MOROCCO - The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (IKE CSG) is participating in Lightning Handshake, a bi-lateral maritime exercise between the U.S. and the Royal Moroccan Navy (RMN) and Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF) during the first week of March.

The exercise enhances interoperability between the U.S. and Moroccan Navies across multiple warfare areas, many of which include: surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, air and strike warfare, combined logistics support, maritime interdiction operations.

“On behalf of the Sailors assigned to the IKE CSG it’s an honor to participate in this historic bi-lateral maritime exercise; hallmarking 200 years of an enduring partnership with Morocco,” said Rear Adm. Scott Robertson, commander, Carrier Strike Group Two. “Exercises like Lighting Handshake enhance the foundation of our interoperability and continued support of our long term commitment to security in the region.”

Lightning Handshake 2021 increases the ability of U.S. and Moroccan maritime forces to work together in order to address security concerns and increase stability in the region.

Participating ships in Lightning Handshake from the IKE CSG, commanded by Rear Adm. Scott Robertson, include flagship USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69); and Destroyer Squadron 22 ships include Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Mitscher (DDG 57), and USS Porter (DDG 78).

Aircraft participating in Lightning Handshake include - Squadrons of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, embarked on Eisenhower include the "Fighting Swordsmen" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 32, "Gunslingers" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 105, "Wildcats" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 131, "Rampagers" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 83; "Dusty Dogs" of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 7; "Swamp Foxes" of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74; "Screwtops" of Airborne Command and Control Squadron (VAW) 123; "Zappers" of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 130, and a detachment from Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 40 "Rawhides.”

Moroccan assets participating in Lightning Handshake include: Royal Moroccan Navy Frigate Tarnk Ben Ziyad (SIGMA Class Frigate) Royal Naval HQ Maritime Operations Center (MOC) Royal Air Force HQ Air Operations Center (AOC), one Panther Helicopter, and two of each fixed-wing combat F-16 and F-5 fighter aircraft.

USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (HSTCSG) participated in the 2018 exercise and included unit events which flexed interoperability between the U.S. and Royal Moroccan Navies in the following warfare areas; communication, link, Anti-Submarine Warfare, close air support and Naval Surface Fire Support.

Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group is a multiplatform team of ships, aircraft and more than 5,000 Sailors, capable of carrying out a wide variety of missions around the globe.

U.S. Sixth Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Tribune News Service) — For helicopter pilots, approaching a Navy destroyer flight deck is like aiming for a postage stamp, says Capt. Scott Jones, commodore of the Norfolk-based destroyer squadron. It takes lots of practice for pilots and the sailors down below , he said.

And that’s what pilots from the Royal Moroccan Navy got during the strike group’s three-day joint operations exercise with one of America’s oldest allies — 244 years and counting.

“The goal is to build trust. There’s only so much you can do with phone calls or power points. You have to operate together to build trust,” said strike group commander, Rear Adm. Scott Robertson.

The exercise, called Lightning Handshake, marked the first time Robertson, Jones and the air wing commander, Capt. Marcos Jasso, operated with the Moroccan navy and air force, though the strike group included sailors from the USS Harry S. Truman strike group that conducted a similar exercise in 2018.

The ships drilled with a Moroccan frigate, maneuvering close to one another while firing live rounds, as they practiced operations against submarines and other surface ships.

Different ships — the Moroccan frigate is a Dutch design — have different capabilities, and there’s nothing like working together to get a feel for that, Jones said.

The air wing coordinated with Moroccan pilots on live fire exercises onshore, operations that included American personnel on shore working with their Moroccan counterparts as on-the-ground operation controllers.

“It’s a chance to tap regional expertise,” said Jasso.

The Moroccans shared critical knowledge about the challenges a desert environment can pose, as well as the cultural and historic sensitivities which, if ignored, can limit a naval air strike’s war-winning objectives, he said.

For the Moroccans, the exercise also offered a change to practice in-flight refueling from a fighter jet — something the Navy has done for decades but that they don’t get a chance to do that often, he said.

The Moroccan Navy helicopters aiming for that postage-stamp sized flight deck on USS Mitscher were drilling on the key step in getting badly-needed parts or supplies to a ship or equipment and key personnel — like those on-the-ground controllers — to the shore. Helicopters on destroyer, cruiser or Coast Guard cutter flight decks evacuate sick and injured sailors and operate search-and-rescue missions, too.

“What we do is inherently dangerous,” Jones, the destroyer commodore, said. “So when we get a chance to practice with our allies, it’s an opportunity to build trust and confidence in what we do.”

The full range of surface warfare, anti-submarine, on-shore strike and logistical support operations that the strike group and the Moroccans practiced are particularly important since Morocco guards approaches to the Straits of Gibraltar, a possible choke point on the sea route between the United States and the countries of the Mediterranean Sea.

“We’ve been allies for 200 years, and this is a way of saying we’ll be there for the next 200,” said Jones.

The strike group had another chance, right after the exercise with the Moroccan navy and air force ended — the Italian frigate ITS Luigi Rizzo was nearby and the strike group sailed in formation with it for a time.

“That was completely impromptu,” Robertson said. “But we’re always looking for a chance to operate with our allies.”

Est ce que c'est possible qu'il y a des exercices/activités dans ces manœuvres qu'on ne communique pas et que personne ne peut savoir ( top secret) loin même des services de média des pays participants ?

ah parce que tu crois qu'ils partagent dans les médias tout le programme de l'exercice

Apparement les espagnols n'ont toujours pas digéré la décisions US pour notre Sahara , ils lient ces exercices à la reconnaissance US, par ailleurs ils ont vraiment pas été prévenu vu qu'un média comme el pais en parle aussi

L'objectif des manœuvres était d'améliorer la coordination des armées américaine et marocaine et de renforcer les capacités de la seconde en ravitaillement en vol, attaque au sol (au champ de tir de Tan-Tan, à un peu plus de 300 kilomètres des îles Canaries), guerre anti -interdiction sous-marine et maritime.  L'ambassade des Etats-Unis à Rabat a assuré que les exercices étaient un échantillon du "partenariat fort et durable" des deux pays en matière de sécurité. Sous le mandat de Donald Trump, il y a eu un rapprochement notable entre Washington et Rabat (au point qu'il y a eu des spéculations avec un transfert vers le pays voisin des troupes américaines déployées dans la base espagnole Rota) qui a abouti à la reconnaissance de la souveraineté marocaine. au Sahara occidental le 10 décembre.  Après les exercices, le groupement tactique a traversé le détroit de Gibraltar en direction de la Méditerranée. Deux des destroyers, l'USS Labbon et l'USS Mahan, ont fait escale à la base de Rota. Le Pentagone n'a pas révélé l'itinéraire du porte-avions, mais il est supposé qu'il participera à des exercices avec l'OTAN, car il a été certifié pour le faire, et il est supposé qu'il ira dans le golfe Persique, où le précédent L'administration a maintenu un groupe de combat permanent depuis 2019 pour dissuader l'Iran."]
