Naval Group and its partners are mobilizing all their industrial know-how and resources to develop and build the new generation nuclear aircraft carrier (PA-Ng).
A sovereignty ship to be commissioned by the French Navy in 2038, which will benefit from all the experience feedback and innovation investments since the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier.
The New Generation Aircraft Carrier (PANG for short) is a French aircraft carrier project to replace the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier. Preliminary studies were launched in October 2018.
After the Charles de Gaulle was commissioned on 18 May 2001, a project to have another aircraft carrier, the PA 2, was launched in 2003 based on the British aircraft carrier, the Queen Elizabeth class. The project was suspended in 2009 and abandoned in 2012.
During a visit to the Chantiers de l'Atlantique in May 2020, the Minister of Defence confirmed that the new generation aircraft carrier (PANG) will be built in Saint-Nazaire, the shipyard being the only one (in France) able to build a ship of such a large tonnage.
The new aircraft carrier will have a displacement of 7500 tons, a length of 305 meters, and a beam of 40 meters (131 ft 3 in). She will have two elevators.
The ship will be nuclear-powered and feature the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) catapult system. She is expected to carry combat drones, developed by Airbus and MBDA as part of the Future Air Combat System, which would be a real innovation.
The PA-Ng will carry aircraft and helicopters including E-2 Hawkeye early-warning fixed-wing, 30 Dassault Rafale fighter jets, or FCAS (French: Système de combat aérien du futur; SCAF), Airbus Helicopters H160M, and NHIndustries NH90 helicopters.

The RAFAEL’s C-DOME is the naval adaptation of the renowned, combat-proven IRON DOME, which, to date, has achieved over 5000 combat interceptions. Operational with the Israeli Navy, C-DOME is designed to protect strategic naval and land assets against a wide variety of threats.
In February 2022, the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO), in the Directorate for Defense R&D of the Israel Ministry of Defense, the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems completed a successful series of live-fire tests of the ‘C-Dome’ system. The ‘C-Dome’ was operated for the first time aboard the Israeli Naval Ship (INS) Sa’ar 6 ‘Magen’ corvette against multiple advanced threats.
The ‘C-Dome’ onboard missile defense system is based on the Iron Dome defense system developed by Rafael, with the command-and-control system developed by mPrest. ‘C-Dome’ interfaces with the Saar 6’s ‘Adir’ radar, developed by IAI’s ELTA division. It joins other advanced systems that make up Israel’s multi-tier missile defense array, including the Arrow and David’s Sling systems. The development of ‘C-Dome’ was led by the IMDO in Israel’s Ministry of Defense.
The C-Dome Naval Point Defense System is designed to effectively protect combat vessels against a large set of modern threats. It handles saturation attacks by engaging multiple targets simultaneously. reaction time is very short and enables automatic and semi-automatic engagements.
C-Dome components include a multi-round launcher assembly loaded with vertically-launched canisterised interceptors. The C-Dome utilizes the ship's own surveillance radar and does not require a dedicated Fire Control Radar. Weapon System Command and Control is seamlessly integrated with the ship's combat management system, facilitating system operation. The launchers are installed under the ship deck. Interceptors are maintenance-free and are stored in a sea-proof canister. Up to 10 interceptors can be loaded into a modular Vertical Launcher Unit.

Euronaval 2022: Airbus showcases its VSR700 UAS
POSTED ON TUESDAY, 18 OCTOBER 2022 22:51
At Euronaval, started on 18 October 2022, Airbus is showing the many range of ways our teams are pioneering to help protect these critical areas including its VSR700 Unmanned Aircraft System.
70.8% of Earth is covered by water equating to a massive 361 million km2 of seas and oceans to be monitored. Gathering intelligence over maritime areas is a challenge of colossal proportions and Airbus has taken it on with the development of several dedicated systems - which includes an array of unmanned aerial systems ranging from light to long-endurance aircraft.
VSR700, the unmanned aerial system that is currently under development and has been designed to operate alongside other shipborne naval assets, will provide commanders with an improved tactical picture, greater search and rescue power, and bring to bear a highly capable autonomous platform in times of heightened threats.
Its compact size and discreet silhouette enhance stealth, and its payload accommodates a host of long-range, high-performance sensors – the optimal capability enhancement for modern navies.
With a maximum take-off weight around 700 kg (1,500 lb), it is a larger aircraft than the Austrian Camcopter S-100 which the French Navy has trialled before.
The drone is designed to eventually deploy from Mistral-class amphibious assault ship, as well as from frigates. The prototype VSR700 performed its first flight at a drone test centre near Aix-en-Provence, France, on 8 November 2019.

The CVX (formerly known as LPX-II) is a class of aircraft carriers currently under development for the Republic of Korea Navy. The class is follow-on from the previous Dokdo-class amphibious assault ships which prioritized amphibious capability while the CVX will be designed for fixed wing and rotary wing operations instead, constituting a traditional aircraft carrier.
The planned development of the class was formally announced and funded as part of the 2020~2024 Mid-Term Defense Plan, published in December 2020.
Unlike the preceding Dokdo class, the CVX will not feature a well deck for amphibious assault craft. Instead, internal space will be dedicated to aircraft storage and maintenance. The flight deck will be of an axial design rather than using a ski-jump (used by other F-35B jet aircraft operators except for the United States Navy).
The CVX will be one of the few aircraft carriers in the world to feature two islands. The UK defense corporation Babcock International has been providing support to the CVX program and is a possible explanation for the twin-island design as Babcock led the development of the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier program for the Royal Navy.
The Republic of Korea government has stated that the sensor and weapons fit for the CVX will be developed domestically and the ship will feature a multi-function radar (MFR) for ballistic missile defence (BMD). The same system will be used about the next generation destroyer for the Republic of Korea Navy (KDDX).

The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet is an all-weather, twin-engine, supersonic, carrier-capable, multirole combat aircraft, designed as both a fighter and attack aircraft (hence the F/A designation).
Designed by McDonnell Douglas (now part of Boeing) and Northrop (now part of Northrop Grumman), the F/A-18 was derived from the latter's YF-17 in the 1970s for use by the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The Hornet is also used by the air forces of several other nations, and formerly by the U.S. Navy's Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels.
The F/A-18 was designed to be a highly versatile aircraft due to its avionics, cockpit displays, and excellent aerodynamic characteristics, with the ability to carry a wide variety of weapons.
The aircraft can perform fighter escort, fleet air defense, suppression of enemy air defenses, air interdiction, close air support, and aerial reconnaissance.
Its versatility and reliability have proven it to be a valuable carrier asset, though it has been criticized[by whom?] for its lack of range and payload compared to its earlier contemporaries, such as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat in the fighter and strike fighter role, and the Grumman A-6 Intruder and LTV A-7 Corsair II in the attack role.
The Hornet first saw combat action during the 1986 United States bombing of Libya and subsequently participated in the 1991 Gulf War and 2003 Iraq War. The F/A-18 Hornet served as the baseline for the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, its larger, evolutionary redesign.

With this alliance, Exail becomes a global high-tech industrial champion specializing in cutting-edge robotics, maritime, navigation, aerospace and photonics technologies.
Combining complementary technological expertise and geographical footprint with a strong legacy of innovation, Exail provides its global base of customers with cutting-edge in-house manufactured technologies ranging from components and sensors to products and complex systems.
The new company took the opportunity of the defense exhibition Euronaval 2022 to exhibit its Drix Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV).
DriX highly hydrodynamic monohull and drop keel provide exceptional stability and balance to the platform. The USV will pierce waves and cannot capsize, even in high sea states. Keeping movements to a minimum, the USV ensures high stability. Thus widening the onboard sensors operation window.
DriX shape and stability allows for very high-speed capabilities (up to 14 knots), reducing transit downtime and providing high survey speeds with optimal data quality, harvested in a fraction of the usual times.
As far as endurance is concerned, DriX can sail for 7 days at 7 knots. At its top speed (14 knots), DriX can maintain continuous operations for 24 hours, while a speed of 4 knots will be required for a 10-day mission.
All sensors are embedded within a gondola located 2m below the surface, in a highly reduced-noise and bubble-free environment. This offers optimum conditions for high quality data acquisition.
Exceptional acquisition conditions are further induced by DriX outstanding line keeping, including in high sea states (up to sea state 5) and cross current situations. It also has been noted that the post-processing phase of a project using DriX was reduced by half thanks to the very high quality of the collected data.
DriX is made out of composite material. This means the USV is lighter than its Marine Steel or Aluminum counterparts. It also means it is not submitted to corrosion. DriX lightweight also enables the USV to be powered by smaller engines for the same level of performance.
DriX is a versatile USV able to work in both shallow and deep water, enhancing its working domains. With a draft of 2m, DriX is able to conduct missions in coastal shallow waters down to 4-meter depths with all types of shallow water MBES.
The USV can also operate in deep offshore thanks to its AUV tracking and communication capabilities allowed through iXblue’s Gaps USBL and Canopus LBL systems. Existing third-party systems can also be implemented.

RAFAEL and HENSOLDT agreed to embark on a joint endeavour to integrate and enhance RAFAEL's Sky Shield airborne electronic warfare pod as a mature off-the-shelf Escort Jammer (ESJ), with the latest airborne electronic attack national sensitive technology (KALÆTRON Attack) by HENSOLDT. This new capability supports the Luftwaffe's decision to adapt the Eurofighter Typhoon into an electronic attack platform. The new EA pod utilizes the existing interfaces of the Litening Pod, already combat-proven on the Typhoon, thus significantly simplifying the integration efforts and saving invaluable resources.
Together, RAFAEL and HENSOLDT bring the necessary experience not only as solution providers for ESJ, but also in the programme environment of the Eurofighter and related integration and certification processes.
HENSOLDT has developed the “Kalaetron Attack” Airborne Jamming System which recently confirmed its effectiveness against various enemy air defence radars. It is part of HENSOLDT's fully digital 'Kalaetron' product family, which is used in self-protection and signal intelligence systems in the German armed forces. In addition to cognitive software elements, the core comprises a fully digitised, broadband sensor and an electronically controllable, software defined jammer. Metallic 3D printing enabled a condensed design of the electronic components so that the jammer can be easily integrated into pod formats commonly used worldwide or directly into bodies of various flying platforms. The system's effectiveness and responsiveness are also based on artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, which enable the classification of unknown threats in the field and the rapid evaluation of large amounts of data. In doing so, the many years of in-depth experience in the development of jamming techniques against radars were efficiently combined with the latest techniques of applying Edge AI computing.
RAFAEL's Sky Shield Escort Jammer is a military-off-the-shelf solution already delivered to several customers worldwide, therefore allowing for easy integration onto fast jet platforms. Sky Shield leverages the vast experience of RAFAEL in the Electronic Warfare domain and its experience with German Air Force platforms. By using AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) technology, the single wideband jamming pod covers present and future high frequency range while providing a High Effective Radiation Power (ERP). Sky Shield is able to generate simultaneous jamming and deception transmissions against multiple threats, and its commonality with existing technology, coupled with its open architecture, allow HENSOLDT and RAFAEL to offer a very robust growth potential to address future challenges and provide for exclusive national building blocks. RAFAEL serves as a centre of excellence for Electronic Warfare and is the operator of Israel's national EW range, possessing significant world-leading expertise in this domain. Some of RAFAEL's combat-proven, end-to-end airborne solutions are in service in Germany, including the LITENING and RECCELITE Electro-Optic pods on the Luftwaffe's Eurofighter Typhoon. The company's cutting-edge, life-saving defence solutions are in service with numerous NATO-member nations, including the U.S and across Europe.
“Our companies are experts in airborne electronic warfare and combine latest technology with battle-proven equipment”, says Thomas Müller, CEO HENSOLDT. "Based on these skills and supported by existing government-to-government agreements, we are able to offer the Luftwaffe a sovereign solution to the timely capability transfer of the ECR Tornado and, at the same time, to expand the capabilities of the Eurofighter by an escort jamming solution proven in modern operational scenarios.”
RAFAEL's President and CEO, Mr. Yoav Har-Even: "Our new partnership with HENSOLDT is a significant milestone in expanding Rafael’s strategic investments in Germany. This collaboration is a direct result of Rafael’s strategy to apply localization and ensure local sovereignty. HENSOLDT and RAFAEL share a common vision, unique knowledge, and an organizational culture of excellence. Under the leadership of HENSOLDT, these will come together synergistically to provide the Luftwaffe with top-notch EW/EA capabilities, necessary to address current and future threats and challenges."

Euronaval 2022: MC2 Technologies displays its counter UAV systems
Euronaval 2022 News Show Daily
POSTED ON WEDNESDAY, 26 OCTOBER 2022 10:47
Since it was founded in 2004, MC2 Technologies has come a long way: a pioneer in France in drone neutralization systems, it is now an industrial and innovative SME. On the occasion of Euronaval 2022, the firm is showcasing its counter UAV systems, such as the Nerod HG and the Nerod RF but also the Matia radar.

MC2 Technologies started developing counter-UAV systems in 2014, starting with portable and fixed neutralisation systems. Since 2021, the company has also offered detection systems.
NEROD HG
This ultra-compact and lightweight solution is dedicated to close protection. Thanks to its small size and weight of only 2 kg, the NEROD HG is the most effective "small size" solution on the market for commercial drone neutralization. Easily transportable and operable, it deploys quickly with one hand, offering a perfect combination of size and performance.
NEROD RF
NEROD RF is one of MC2 Technologies' flagship products. It is labelled "Used by the French Armed Forces" (UAF), and is used by special forces and all army corps. It has been securing the 14th of July since 2019, and has protected numerous events, including the Beijing Olympic Games.
With over 400 systems sold internationally, NEROD RF represents the know-how and values of MC2 Technologies. It is entirely manufactured in France, in the company's premises in Villeneuve-d'Ascq.
MATIA
Most UAVs are made of plastic and composite materials making their detection more complex, if not impossible with conventional radars. The MATIA radar addresses this problem: it uses Terahertz frequencies and Doppler and micro-Doppler analysis to detect all types of UAVs, including the smallest, autonomous UAVs (with no RF emission) and hovering UAVs.
Powered by machine learning (ML) algorithms, MATIA adapts to different environments to provide real-time airspace information. It is based on the detection and tracking of systems close to protected areas. The latter two systems can be coupled with the MAJES neutralisation system to form a global anti-drone solution called DNA-Drone.
