Uganda is to receive eight refurbished Bell UH-1 'Huey' utility helicopters under the US government's Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme.
The procurement of the Huey II helicopters, which was revealed on the Federal Business Opportunities (FedBizOpps) website on 3 August, includes spares, tooling, and training for both pilots and maintainers. No details pertaining to contract values, aircraft configuration, or delivery timelines were disclosed.
The Huey II upgrade kit takes a standard UH-1 and equips it with a more powerful engine, new dynamic parts (such as rotors, transmissions, and gearboxes), new wiring, and an optional 'glass' cockpit. The surplus airframes have also been 'zero-timed'.
Uganda is the latest in a series of US-friendly nations to receive the Huey II, with recent sales announced for Kenya and Lebanon, among others. Countries that already operate the Huey II include Argentina, Colombia (the upgrade kit launch customer), Guatemala, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Peru, and the Philippines.

Ugandan AMISOM contingent receives Bastion APCs

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) announced on 25 September that its Ugandan contingent had received 19 new combat vehicles from the United States and released photographs showing ACMAT Bastion armoured personnel carriers (APCs) branded as Mack products.
The handover came exactly two years after the US Department of Defense announced it had awarded a USD25 million contract to Mack Defense to deliver 62 APCs for Cameroon, Ethiopia, Somalia, Tunisia, and Uganda. Mack Defense told Jane’s at the time that the vehicles would be Bastion APCs: a product developed by France’s ACMAT. Both companies are part of the Volvo Group.
During the handover ceremony in Mogadishu, Ugandan contingent commander Brigadier General Muhanga Kayanja said: “As a contingent, we have been operating at 40% capacity in terms of the necessary equipment. This donation therefore comes in handy and will greatly boost our technical and operational capability. We however continue to face a big challenge of the improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which have cost us a lot of equipment. We need an urgent solution to this challenge.”
AMISOM announced on the same day that a symposium had been held to generate recommendations for countering the increased use of IEDs by the militant group Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen.

“US looking for Kenyan, Ugandan Huey flight simulators
Written by defenceWeb, Tuesday, 20 March 2018 The United States Army is looking to acquire a flight simulator for the Kenyan military’s UH-1H Huey II helicopters, with the possibility of acquiring one for Uganda as well.
In a notice added to the Federal Business Opportunities (FBO) website on 14 March, the US Army said it is conducting market research “to identify potential sources having an interest and industry technologies available to support/provide the Huey II Flight Training Device (FTD) in support of the Republic of Kenya with a potential option for an additional Huey II FTD for the Republic of Uganda.”
The FAA Level 5 flight training device should be able to train pilots and co-pilots. An initial 16 pilots would be trained on the simulator.
Bell Helicopters delivered the last of eight Huey II helicopters to the Kenyan Air Force in July 2017, for use against al Shabaab militants in Somalia. Uganda is due to receive five Huey IIs from the US this year – the aircraft completed their refurbishment in November 2017.”

US donates vehicles, equipment to Uganda
Written by defenceWeb, Wednesday, 13 June 2018
Oshkosh FMTV trucks. The United States has donated equipment and vehicles, including three armoured trucks, to the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) to support its counter-insurgency and peacekeeping capabilities.
The equipment included 30 Mercedes Benz trucks, six boom lifts, a rough terrain container handler, three Oshkosh FMTV armoured trucks, a Caterpillar D7R2 bulldozer, ten generators and spares. They were handed over on 7 June by US Ambassador to Uganda, Deborah Malac.
The equipment was received by UPDF Chief of Defense Forces Gen David Muhoozi at the Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre (URDCC) in Jinja district. The URDCC is a unit of the East African standby forces (EASF) that deploys peace keeping troops within the region and continental Africa.
“I commend countries that have demonstrated high levels of peace-keeping, especially the UPDF who have been in Somalia where there is insurgency,” Malac said. She added that the donation is part of the African Peace Rapid Response Partnership to support African countries involved in peacekeeping efforts.
“We have done little in the past; but this better equipment will enhance our preparedness and readiness to respond to threats in security across the region. This should not been seen as self-serving but to the rest of the world,” said Muhoozi. “The US has provided $270 million under the African Peace Rapid Response Partnership,” he said, adding that Uganda has been allocated another $51 million for logistics and engineering training.
The United States has previously donated vehicles and equipment to Uganda, including six Cougar mine-resistant, ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles in 2016/17 and 15 Cougars and 10 RG33s in 2014, according to the US Excess Defense Articles database.
In September 2017 the UPDF received 19 Acmat/Mack Bastion armoured personnel carriers (APCs) from the United States for its contingent with the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom).
On the aerial side, the US donated two Cessna 208B Caravan light aircraft to the UPDF Air Wing in March 2015, and is delivering five refurbished UH-1H Huey helicopters to Uganda this year.

Uganda takes South African patrol boats into service
Written by Guy Martin, Friday, 22 June 2018
Ugandan patrol boats. The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has taken into service four 850 Military Patrol Boats (MPB) built in South Africa and supplied by Twiga Services and Logistics under a contract by Impala Services and Logistics Limited of Uganda.
The four 850 Military Patrol Boats (MBPs) were commissioned into service by President and Commander in Chief Yoweri Museveni on 19 June after a firepower demonstration near the UPDF Marine base at Port Alice Pier near Entebbe. The Marines also demonstrated combat tactics, water survival skills and scuba diving capabilities. At the same time, Museveni commissioned five cadet officers.
He said it is vital for Uganda to secure its bodies of water as 20% of the country is under fresh water. “Lakes are very easy areas of infiltration, there is need to defend our fisheries but also stop border lakes from being used by terrorists and criminals.”Museveni said search radars are needed to improve security on Uganda’s lakes.
The boats were built in Cape Town and supplied by Twiga under contract from sister company Impala Services and Logistics in Uganda. Training and technical support was part of the package, with training taking place in Cape Town and Entebbe.
Museveni said the military should consider partnering with Impala Services to be able to make the boats in Uganda instead of importing them and thanked Impala Services for supplying the boats.
Each boat is fitted with a machinegun mounted on the bow and a machinegun on each side of the rear of the vessel and is powered by two 200 horsepower Yamaha outboard engines giving a top speed of around 35 knots. The MPB marine electronics system includes radar, underwater scanners, engine management system and wifi system. The boats are 8.5 metres long and 2.3 meters wide accommodating three gunners and boarding party of four, coxswain and marine electronic system operator. alt The Twiga rugged patrol boat range, which includes the 850 Military Patrol Boat, is made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), which make them virtually indestructible water platforms, although slightly heavier than conventional boats. They are built by Rhino Marine, which has granted Twiga the sole agency for its military craft. The MPB are supplied from 6.5 to 12.0 meters and designed for riverine and close to coast operations. The HDPE provides positive bouncy and is simple to maintain should it suffer damage.
The Chief of the UPDF, General David Muhoozi, said the Marines have plans to increase their fleets with more vessels and strengthen the Marines’ capabilities.
Impala Services and Logistics has worked with the UPDF since 2011, manufacturing the Nyoka Armoured Personnel Carrier in Jinja together with the Ugandan military. The first Nyoka were commissioned at the Maga Maga defence industry facility in August 2014. Impala Services continues to manufacture in Uganda and provides fourth line re-manufacture for the UPDF in Mogadishu.
Twiga and Impala have been in business since early 2011 and supply military and security forces with armoured vehicles, night vision equipment, rugged boat systems, thermal imaging devices and a wide range of training and support programmes. Around 90% of Twiga’s business is joint venture manufacturing of armoured personnel carriers, the supply of spares, weapons mounts, night vision systems and ex-South African vehicles and equipment.
“Museveni launches Ugandan armoured vehicle factory Written by Guy Martin, Thursday, 16 August 2018 Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has officially launched an Armoured Vehicle Manufacturing and Assembly Facility in Maga Maga, near Jinja, which is currently producing the Nyoka armoured personnel carrier.
Speaking at the launch at Magamaga Army Barracks on Wednesday 8 August, Museveni said Ugandans were waking up, and encouraged further local industrial participation.
In 2012 the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) contracted Impala Services and Logistics, sister company of South Africa’s Twiga Services and Logistics, to design a Mamba class armoured vehicle for manufacture in Uganda. In 2012 the first two Nyokas were supplied for operational evaluations. In 2013 the manufacture and assembly of the Nyoka began in earnest in Uganda under a transfer of technology programme which continues today. The Armoured Vehicle Facility at Maga Maga Barracks has produced 20 Nyoka APC and another ten are currently being produced.
Brigadier General Byanyima, the Commander of the Motorised Infantry, said that there are plans to produce a further 13 Nyokas in the near future. Three of the current production lines are planned for use under a United Nations mission.
Since the project started, 42 technicians have been trained to manufacture and assemble the vehicles. Under the Transfer of Skills and Technology Programme, Ugandan technicians have been trained in armour welding, pneumatics, auto-electrical and mechanical skills needed to carry out manufacture of armoured vehicle hulls and the complete assembly of the Nyoka armoured vehicles.
The Nyoka upgrades required by the Uganda People’s Defence Force were based on their experience using the South African Mamba in battle. The upgrades include ballistic protection equal to NATO STANAG Level 1, shooting ports, a ballistically protected grill, air conditioning, three weapon positions on the roof, pneumatically operated rear doors, an anti-roll bar, improved braking system, infrared illuminator, improved lights and other mechanical improvements. Another requirement was that the Nyoka must use the same logistical footprint as the Buffel and Mamba.
Under the programme, armour plate is cut and bent in South Africa and shipped out to the client country for manufacture and assembly. Some armour steel is now sourced directly from Sweden, which is cut using a state of the art plasma cutter which was recently installed at the facility under the Transfer of Technology programme. Museveni hinted that in the future, steel may be sourced from Uganda rather than Sweden.
The Nyoka uses the Mamba driveline (engine, gearbox, axles), which is remanufactured while the rest of the vehicle is 100% new. The engines are remanufactured and certified in South Africa.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson explained that the establishment of the Armoured Vehicle Manufacturing Facility was driven by a careful application of acquisition resources to both acquire armoured vehicles while at the same time develop the indigenous capabilities to maintain, repair, manufacture and assembly armoured vehicles in Uganda.
The UPDF several years ago was estimated to have 40 Mambas, as well as 20 ex-South African Buffels in service according to the IISS’s The Military Balance.
Twiga Services and Logistics recently supplied four 850 Military Patrol Boats (MPBs) to Uganda under a contract from Impala Services and Logistics. Chief of the UPDF, General David Muhoozi, said plans are underway to establish a marine workshop and a pier. The Ugandan marines plan to increase their boat fleet. »

According to Guy Martin in Defence Web, The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has commissioned the locally manufactured Chui (Leopard) infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), which is based on Twiga’s recently launched Nyati but incorporating elements required by the Land Forces of the UPDF. The Chui was commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni, Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF, during a function at State House in Entebbe on 18 October.

According to Land Forces commander, Lieutenant General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the new vehicle is manufactured in Uganda by the Armoured Vehicle Manufacturing and Assembly Facility in Maga Maga, near Jinja, which has also manufactured the Nyoka armoured personnel carrier and Nyoka weapons platform. As reported by Guy Martin, the Chui IFV requirement came from Impala Services and Logistics Limited, a Ugandan defence company, to which Twiga Services and Logistics proposed a variant of the Nyati armoured personnel carrier (APC), which was unveiled by Twiga in August 2021.
The Chui variant - rather an armed APC than a true IFV - is being built in Uganda under a technology transfer agreement to further contribute to the growth of the country’s defence industry. Variants of the Chui include a mortar carrier, a recoilless gun platform, and an armored ambulance.
