Air Force pilot killed in jet crash: report
MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - A Philippine Air Force trainer plane crashed near a beach in Bagac town in Bataan province on Thursday afternoon, killing at least one pilot, a military official said.
Northern Luzon Command chief Lt. Gen. Gaudencio Pangilinan said the Aermacchi S-211 trainer jet crashed at 3:15 p.m. in Banawang village near the Stela Mariz Beach resort. Citing sketchy information, Pangilinan said the aircraft was piloted by Maj. Ephraim Gatus Suyom and one de Leon. "(The) aircraft disintegrated upon impact…One confirmed dead, identification still for confirmation," said Pangilinan. Air Force spokesperson Miguel Okol told ANC's Top Story that they have yet to confirm the fatality. He said the airplane, which took off from Clark Field in Pampanga around 2:45 p.m., was on a routine proficiency flight. Pangilinan said elements of the Army's 24th Infantry Battalion are now on site, security the crash site. Col. Gregorio Catapang, commander of the Army's 703rd Brigade, said the plane was totally wrecked. "They (Army troops) are securing the area. They are retrieving the dead…The retrieval operations are ongoing," he said, adding initial reports showed that one body was already recovered at site but they are not in the position to identify him. "The aircraft disintegrated," Catapang said. In July last year, an S-211 plane crashed in Concepcion town in Tarlac while in a training exercise. The 2 pilots were unharmed as they were able to eject from the plane abs-cbnnews

PAF studying phaseout of ‘deadly’ training jets
05/02/2011 | 02:37 PM
The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is studying the possibility of removing its S-211 trainer jets from its inventory following last week’s crash of a similar type of aircraft in Bataan province, killing the jet’s two pilots.
“They are studying that, that’s why they’ve grounded all [S-211s]. The Air Force is conducting that (study) itself," said Armed Forces spokesman Commodore Miguel Jose Rodriguez at a press briefing in Camp Aguinaldo on Monday.
An S-211 jet was on a proficiency training flight last Thursday when it crashed at the waters of Bagac town, resulting in the deaths of Maj. Ephraim Soyum, the valedictorian of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) class of 1997, and Capt. Raymond de Leon.
Last week’s accident was the second crash involving S-211 planes in less than a year. Last July, an S-211 aircraft also crashed in Concepcion town in Tarlac while also on a training flight. The two pilots were able to eject from the plane before it hit the ground.
Last week’s accident prompted the Air Force leadership to ground the two remaining operational S-211 trainer planes pending a thorough investigation on the crash. The Air Force has three other S-211s but they are under maintenance.
Apart from attending to the training needs of Air Force pilots, S-211s are also used to provide firepower to troops on the ground and also used in the conduct of security patrol operations.
Told that S-211s may be too valuable to be phased out, Rodriguez said, “All aircraft have their value, depending on their use but basically our S-211s are okay. But there are other aircraft that we can also use."
Rodriguez said the Air Force would be making recommendations to the AFP Weapons Modernization Board regarding what type of aircraft should be procured under their modernization program in the event that S-211s are phased out.
“They are studying that (phase out of the S-211s), what are the risks. If they think that the risk is high, then we have to think of something," said Rodriguez

AFP to acquire 2 more modern seacraft from US
THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is seriously considering the acquisition of two more modern large Hamilton-class patrol crafts to shore up its naval defense capabilities and aptly defend the country’s 200-mile exclusive zone from foreign intruders, particularly in the disputed Spratly group of islands in the South China Sea. The AFP spokesman, Commodore Juan Miguel Rodriguez, disclosed yesterday that the plan had already been discussed by top military officials even as formal communications have yet to be made to the President and as well as to the US government, which is offering the Hamiltons to the world market. “I’m sure that it has already been discussed. The United States is offering the Hamiltons there in the world market,” Rodriguez said. As far as Malacanang is concerned, Rodriguez expressed confidence that the President would give his support to the plan of the AFP. He added that while the AFP has to compete with other interested bidders, the Philippines would most likely get it has already acquired the first Hamilton that the US Navy has put on sale. “There is a bigger chance that they would be given to us,” Rodriguez said. Maintenance wise, Rodriguez explained that it become much stronger and economical when the Navy have two or three of them. “Because if you have different ships you have logistical nightmare in terms of supplies, etcetera. So the commonality of spares will dictate by pure logic that if you did three or four ships, it’s best if you hav the same types,” he added. Rodriguez also pointed out that the Philippine-US relations would also be a factor in the acquisition of additional Hamiltons, saying that “as mutual defense treaty partners, I would believe that hey would give a preference to their treaty partners.” The first Hamilton has already been turned over by the US Coast Guard to the Philippine representatives in simple ceremonies held at Coast Guard Island, Alameda, California last May 13 and would be due for arrival on August. A step towards the Vessel’s commissioning here in the country, the official name of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton was changed Friday to “Ex-Hamilton” with Philippine Ambassador to the Transfer cost was pegged at P450M, while operational cost for two years is estimated at P120 million. Funding will come from the Department of Energy (DOE) considering that the vessel is projected to be employed for the security of oil platforms and oil explorations activities in Palawan and Sulu Sea. The Filipino crew of the first Hamilton has by far been on training since February this year in the U.S which will last until June 30 prior to installation of a Coast Watch System equipment in July. “We will continue to modernize your Armed Forces. The addition of the vessel to the Navy’s inventory will definitely boost our capability to protect our Exclusive Economic Zone and improve our border patrol capability”, AFP chief of staff Gen. Eduardo SL Oban Jr. said.

Philippines to receive eight Sokols, looks to upgrade MD 520s
AgustaWestland subsidiary PZL Swidnik will deliver four W-3A Sokol transport helicopters to the Philippines by November this year, with another four in the second quarter of 2012.
The eight aircraft were purchased under a Ps2.8 billion ($64.4 million) deal. The Philippine air force says the Sokols will be used in the combat utility role, working closely with the nation's fleet of Bell UH-1 Hueys.
The Sokols will be tied in with the UH-1s and will "probably take over some of their roles", said the air force.
PZL Swidnik says the W-3A is a 6t twin-engined helicopter capable of carrying up to two pilots and 12 passengers.
The air force is also contemplating major avionics upgrades to its MD 520 light attack helicopters. It is particularly interested in configuring the MD 520s for night operations. It also plans to review a broad range of key systems including the helicopters' engines.
The Sokol purchase is significant as it represents the Philippines' first purchase of non-US helicopters. The Philippines has flown the Huey since the 1970s, and its air force has an active fleet of more than 80 UH-1H/Vs.
Earlier this year, the Philippine air force received five used UH-1s under a deal facilitated by the US Army Security Assistance Command.

PAF expects to get P14-B to buy aircraft, radars in next 5 years
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Air Force (PAF) expects to get P14 billion or over a third of the P40-billion special funding promised by President Aquino in the next five years to boost its capability to protect the country’s skies and its claims in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea). Beginning next year, the PAF will receive air defense radars and aircraft capable of long-range patrol so it could finally monitor, if not yet intercept, incursions in Philippine airspace and territorial waters, Lt. Gen. Oscar Rabena said in an interview on Friday. “It will improve our capability very much because it will give us a greater domain awareness in what is happening in our territorial waters and in our territorial airspace,” said Rabena, the PAF commanding general. From being the best in the Southeast Asia region after World War II until the 1960s, the PAF saw its fleet steadily depleted with hardly new air assets bought despite the 15-year modernization program for the Armed Forces of the Philippines that ended in 2010. The decommissioning of its last fighter jet in 2005 left the PAF incapable of intercepting any foreign aircraft illegally entering the country’s airspace. Amid renewed incursions by China into the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone in the West Philippine Sea, Malacañang announced that it would allocate P8 billion a year for the next five years for a total of P40 billion to boost the military’s capability to protect the country’s maritime resources and territorial integrity. This is apart from the P11-billion special outlay that the President had allocated for the military this year from the government’s share in revenues of the Malampaya natural gas project in Palawan (P8 billion) and the regular modernization outlay (P3 billion). The P8-billion special allocation starting next year is higher than the P5-billion annual special outlay for the AFP’s modernization since 2006. Interviewed at the Air Power Symposium on Friday, Rabena said the PAF would acquire a long-range patrol aircraft and two search-and-rescue helicopters from its share in the P11-billion outlay. The PAF, which would mark its 64th anniversary on July 1, already put in place a program of acquisition in the next five years that would take up P14 billion of the P40 billion outlay, Rabena said. This includes air defense surveillance radars, surface attack aircraft, close air support aircraft, combat utility helicopters and long-range patrol aircraft, he said. Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. also said at the symposium that the Aquino administration was committed to reforming the Armed Forces and bringing in adequate operational support for the troops. “We all want the best for our country and want to help our people weather whatever storms that come their way. Today we have a Commander in Chief who is committed to providing you the support you need to allow you to perform your duties to the best of your abilities,” Ochoa said. The reforms have been outlined in Mr. Aquino’s 16-point agenda, he said. These included a legislation extending the AFP modernization to 2025; a proposal authorizing the defense department to forge contracts of sale, lease and joint venture of real property; and appropriation of P4.2 billion to build 20,000 houses for low-salaried soldiers and policemen, among others. newsinfo.inquirer

Navy set to launch first locally made vessel
Tuesday, 16 August 2011 20:31 Rene Acosta / Reporter
THE military will soon launch the first and biggest Filipino-built vessel to be included in its Navy’s fleet.
The vessel will be launched in three months.
The vessel, which is being developed under the modernization program of the Armed Forces, is already undergoing finishing touches in a secured shipyard in the south.
“It is a cargo-logistics vessel with beachhead landing capabilities. It can carry heavy loads of both logistics and personnel at the same time. It is highly ideal to our archipelagic country,” a military official said.
The ship will undergo sea trials before it will be officially deployed in November.
A source at the Armed Forces General Headquarters in Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City, said the logistics vessel was designed and is being manufactured 100 percent by Filipino shipbuilders.
The official, however, refused to give more information about the vessel, except that when deployed, it will be the Navy’s biggest landing craft utility.
“This will be the first time that the country will have a Filipino-made Navy vessel,” he said.
The ship will have its own armaments, monitoring, surveillance, navigation and communication equipment.

PAF 'ill-equipped' to defend national airspace
The Philippine Air Force (PAF) aircraft are in dire straits with more than three-quarters of the jets being unfit to fly, PAF spokesman Miguel Ernesto Okol has said.
The PAF is dependent on aging OV-10 jets to patrol the country's airspace and territorial waters, including disputed South China Sea areas claimed by several other countries.
The PAF operates 393 aircraft of which only 91 are 'fully mission capable', while the last fighter planes were decommissioned in 2005.
The PAF operates only one C-5 military transport aircraft for its 17,000 members, while two more are scheduled for procurement later this year or next year.
Agence France-Presse also quoted the Commission on Audit (COA) report as saying, "Considering this abject state of its air assets, which are mostly aging, the Philippine Air Force is ill equipped to be operationally responsive to national security."

3 killed in Philippine military helicopter crash
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine military says three air force personnel were killed when a helicopter carrying supplies to troops fighting militants on a southern island crashed after its engine failed.
Regional military spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang says the Vietnam War-vintage UH-1H Huey helicopter lost engine power as it approached a military camp in Patikul township on Jolo island Saturday. The helicopter hit the ground hard and rolled down a hill.
Three crew members were killed and the fourth was injured.
The Huey is the Philippine air force's workhorse and is used extensively in troop deployment, resupply and disaster operations.
The troops are battling the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf group, which is on Washington's terrorist list.

Philippine Navy Chief Eyes 2nd US Warship
19 Oktober 2011
USCG's Hamilton class (photo : Militaryphotos)
WASHINGTON D.C.--The Philippine Navy will likely get its second Hamilton-class cutter next year, boosting its capability to patrol the country’s maritime borders even as it races to finally acquire missiles for its ships.
But Vice Adm. Alexander Pama, Navy Flag Officer-in-Command (FOIC), said the bigger challenge is not in getting the new weapons the Philippine Navy needs but in improving its “absorptive capacity” to operate and maintain them.
“We have to consider everything,” he told ABS-CBN News. “Buying equipment is the easiest thing to do. The more difficult part is the capability of people because for so long we were concentrated on helping in the counter-insurgency effort. Now we’re shifting to external defense and a conventional navy. That needs a re-adjustment of the skills of our people and that doesn’t happen overnight.”
Meanwhile, the Navy chief downplayed the “freak” collision of a Philippine patrol ship with a Chinese fishing fleet “mother ship” near Recto Bank earlier this week. The patrol ship, reportedly the World War II-vintage BRP Rizal, was trying to take a closer look at the Chinese vessel when it experienced a problem with its rudder, Pama explained.
“It was an accident,” he stressed, adding that the BRP Rizal was investigating reports of poachers in the area. Recto Bank lies about 80 miles northwest of Palawan and is well within the country’s economic zone.
Pama was on his way to the biennial Sea Power Symposium in Newport, Rhode Island where he will address about 70 chiefs of navies from all over the world on “maritime terrorism”. The event is organized by the US Navy.
He stopped briefly in Washington DC to brief think tank groups on the state of the Philippine Navy and naval challenges in the South China Sea.
At the Sea Power Symposium, Pama said he will be sharing the Philippine Navy’s “best practices” in combating terrorism at sea. “They can see that we’re doing something right there and it’s something we can share with the other navies,” he said.
As former commander of Task Force Stingray, an elite naval force created following the string of Abu Sayyaf attacks on beach resorts, he stressed the need to pre-empt terrorists while they’re still on land.
“You don’t address the event itself because by that time it would be too late. Maritime terrorism starts on land,” he said, adding that since Task Force Stingray was established the Abu Sayyaf was never able to replicate the kind of raids it launched on Sipadan Island or the Dos Palmas resort.
But as the Philippine Navy’s focus turn increasingly on the Spratly Islands and the country’s need to tap its vast resources, Pama stressed that "no matter what and no matter with what, we will carry out our mandate even if all we can do is spit on them.”
Pama said they are laying down plans to upgrade the Philippine Navy’s capabilities all the way to the end President Aquino’s term. “The President said he can not commit for the next administration so we’re concentrating on the ‘doables’ and on what the economy can support,” he explained.
Rear Admiral Orwen Cortez, Philippine Navy vice commander, is scheduled to visit the US in early November to inspect another Hamilton-class all-weather high-endurance cutter (WHEC) that could be retired and turned over to the Philippines next year.
A first Hamilton-class cutter was turned over earlier this year and is now deployed with forces patrolling western Palawan.
The third Hamilton-class cutter is projected to be acquired by the Philippine Navy in 2013.
Pama also revealed that they are now preparing to acquire some missile technology. The Philippine military is the only one in Southeast Asia that still does not have missiles. “It’s in the drawing board. I can’t say when but if things turn out as planned, it will be more sooner than later,” he told ABS-CBN News.
Despite recent irritants over the Spratlys dispute, Pama said he was convinced that competing countries were committed to a peaceful resolution of their overlapping claims. “I wouldn’t say it’s getting more dangerous; there are just issues and challenges confronting everybody. I can say the neighborhood has states that are responsible enough. No nation, at least within ASEAN, is out there to make trouble.”

- Air Force plane crashes in Zambo; 2 pilots slightly injured
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – A Philippine Air Force (PAF) bomber plane crashed yesterday inside the air force base in this city after coming from a test flight, according to a military official.
Maj. Romel Miguel, public affairs officer of the 3rd Air Division here, said the two test pilots of the ill-fated OV-10 bronco bomber plane survived by bailing out seconds before the crash.
The two pilots, Maj. David Trajano and Lt. Adonis Buscas, suffered slight injuries and were declared safe.
Miguel said the OV-10 plane, which was being used in the “all-out justice” operations of the military against lawless elements, crashed about 9:50 a.m. near the hangar inside the airbase.
Miguel said the bomber plane was on a routine test flight mission when its right engine conked out and failed to restart prompting the pilots to return for an emergency landing.
“The two pilots successfully ejected and luckily were safe,” Miguel said, adding that the ill-fated bomber plane was not armed with bombs since it was only on a test flight.
Witnesses on the ground said they saw the plane swerve on both sides as it approached the airstrip of runway 27 to land.
“The plane was coming in like swerving and God, its propeller on the right side was not functioning. Then suddenly we saw the pilots on parachutes barely made it seconds before a loud explosion occurred,” said traffic police officer SPO1 Ignacio Lozano Jr., who was manning the traffic flow at the crossing of Governor Camins and Sta. Maria road near the air base.
Another witness, traffic aid Ernesto Ramos, said the sudden gust of wind might have also affected the emergency landing.
The plane was totally wrecked but did not bring damage to the nearby building structures where it crashed.
Miguel said Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Oscar Rabena immediately directed the 3rd Air Division to conduct the investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
The order also came with the grounding of the rest of the OV-10 bomber planes in the country.
The 3rd Air Division has been using at least 6 OV-10 bomber planes in support of the Western Mindanao Command’s (Westmincom) recent operations in Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Sulu air strikes.
The military said the grounding of the bomber planes might temporarily affect their operations if air support will be needed.– Jaime Laude philstar

PAF to get 4 brand-new fighter copters this month |
MANILA, Philippines - The first four of the eight brand new combat utility helicopters purchased by the Philippine Air Force (PAF) from Poland are expected to be delivered this month.
Gen. Eduardo Oban Jr., Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff, confirmed to the delivery of the Polish-made Swienik helicopters but did not say the exact date.
The PAF ordered the helicopters from Poland’s PZL Swidnik after the Polish company won the public bidding in 2008. PZL Swidnik is Poland’s biggest manufacturer of helicopters.
The P3-billion order is part of the modernization program of the AFP that involves the acquisition of eight combat utility helicopters and their integrated logistics support package.
The Swidnik utility helicopters can operate in any combat environment and provide organic general support for internal security operations, counter-terrorism, and territorial defense.
The acquisition of the helicopters will boost the firepower of the Air Force in its counter-insurgency operations and in the all-out war on terror, particularly the Abu Sayyaf Group and some elements of the Jemaah Islamiyah which have links to the al-Qaeda terror group.
The acquisition of these helicopters is timely because the Air Force badly needs them to support government ground forces during combat operations. The PAF’s main utility helicopters are the ageing UH1-H “Huey” which were acquired from the United States four decades ago.
The Air Force has also the MG-520 helicopter gunships acquired more than 20 years ago.
The PAF’s helicopter fleet has been depleted over the years due to crashes and lack of spare parts.
Aside from the choppers, the PAF also needs new fighter jets after its F-5 jetfighters were retired in 2004 because of old age.
The Swidnik helicopter can carry 14 persons, including the pilot and co-pilot, and has a maximum speed of 260 kilometers per hour and a range of 745 kilometers non-stop.
The Polish-made helicopter is armed with a variety of weapons, air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground rockets, and .50 caliber machine guns. It is also equipped with radar and night vision devices.
It can climb to an altitude of 19,680 feet, more than twice that of the “Huey.” The delivery of the remaining four Swidnik choppers will be made next year. -- PNA philstar

The Navy has been cleared to begin negotiations for the purchase of a multirole vessel from any of the friendly nations, Rear Admiral Alexander Pama said on Sunday.
“The latest process that we had undergone with the Department of National Defense had good results and we did not encounter anymore objections,” Pama said.
“Hopefully, all the procedures required by the defense acquisition system would be finalized and early next year we can start negotiations for the acquisition,” Pama said.
But Pama said the Navy has yet to obtain President Aquino’s approval for the purchase plan, which is part of the military’s modernization.
An MRV, which costs at least P5 billion, will serve as a mother ship equipped with state-of-the-art radars and sensors for monitoring aircrafts and patrol boats, Pama said.
Early this year, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin temporarily dropped the acquisition of an MRV from the list of big-ticket items and gave priority to light sea-crafts for internal security operations and disaster response.
Gazmin changed his mind following China’s alleged intrusions into Philippine territorial waters particularly in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) where the hotly disputed Spratly islands is situated.
Last August, the Philippines acquired a patrol vessel—Hamilton-class cutter—from the United States Coast Guard for P423 million to beef up security at the Malampaya gas project. The Navy renamed it BRP Gregorio del Pilar.
“The dry-docking and repainting of PF15 costs P47.914 million while the refitting to our Navy configuration is P13.872 million. It was funded by the Department of Energy.”
On Dec. 14, the Navy with Aquino as the guest of honor will launch the commissioning of the vessel together with a Philippine-made Landing Utility Craft called BRP Tagbanua (AT296), a BO105 Helicopter (PNH422) and a refurbished Presidential Yacht called BRP Ang Pangulo (AT25). The P189 million- BRP Tagbanua, made in Misamis Oriental, is configured to transport combat personnel, tanks, vehicles, artillery equipment, and cargoes in support of military operations and perform medical assistance as well as disaster, rescue and relief operations.

- DND to acquire attack aircraft
MANILA, Philippines - The Department of National Defense (DND) is planning to acquire a squadron of surface attack aircraft in the next few years to beef up the military’s capability to secure the country’s airspace.
In its planning guidance for 2013 to 2018, DND said enhancing the country’s air assets would address the Philippines’ territorial defense concerns.
Documents obtained by The STAR showed that the DND also wants to acquire air surveillance radars and to develop the military’s air defense system.
“The Program 2 Resource Manager shall gradually develop the capability of air surveillance and interdiction by reactivating the Philippine Air Defense System (PADS) and acquiring air surveillance radars and one squadron of surface attack aircraft,” DND said, referring to military planners.
A squadron consists of 12 to 24 aircraft units. A surface attack aircraft is capable of interception and maritime patrols.
On the other hand, PADS is a system that identifies the air structure, network, infrastructure, radar or any asset needed to monitor intrusions in the airspace. The limited resources barred the military from maximizing the potential of PADS.

Philippines want to procure 12 F-16 fighter jets from the US
December 21, 2011 (by Lieven Dewitte) - The Philippines would like to procure a squadron of F-16 fighter jets from the U.S. Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said Wednesday. He and the country's defense chief will meet their U.S. counterparts in Washington next year to discuss the requests.
The Philippines has turned to the U.S., a defense treaty ally, for warships and planes to patrol South China Sea areas it claims.
Del Rosario said the requests for 12 F-16 fighter jets (and a third coast guard cutter) have already been relayed to American officials and their initial response was encouraging.
"We are getting good signals," Del Rosario told reporters. The Philippines wants to build "a minimum credible defense posture and the U.S. has expressed their willingness to help us," del Rosario said.
Washington offered to sell 26 F-16 fighter planes to the Philippines in January 1998. At that time, the Philippines were looking to acquire F-16s to bolster its claim over the Spratly Islands. Washington offered the F-16s which were originally purchased by Pakistan but then embargoed. However, due to the Asian currency crisis, the military expansion plan did not go ahead.
The Philippine military, one of Asia's weakest, only has about six aging S-211 jet trainers. Six years ago they retired there eight F-5 fighters. These 1960s era aircraft were not much of a match for more recent warplanes and were expensive to maintain.
Last month, the US and Indonesia announced the planned transfer and upgrade of two dozen US F-16s to the Indonesian air force. f-16.net

PNoy to buy PAF more C130 planes for relief goods transport
by Rutchie Cabahgu-Aguhob
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Occidental, Dec. 22 (PIA) -- Responding to the problem of food scarcity in Typhoon Sendong devastated areas of the vity, President Benigno S. Aquino III promised to buy at least two more units of the C130 Cargo plane for the Philippine Air Force (PAF), next year.
During his visit to assess the devastation brought by ‘Sendong’ in the city, the president said that there is only one C130 Cargo Plane in the PAF inventory that has been bringing relief items to flashflood victims. He added that it is currently down for maintenance.
“We have offers of assistance coming in from America, Russia, Japan and other countries and the Americans will, most probably, provide us with the necessary airlift capability to fast track what we need,” Aquino said.
We have two other C130 cargo planes in the pipeline but they’re not yet ready for events like this and will be available only, next year, he also said.
According to him, the funds to buy the planes are readily available.
“We have at least two (2) sources to tap, domestic and foreign: the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will be assisting us with a loan of US$3million grant and the World Bank (WB) facility that has also offered us,” the President added.
He said many Filipinos in the other parts of the country have responded to his call for help and the donated items only wait for the availability to transport them, where they are needed.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has reported to the president that PAF has airlifted some P21.53 million-worth of relief supplies from Dec. 18-20, as augmentation support to the on-going relief operations in Northern Mindanao.
These supplies included food and non-food items, such as, sacks of rice, boxes of instant noodles, canned goods, bottled drinking water, mats, blankets, mosquito nets, used clothing, medicines, cadaver bags and even coffins, among others.
On his orders as the Commander-n-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Aquino directed PAF’s Search and Rescue Squadrons (SRS) to help in the search, rescue, retrieval and recovery (SRRR) operations of the flashflood areas.
For this purpose, the 5053rd based in Davao City had established an advance command post (ACP) at the Tactical Operations Group, Northern Mindanao (TOG-10) Headquarters in Lumbia Airport, this city.
The team also deployed three UH-IH helicopters with tail numbers 517, 317 and 806 to do the SAR sorties in the flashflood-affected barangays of the city. Helping out in the SRRR Operations in the Negros and Iloilo is the 5052ndSRS, which is based Mactan, Cebu City. (PIA-10)

PAF to get 2 reconditioned C-130 planes By Jaime Laude (The Philippine Star) Updated January 12, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (31) | MANILA, Philippines - Two C-130 cargo planes will be added to the Philippine Air Force (PAF) inventory within the first quarter of this year.
At present, the PAF is mainly relying on a lone C-130 Hercules aircraft in hauling of supplies and logistics, as well as troops for internal and territorial defense.
“We have two C-130 cargo planes coming in by March and April,” said Armed Forces deputy chief of staff for plans and programs Brig. Gen. Roy Deveraturda.
The first C-130 would be flying in from the United States, while the other is now being refurbished at Clark Field.
Air Force spokesman Col. Miguel Okol said the two C-130 cargo planes will boost the Air Force capabilities in terms of troop deployment, logistic runs, and search and disaster operations.
“From one, we will soon have two more C-130 cargo planes,” he said.
“That’s really something that we are expecting.”
Okol could not say how much the [color:d657=blue !important][color:d657=blue !important]government spent for the two refurbished Hercules aircraft.
The Air Force is also expecting the arrival of eight brand-new utility and combat-attack helicopters during the first quarter of this year.
President Aquino’s visit to the United States this April is expected to finally seal a deal for the acquisition of F-16 fighter jets.
Earlier, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario said the country intends to acquire a squadron F-16 fighter jet from the US. philstar

PAF to get first delivery of 4 of 8 brand-new combat utility helicopters bought from Poland next month
MANILA — The Philippine Air Force (PAF) will get the first delivery by the middle of next
month of four of eight brand-new combat utility helicopters it ordered from PZL Swidnik of Poland.
Lt. Col. Mike Okol, PAF spokesman, told the Philippines News Agency that the remaining four helicopters will be delivered in November, also this year.
PZL Swidnik is the biggest helicopter manufacturer in Poland. Its main products are the PZL W-3 Sokol and PZL WS-4 helicopters used by the Polish Air Force and other European countries.
The PAF bought the eight Polish-made helicopters at a contract price of P3 billion.
The arrival of four utility combat helicopters is part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ modernization program to boost the PAF’s air power, particularly supporting ground troops during combat operations.
The PAF has in its arsenal the reliable UH-1H “Huey” helicopters and the MD-520-MG gunships from the United States.
The Polish company won the bidding to supply the PAF eight brand-new combat utility choppers.
The funds for the purchase of the choppers were part of the AFP modernization budget in 2007.
Okol said the acquisition of these helicopters is timely because the Air Force badly needs helicopters of this type to support government ground forces during combat operations.
The Swidnik helicopter can carry 14 persons, including the pilot and co-pilot and has a maximum speed of 260 kilometers per hour and a range of 745 kilometers non-stop.
It can climb to an altitude of 19,680 feet, more than twice that of the “Huey.” The Polish-made choppers can be armed with a variety of weapons, air-to-ground rockets, air-to-air missiles, M-60 machine guns and 20-mm cannons. (PNA)
