- Sweden's armed forces successfully complete validation testing of ITT's coastal surveillance radar
CLIFTON, N.J. | ITT Corporation (NYSE:ITT) announced the completion of successful factory acceptance testing on its coastal surveillance radar system upgrade for the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV).
"This successful milestone culminates more than three years of development work to upgrade Sweden's coastal surveillance radar systems," said Bill Devlin, vice president of ITT's radar, reconnaissance and acoustic sensors business area. "ITT will move forward with full rate production to provide Sweden's defense forces with greatly improved capabilities to protect their coastal borders."
The Reliability and Modification (REMO) 870 upgrade program is based on ITT's new LCR-2020 integrated coastal surveillance radar system. With this adaptation of radar technology, ITT now offers customers an end-to-end radar, command, control and communications solution. Using this system, which increases awareness through an integrated network of radars, the customer can detect and intercept intruders more effectively, even in the harshest coastal marine environments.
The production of the radar system will be completed at ITT's electronic systems business in Van Nuys, Calif.

- Swedish battle boats start trials in the Netherlands and UK
In future international operations, Swedish fighter crafts may be used. But then it must be possible to load and unload the boats on larger ships for further transport. Two Swedish fighter craft is now being tested in the Netherlands and in UK.
FMV has allowed the Swedish Docksta shipyard to rebuild two battle ships of the CB90 model. The boats have been upgraded so that they can be lifted with existing davits on the Dutch and British ships. Sweden lends two boats for six months trials in the Netherlands and Great Britain.
“The trials aim to verify that the boats can be winched on board the larger ships, "said Kristofer Gattberg, Project Manager at FMV. Meanwhile, the two countries have the opportunity to look closely at the Swedish fighter boats.
Future challenges at sea, and in coastal areas such as disasters, threats from pirates and terrorists requires cooperation between countries. The Swedish Armed Forces Amphibious regiment already has a good cooperation with their colleagues in the Netherlands and Great Britain. The Swedish fighter boats have attracted considerable interest in both countries.
Booth the Dutch and the British navy want to be able to operate in coastal areas and they need to supplement their landing craft with some kind of battleship. There is also the requirement that boats easily can be taken on board the larger vessel to be moved over longer distances associated with international operations.
“Within the FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces this project is about learning for the future. The redevelopment of the CB90 significantly will expand the use of the boat. The boats can easily be loaded and unloaded and be used anywhere in the world, "said Kristofer Gattberg.
In the autumn Swedish, Dutch and British Amphibious squadrons will practice together.

- New MBT122B Evolution with Unprecedented Protection
The Swedish MBT122 has already been recognized as one of the best protected main battle tanks in the world.
In a recent study program of the tank for the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) in Sweden, IBD Deisenroth Engineering succeeded in the development of a further improved protection dedicated to the tank. The concept is thereby designed to protect against the actual and future threats in theatre, especially in asymmetric and urban warfare.
IBD's focus in this development was the optimization of the protection against the actual threats in theatre: new variants of RPGs, IEDs and EFPs as well as keeping high protection against “conventional threats”. A new light weight and highly efficient SLAT armour was designed as an amendment of the protection concept. The effectiveness of the new solutions has been verified against all threats in a broad test campaign. Thanks to all these efforts the concept provides an outstanding 360 degree protection of the crew.
The completely modular design of the concept allows the use of any mixture of old and new protection modules. This solution is of great advantage in theatre with regard to maintenance and repairs.
Despite the improved overall protection level of the MBT 122B Evolution the weight increase of about 350 kg is only minimal such maintaining the high mobility of the tank. Also the width of the vehicle could be kept to exactly 4.0 m which is also an important factor for the use in urban environment.

Swedish Gripen fighters on Libya standby
The Swedish military said Monday that they would be ready to deploy Jas Gripen fighter aircraft within ten days, should Sweden be asked to participate in the military action against Libya. “The armed forces have informed the government that we are able to deploy six to eight aircraft. At the moment they are on a ten day standby, so it wouldn’t take longer than that,” Therese Fagerstedt of the Swedish Armed Forces information department told news agency TT.
Where the aircraft would be stationed and how much ground crew would be needed is yet to be determined.
How long it would actually take for the unit to be deployed depends on the political decision making process.
Sources with insight into NATO have revealed to the Swedish Dagens Nyheter daily that Sweden will be asked to lend their support by Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest.
The Liberal Party (Folkpartiet) and the Christian Democrats have criticised the stance of the foreign minister Carl Bildt and the government, who have opted to wait for the request rather than offer Swedish help.
Allan Widman of the Liberal Party would like the government to make available the ‘Expeditionary Air Wings’, an eight plane strong flying unit, which is part of the Nordic Battle Group.
“I think we need to send the message that we can and wish to participate,” he told DN.
The foreign minister Carl Bildt does not however share the view of his government coalition colleague.
In a radio interview on Sunday, Bildt said that Sweden should wait to offer military assistance until requested.
However, if NATO was to approach Sweden, Bildt did not rule out possible military participation.
“All alternatives are still on the table. In the case of a request we will look at all the different ways that Sweden can contribute,” he said.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Stefan Ring, an expert on military strategy from the Swedish National Defense College (Försvarshögskolan), there is a need of further air power in the Libya operations.
“France have deployed about a hundred planes, which may sound like a lot. But compared to the air attacks on Kosovo and Serbia there are very few aircraft in action. Back then there were 700-800 aircraft per day,” he told TT.
On Monday Carl Bildt heads to Brussels to meet with foreign ministers from other EU member states.
On his personal blog "Alla Dessa Dagar" (literally: All These Days) he wrote on Sunday that the situation in Libya is certain to be high on the agenda.
“Sweden will support the resolution in the way and with the resources that we are best suited to,“ Bildt wrote.
At the moment, he pointed out, the military action is the main focus, but there is more to the resolution than that and a role for Sweden in the operations is by no means certain. thelocal | |
