Phoenix Express 2010 Gets Underway
By Petty Officer 2nd Class Electa Berass, Phoenix Express 2010 Public Affairs
USS GUNSTON HALL, At Sea – The second phase of exercise Phoenix Express 2010 began after the successful completion of the in port segment of the exercise in Souda Bay, Greece, on May 24.
Participants from 17 countries are taking part in both phases of PE10, including Algeria, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Senegal, Spain, Turkey and the United States.
"The in port portion was the training phase, where we have a chance to hone our skills and began aligning ourselves as a team" said Lt. William Phillips, the 6th Fleet assessment analyst for PE10. "The at sea portion is the execution part – where we get a chance to utilize our skills to use in controlled operational environment."
Maritime Interdiction Operations will be a large focus of the exercise while underway. Forces from the different countries will also conduct drills for search and rescue, medical training, Maritime Domain Awareness and Automatic Identification System. Participants will also enhance their techniques, tactics and procedures during Visit Board Search and Seizure drills.
A combined effort from the coalition of maritime forces will enable members to work together on various exercises designed to enhance security in the region. These exercises allow foreign militaries the opportunity to become more acclimated in conducting boardings on their own more efficiently.

Gunston Hall Sailor Ensures Success for Phoenix Express
USS GUNSTON HALL, At Sea (NNS) -- A division officer for USS Gunston Hall's (LSD 44) Machinery division played a key role in the success of Phoenix Express 2010 (PE10) as a liaison and trainer to three countries while in the Mediterranean Sea May 26.
Ensign Brendan Hamm was selected to support and coordinate the maritime interdiction operations (MIO) teams aboard Gunston Hall.
His task was to keep in close contact with the maritime training team leaders from Morocco, Tunisia and Senegal and to keep the lines of communication open.
"I've been organizing the boarding teams with the foreign officer," said Hamm. "I've been acting as a liaison officer going back and forth between those involved to make sure everyone is up to speed."
One part of Hamm's mission was to spend time with each team before the start of operations. He also spent time with the team leader during the exercise monitoring the team's progress from the bridge of the Gunston Hall.
MIO teams practiced their visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) skills, and Hamm ensured that the three teams were provided with the correct supplies to perform VBSS operations. He coordinated providing tactical gear and organized the use of small boats with deck department.
"He's very good at it," said Lt. Kathryn Wijnaldum, Gunston Hall's first lieutenant. "He was pulled off the watch bill at the last minute and has been doing a fabulous job."
Hamm organized numerous drills daily for the MIO teams.
"Everyone did a really good job on such short notice," said Hamm. "I feel like we made an accomplishment."
All of the countries worked together to make the training a success.
"Everybody is getting along and learning from each other," said Hamm. "Any time you get this many countries working together, it's progress."
The implementation of the training while underway was based on the lessons learned in port at Souda Bay, Greece.
"I had a good time in port on the training ship preparing for what we're doing out here now," said Hamm.
The phases in port and at sea make up the whole PE10 exercises, which is a two-week long exercise designed to strengthen partnerships and enhance maritime security in the Mediterranean Sea among partners from Africa, Europe and the United States.
