China to Feature New Tilt-rotor Drone at Airshow China 2018
07:24 AM, November 1, 2018
Chinese new Tilt-rotor drone: CAAA image
The Chinese Academy of Aerospace and Aerodynamics (CAAA) on Wednesday revealed the CH-10 tilt-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that will be featured at the Airshow China 2018 in Zhuhai next week.
The CH-10 is a new unmanned aerial vehicle integrating helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft technology, Global Times reported quoting a CAAA statement.
The main mission of the CH-10 is to accompany large- and medium-sized naval ships or army forces and to conduct intelligence, reconnaissance, detection, communications relay, search, target identification, and relay guidance, the statement said.
The drone can take off and land vertically and hover in the air like a helicopter, while as a fixed-wing aircraft, it cruises rapidly and travels a long distance. The shift of flight modes is done through the tilting rotor, the statement said.
It can take off and land on medium and large destroyers and frigates, it said. The development of the CH-10 will also provide invaluable experience for China to develop its manned tilt-rotor aircraft.
The surprising announcement of the CH-10 is indicative of China’s advancement in tilt-rotor technology as only the United States and a handful of its allies have brought this technology to fruition.

The People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) revealed at the Airshow China 2018 exhibition on 6-11 November in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, that it has acquired the Aviation Industry Corporation of China's (AVIC's) armed reconnaissance Wing Loong II medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (MALE UAV), which is known in PLAAF service as the Gongji-2 ('Attack 2' or GJ-2).
PLAAF officials declined to provide details about the specific configuration and capabilities of the displayed GJ-2 - which bears the serial number 53130 - or the number and distribution of the type, saying only that it offers significantly longer range, endurance, and payload capacity than the previous GJ-1. They would also not disclose if the GJ-1 will eventually be phased out in favour of the newer and more capable air vehicles.
First unveiled at Airshow China 2016, the baseline Wing Loong II is developed and manufactured by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC): an AVIC subsidiary that is also responsible for building the PLAAF's J-20 next-generation multirole fighter. The UAV was first marketed in company literature at Airshow China 2015, although it was not until the 2016 exhibition that CAC debuted a "production-ready" version of the air vehicle along with an array of compatible UAV-launched weapons.
The Wing Loong II bears a strong resemblance to General Atomics Aeronautical Systems' MQ-9 Reaper UAV as it features a low-wing monoplane slender fuselage and empennage with lifting surfaces that terminate in winglets, as well as a prominent V-tail and ventral fin. Like its US-made counterpart, each wing can incorporate up to three hardpoints for external stores.
However, the in-service GJ-2 shown at the PLAAF's static display appears to be different from the baseline air vehicle as it does not feature winglets and it was shown equipped with only two hardpoints under each wing.

CASC is about to complete trials of its new TL-4 ATGW system, company officials told at Airshow China 2018. Source: Dmitry Fediushko
The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) is testing its newest TL-4 anti-tank guided weapon (ATGW) system, a company representative told Jane’s at the 6–11 November Airshow China 2018 defence exhibition in Zhuhai.
The firm is about to complete trials using the system’s anti-tank guided missile (ATGM), said the official, adding that about 40 TL-4 missiles have already been test-fired, successfully destroying the intended targets. The missile is housed in a protective launch container that is 1.2 m long, 174 mm wide, and 178 mm high. Its weight, with the missile enclosed within, is stated to be 28.5 kg. The man-portable variant of the system comprises a tripod-mounted guidance unit and two munitions and can be transported to the battlefield by three soldiers, the representative added.
The TL-4 missile can be fitted with either a tandem shaped-charge anti-armour warhead or a high-explosive fragmentation warhead. The ATGM is controlled by an inertial measurement unit coupled with an infrared (IR) seeker. The ATGM uses a wireless datalink to transfer video data from its IR seeker to the guidance unit, and can engage a target at a distance ranging between 0.5 km and 6 km, the manufacturer said without specifying the ATGM’s armour-piercing capacity.
The guidance unit of the TL-4 weighs 30 kg and incorporates both daylight and thermal channels. The unit can detect a target at a distance of up to 6.5 km during the day and 6 km at night. “The TL-4 anti-tank system features a continuous working time of approximately one hour and is activated in about 30 seconds,” said the company official. The system’s tripod has a traverse angle between –60° and 60°, and an elevation angle between –10° and 10°.

China's first unmanned missile boat that recently tested missile launch is on display at the 12th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China) in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong province.
The unmanned boat, Liaowangzhe-2, is the country's first and second globally to fire a missile successfully. A remote-controlled unmanned ship of Israel's "Protector" series successfully fired a missile during an exercise last year.
It is for the first time that Liaowangzhe-2 is shown to the public. It is jointly developed by Zhuhai-based shipping developer Oceanalpha, Xi'an Institute of Modern Control Technology and Huazhong Institute of Electro-Optics.
The unmanned boat is 7.5 meters long and 2.7 meters wide, having a tonnage of 3.7 tons and a maximum speed of 45 knots. It can sail about 310 nautical miles at a speed of 22 knots. It can be used in sea conditions leveled below rough, or waves below 2.5 meters high.
Liaowangzhe-2 is a reconnaissance and strike integrated unmanned vehicle, and it is equipped with a quadruple missile launcher in the front to launch four missiles with a maximum range of 5 kilometers under an image-aided terminal guidance system.
It can be used for patrol missions around islands and border waters, attacking medium and small targets on the sea and land. A group of such boats could also carry out disability strike on large targets.
The boat has different operation modes, such as fully autonomous, semi-autonomous and remote-controlled.

Airshow China 2018: China unveils new ‘Heavenly Palace’ space station
By admin - novembre 8, 2018
CHINA has unveiled a replica of its first permanently crewed space station, which would replace the international community’s orbiting laboratory and symbolises the country’s major ambitions beyond Earth.
The 17-metre core module was a star attraction at the biennial Airshow China in the southern coastal city of Zhuhai, the country’s main aerospace industry exhibition.
Outside, China’s J-10 fighter jet and J-20 stealth fighter wowed spectators as they zoomed across Zhuhai’s sky. Back inside, the country displayed its fleet of drones and other military hardware.
Crowds gathered around the cylindrical space station module representing the living and working quarters of the Tiangong — or “Heavenly Palace” — which will also have two other modules for scientific experiments and will be equipped with solar panels.
Three astronauts will be permanently stationed in the 60-tonne orbiting lab, which will enable the crew to conduct biological and microgravity research.
Assembly is expected to be completed around 2022 and the station would have a lifespan of around 10 years.
The International Space Station — a collaboration between the United States, Russia, Canada, Europe and Japan — has been in operation since 1998 but is due to be retired in 2024.
China will then have the only space station in orbit, though it will be much smaller than the ISS which weighs 400 tonnes and is as large as a football pitch.

BILLIONS SPENT
The country announced in May that the lab would be open to “all countries” to conduct science experiments.
“There is no doubt that China will use its station in a similar way as the ISS partners are using their outpost: research, technology and as a stepping stone for deep-space exploration,” said Chen Lan, analyst at GoTaikonauts.com, a website specialised in the Chinese space program.
Research institutes, universities, and public and private companies have been invited to propose projects.
Some 40 plans from 27 countries and regions have been received, according to state media.
The European Space Agency has sent astronauts to China to receive training in order to be ready to work inside the Chinese space station once it is launched.
“I’m sure over time China will be successful developing partnerships,” said Bill Ostrove, space analyst with US-based Forecast International consultancy.
“Many countries, and increasingly private companies and universities, have space programs, but cannot afford to build their own space station,” he said.
“The ability to put payloads and experiments on a human spaceflight platform is extremely valuable.” Beijing is pouring billions into its military-run space program, with plans to send humans to the Moon in the near future.
Citing China as a threat, US President Donald Trump has launched plans to create a new “Space Force” to give his country dominance over rivals in space.

DIVERSE SPACE MARKET
But China’s space program has encountered some glitches.
A space lab dubbed Tiangong-1 disintegrated as it plunged back to Earth in early April, two years after it ceased functioning.
Chinese authorities denied that the lab — which was placed in orbit in September 2011 as a testing ground for the permanent station — was out of control.
A second lab, the Tiangong-2, was launched into orbit in 2016. “Despite a lot of talk of the opposite, the United States remains the most dominant power in space right now,” Ostrove said.
“The most likely scenario for the future is that China will emerge as one of the major space powers,” he said.
But Russia, the European Space Agency, Japan and India will continue to play “major roles” in space exploration, while private firms are becoming increasingly important in the sector, Ostrove added.
“The space market is becoming more diverse,” he said, “so it will be difficult for one or two countries or companies to dominate the field in the way the US and Soviet Union did during the Cold War.”

New Chinese unmanned aerial, ground, and sea vehicles (UAVs, UGVs, and USVs) took centre stage at the 6-11 November Airshow China 2018 defence exhibition in Zhuhai.
At least 100 state-owned and private companies that develop and manufacture unmanned air and land platforms - as well as associated equipment such as avionics, mission payloads, weapons, power and propulsion systems, and structural components and spare parts - showcased their latest developments at the event, with many of these companies displaying in a dedicated UAV Hall for the first time in the event's history.
Consistent with Airshow China's reputation for being an outlet to officially unveil previously secret developments to the public, state-owned defence primes such as China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) and China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) took the opportunity to take the wraps off secretive programmes that had appeared as conceptual designs or models at earlier exhibitions.
For example, CASIC highlighted its stealth unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) technology demonstrator called Tian Ying (Sky Eagle). This UCAV adopts a low-observable flying wing design comparable to that of Lockheed Martin's RQ-170 Sentinel reconnaissance UAV, which was stated to have a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 3,000 kg. The company's Third Academy, which is responsible for the air vehicle's development, had released a statement in February 2018 announcing that it had already completed a series of successful trials.
Two years after CASC displayed a model of its then unnamed stealth UCAV to a selected audience within its private chalet at the previous exhibition, a full-sized model of the company's new Cai Hong 7 (Rainbow 7 or CH-7) prototype was prominently showcased at the Zhuhai show.

The China North Industries Corporation (Norinco) displayed several new variants of its Lynx family of open-top, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) at the 6-11 November Airshow China 2018 in Zhuhai.
The original 8×8 Lynx ATV, which had entered service with the People's Liberation Army's (PLA's) mountain and airborne units by 2015, has now been complemented by a number of variants, including a self-propelled gun-mortar (SGM), two self-propelled mortars, a multiple rocket launcher (MRL), a medical evacuation vehicle, three reconnaissance vehicles, and a firefighting variant.
The 6×6 SGM variant, which is operated by a crew of three, is fitted with a 120 mm rifled gun-mortar that has firing range of up to 13.5 km, a Norinco representative told Jane' s. The vehicle seems to be based on the 2A51 ordnance used by the 2S9 Nona-S, or a later version of it, such as the 2A60 and 2A80 used respectively by the 2S23 Nona-SVK and 2S31 Vena.
The 6×6 self-propelled mortar variants are equipped with either a 120 mm or an 82 mm conventional smooth-bore mortar. Both platforms are operated by a crew of two and are fitted with a digital fire-control system (FCS).
The 6×6 MRL variant is equipped with a modified Type 63 107 mm 12-tube MRL in a 2×6 configuration. Like the previous variant, this vehicle, which can carry an additional 12 107 mm rockets, has been fitted with a digital FCS and is operated by a crew of two

Airshow China 2018: Herakles announces Velociraptor APS development
Nanjing-based private company Herakles Defense Technology announced at Airshow China 2018 in Zhuhai, held from 6 to 11 November, that it is developing a new indigenous hard-kill active protection system (APS).
The APS suite, called Velociraptor, is designed for use aboard land combat platforms such as armoured personnel carriers (APCs), infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), and main battle tanks (MBTs), as well as strategically vital assets such as ballistic missile launchers and early warning radar vehicles.
Jane's understands from Herakles Defense that the Velociraptor APS is close to final design with field trials expected to commence in 2019, although company chairman Yong Wang admitted that it would be a challenge securing the necessary permits, vehicles, and guided munitions for live testing in the Chinese mainland.
"We might have to seek assistance from potential foreign customers to perform our trials," Yong said, noting that there has been significant interest from Central Asia and the Middle East for effective but affordable vehicle countermeasure systems.
According to company specifications, the Velociraptor APS typically comprises one or more effector launchers - each carrying up to four ready-to-fire 76 mm high-explosive fragmentation interceptors - supported by four 2D Ku-band active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars operating at the 15 to 18 GHz spectrum. Each radar module features a flat-faced transmit/receive antenna panel measuring 72×36 mm that can mounted on base of the launcher or affixed to the corners the turret in the case of armoured vehicles and MBTs. A central signal processing system and power supply unit completes the protective suite.
"We have adopted a fully modular architecture which enables our customers to fit individual components where they are most effective of simply where there is appropriate space without impacting on performance," he explained.

Zhongbang Intelligent Technology (ZB Intelligence), a Qingdao-based company specialising in the development of control and navigation systems for unmanned surface vessels (USVs), announced a new amphibious combat USV development called the Marine Lizard at the Airshow China 2018 exhibition in Zhuhai, held from 6-11 November.
The Marine Lizard is primarily designed to be an autonomous and rapidly deployable mobile weapons platform that aids a defending force in repelling coastal and beach assaults, although it can also perform ship-to-shore troop transport and logistical resupply missions if required.
The prototype Marine Lizard adopts a 13.5 m trimaran hullform and is powered by a hybrid-electric propulsion system that supplies power to the four electrically powered track units installed under each corner of the hull bottom, which enable it to achieve a maximum speed of 20 km/h depending on the terrain. When transitioned to surface operations, the sea vehicle is powered by a pair of rear-mounted waterjets, which offer a stated maximum speed of 50 kt and cruising range of 648 n miles (1,042 km).
Song Ding, vice-president of international business at ZB Intelligence, told Jane's that the Marine Lizard's payload and weapons fit has yet to be finalised, but revealed that it will be capable of carrying a diverse range of electro-optical infrared (EO/IR) and radar sensors, as well as weapons such as heavy machine guns and anti-armour and very short-range air-defence (VSHORAD) missiles.
"We believe that there is significant interest in the domestic and international markets for such platforms in the future as many of our potential customers have long coasts and islands to safeguard," Song said, revealing that the company is already in discussion with several local and regional naval and maritime security forces to schedule demonstrations after its development is complete by late 2019, although he declined to disclose further details.
