As reported by Boyko Nikolov in Bulgarian Military, the Finnish sniper weapon system Sako TRG M10 was selected for the new long-range rifle by the Canadian government and according to information circulated in the Canadian media 229, units of this sniper rifle should be delivered by the end of 2022.

The TRG M10 is a bolt-action sniper rifle that is available in multiple calibers, manually operated and shoulder-fired, as well as magazine-fed. It has a high-capacity magazine and fully adjustable stock that make it a multi-functional system in a single weapon, suitable for many different circumstances. A high level of configurability make the TRG M10 an extremely versatile platform: it easily converts from a true long-range precision rifle to a more compact piece of equipment. The maximum operating range is up to 1,500 meters, but the proven effective range is up to 1,200 meters.

Fully adjustable rear stock: all adjustments can be done quickly without the use of any tools. The stock can also be securely locked down when required by using tools that come inside the weapon. The pistol grip has an interchangeable back strap in three different sizes; all three are included in the standard package. Tactile indicators: identification of modular components for different calibers can be done visually or from tactile indicators placed on each critical component. Ambidextrous controls: the ambidextrous controls are well within the reach of the firing hand and are large enough to be also operated with gloves on. The robust and fully adjustable trigger unit can be detached for maintenance and adjustment without further disassembling the weapon.

Saco TRG M10 is considered an evolution in the design of sniper rifles and was officially unveiled more than ten years ago, in October 2011. One of the impressive key features is the ability of the sniper rifle to switch from one to the second caliber: between .308 Winchester [7.62 × 51mm NATO], .300 Winchester Magnum, and .338 Lapua Magnum chamberings by changing the bolts: the TRG M10 has indicators that help identify different modular components for different calibers, where each caliber-depending component is specially marked so users can recognize the caliber of each part visually or by touch. To completely switch from one caliber to another, the shooter still has to change magazines, forends, and barrels.

First two A330s contracted for RCAF


Canada has contracted the first two Airbus A330 aircraft for service with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) under the Strategic Tanker Transport Capability (STTC) Programme.
The RCAF plans to replace the existing fleet of Airbus CC-150 Polaris (based on the Airbus A310) transports and tankers by a number of Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transports (MRTT).
The first two aircraft for this programme, both built in 2015, have now been contracted for USD 102 million. The total number of aircraft for the STTC is six aircraft.
These first two commercial aircraft will later be modified by Airbus Defence and Space to military specifications required to serve as multi-role aircraft within the STTC fleet, and they will play an integral role in providing air-to-air refuelling, strategic airlift, aeromedical evacuations, and strategic Government of Canada personnel transport, including transport of the Prime Minister, Governor General, and others, for decades to come.






These two aircraft are expected to arrive in Canada in winter 2023, where they may be placed into early service in passenger/cargo roles awaiting their modification to military specifications. The aircraft being purchased are currently configured for long-haul commercial use.

According to information published by the Canada National Defense Department, the Canadian Department of National Defense has ordered 39 additional ACSV Armored Combat Support Vehicles to replace armored vehicles it donated to Ukraine earlier this year.

During the NATO leaders summit that was held in Madrid from 29 to 30 June 2022, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will deliver 39 8x8 Armored Combat Support Vehicles (ACSVs).

In September 2019, Canada announced a contract with General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada for the acquisition of 360 Armored Combat Support Vehicles (ACSV). The vehicle is an 8x8 armored vehicle which is based on the LAV 6.0 and will replace the current Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) II Bison and M113 Tracked LAV fleets in service with the Canadian army. The new vehicles will be supplied in eight variants including APC (Armored Personnel Carrier), ambulance, command post, electronic warfare, engineer, cargo, maintenance and recovery, and mobile repair.

The Industrial and Technological Benefits (ITB) Policy was applied to the ACSV Implementation Contract. The total ITB obligation is $1.775 billion. The contract was awarded through a non-competitive process following direct engagement with General Dynamics Land Systems – Canada, the Original Equipment Manufacturer of the Light Armored Vehicle 6.0.

The ACSV is based on the LAV 6.0 platform, an improved version of the LAV III 8x8 armored vehicle with an inherent Double-V hull and energy-attenuated seats providing a high level of protection against ballistic and mine threats. The vehicle also features an upgraded driveline, suspension, larger tires, and a more powerful engine to deliver significantly increased payload and superior mobility performance.

The ACSV is powered by a Caterpillar C9 engine developing 450 hp. coupled to a ZF transmission with 7 forward and 1 reverse speed. The vehicle can run at a maximum speed of 100 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 600 km.

Canadian government clears USD5.4 billion budget to buy 16 F-35 Lightning II fighter jets

The Canadian government has approved funding to purchase the first batch of Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jets: Canada’s Treasury Board gave the Department of National Defence the green light to spend CA$ 7 billion (US$5,14 Billion) on the jets, Vakius Venckunas reports in Aero Time. News of the funding decision caught Saab unawares on Tuesday, December 20: "Given that Saab remains eligible for selection in the formal procurement process, we are surprised by today's media report," Saab Canada spokeswoman Sierra Fullerton said in a statement. "Saab is committed to the offer we made to the government of Canada, which was significantly less than the $19 billion budgeted for the full 88 aircraft requested."

Roll out first RCAF Airbus A330


On 31 May 2023, Canada's first Airbus A330 showed its Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) colours at Basel/Mulhouse (France). The aircraft, with last three of serial 002 on the nose, is painted in VIP-colours with Gouvernement du Canada/Government of Canada titles.


The RCAF will replace the existing fleet of Airbus CC-150 Polaris (based on the Airbus A310) transporters and tankers by a number of Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transports (MRTT) under the Strategic Tanker Transport Capability (STTC) Programme. In July 2022, the first two aircraft for this programme, both built in 2015, were contracted for USD 102 million. The total number of aircraft for the STTC is six. Scramble Magazine first wrote on the STTC programme in April 2021.


The now contracted aircraft are both former Kuwait Airways, registered 9K-APC (msn 1653) and 9K-APD (msn 1678). Canada will "number" the aircraft as CC-330, with serials 330001 etc. Serial 330002 is the former 9K-APC, as was confirmed today, 1 June, at Basle/Mulhouse. This Airbus arrived there as flight KU8235 from Chateauroux (France), where it arrived on 7 May 2023.


The decision to replace the ageing A310s stems from the increasing challenges of maintaining the aging fleet. As these aircraft have grown older, maintenance issues have escalated, making it imperative to bring in newer, more reliable alternatives. The A330s, larger in size and boasting an extended range, are set to take over the role of their predecessors. However, the transition will not initially include the prime minister’s traditional VIP quarters, as the retrofit process may take up to two years or more. To expedite the deployment of the new jets, the federal government has decided to retain the seating configuration as ordered by the Kuwaitis, at least for an interim period.


Delivery to Canada is expected this summer.

L’issue de l’appel d’offres ASTRV [Avion stratégique de transport et de ravitaillement en vol], lancé par Ottawa afin de remplacer les cinq CC-150 « Polaris » de l’Aviation royale canadienne [ARC], ne laissait guère de place au doute étant donné que seul l’A330 MRTT d’Airbus était en lice après l’élimination du KC-46A Pegasus de Boeing… et que, en juillet 2022, deux A330-200 d’occasion furent acquis auprès de la société International AirFinance Corporation afin de les convertir ultérieurement en avions ravitailleurs. Cependant, seul le nombre d’appareils à commander restait à préciser. Ce qui vient d’être fait.

En effet, le 25 juillet, le ministère canadien de la Défense a indiqué que neuf CC-330 « Husky » seront mis en oeuvre par le 437e Escadron de l’ARC. À cette fin, un contrat d’une valeur de 2,46 milliards d’euros a été notifié à Airbus.

Dans le détail, quatre A-330 MRTT seront assemblés à Toulouse et à Getafe [Espagne] avant d’être livrés à l’ARC en 2027. En outre, Airbus aura à convertir en avion ravitailleur cinq A330-200 d’occasion [dont les deux acquis par le Canada l’an passé].

« Les A330 MRTT seront équipés d’un système de perche, de tuyaux et de paniers pour [différentes] options de ravitaillement, ainsi que de solutions de cybersécurité et de contre-mesures. Tous ces appareils pourront être équipés du kit d’évacuation médicale d’Airbus, qui comprend deux unités de soins intensifs et des civières supplémentaires », a expliqué Airbus, via un communiqué.

Et d’ajouter : « Le contrat couvre une gamme complète de services de formation, incluant les solutions les plus avancées tels que le simulateur de vol complet, afin de préparer et d’assurer le maintien de la qualification des équipages ».

Pour le ministère canadien de la Défense, le CC-330 donnera à l’ARC une « plus grande souplesse pour remplir une variété de missions avec le même appareil ». Outre le ravitaillement en vol, qui sera son rôle principal, il permettra de « transporter simultanément un grand nombre de membres des forces armées canadiennes [FAC] et leur équipement à l’appui d’opérations et d’activités de formation au Canada et dans le monde entier » ainsi que d’effectuer des « missions spécialisées d’évacuation sanitaire ».

« L’avion CC-330 augmentera la capacité de l’ARC de répondre à des exigences opérationnelles imprévues et à court terme, comme les urgences nationales et internationales ou les missions de secours humanitaire » tout en permettant au Canada de « respecter ses engagements en matière de défense collective envers ses alliés, dans la conduite des opérations de l’Otan et du Commandement de la défense aérospatiale de l’Amérique du Nord [NORAD] », a précisé le ministère canadien de la Défense.

Selon Airbus, à ce jour, 76 A330 MRTT ont été commandés par 15 clients différents. Cet avion « cumule 90 % de parts de marché hors des États-Unis et plus de 270 000 heures de vol » et il a « fait ses preuves au combat sur différents théâtres d’opérations tels qu’au Moyen-Orient et sur le flanc est de l’Europe », a-t-il souligné.

Bordé par trois océans [Arctique, Atlantique et Pacifique], le Canada n’est pas à l’abri de « frictions » avec la Russie [voire, dans une moindre mesure, avec la Chine], en particulier dans la région du Grand Nord, où Moscou a des prétentions territoriales en se basant sur les dorsales Lomonossov et Mendeleïev, considérées comme étant des extensions de son plateau continental. Pour autant, et alors que la situation mondiale continue de se dégrader, Ottawa ne semble pas avoir pris la pleine mesure de ces défis sécuritaires et tiré les leçons de l’histoire.

Ainsi, lors de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, le Canada fut non seulement visé par les U-Boot allemands, comme lors de la « bataille du Saint-Laurent », entre 1942 et 1944, mais aussi par les sous-marins japonais, l’un d’entre eux ayant attaqué l’île de Vancouver, laquelle abritait une importante station de radiogoniométrie dans le Pacifique Nord. Durant la Guerre Froide, l’Arctique suscita l’intérêt de l’Union soviétique, au point que cette région connut la plus forte concentration de sous-marins nucléaires…

Quoi qu’il en soit, en raison de polémiques « politiciennes », comme au sujet de l’achat de chasseurs-bombardiers américains F-35A, de décisions discutables et d’un sous-investissement chronique depuis la fin de la Guerre Froide, les forces armées canadiennes sont actuellement « à l’os ».

C’est particulièrement le cas de la Marine royale canadienne [MRC], au point que son commandant, le vice-amiral Angus Topshee, a diffusé une vidéo sur les réseaux sociaux pour alerter sur « l’état critique » dans lequel elle se trouve. Une telle démarche est inédite…

L’une des raisons de cette situation est budgétaire, les dépenses miliaires canadiennes, rapportées au PIB, étant les plus faibles au sein de l’Otan. Et cela ne va pas s’arranger, après la décision du gouvernement emmené par Justin Trudeau de les réduire d’un milliard de dollars canadiens [700 millions d’euros] lors du prochain exercice fiscal.

« La MRC est actuellement confrontée à des défis très sérieux, ce qui pourrait signifier que nous ne parviendrons pas à respecter nos engagements en matière de posture de force et de préparation en 2024 et au-delà », a ainsi prévenu le vice-amiral Topshee.

La première lacune porte sur les effectifs de la Marine royale canadienne, certaines spécialités affichant un déficit en personnels de 20%, si ce n’est davantage. Pour son commandant, la faute en incombe au service de recrutement des forces armées canadiennes, lequel n’a pas réussi à tenir ses objectifs depuis dix ans.

Et cela n’est pas sans conséquence : actuellement, la MRC ne peut armer qu’un seul de ses quatre patrouilleurs arctiques et extracôtiers de la classe Harry DeWolfe. En outre, a expliqué le vice-amiral Topshee, une « pénurie de techniciens qualifiés limite notre capacité à entretenir et à exploiter nos navires, ce qui nous amène à donner la priorité aux frégates de la classe Halifax au détriment des navires de défense côtière de la classe Klingston ».

Un autre souci est le retard pris pour le remplacement des douze frégates de la classe Halifax… Retard qui va obliger la MRC à faire des efforts significatifs pour les maintenir en service jusqu’en 2040 alors que leur durée de vie opérationnelle, commencée dans les années 1990, avait été fixée à trente ans.

Pour rappel, il est prévu de remplacer ces navires par quinze frégates de Type 26 de conception britannique. En 2021, il fut avancé que le coût du programme était passé de 26 à 77,3 milliards de dollars canadiens… et que la première unité ne serait pas livrée avant 2031.

« C’est un défi considérable… J’aurais aimé qu’il n’en soit pas ainsi, mais je crains qu’il n’y ait tout simplement pas d’autre choix », a regretté le vice-amiral Topshee dans sa vidéo. Mais cela aura aussi des conséquences au niveau opérationnel.

« Actuellement, la MRC n’a pas la capacité de détecter les incursions dans ses eaux territoriales des nouvelles flottes sous-marines russe et américaine. Même s’ils ont été modernisés, les sous-marins conventionnels de classe Victoria et les frégates de classe Halifax ne disposent pas de coque renforcée leur permettant de patrouiller dans l’extrême nord arctique », a en effet souligné le Centre d’études stratégiques de la Marine [CESM], dans un note publiée en 2018.

Justement, les quatre sous-marins de la MRC défraient la chronique depuis leur achat auprès du Royaume-Uni, à la fin des années 1990 pour 750 millions de dollars canadiens. Et cela en raison de leur taux de disponibilité, proche du zéro, malgré des efforts financiers significatifs pour les maintenir en condition opérationnelle.

Aussi, la MRC voudrait obtenir douze nouveaux sous-marins… Mais elle devra surtout s’armer de patience, le vice-amiral Topshee ayant en effet précisé que le « projet de sous-marin de patrouille canadien » pourrait se concrétiser « au milieu des années 2030 ».

Canada orders fleet of General Atomics MQ-9B SkyGuardian RPAS


The Government of Canada has entered into an agreement to procure a fleet of MQ-9B SkyGuardian Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS)
from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI). This contract encompasses the acquisition of Certified Ground Control Stations and
associated support equipment from GA-ASI, with the initial delivery anticipated in 2028.

Saab has received an order from the Government of Canada for the RBS 70 NG SHORAD (Short-Range Air Defence) system.


Press Release, Linkoping, 15 February 2024: Saab has received an order from the Government of Canada for the short-range air defence system RBS 70 NG. The order value is approximately CAD 227 million (SEK 1.8 billion) with deliveries starting during 2024.

The order includes all necessary equipment to operate the RBS 70 NG, including firing units, missiles, transport vehicles, training and support. Following a competitive procurement process, Saab’s offer was chosen to meet the urgent operational requirement for Canada’s Soldier Portable Air Defence System Program. Through this programme, Saab will provide long term air defence support to the Canadian Armed Forces, with a specific focus on their Enhanced Forward Presence in Latvia. As part of its offer, Saab has committed to creating Canadian content through its local office and Canada-based partners and suppliers.

“We are pleased to deliver our proven and efficient air defence solution RBS 70 NG, which is a critical capability for nations in the current environment”, says Saab’s President and CEO Micael Johansson.

RBS 70 NG is a short-range air defence system manufactured by Saab. It is characterised by its unjammable laser-beam guidance and auto-tracking technology. Saab has RBS 70 NG customers globally, including Brazil, the Czech Republic and Latvia.

Canada's new CE-145C Vigilance

In July 2018, the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) made public that they intended to order three new Beechcraft 350ER King Airs as Manned Airborne Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (MAISR) aircraft.

The King Airs were ordered through the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme. The twin-turboprop aircraft have been configured with military grade advanced sensors, and secure communications equipment. MAISR will have the capacity to be deployed on short notice and will provide the armed forces with better situational awareness on the ground and thus positively affect the ability of commanders to make decisions leading to mission success.

The agreement with the US Government was finalised in April 2019 and has a total value of CAD 247 million (USD 187 million). In December 2019, Textron Aviation (USA) was awarded a USD 37,2 million FMS contract to supply three Beechcraft King Air 350ER aircraft.

In November 2020, the Department of National Defence (DND) awarded L3Harris Technologies a firm-fixed price contract of an undisclosed amount to modify three King Air 350ERs into intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft for the country’s special operations forces. Two aircraft are still with L3 Harris in the USA for integration work and painting.

The three King Airs were registered to Textron Aviation at Redstone-Arsenal (AL) for this purpose, and have the following construction numbers: FL-1218 (N1218H), FL-1228 (N1228C), and FL-1233 (N1233K). The first aircraft, N1218H, was delivered on National Aviation Day in Canada, 23 February 2024. CANSOFCOM revealed the aircraft have been given the designation CE-145C according to the Canadian Military Type Designation System. The chosen name for the aircraft is Vigilance.

It is as yet unknown which unit will operate the CE-145C Vigilance, they are however operated by and for CANSOFCOM. The first aircraft has been delivered to Trenton (Ont.).

Swansong for Canadian Hawks

The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) prepares to transition its frontline fighter from the CF-18 Hornet to the F-35A Lightning II.

One of the first steps in this transition is implementing an interim training programme that sees future Canadian fighter pilots receive their initial fighter training through the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) programme at Sheppard AFB (TX), and other Fighter Lead-in Training (FLIT) programmes in Finland and Italy.

At the same time, the RCAF contract with CAE Inc. for training on the CT-155 Hawk, which has served the RCAF for 24 years, is coming to an end. During the interim training programme, 419 squadron will stand down to be reactivated in the future with a new 5th generation trainer aircraft as part of a Future Fighter Lead-in Training programme.

The CT-155 Hawks will move to the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering at CFB Borden (Ont.), where they will support the training of RCAF aircraft technicians.

Canada is no stranger to ENJJPT, having been part of the programme since it was founded in 1981. The aim of the programme, at the time, was to provide common training of NATO pilots. The programme, managed by the USAF’s 80th Fighter Training Wing, has seen the RCAF post approximately five pilot instructors at Sheppard AFB, while five to six students train on T-38C Talons as part of their Fighter Lead-in Training before joining 410 Operational Fighter Training Squadron in 4 Wing, Cold Lake and transition to the CF-18.

Canada will now be sending up to seven Canadian students each year to ENJJPT, when the NATO Flying Training in Canada will come to an end. CT-155 Hawk aircraft training at 15 Wing Moose Jaw, Sask. ceased already in Summer 2023 and will now end entirely on 8 March 2024 when 419 squadron will stand down.
