- 9 avions d'entrainement Pilatus pour la Jordanie
AFP 10/08/2015

- Jordan erects barrier on border with Syria and Iraq to stop Islamic State fighters
Jordan is currently erecting a barrier and digging trenches along its northern and eastern borders in a bid to prevent the infiltration of fighters from Iraq and Syria, a top Jordanian general told the Jordanian daily Al-Ra'i tuesday August 11.
Border guard commander Saber al-Mahayra said the barriers and deep trenches being dug were especially aimed at stopping Islamic State jihadists from entering Jordanian territory. The move is part of Amman's defensive approach to the radical Islamist group, which has seized vast swathes of territory across Iraq and Syria. In January, IS captured a downed Jordanian fighter pilot and burned him to death.
Jordan's King Abdullah II has since vowed to ramp up the fight against the group, which also published a video of the killing.
"The blood of martyr Maaz al-Kassasbeh will not be in vain and the response of Jordan and its army after what happened to our dear son will be severe," the king said in a statement released by the royal court at the time.
Jordan shares a porous 350-kilometers border with Syria and a 175-kilometers border with Iraq, both situated in largely arid, desert terrain.
Jordan is not the first country to protect its borders against IS. Saudi Arabia started building in a sophisticated fence along its northern border to secure the desert kingdom in September 2014. The first phase stretchs for 900 kilometers (560 miles) on the country’s northern frontier.
The Saudi project includes five layers of fencing, reinforced by watch towers, night-vision cameras and radar. The whole project will include eight command and control center, 32 rapid response centers, three rapid intervention squads, 38 back and front gates, 78 monitoring towers, 10 monitoring and surveillance vehicles, 1,450,000 meters of fiber optics networks and 50 radars.

- Israel to supply Jordan with UAVs to combat the Islamic State
Gareth Jennings, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly 16 August 2015
Jordan has finalised a deal with Israel for the procurement of strategic and tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to help combat the Islamic State, according to a regional media source.
The deal encompasses Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Heron TP strategic and Elbit Systems Skylark tactical UAVs. While separate system numbers are not given, the report by the Israeli DEBKAfile website says that a total of 12 UAVs of both types are to be delivered.
According to the report, the systems are needed to support Jordanian special forces that are currently engaged in ground operations in Iraq, although there has been no independent corroboration of this claim. IAI had not responded to a request for comment at the time of writing, but Elbit Systems denied the report.
Having first entered service with the Israeli Air Force in 2010, the Heron TP is the service's largest and most sophisticated UAV with a wingspan of 26 m and an all-up weight of 4,650 kg. With a stated operating altitude of 45,000ft (although it is believed it can fly higher), the Heron TP is reported to have a 40-hour endurance. Although the Heron TP's range figures have not been disclosed, the platform's satellite communications (SATCOM) enable over-the-horizon operations.
In terms of its payload, the Heron TP has recently been cleared to carry the IAI (Tamam) M-19HD electro-optical sensor turret, which includes zoom and spotter high-definition (HD) day cameras; an HD infrared (IR) zoom camera; laser designator; laser rangefinder; laser pointer; near-IR laser illuminator; electron-multiplied charge-coupled device (CCD) camera; and short-wave IR camera.
At the other end of the performance spectrum, the Skylark is a man-portable hand-launched UAV that has a 5m wingspan; a 43 kg maximum launch weight; and a 10 kg maximum payload. Currently in its Skylark II configuration, the UAV typically flies between 500 and 5,000 ft (but has a ceiling of 16,000 ft); a maximum speed of 70 kt; an estimated range of 32 n miles (59 km; 36 miles); and an endurance of 6 hours.
The announcement that Jordan is to receive UAVs from Israel is the latest signal of increased defence co-operation between the two erstwhile enemies in the face of the common foe of the Islamic State. In July, it was revealed that Israel has supplied Jordan with 16 Bell AH-1E/F Cobras that it had previously retired from service, while images posted online on 13 August showed Royal Jordanian Air Force Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcons and Israeli Air Force Boeing F-15I Eagle (Ra'am) fighters parked alongside each other at Lajes Field in the Azores as they transited to the United States together for joint exercises.

- Jordan and Estonia order FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile systems
Raytheon, Lockheed Martin Javelin JV, Tucson, Arizona, was awarded a $41,566,755 foreign military sales contract for 354 Javelin Block 1 tactical rounds, 36 tripods, and one golden units for Jordan and Estonia. Work will be performed in Tucson, Arizona, with an estimated completion date of Aug. 31, 2023, the US DoD annouced on August 31, 2015.
U.S. aid for Jordan for each of the next three years has been boosted to $1 billion, from $660 million in 2014. In addition to the Javelin sale, Washington has recently agreed to sell Jordan Hellfire anti-tank missiles; 92 Cougar armored personnel carriers; 100 Paveway laser-guided bombs, and a new targeting system for its F-16 fighter jet fleet. Jordan is one of the two sites where the Pentagon is spending more than half a billion dollars to train Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State.
Ties between U.S. and Estonia are strong as well, amid tensions with Russia. Last month, approximately 200 Reservists, Air National Guard and active duty Airmen with eight A-10 Thunderbolt IIs from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, landed at Amari Air Base, Estonia, the U.S. demonstrating continued commitment to collective security through a series of actions designed to reassure NATO allies and partners of America's dedication to ensuring peace and stability in the region.
The FGM-148 Javelin is a man-portable fire-and-forget anti-tank missile system produced in U.S. by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. For now, it has been delivered to almost 18 different armed forces.

Jordan to receive ISR aircraft, likely transferred MC-12Ws
Gareth Jennings, London and Martin Streetly, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly 28 September 2015
Jordan is to receive four new intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft under a USD9.78 million contract awarded to L-3 Communications on 28 September.
The contract covers delivery of the aircraft to the Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF) and support, as well as pilot and maintainer training. Work is scheduled to be complete by 30 September 2016. L-3 Communications had not responded to a request for further information at the time of writing.
The contract notification does not reveal the type of aircraft, but Jordan has converted its two Airbus Defence and Space (DS) CN235 airlifters into special mission gunships (and is doing the same for one of its two C295s), and so has a track record of adapting its existing inventory for new purposes. However, on this occasion, the only suitable platform that the RJAF operates in large enough numbers to fulfil this requirement is the Lockheed Martin C-130H Hercules, four of which have been in service since 1978. While it is feasible that L-3 Communications could have developed a roll-on/roll-off kit for these aircraft, it is doubtful as they are likely to be too large to be practicable for the RJAF's requirements.
A more realistic alternative is that L-3 Communications is to provide the RJAF with a new platform type altogether. The contract value of USD9.78 million is too small for the procurement of new (or even used) host aircraft, suggesting that a transfer of US platforms might be the solution being offered here. It was recently disclosed that the US Air Force (USAF) had transferred all but four of its MC-12W Project Liberty aircraft across to the Air National Guard and Special Operations Command. L-3 Communications was responsible for developing the MC-12W for the USAF, and the Jordanian contract value, the rapid timelines, and the fact that the aircraft are being procured for counterterrorism efforts all point to the final four MC-12Ws being earmarked for the RJAF.

- Jordan to upgrade AT-802 light strike turboprops with ISR suite
Gareth Jennings, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly 30 September 2015
Jordan is to upgrade four IOMAX AT-802 Block 1 Border Patrol Aircraft (BPA) with a new intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) suite under a USD9.78 million contract awarded to L-3 Communications by the US Department of Defense (DoD), a spokesperson for the company confirmed to IHS Jane's on 30 September.
The contract covers delivery of the aircraft to the Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF) and support, as well as pilot and maintainer training. Work is scheduled to be complete by 30 September 2016.
IHS Jane's had suggested this contract might pertain to the transfer of MC-12W Project Liberty platforms from the US Air Force (USAF), given the relatively low contract value, the rapid timelines, the current status of the USAF's MC-12W programme, which has four aircraft unaccounted for, and the fact that L-3 Communications had developed these platforms in the first place.

- aytheon awarded Increment 3 of Jordan’s Border Security Programme
Raytheon will expand Jordan’s Border Security Project after the award of Increment 3, which will cost USD18.6 million. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is assisted by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency who is the main source of the award. The programme is designed to protect the Jordanian borders on the Syrian side
Raytheon previously announced the completion of Phase 2 and 3 (Jordan/Syria and Jordan/Iraq borders, respectively) as part of the JBSP, delivering key capabilities to help safeguard the Kingdom's borders.
"Raytheon continues to leverage local partnerships and regional knowledge to deliver a superior border security solution," said Dave Wajsgras, president of Raytheon Intelligence, Information and Services (IIS). "This latest contract award acknowledges Raytheon's growing expertise in the region."
Under the latest contract, Raytheon will install passive barrier fencing, sensors, cameras and a command and control system. The focus is to enhance the Jordanian Armed Forces' ability to deter, detect and interdict threats.
"Our goal is to deliver the best possible border security offering for the Kingdom," said Todd Probert, vice president for Mission Support and Modernization at Raytheon IIS. "The best border security solution is the right combination of equipment, training and sustainment based on customer needs."
Raytheon's border security efforts support the DTRA's Cooperative Threat Reduction Integrating Contract (CTRIC II), awarded in April 2011 as a multiple-award, indefinite delivery/ indefinite quantity contract.

- Jordan receives 3 Blackhawks from USA
Nov 20, 2015
A photo shared by the US embassy on its Facebook page shows one of the Blackhawk helicopters that Jordan received from the US last week (Photo courtesy of US embassy)
Jordan has received three Blackhawk helicopters from the US out of eight allocated for the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF), Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani said Wednesday.
In a statement to The Jordan Times, he commended the “ongoing” military cooperation between Jordan and the US, describing the delivery of the helicopters as a “reflection of the strategic interdependence between Jordan and the US.”
Momani, who is also minister of state for media affairs and communications, said that these helicopters will contribute to the Kingdom’s plans to enhance its army’s capabilities in the face of threats and in its efforts to safeguard its border.
He noted that Jordan’s military armament system has now become one of the best in the world, stressing that the Kingdom will continue to upgrade the capabilities of its armed forces.
In a post on its Facebook page on Wednesday, the US embassy said the three helicopters were delivered last week.
“The Blackhawks will provide the JAF [with] an increased capability to respond to border threats around the country and are the latest example of our partnership and unwavering security commitment to Jordan,” the embassy said.
The US has provided additional military assistance to Jordan this year, including the eight Blackhawks, firearms, ammunition for F-16 fighter jets and other equipment.

This coincides with a growing drumbeat for war in the country, where the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) has found a new territorial foothold in the oil-rich Sirte region. The United States is currently weighing up a bombing campaign to put the ‘”unity”‘ government back in power.
How did ISIL find a new home in Libya? The explanation casts doubt on any idea that simple military power will solve the problem.
