Thailand May Become First Country To Acquire The Supersonic Cruise Missile

Indian Navy ship fires its Brahmos (Force India)

Thailand is currently in talks with India over importing BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, The Hindu has reported. If the sale materialises, it will be the first export of the BrahMos missile by India.

While Thailand has held a keen interest in the missiles for some time now, the discussions between the two nations picked up pace in December 2018 following the visit of Thai Navy Chief Admiral Ruddit. The talks are expected to come to fruition next year.

Previously a few other countries had expressed their interest in the BrahMos missile but concrete orders are yet to materialise.

Besides potentially ordering the BrahMos missile, Thailand is seeking India’s help in repair and refurbishment of its Dornier patrol aircraft. Thailand which also seeks to acquire more naval ships has been offered assistance by the Indian Navy in ship design and help in constructing the same at various shipyards in India.

•The Royal Thai Navy has launched its second Krabi-class offshore patrol vessel
•The vessel will strengthen the service's maritime border control and marine resources protection capabilities

The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has held a ceremonial launch ceremony for its second Krabi-class missile-capable offshore patrol vessel (OPV).

The ship, which will be in service as HTMS Prachuap Khiri Khan (552) once commissioned, underwent its ceremonial launch at the RTN's Mahidol Adulyadej Naval Dockyard in Sattahip, Chonburi, on 2 August, the RTN announced on its official website on the same day.

The OPV is the second vessel of its class. Its sister ship, HTMS Krabi (551), was commissioned into service in August 2013. Both vessels are based on the UK Royal Navy's River-class OPVs, which entered service between 2003 and 2007.

Like Krabi , Prachuap Khiri Khan was built by state-owned Bangkok Dock under a technology-transfer agreement signed with BAE Systems. It was laid down in June 2017 and first took to the water in late August 2018.

The vessel has an overall length of 90.5 m, an overall beam of 13.5 m, and a draught of 3.5 m. It has a top speed of 25 kt and a range of 3,500 n miles at 15 kt.

The OPV will be fitted with a combat, navigation, and communication suite provided by Thales and will be capable of launching Boeing's Harpoon surface-to-surface guided-missiles via four (two twin) launchers mounted diagonally amidships

Thailand to Acquire 120 U.S. Armoured Vehicles

28 Agustus 2019

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand’s military plans to acquire 120 American-made armoured vehicles by 2020, with the first batch of 10 arriving next month, a Thai defence ministry source told Reuters on Wednesday.

The United States curbed military aid to Thailand following a 2014 army coup, but ties are improving after disputed elections this year that officially restored civilian rule under a government led by former junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha.

Army chief General Apirat Kongsompong told reporters that Thailand would receive 70 U.S. made armoured infantry carrier vehicles by the end of the year and 50 more next year, but did not give the value of the deal.

“The first delivery will consist of 10 vehicles and by the end of the year there will be 70 vehicles,” Apirat said.

“There will be 50 vehicle in the next lot.”

He said the armoured vehicles would be deployed at a base in Chachoengsao, south of the capital of Bangkok.

U.S. embassy officials were not immediately available to comment on the army chief’s remarks.

A defence ministry source told Reuters that Thailand paid for 47 vehicles and the U.S. would supply 23 free in this year’s purchase, while 50 more will be bought next year. The U.S. will also help the Thai army in the maintenance of the vehicles.

The source declined to be identified because he was not authorised to speak to the media.

In July, the U.S. State Department said it had approved a government-to-government Foreign Military Sales deal for 60 Stryker armoured vehicles and equipment, at an estimated cost of $175 million.

Under junta rule, Thailand bought tanks and infantry fighting vehicles from China to replace old U.S. models, as well as planning to set up a joint centre with China to produce and maintain military gear, as relations cooled between Washington and its oldest ally in Southeast Asia after the 2014 coup.

The United States remains an important ally for Thailand.

Next week, Thailand will host the opening of the first-ever maritime drill between the navies of the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the 11th Indo-Pacific army chief conference on Sept 9.

Thailand Become First Export Country for Type 071E LPD

11 September 2019

Signing ceremony for the construction agreement of the Type 071E Landing Platform Dock ship for Thailand (photo : Sohu)

According to reports, on September 9, the signing ceremony for the construction of the China Navy Shipyard landing ship for the construction of the China Navy Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd. was held in Beijing.

The report said that this is China's first export of 20,000-ton shipyard landing ship, and it is another major achievement of comprehensive strategic cooperation between China and Thailand. It is of great significance for further deepening China-Thailand military-to-military, trade cooperation and promoting regional peace and stability.

Armée Thailandaise/Royal Thai Armed Forces - Page 18 _12c1140
Type 071E LPD is export version of Type 071 Yuzhao (photo : NavalNews)

With the construction and service of the 071E Landing Platform Dock, the ship will become the largest combat ship of the Royal Thai Navy. Even the carrier HTMS Chakri Naruebet CVH-911 of the 11,000-ton displacement of the Thai Navy can only be on the side of the carrier. Called the younger brother!

When Thailand purchased the S-26T conventional diesel-powered submarine from China, it had decided to purchase another dock landing ship from China. At that time, it planned to spend 4 billion baht (about 130 million US dollars). It seems that the news has finally been realized now.

Thailand to modernise ageing F-5 and Alpha Jet fleets

Gareth Jennings, Berlin - Jane's Defence Weekly

14 November 2019

The Royal Thai Air Force is to upgrade its fleets of Northrop F-5 and Dornier Alpha Jet aircraft under plans announced by an official on 14 November.

Speaking under the Chatham House Rule, the official said that the F-5s that were first received in 1980 will be modernised with updated avionics and a structural upgrade to give them another 15 years of operational service. The Alpha Jets, 16 of which were received second-hand from Germany in 2000, will receive new avionics only.

As the official explained the F-5 effort will include a radar “that can see beyond 40 miles” and a beyond visual-range missile.

Thailand Unveils BTR-3CS Command Vehicle

19 November 2019

DTI's BTR-3CS (photo : GBP)

Thailand's Defence Technology Institute (DTI) - a military research, development and industrial agency under the Thai Ministry of Defence (MoD) - unveiled a prototype of a new command version of the BTR-3 8×8 armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) at the opening day of the Defense and Security (D&S) 2019 show in Bangkok on 18 November.

The vehicle is designated BTR-3CS - also known as ACPC-01 (Armoured Command Post Carrier) - and was built through a collaborative programme funded by the DTI and incorporating Ukrainian state-owned defence industrial group UkrOboronProm and local firm Datagate, which assembled the prototype at its facilities in Chachoengsao, south-central Thailand.

DTI officials told Jane's that the BTR-3CS will start trials with the Royal Thai Army (RTA) soon before an anticipated programme to start building the vehicle in Thailand. Officials said the RTA has a total requirement for more than 60 vehicles across several battalions. The DTI will also pursue exports of the vehicle in regional markets.

"The aim is to start supplying these vehicles for the RTA and once those requirements are satisfied, we will try to win export contracts," said Col Chatchapong Punpayak, business development director at DTI.

He explained that the prototype vehicle was constructed through transfers of technologies from Ukraine to Thailand. The vehicle's Deutz AG engine and Allison transmission were also imported as were some of the on-board mission systems. However, Col Chatchapong said that many of the vehicle's components were sourced locally and that Thai industry will look to maximise its involvement in the programme as it matures over the coming few years.
