashes, will be held at the memorial garden near the front gate of RAAF Base Amberley at 9am on Friday, December 2.

28 November 2011 Minister for Defence Stephen Smith and Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today announced that the Government has approved the upgrade of all eight of the Royal Australian Navy’s Anzac Class frigates with an advanced Anti-Ship Missile Defence system.
The total project cost is in excess of $650 million, including the funds already spent upgrading HMAS Perth.
The ANZAC Class Anti-Ship Missile Defence (ASMD) project has also been removed from the Projects of Concern list.
The 2009 Defence White Paper outlined the Government’s intent to put all of the ANZAC Class ships through an ASMD upgrade program, subject to the successful outcome of at-sea trials on the first ship.
The upgrade of HMAS Perth as the lead ship for the ASMD program was successfully completed earlier this year.
Following exhaustive testing, including in theUnited States, the Chief of Navy agreed to the operational release of the system in July 2011.
Government has now approved the installation of the system on the remaining seven ships of the ANZAC class by 2017.
Minister Smith said this was the latest weapon in Navy’s arsenal and meant the Navy’s ANZAC frigates would be a lot more capable.
At the moment our ANZAC frigates can track and destroy one target at a time.
The new system is able to identify, track and guide missiles to multiple targets at the same time.
Minister Clare said the project was a great Australian success story – cutting edge technology developed right here inAustraliaby CEA Technologies.
The remaining upgrade installation and integration work will be undertaken by the ANZAC Ship Integrated Materiel Support Program Alliance, comprising SAAB Systems, BAE Systems and the Defence Materiel Organisation.
Minister Clare said that the ASMD upgrade program is a good demonstration of how the Projects of Concern process can effectively manage difficult projects and deliver successful national security outcomes forAustralia.

Final Tiger chopper handed to defence
Defence company Australian Aerospace has handed over the last of 22 Tiger armed reconnaissance helicopters (ARH) to the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
In a formal ceremony at the company's facility in Brisbane, chief executive Dr Jens Goennemann said it was a great day for Australian Army Aviation, the ADF and Australian Aerospace.
He said it also marked another important milestone in the ARH program.
"The Tiger ARH has been a complex and demanding program and one not without its fair share of challenges," he said in a statement on Thursday.
"But extensive collaboration and a cooperative approach by Australian Aerospace, our industry partners and the various ADF branches involved has been a significant contributor to where we proudly stand today."
The Tiger helicopters were ordered in 2001 in a $2 billion deal to replace Vietnam War-era Iroquois and Kiowa helicopters. The first four were manufactured in France and the rest assembled in Brisbane by Australian Aerospace, a subsidiary of Eurocopter.
The project encountered a series of technical problems and delays and was at one stage on the government's projects of concern list.
Australian Tigers are set to be declared fully ready for operational service next year, however, French Tigers have been flying operationally in Afghanistan for the last two years.
Thursday's handover ceremony was attended by representatives of the Commonwealth, aviation and aerospace companies, the Australian Defence Force plus senior management of Australian Aerospace and its parent Eurocopter.
Dr Goennemann said delivery of final Tiger ARH022 did not signify an end to Australian Aerospace's Tiger relationship with the ADF.
"Australian Aerospace will continue to work with Army to support, maintain and bring this important new platform to maturity within the ADF," he said.
Tiger represents a very significant increase in capability for the ADF.
Australian Aerospace says it's the world's most advanced armed reconnaissance helicopter, featuring advanced technology which makes it faster and more agile than competitors, such as the US Apache.
Tiger carries a crew of two - pilot and gunner - and is equipped with an advanced day and night surveillance system, a 30-mm cannon, 70mm freeflight rockets and, unlike French Tigers, the US Hellfire air-to-ground missile.

RAAF Wants C-27J Rather Than C295
LANGKAWI, Malaysia — Australia’s air force has made it clear publicly that it prefers the Alenia C-27J over the Airbus Military C295.
The chief of the Australian air force, Air Marshal Geoff Brown, says a letter of request (LOR) has been issued for the C-27J, but no such request has been issued for the C295. All that has been issued for the C295 is a request for information in regard to pricing, he says.
Australia has a long-standing requirement for tactical transport aircraft to fill the void created when the country’s military phased out its de Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou aircraft. It is clear that the C-27J is a more expensive aircraft, so the Australians may be using the C295 pricing to negotiate a more competitive deal with Alenia.
Brown says the issue the air force has with the C295 is there are some types of Australian army military vehicles that the C295 is unable to transport. He cites as an example the army’s new G-Wagon all-terrain vehicles.
He says armies in Europe may be content to just drive a G-Wagon, but “you have long distances in Australia,” so these vehicles have to be transported by air.
The Australian air force could use larger aircraft, such as its Lockheed Martin C-130s, to transport the G-Wagons. But Brown says “then you end up with small loads on the C-130 and this is not an efficient use” of the aircraft. He also says the air force wants to avoid a situation in which the Australian armed forces’ Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopters are used for airlifting such cargo. These helicopters are “better for tactical scenarios,” he adds.
Brown spoke to Aviation Week on the sidelines of the LIMA Airshow in Langkawi, Malaysia, on Dec. 7.
Airbus Military chief Domingo Urena-Raso also spoke to Aviation Week at the show. He says he hopes that Australia will open up the tactical transport requirement to a competition in which the C295 is allowed to participate.

Minister for Defence Stephen Smith and the Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today announced that the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) CH-47D Chinook fleet will be bolstered by a further two helicopters following the loss of one aircraft on operations in Afghanistan in May 2011.
The purchase of the additional CH-47D Chinooks, effected through Defence signing of a Letter of Offer and Acceptance with the United States will bring Australia’s total CH-47D Chinook fleet to seven.
The additional aircraft will reduce pressure on the training and maintenance schedule for the ADF Chinook fleet resulting in enhanced support to the two Chinook’s currently deployed to the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO).
The two additional aircraft have been sourced from the United States, and will be transported to Australia for servicing and modification to the current Australian CH-47D configuration. The aircraft are expected to arrive in Townsville by the end of January next year and are anticipated to be ready for domestic operations from mid-2012.
The CH-47D Chinook undertakes the medium-lift utility role with great versatility, including troop movement, battlefield equipment transport, search and rescue and disaster relief roles. The CH-47D Chinook aircraft has been an extremely capable workhorse since they entered ADF service in 1995.
This procurement will ensure the continued utility of Chinook aircraft on overseas operations, domestically through Defence Assistance to the Civil Community and in training and sustainment of aircrews.
The CH-47D Chinook have been deployed on Operation Slipper in Afghanistan since 2006. They have performed an outstanding service for both ADF and ISAF forces and are in high demand across Afghanistan due to its superior performance in hot and high altitude conditions.
The CH-47D fleet will be replaced with seven new CH-47F Chinook helicopters from around 2016.

HMAS Choules Commissioned
The Royal Australian Navy now has enhanced amphibious warfare capability with the commissioning in Fremantle today of Australia’s newest warship, the Bay Class Landing Ship HMAS Choules.
Choules, a former Royal Fleet Auxiliary which served the Royal Navy under the name Largs Bay, was renamed after Chief Petty Officer Claude Choules, Australia’s last surviving World War I veteran. Mr. Choules passed away in his home city of Perth in May 2011, aged 110.
HMAS Choules is now at the forefront of a new generation of amphibious capability for Navy in the period leading up to the arrival of the Landing Helicopter Dock ships in 2014.
The ship has been proven as a robust amphibious capability, having provided humanitarian relief as a part of the international response to the Haiti earthquake last year.
The 176 metre long vessel has a crew of 158 officers and sailors, and can accommodate two large helicopters, 150 light trucks and 350 troops. She also carries two mexeflotes, which are powerful landing raft designed to move goods and vehicles between the ship and the shore.
Following her commissioning in Western Australia, HMAS Choules will transit to the east coast to her home port at Fleet Base East in Sydney on 21 December.

Pour Rex Patrick, un ancien sous-marinier passé au privé, l’une des options envisagées doit être d’arrêter de jeter l’argent par les fenêtres sur les sous-marins actuels.
Il propose de désarmer 2 des 6 sous-marins actuels pour concentrer les équipages et les financements sur les 4 restants. Selon lui, cela permettrait d’augmenter — et pas de diminuer — le nombre de jours où les sous-marins seraient opérationnels.
Le rapport Coles explique que de nombreux problèmes que connaissent les sous-marins australiens sont dus au fait que l’Australie utilise des sous-marins classiques pour effectuer le travail de sous-marins nucléaires. « A cause de la position géographique de l’Australie, les sous-marins doivent pouvoir parcourir de grandes distances en plongée, sans escale, » indique le rapport.
« Alors que les sous-marins nucléaires sont capables de faire de telles choses, la décision australienne de conserver la propulsion classique, implique que ses besoins vont au-delà de ce qui est disponible “sur étagère”. »
Le Sénateur Johnston indique que, si le gouvernement proposait d’adopter la propulsion nucléaire, il obtiendrait probablement le soutien de l’opposition. mais c’est improbable puisque le parti au pouvoir est allié avec les Verts.
Pour certains militaires de haut-rang, le mieux serait de louer, pour 21 ans, des sous-marins nucléaires américains. Ils sont moins chers à acheter et à mettre en œuvre que des gros sous-marins classiques et plus rapides.

Un nouveau rapport dévastateur sur les sous-marins australiens de la classe Collins, avertit de graves risques de sécurité, découlant de l’inexpérience des équipages, du manque d’experts et du mauvais fonctionnement du système d’entretien.
Le rapport, commandé par le gouvernement australien, conclut que les problèmes sont désormais tellement répandus que c’est maintenant toute l’organisation sous-marine qui est « inadaptée aux besoins ».
Ces constatations cinglantes, contenues dans le premier rapport de la très attendue revue des sous-marins Coles, constitueront la base de la réforme la plus profonde du programme depuis que le premier sous-marin a été lancé en 1996.
Le ministère australien de la défense essaie de trouver des moyens de maintenir les sous-marins en état pour au moins 15 ans , jusqu’à ce que de nouveaux sous-marins soient construits.
Au cours des dernières années, seuls un ou 2 des 6 sous-marins étaient opérationnels à n’importe quel moment.
La revue des sous-marins de la classe Collins, menée par John Coles, a découvert que les problèmes dont souffraient la flotte, dépassaient désormais la question de la fiabilité et de l’entretien : il y a maintenant des problèmes de sécurité.
Dans ce que le rapport qualifie de « statistique inquiétante », il est indiqué que le manque de personnel signifie que, désormais, un tiers des sous-mariniers entraînés ont leur qualification depuis moins de 2 ans.
« Les équipages sont inexpérimentés. Et avec la disponibilité réduite des sous-marins, il devient de plus en plus difficile d’atteindre les niveaux requis d’entraînement, » indique le rapport.
« Lorsque les sous-marins connaissent des défauts ayant des conséquences sur la sécurité opérationnelle, les décisions — vivre avec ou rentrer au port pour réparer — sont prises par des personnes inexpérimentées. C’est un point inquiétant avec de profondes implications pour la sécurité. »
« Les sous-marins connaissent toujours un manque de fiabilité, d’équipage et d’entretien. Tout cela conduit à une mauvaise disponibilité. »
Le rapport considère qu’il manque d’experts des sous-marins, à la fois dans la marine et à Canberra — la capitale australienne où les décisions sont prises — « Il est difficile de trouver plus de 2 personnes pouvant sérieusement prétendre avoir des connaissances dans le domaine des sous-marins. »

j´ai comme l´impression qu´il y´a volonté quelque part a canberra de torpiller l´arme SM australienne pour peut etre economiser l´argent,ou changer le cap vers une autre source 16/30% c´est vraiment catastrophique comme taux,la se pose la question si vraiment necessaire de garder le prog avec des problemes chroniques

Pour des Pays comme l'Australie ou le Canada avec des ZEE énorme, Il y a une grande nécéssité pour avoir des SM pour des long période de patrouille. Avec la contrainte des coûts de MCO et la rareté des élements humains qualifiés, ca s'avère nécessaire d'avoir une flotte avec un nombre réduits de SM.
Alors là faut faire le bon choix, et c'est évident qu'il y a qu'un seul choix à faire, c'est de se doter d'un SM nuclèaire ! mais qu'on le choix est entre les mains d'un groupe d'incompétents, faut s'attendre à une catastrophe ... à croire qu'ils ont la résponsabilité de préserver l'argent du contribuable !!
Les 2 pays ont commis la même erreur, et se trouve aujourd'hui avec une flotte indisponible sur laquelle on fait le double des dépenses prévus ... mais aussi, une flotte dangereuse !
Maintenant avec le developpement de la situation au Pacifique, l'Australie se voit obliger de maintenir l'Arme SM ... c'est un argument qu'elle peut utiliser avec les ricains pour obtenir leur aide ... notamment mettre à leur diponibilité des SNA à long terme d'ici l'entrée en service des nouveaux SM ... d'ailleurs il y a un indice sur ceci à la fin du premier article

Il y a un problème réel qu'ont pas nier, c'est le manque d'équipage, et le manque d'expérience chez beaucoup des responsable de ce corps d'armes. Les solutions à la hates pour les opérations de réparation qui se sont avérées sans aucune utilité après peuvent sont là pour prouver ceci.
L'histoire des fuites du gaz pendant un récent exercice au Singapour, montrent aussi la défaillance des systèmes à bord, notamment le système de refroidissement, qui été pour infos sujet de nombreuses modifications dernièrement.
Sur l'ensemble des exercices ou ils participaient, les Collins font beaucoup parler d'eux ... Alors qu'ils devraient normalement passer en silence
Il est vrai que peut être des élements de l'opposition en Australie cherche à exploiter les rapports concernant l'etat opérationnel des Collins, médiatiquement pour leur propre compte, mais ca reste comme une exploitation de données officielles

08:32 GMT, December 19, 2011 Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, Senator David Feeney, and Commander 2nd Division, Major General Craig Williams AM, today announced major reforms for Army Reserve under Plan Beersheba at Simpson Barracks in Watsonia, Melbourne.
Senator Feeney said that Plan Beersheba, a restructure of the Australian Army, will achieve a greater integration of full and part time forces and strengthen the operational capability of our part time forces.
“In an increasingly complex strategic environment, we must make sure our forces are positioned for the full range of possible contingencies.
“Plan Beersheba positions Army to deliver capability in an effective, timely and affordable way to meet these contingencies,” Senator Feeney said.
“This Government will ensure that all Reserve Armoured Corps will receive Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicles to provide protected transport for our troops.
“This will be the first time in more than five years that all Army Reserve Armoured units will have armoured vehicles.
“In addition, under Beersheba we intend to create a new armoured squadron with protected vehicles in Queensland. This is a major boost to the capability of the Reserve.
“In Melbourne, the armoured unit of 4th Brigade – 4th/19th Prince of Wales Light Horse who famously fought at Beersheba – will get Bushmasters,” said Senator Feeney.
Commander 2nd Division, Major General Craig Williams said that the Army’s Reserve Force (2nd Division) will be realigned with the Regular Army, with two Reserve Brigades linked to each Multi-role Manoeuvre Brigade.
“There will be a significant increase in the operational focus of the Reserve which will be effected through the development of habitual relationships between reserve brigades and the regular Multi-role Manoeuvre Brigades,” Major General Williams said.
“The 2nd Division will be aligned with the 36 month Force Generation Cycle and assigned preparedness levels.”
Defence Reserves Association (DRA) President, Major General Jim Barry (Retd) said:
“This is the most important structural change for the Army Reserve in decades.
“The six Army Reserve Brigades of 2 Division are now assigned specific roles and tasks and are structurally aligned with their regular counterparts. There is now a defined operational focus which the DRA has been advocating for some time,” Major General Jim Barry (Retd) said.
Plan Beersheba is the Australian Army’s plan for the next phase of the Adaptive Army Campaign. It follows the changes in Army’s command and control structure made during 2008.
Under the plan, the 1st, 3rd and 7th Brigades will form three new Multi-role Manoeuvre Brigades. These Brigades will be fundamentally alike in structure to enable sustained operations within a new 36-month Force Generation Cycle.
Force Generation is the process through which Army readies itself to respond to contingencies that may arise. Each Brigade will have the following components – infantry, armour, artillery, engineers, logistics and communications.
Australia’s Reserve Force will be more focused on stability operations and will be involved in major exercises with their partnered Multi-role Manoeuvre Brigades.

Le chef de la marine australienne écarte l’idée de la propulsion nucléaire
Il est hors de question que la marine australienne dispose de sous-marins nucléaires, selon son chef, le vice-amiral Ray Griggs.
La publication de l’audit sur la flotte sous-marine australienne a provoqué un nouveau débat sur le fait de savoir si l’Australie devait construire de nouveaux sous-marins.
Le porte-parole de l’opposition, le sénateur David Johnston, a indiqué que, si le gouvernement proposait de construire des sous-marins à propulsion nucléaire, il aurait le soutien de l’opposition.
Cependant, l’amiral Griggs a déclaré que, « en ce qui concerne les sous-marins à propulsion nucléaire, la position du gouvernement a toujours été claire : la seule chose à faire est de rejeter la propulsion nucléaire. »
Le Japon envisage d’assouplir l’interdiction de ventes d’armes à des pays étrangers. Cela pourrait ouvrir la porte à l’Australie pour acheter des sous-marins classiques japonais, généralement très bien considérés.
Il a aussi été proposé d’économiser une partie des sommes consacrées à l’entretien et au soutien des 6 sous-marins actuels, près de 800 millions $ par an, en désarmant immédiatement 2 des 6 sous-marins, et en lançant un programme d’achat de sous-marins européens, plus petits mais plus modernes et fiables.
Selon une source européenne, un tel achat couterait 16 milliards $ de moins que son équivalent construit en Australie.
Le Canberra Times a appris que la 1ère partie de cette proposition pourrait être déjà appliquée dans les faits.
Certains prétendent qu’au moins un des sous-marins Collins serait cannibalisé à une grande échelle pour fournir des pièces détachées afin de permettre aux 5 autres de naviguer. Ce sous-marin ne serait pas capable de prendre la mer à nouveau, sans une remise en état importante.
Le ministère de la défense n’a pas encore répondu à des demandes d’information à ce sujet.

Cet audit a été demandé à la suite de révélations que la plupart, et parfois tous, les sous-marins australiens étaient incapables de prendre la mer et que les couts d’entretien avaient fortement augmenté.
Le ministre de la défense a indiqué que les recommandations contenues dans l’audit allaient commencer immédiatement.
« Le rapport montre des difficultés très profondes et qui durent depuis longtemps, en ce qui concerne l’entretien et le soutien des sous-marins de la classe Collins, » a indiqué Stephen Smith. « Il met en lumière de graves défaillances sur une longue durée et attire l’attention sur la nécessité de réformes fondamentales dans la façon dont l’entretien et le soutien est effectué. Le rapport fait lui-même une lecture très salutaire, il est sans concession sur ce que je considère comme une difficulté systémique de l’entretien des sous-marins. »
Le rapport a identifié une série de défaillances, dont une mauvaise disponibilité, un manque de cohésion au niveau de l’état-major, un manque de clarté au niveau des responsabilités, des exigences peu claires et des objectifs irréalistes.
Il recommande d’augmenter les réserves de pièces de rechange, d’augmenter la formation et de développer un contrat de soutien en service entre la Defence Materiel Organisation et Australian Submarine Corp., le constructeur des sous-marins.
La 2è partie de cet audit est attendue en avril.

Un audit sur les capacités amphibies de la marine australienne a été remis au gouvernement australien en juillet dernier. Il a directement conduit au projet d’acheter un 3è bâtiment pour compléter le Choules et le navire actuellement en service, le Tobruk.
Pour assurer la permanence dans l’intervalle, la marine loue un navire commerciale, le Windemere, auprès d’un armateur civil.
« Nous allons rechercher un navire civil sur étagère, pour lequel le minimum de modifications sera nécessaire. L’objectif est que ce navire entre en service dans le courant de 2012, » a déclaré le ministre de la défense, Stephen Smith. Le nouveau navire « sera principalement utilisé pour le transport de troupes et d’approvisionnement dans le cadre d’opérations de soutien humanitaire ou de catastrophes naturelles, en Australie et dans la région. »
Les 2 ministres ont aussi annoncé une étude sur des méthodes alternatives de former les équipages de certains bâtiments, avec un mélange de militaires et de civils, sur le modèle du Military Sealift Command de l’US Navy ou de la Royal Fleet Auxiliary britannique.

Australia is one of our most important allies in the Western Pacific. The strategic location of this political and economic power contributes significantly to ensuring peace and economic stability in the region. Australia views interoperability with U.S. Forces as an important goal and objective for equipment acquisition. Accordingly, and in line with the overall procurement strategy, Australia seeks an acquisition FMS case that supports the procurement of the C-27J aircraft.
The proposed sale will allow the Australian Defense Force (ADF) to improve its capability to meet current and future air mobility needs and humanitarian operations and disaster relief efforts in Southeast Asia. The ADF retired its fleet of 14 DHC-4 Caribou aircraft in 2009 and will soon retire 12 C-130H aircraft. The proposed sale of C-27J’s will provide the capability needed to meet operational needs and emerging requirement. Australia will have no difficulty absorbing the C-27J and support into its armed forces.
The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
The prime contractor will be L3 Integrated Systems Group in Waco, Texas. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale. Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Australia.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale. This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.

The Australian Defence Force is trying to recruit laid-off soldiers, sailors and air crew from Britain, the US and other western countries in order to fill recruitment quotas.
Australia is reportedly looking for defence specialists, such as fighter pilots, submarine crews and officers and are offering fast-tracked citizenship as an incentive, The Australian reported on Tuesday.
According to the newspaper the Royal Australian Navy has sent a delegation to Britain to discover how many retrenched sailors, particularly engineers, were available.
A report on maintenance in Australia's navy suggested that as many as 200 engineers were needed to rebuild lost expertise.
But the Australian navy chief Ray Griggs has told his British counterpart, First Sea Lord Admiral Mark Stanhope that we will not poach any people that they need.

U-boats may be on navy's shopping list
Australia's ''future submarine'' could be a super U-boat built by a German company that made many of the submarines that nearly brought Britain to its knees in World War II.
HDW has released details of a concept design, designated the Type 216, for a long-range conventional submarine.
Experts say the design, based on the successful Type 214, is specifically targeted at Sea 1000 - Defence's future submarine program.
Rex Patrick, a former submariner and the director of Acoustic Force, said yesterday the information available indicated Type 216 would meet the requirements spelt out in the 2009 Defence white paper and there was no reason the submarines could not be built in Adelaide.
''I think they [HDW] have been working on the Type 216 for some time with candidates like Australia, India and Canada in mind,'' he said.
Another HDW design, the Type 209, is the basis for three submarines Indonesia is buying from Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine Engineering.
The $1billion contract for the three, two of which will be built in South Korea and one in Indonesia, was signed on December 20.
Defence has been considering a number of European submarines, including the HDW 214, the Spanish Navantia S-80 and French DCNS Scorpene, as replacements for the trouble-plagued Collins for some time. It has confirmed ''requests for information'' are to be sent to the three manufacturers.
Defence has also signed a contract with Babcock to research a land-based submarine propulsion test facility and a ''Future Submarine Industry Skills Plan'' is being prepared.
While Defence has acknowledged the European vessels offer proven designs and shorter delivery times than an Australian-designed submarine, the concern is they are too small to meet Australia's broad needs as outlined in the 2009 white paper.
The ''supersized'' HDW Type 216 may change that. It is more than twice the size of the three submarines that have just been commissioned by Indonesia. Designated the Type 1400, the Indonesian boats will still be very capable. The first is expected to be in use by 2015 with the second scheduled for delivery in 2018.

The fourth Airbus Military A330 MRTT multi-role tanker transport for the Royal Australian Air Force has been formally handed over to the service, leaving just one aircraft of its order still to be delivered.
Known as the KC-30A in RAAF operation, this particular aircraft is the only one for the RAAF to have been converted from the basic A330 in Madrid, the others having been converted by Qantas Defence Services in Brisbane, Australia. It took part in the A330 MRTT development programme and has been extensively renovated prior to delivery in Madrid.
Following the handover the aircraft will remain in Spain for continued test work and will be transferred to RAAF Base Amberley, Queensland later in the year. The fifth and final aircraft will be delivered in the third quarter of the year.
The A330 MRTT recently underwent successful refuelling trials in Australia with a RAAF F/A-18 fighter and earlier this month was displayed by the RAAF at the LIMA Airshow in Malaysia.
It is the world’s most advanced air-to-air tanker and the only certified and flying new generation tanker/transport aircraft in existence. It will substantially increase the aerial refuelling and logistical capabilities of the RAAF.
In RAAF service, the aircraft are equipped with two underwing refuelling pods, the fly-by-wire Airbus Military Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS), and a Universal Aerial Refuelling Receptacle Slipway Installation (UARRSI) enabling it to be refuelled from another tanker. Powered by two General Electric CF6-80E engines, the aircraft are equipped with a comprehensive defensive aids suite (DAS) and fitted with 270 passenger seats.
About the A330 MRTT
Having received its supplemental type certificate from European civil certification Authority EASA in March 2010 and military certification from Spanish Authority INTA in October 2010, the Airbus Military A330 MRTT is the only new generation strategic tanker/transport aircraft flying and available today. The large 111 tonnes/ 245,000 lb basic fuel capacity of the successful A330-200 airliner, from which it is derived, enables the A330 MRTT to excel in Air-to-Air Refuelling missions without the need for any additional fuel tank. The A330 MRTT is offered with a choice of proven airto-air refuelling systems including an advanced Airbus Military Aerial Refuelling Boom System, and/or a pair of under-wing hose and drogue pods, and/or a Fuselage Refuelling Unit.
Thanks to its true wide-body fuselage, the A330 MRTT can also be used as a pure transport aircraft able to carry 300 troops, or a payload of up to 45 tonnes/99,000 lb. It can also easily be converted to accommodate up to 130 stretchers for Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC). To date, a total of 28 A330 MRTTs have been ordered by four customers (Australia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom), with Saudi Arabia having already placed a repeat order.

ALFS is the primary undersea warfare sensor for the U.S. Navy's MH-60R multimission helicopter. The contract represents the first international sale of Raytheon's advanced anti-submarine warfare sensor.
ALFS provides critical undersea warfare mission support capabilities, including submarine detection, tracking, localization, classification, acoustic intercept, underwater communication and environmental data collection.
This contract modification follows two previously awarded contracts, totaling $141.5 million, for ALFS systems, spares and repairs for U.S. Navy inventory. The first contract, awarded by Naval Air Systems Command, was valued at $81.7 million for the manufacture, integration, testing and delivery of ALFS systems for the U.S. Navy. The second contract, from Defense Logistics Agency Aviation Strategic Acquisition, valued at $59.8 million, provided for spares and weapons replaceable assemblies for fleet-deployed systems, systems under test, and helicopter maintenance trainer assets.
"ALFS is a key tenet of our naval strategy, providing us a robust, rapid and far-reaching anti-submarine warfare capability," said U.S. Navy Captain Jim Glass, program manager for the MH-60 helicopter. "Now with the sale to Australia, we are providing our airborne ASW sensor of choice to advance the capabilities of a valued, allied fleet."
The system's performance and capabilities continue to be proved during U.S. Navy undersea warfare exercises. Navy officials report on results, stating that the carrier strike groups consistently detect all exercise submarines during deployment. ALFS is deployed as the primary anti-submarine warfare sensor onboard the MH-60R helicopter, charged with defending the surface ships before the submarines come within range to launch an attack.
