US funds North Macedonian replacement of Soviet-era armour
Igor Bozinovski, Skopje - Jane's Defence Weekly
28 August 2019
The Army of the Republic of North Macedonia (ARNM) will retire most of its Soviet-era armoured vehicles under the US European Recapitalization Incentive Program (ERIP), the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Skopje told Jane’s on 21 August. The vehicles to be retired are BTR-70/80 wheeled armoured personnel carriers, BMP-2 tracked infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), and MT-LB tracked carriers.
The aim is to improve ARNM interoperability with NATO, and to that end the highest priority for North Macedonia is to equip and modernise its army in accordance with the Long Term Defence Capability Development Plan (LTDCP) 2019–28 adopted by the government on 23 July, the MoD said. The LTDCP 2019–28, which was approved by parliament on 26 August, foresees acquisition of 56 Infantry Carrier Vehicles and 96 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles.
The obsolete armour is to be replaced through the acquisition of US military vehicles in a process that North Macedonia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Radmila Shekerinska announced for the first time on 7 August.

by Igor Bozinovski
The Army of the Republic of North Macedonia (ARSM) received a US donation of 1,269 Colt M4 5.56×45 mm carbines during a ceremony at Gjorche Petrov military barracks in Skopje on 1 March, the Ministry of Defence reported on its website later the same day.
The ARSM received a US donation of 1,269 Colt M4 5.56×45 mm carbines on 1 March. (Macedonian MoD)
Defence Minister Radmila Shekerinska said the donation would help the ARSM convert to the NATO-standard 5.56×45 mm calibre and the M4, which is already used by special forces, to arm NATO-declared infantry units. She added that the donation is part of a bigger package scheduled for completion in 2022 that will increase the number of donated M4s to over 2,000 and also includes machine guns and grenade launchers.
US Ambassador to North Macedonia Kate Marie Byrnes said the gifted rifles are worth USD1.2 million.
The M4 donation came two days after Shekerinska and US Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Mara Karlin signed a new memorandum of understanding that replaces the one signed in 1994, enhancing the strategic partnership between the two nations through joint training and exercises, increased co-operation in the fight against terrorism, more intensive military education exchanges, and improved interoperability through modernisation and equipping the ARSM

North Macedonia donates its T-72A main battle tanks to Ukraine in exchange for Western tanks
Defense News July 2022 Global Security army industry
POSTED ON SATURDAY, 30 JULY 2022 10:32
According to information published by the Radio Television of Serbia on July 29, 2022, the Ministry of Defense of North Macedonia confirms the donation of its T-72A Main Battle Tanks to Ukraine. On July 30, 2022, a video was published on Social Network showing a convoy of main battle tanks on the way to Ukraine.

According to the military balance, North Macedonia's armed forces have a total of Soviet-made T-72A Main Battle Tanks (MBTs). Citing information from the Ministry of Defense from North Macedonia, the T-72A donated to Ukraine will be replaced by Western tanks to equip one battalion. The number of T-72A tanks donated to Ukraine was not specified.
North Macedonia formally became NATO’s 30th member on 27 March 2020. A strategic defense review was released in 2018, which set out aims to optimize, reorganize and modernize the armed forces into a small, modern, and flexible force. A 2019–2028 Defense Capability Development Plan (DCDP) consolidated long-term development goals aimed at developing collective defense, cooperative security, and crisis-management capabilities.
A Mid-term Defense Capabilities Development Plan, adopted in January 2020, is intended to help implement the DCDP. A new Defense Strategy, signed in March 2020, indicated development priorities as well as guidelines for improving defense planning. Work on MoD restructuring is underway.
The T-72A is the second generation of MBT in the T-72 family that entered production in 1970 and was accepted for service with the Russian army in June 1979.
The main armament of the T-72A consists of one 125 mm (2A46) smoothbore gun fitted with a light-alloy thermal sleeve and a bore evacuator. The gun fires three main types of separate loading ammunition, APFSDS with a maximum range of 2,100 m, HEAT-FS with a maximum direct fire range of 4,000 m, and HE-FRAG(FS) with a maximum indirect fire range of 9,400 m.
The overall layout of the T-72A is similar to all Soviet tank series with the driver's compartment at the front, the combat turret in the center, and the engine and transmission at the rear. The tank has a crew of three thanks to the use of an automatic loading system with 24 rounds of ready-to-fire ammunition. The tank carries a total of 39 rounds, 12 are APFSDS-T, 21 HE-FRAG(FS), and the remaining six HEAT-FS. The additional rounds of ammunition are stowed in racks behind the turret basket and in indentations in the rear floor fuel cell and second forward right cell near the driver.
The T-72A is powered by a V-12 piston V-46-6 multi-fuel air-cooled engine developing 780 hp. The tank can reach a maximum road speed of 60 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 480 km that can be extended to 550 km with the use of two additional fuel drums mounted at the rear of the chassis.

Macedonian Su-25s to Ukraine?
For some weeks unconfirmed reports about the delivery of the four North Macedonian Air Force Su-25 Frogfoots to Ukraine have been around.
At that time not much attention was paid to these rumours, because several other 'deliveries' of fighter aircraft from eastern-Europe countries in the end never materialised, but now our friends at The Drive state they have satellite images of Petrovec airbase that show the four Frogfoots have disappeared from the ramp in the open where they were stored for several years.
Also Macedonian newspaper MKD reported in June this year that engineers from Ukraine were inspecting the Su-25s. So at least the Su-25s were moved, and likely to Ukraine. Scramble Magazine is curious if Ukraine have or will return all four to flying condition, or just use these for spare parts for their own fleet of active and stored Su-25s.
The three single-seat Su-25 and sole two-seater Su-25UB were obtained from Belorussian stocks and arrived from Ukraine on 20 June 2001 to help fighting the Albanian insurgents. Around 2004 all four were were set aside and placed in long-term storage out in the open at Petrovec airbase. The Frogfoots were the only fighter aircraft ever flown by the North Macedonian AF, which now only operates a helicopter force with a small number of Zlin training aircraft.

North Macedonia orders Boran 105mm towed howitzers from Türkiye
POSTED ON MONDAY, 16 JANUARY 2023 16:24
According to information published by the Turkish press agency Anadolu on January 13, 2023, North Macedonia ordered 18 Boran 105mm towed howitzers from Türkiye.

North Macedonia has launched a defense plan to modernize its armed forces through American and German military assistance. The North Macedonian defense force is composed of the Army of North Macedonia and the Military Police. The Army of North Macedonia is responsible for the defense of the country, while the Military Police is responsible for maintaining order within the armed forces and providing security for military facilities
The country's defense budget for 2021 is around $12.6 billion.
Currently, the North Macedonia armed forces are equipped with Soviet-made combat equipment and armored vehicles. In recent years, North Macedonia has been looking to modernize its armored vehicle fleet and has been in talks with several countries and companies to purchase new vehicles.
In March 2021, the United States approved the delivery of 54 Stryker 8x8 armored vehicles to North Macedonia. On August 3, 2020, it was announced that North Macedonia ordered JLTVs (Joint Light Tactical Vehicles) manufactured by the American company Oshkosh Defense.
With the acquisition of the Turkish-made Boran howitzer, North Macedonia continues to modernize its armed forces with military equipment to reach the NATO standard.
The Boran 105mm howitzer is a type of artillery weapon developed and manufactured by the Turkish company, Boran Silah Sanayi. It is a towed howitzer, which means it is designed to be transported and fired from a towed position, as opposed to being mounted on a vehicle or other platform.
The Boran 105mm howitzer has a maximum range of 11.5 km (7.1 mi) and can fire a variety of different types of shells, including high-explosive, smoke, and illuminating rounds. It can be operated by a crew of six and is typically used for both direct and indirect fire support in combat operations.
It was first unveiled in 2017 at the Turkish defense exhibition IDEF. It recently entered into service with the Turkish Armed Forces, and also has been proposed for export to other countries.

North Macedonia selects Leonardo helicopters
On 22 January, North Macedonian Defence Minister Slavjanka Petrovska made an announcement on national TV, saying four Leonardo AW149 and four AW169M helicopters are to be procured for an estimated EUR330 million. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Army of the Republic of North Macedonia (Armija na Republika Severna Makedonija: ARSM) have decided to acquire Italian helicopters to replace the country's Soviet-built airframes (Mi-8MT, Mi17V-5 and Mi-25V).
In securing the North Macedonian tender, Leonardo beat off competition from Airbus with the H145M and H225M, from Bell with the 412M, and from Lockheed Martin with the S-70 Black Hawk. According to Petrovska, the selection was made on the grounds of completeness, pricing, and the logistics and maintenance systems of the aircraft.
A government-to-government (G2G) agreement between North Macedonia and Italy will now be signed, with helicopter deliveries to follow 24–36 months later.
