Second batch of NAF A-29s on their way
On 17 September 2021, the second batch of six Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Sierra Nevada/Embraer A-29B Super Tucanos arrived at Keflavik (Iceland) for a stop over.
Due to severe weather conditions over Iceland, the aircraft's departure to Prestwick (UK) and further is delayed. The previous delivery transited Prestwick on 19 July 2021.
The A-29s have two different types of camouflage, desert and forest/jungle. The total fleet of twelve Super Tucanos is split in half for the camouflage pattern.
The first NAF Super Tucano took the skies for its inaugural flight on 16 April 2020. Pilots and maintenance crew were trained with the 81st Fighter Squadron Panthers at Moody AFB (GA). The A-29Bs were purchased through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme and includes spare parts for several years of operation, contract logistics support, munitions, and a multi-year construction project to improve Kainji Air Base infrastructure.
The following aircraft have arrived at Keflavik accompanied by support aircraft Dornier 328 D-CAAN.

A first batch of 6 aircraft already arrived in July and were officially inducted into Nigerian Air Force on August 31. This 6 new Tucano marks the end of deliveries. The six aircraft, flown by American pilots, were accompanied by a Dornier 328 support aircraft provided by manufacturer Sierra Nevada Corporation.
The Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano, also named ALX or A-29, is a Brazilian turboprop light attack aircraft designed and built by Embraer as a development of the Embraer EMB 312 Tucano. The A-29 Super Tucano carries a wide variety of weapons, including precision-guided munitions, and was designed to be a low-cost system operated in low-threat environments. In addition to its manufacture in Brazil, Embraer has set up a production line in the United States in conjunction with Sierra Nevada Corporation for the manufacture of A-29s to export customers.
Nigeria purchased the A-29s through the Foreign Military Sales program, which follows the Department of Defense’s “Total Package Approach” model and includes spare parts for several years of operation, contract logistics support, munitions, and a multi-year construction project to improve Kainji Air Base infrastructure. The total sale is valued at almost $500 million, making it the largest FMS program in sub-Saharan Africa.

Since the 2010s, China has delivered a large number of military equipment to Nigeria including 15 F-7M Airguard fighter aircraft, two P18N OPVs (Offshore Patrol Vessels), 120 AR-1 Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, 5 CH-3 drones, one type-62 patrol craft, 3 SH-2 122mm self-propelled howitzers, 2 SH-5 105mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers, 6 VT-4 main battle tank, 6 ZTL-09 8x8 105mm fire support vehicle, four CH-4 armed drones and 2 Wing Loong-2 armed drones.
According to the Ambassador of China to Nigeria, Mr Cui Jianchun, China would prioritize the implementation of its political and economic cooperation with Nigeria, to achieve growth. The two nations established diplomatic relations in February 1971, and today the two countries supported each other to continue a long way internationally.
Given Nigeria’s open and violent conflict in the Niger Delta region specifically, it is not surprising to see that China has been acknowledging the need to support more military and peacebuilding efforts in order to protect its investment and interests.
The Type 85 tracked APC (Armored personnel Carrier) was developed in the late 1960s by the State Defense Company NORINCO. The hull of the YW 531 is made of all-welded steel which provides ballistic protection against the firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters. The vehicle has a crew of three and the rear part of the hull is able to accommodate up to 13 infantrymen. The roof of the vehicle is fitted with an open-top turret armed with one 12.7 mm Type 54 machine gun.
The torsion bar suspension on either side consists of five single rubber-tired road wheels with the drive sprocket at the front and the idler at the rear. The vehicle is fully amphibious, being propelled in the water by its tracks at a maximum speed of 6 km/h.
The Type 85 is powered by a BF8L413F 4-cycle turbocharged, inter-cooled, V-8 diesel engine developing 320 hp at 2,500 rpm. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 66 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km.

Landing Ships have a history dating back to the Second World War. Being primarily intended for amphibious assaults many landing ships proved to be very versatile in peacetime fulfilling logistic transport and support tasks in remote areas worldwide. However, many vessels are not suited or designed for the tasks they are expected to carry out.
